SVP SAN DIEGO / 2015 IMPACT REPORT SDSVP.ORG 1

We’re facing big problems in our community, and money alone is not enough to solve them. At SVP, we unleash potential by helping individuals realize greater impact with their giving, to strengthen nonprofi ts with our collective fi nancial resources, time, and energy.

Social Venture Partners goes beyond philanthropy.Yes, we pool money and make grants, but we also build powerful relationships among people who want to give back and the nonprofi ts that make change possible. Everyone we work with wants a better world, to tackle the challenges plaguing our communities. Through SVP they make a greater impact – together.

Finally in 2016, we expanded our reach even further by piloting a program called SVP Teens aimed at developing strategic philanthropic skills with teenagers.

It is an exciting time to be an SDSVP Partner. Our goal in 2016 is to continue to increase the value we deliver to our community, and just as importantly, the value we create for our Partners. We are establishing more opportunities for our Partners to learn, volunteer, and network. Your involvement, your ideas, and your passion are what drive SDSVP. Thank you for providing these invaluable resources. I look forward to a terrifi c future.

Sincere thanks,

Don Duford

In the few years that I’ve been a Partner with SDSVP, I’ve had the opportunity to experience the power of the organization by participating in selection processes, resource teams, working groups, Investee teams, and the Board of Directors. Through these various activities, me and my fellow Partners assist dozens of non-profi t groups – some with long term engagements and some with short term consulting. The assistance we bring is fi nancial, Partner time and expertise. While the fi nancial assistance is appreciated by the Investee recipients, the organizations we touch believe that access to knowledgeable and dedicated Partners, is arguably the most valuable gift we bring to the non-profi t community.

In 2015, we expanded both our reach and impact. Not only did we add an investment cycle focused on Innovation where we give ourselves the opportunity to try new things, but our entire Investee selection process was redesigned creating deeper understanding and observation. The results of these strategic initiatives are the opportunity to learn about trends in our nonprofi t community and the ability to get up close and personal with the organizations trying to address those challenges. These process changes involved a little trial and error but thanks to great work by our staff - Lakshmi, Sierra, and Taylor- we successfully selected three new Investees and are applying the lessons learned to the 2016 investment cycles.

Congratulations Tuck and thank you for all that you do for our San Diego community!

Tuck continues to search for new ways to give back to our local community and is a role model for ideal SVP Partner engagement.

the perseverance and service that Darcy and Carrie modeled in starting this organization.

When Tuck joined SDSVP six years ago, he was phasing down from his travel-filled career and wanted to start giving back to his community. He wanted to find a connection to his hometown by doing more than just writing a check to a local nonprofit. Tuck explains, “I wanted exposure to and an education in the nonprofit world. I also wanted to meet members of the community who were like minded.” With this goal in mind, Tuck not only volunteered to be the Lead Partner of former Investee, REBOOT, but was also the Chair of our Board of Directors for two years and has served as an invaluable member of our Engagement Committee and Development Committee.

It is not always easy to find your fit in the nonprofit world but as Tuck describes,

“The more you do, the more you get back and I have been fortunate to have time to really get involved. No matter how much or little time a person has, getting involved in our organization will be worth

Every year, San Diego Social Venture Partners awards one Partner with the Bingham Stone Award. The award is named in recognition of the founders of SDSVP- Darcy Bingham and Carrie Stone - and acknowledges an individual Partner who has been willing to go above and beyond, with outstanding leadership skills, commitment, and attitude.

In 2015, SDSVP was proud to announce Tuck Forsyth as the recipient of this award. Tuck Forsyth's dedication, advocacy for SVP, and willingness to step up wherever needed, embodies

the Board of Directors, and has just signed on to be the leader of our Human Resources Practice Group! Julie is the epitome of a dedicated San Diegan who not only used her professional expertise to advance the capacity of our Investees, but is also eager to learn about all areas of strategic giving.

Because Julie has over 35 years of experience in human resources, strategic planning, and university-level teaching, she was able to utilize her skills by helping multiple Investees with related capacity building projects and learning opportunities. For example, Julie helped Words Alive write employee and volunteer handbooks, documenting important policies and procedures and ensuring they were up to legal code. Additionally, Julie held resume-building seminars for the veterans of Workshops for Warriors, where she taught participants how to combine and explain their military experience and newly acquired certifications to prospective employers.

Julie concludes, “Two years in, I stay for the continued learning and the incredible organizations that I get to

Julie DeMeules joined SVP in March 2014 looking for ways to give back to the community and utilize her extensive human resources expertise. Julie explains that SVP was the perfect avenue because, “You can learn about many issues and causes, be assured your dues are going to well screened organizations that will utilize the money effectively, and most of all, find ways that you can help that you didn’t even know were possible.”

Right out of the gates, Julie has been a superstar. She is a member of multiple Investee teams, an active representative on the Impact Committee, serves on

I have learned so much about the non-profit sector and what makes them successful, how to evaluate non-profits and their needs, and have gained real insight into the issues facing our community. I have been able to share my HR expertise with many organizations, but I have to say I have gained so much myself.”

Julie is a treasure to have in our organization. She is always willing to volunteer for various and diverse projects. Julie brings 30 years of valuable HR experience and a ‘can do’ attitude.

The problems we face are daunting. It has never been more important to give in ways that make the greatest impact. Through SVP, Partners pool and leverage their dollars, contributing more than they could alone. But that’s just the beginning. In a biennial survey conducted by the SVP Network Office, we track changes in our Partners’ financial giving and civic engagement. See the results below.

an average salary of $60,000. Since 2011, 100% of the 238 graduates received job offers post-program completion. SDSVP has been a small part of this success. Hernan Luis y Prado, Founder and President says, “The highest value-added from our work with SDSVP has been the expertise and insights provided by the SDSVP Partners.”

I've been able to apply a set of tools learned over a couple decades in the business world and that feels good. At the same time, I'm being taught new skills and I'm learning the

nuances of the non-profit world from SVP partners, staff, and The Rosie Network team. This has been a fun and engaging ride."

Ned DeWitt, The Rosie Network Lead Partner

Meet Our Investees One of the most meaningful programs at SVP is the way that we invest. First, we take the time

to learn about a challenge facing our community to find the important leverage points for social

impact. We then look to our nonprofit community to find organizations doing great work in this area.

After vetting many high quality organizations through a process that is at the same time educational

and a lot of fun for our Partners, we select organizations to fund - called Investees. These are best

in class organizations that could become even more impactful by strengthening the business side

of their work, making them more efficient, effective, or sustainable. They become part of our family.

At SDSVP, we give more than money. We stand behind our dollars with an additional investment of

Partner time and talent. The experience of working side by side with our Investees to strengthen

their organizations is an incredible learning opportunity for the Investees and our Partners. We

make each other, and the San Diego community, better.

Working with DEEP provides an exciting opportunity to examine strategies and scalability for a collaborative effort. Plus, their approach to bridging education inequity

from all angles is sure to make a lasting difference in the lives of some of our county's most vulnerable kids!

from cradle to career. Its initial focus is ensuring children read proficiently by the end of third grade, which includes kindergarten preparedness. In pursuit of this goal, DEEP's partner organizations collaborate to strengthen the capacity of principals, K-3 teachers, parents, and other caregivers of early children. DEEP also offers summer learning programs and book clubs to children to reduce learning loss during school breaks. As

Diamond Educational Excellence Partnership (DEEP) is SDSVP’s newest Investee. It is a uniquely structured collaborative of community leaders and organizations dedicated to improving the educational outcomes for children living in the Diamond Neighborhoods in southeastern San Diego. DEEP makes sure that children transition smoothly through all critical junctures in the education pipeline

a collaborative, DEEP’s real value is realized by working with its many partner organizations. Planning is currently underway, but Executive Director, Gina Gianzero says, “I look forward to collaborating with SVP because it offers the opportunity to tap the goodwill and professional expertise of a group of talented leaders in the San Diego community.”

The Rosie Network connects military family-owned businesses with customers looking for quality goods and services, while also giving back to veterans. The founder, Stephanie Brown, discovered this need when she was searching the Internet endlessly for a contractor. Because of her status as former military

“brat” and current military spouse, she wanted to hire military. The stress and time consumption it took to find a worker led her to create the Rosie’s List, an online search tool featuring

verified veteran and military spouse-owned small businesses. More than just a listing, The Rosie Network also provides military entrepreneurs with the tools and resources they need to launch and grow their businesses, from online training, mentorship and most recently, San Diego’s first Military Entrepreneur Development Center. Moreover, the Rosie Network seeks to change the way Americans shop through its ‘Buy Military Family-Owned’ cause marketing campaign.

Of SVP, Stephanie Brown, their founder says “this process has allowed us to gain clarity of mission, develop an actionable strategic vision and so much more. The Rosie Network is light years ahead of where we were just six months ago due to the sweat equity and commitment of the SVP team. We’re so happy that The Rosie Network has achieved even greater clarity about their work and strategic vision for the future- which is bright indeed.”

The reward of this project has been the opportunity to get to know and work with a great group of people — both SVP and Words Alive — all of whom want to do the right thing

for the right reason: to help someone else.

Mark Dillon, Words Alive Lead Partner

Words Alive

Their goal is to change the lives of children and families in our community by fostering a love of reading. They run a wide variety of programs in schools, in juvenile community schools, with parents and in partnership with other nonprofi ts- ultimately reaching 5,000 San Diegans each month.

Executive Director, Patrick Stewart says, “Our partnership with SVP has not only strengthened a variety of infrastructural and organizational elements, it has

Literacy is a fundamental skill needed for life success, yet 450,000 San Diego County residents lack basic reading profi ciency- that’s 1 in 5 adults! It has also been shown that children and youth who struggle with reading are at signifi cantly higher risk for low-literacy later in life, which is strongly associated with poor life outcomes such as poverty, reliance on public assistance, underemployment, and incarceration.

Words Alive is a big part of the solution.

allowed us to view, with a greater sense of maturity and operational understanding, pathways to scale programs and increase sustainability.”

The positive feeling is mutual! SVP has loved supporting Words Alive by setting up eff ective technology platforms, helping with their communications and messaging, and improving HR systems that ensure Words Alive is an effi cient and impactful organization.

I think that Just in Time is my ‘can’t not do’. How can’t I not help these kids, how can’t I not help Sal (a JIT participant) pursue an amazing life. There is no reason that he is in a position that he is

in other than circumstances and that is true for all these kids. We are not helping the most deserving kids in our community, and when you look at what happens when you don’t support them- it’s just heart breaking.

Marty Goodman, Just in Time for Foster Youth Lead Partner

Just in Time for Foster Youth

most important gap of all: connections to caring adults, who then become a lifelong support system and the consistent community for the youth we serve.

SVP Partners have helped JIT in a variety of ways including the development of a planned giving program and the start of an endowment. Several SVP Partners have also volunteered directly with the JIT youth, contributing their time and talent to some of the most deserving members

With nearly half of former foster youth becoming homeless within 18 months of transitioning out of the foster care system, Just In Time recognized the need for consistent, long-term help from the heart so that young adults exiting the foster care system can thrive. JIT organizes a caring community for foster youth transitioning out of the foster care system ensuring that youth reach self-suffi cient adulthood. JIT also fi lls the

of our community. Of SVP’s Lead Partner, Executive Director Don Wells, says, “[Marty] has pushed us forward. Sometimes in ways that we wanted to be pushed and sometimes in ways that we weren’t ready but always we know that Marty has our best interests at heart. And what he is doing is from a place of true belief that we can do things better. If we only stretch and look for those big possibilities, we are going to achieve so much more.”

I’ve experienced tremendous growth- working with Healy as a coach, sounding board and advisor has been incredible.

school fi eld trips, parents learning healthy and culturally appropriate recipes, and children eating healthy food!

Creating an atmosphere of curiosity, Olivewood encourages inquiry through hands-on workshops for both children and adults. With over 46,000 visits to the garden since 2010, Olivewood Gardens is reaching a lot of people!

SVP has been a small piece of ensuring

Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center is an incredible 6.5 acre garden and nutrition education center in National City which serves as an indoor-outdoor classroom for both children and adults. They build healthy families and a healthy environment through hands-on gardening and cooking, and environmental science lessons for families from underserved communities. On any given day at Olivewood Gardens, you can see children learning about the ecosystem on their

their success. Executive Director, Healy Vigderson says, ““We are grateful for the support and guidance that SDSVP has provided to Olivewood over the past 3 years. I feel like I have had a team of coaches behind me, cheering me on.” Our Partners have been champions and mentors to their staff . We’ve also provided guidance during complicated audits, supported development of the Board and helped to develop fundraising plans.

This has both opened my heart and changed my perspective on local government priorities. It has truly been a privilege to witness Mid-City CAN’s

growing eff ectiveness in empowering the residents of City Heights to identify their needs, then advocate eff ectively for positive change.

Robin Pruitt, Mid-City CAN Lead Partner

Mid-City CAN

Robin Pruitt, SVP Lead Partner reminds us, "What if you had to use scarce dollars to buy bus passes so your kids can get to school because there are no school buses that serve the local schools? Or imagine being afraid to sign up for a much-needed government assistance program because of the fear that doing so would draw attention to an undocumented household member.”

Mid-City Community Advocacy Network (Mid-City CAN) identifi es the most pressing issues in the community

through collaboration, advocacy, and organizing. Then, Momentum Teams comprised of residents from City Heights, tackle these pressing issues. One amazing example is the youth opportunity pass, San Diego’s fi rst no-cost youth bus pass program, which allows low-income young people to safely get to and from work and school. Other major successes were the securing of $2 million in funding to build skate facilities and expanding opportunities for Muslim girls to partake in the same opportunities as their peers.

While it’s the residents of City Heights that are making big changes for themselves, SVP has played a role. As just a small example, in 2015, SVP Partners helped Mid-City CAN improve its HR practices and procedures, ensuring high quality evaluation and performance appraisal. Critical competencies for a growing organization!

about the challenges of this issue from expert speakers, and evaluate applications from nonprofits working to affect change in the area. This year, the program culminated in three service projects with deserving nonprofits and two, $5,000 investments in nonprofit organizations chosen by the participants.

The SVP Teens program offers a unique experience, distinguishable from typical teen service projects, as well as meaningful connections with their peers and community. Post-program interviews with the participants highlighted the powerful role that philanthropy can play in inspiring and empowering teens to make a difference and reflected values of giving, empathy, service, teamwork, and community.

We’d like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the William Gumpert Foundation and the Bornemann Family for enabling the pilot of this fantastic program, and of course, the amazing teen participants!

What values does your family hold about giving? For many teens, giving is all about getting: they anxiously wait for birthdays and holidays so they can enjoy the bounty of gifts. But what if they could get an education in the rewards of professional philanthropy and the challenges? It just might turn around their perceptions about giving, help them to appreciate what they have, and propel them toward a future devoted to helping others.

Our new SVP Teens - Youth Philanthropy Program is designed to help thoughtful teens realize the rewards of giving and serving others by providing them with meaningful service learning and leadership opportunities that connect them to core values and show them they can make an impactful difference in their communities.

Launched in 2016, SVP Teens is a three-month opportunity for 8th through 12th graders to learn about charitable giving, social change, nonprofit financial literacy, and servant leadership. The participants choose a social issue of interest, learn
