NEW! 50 Ways to Love Your LiverListen to Barb Bancroft's fascinating lecture on the liver in all of its glory. Bancroft is one of KCC’s most popular presenters, and she will take you for a journey through an amazing organ that we often take for granted. Just for starters: the liver is the second largest organ in the body, has more than 500 functions, and has the capacity to regenerate. It metabolizes drugs, alcohol, ammonia, bilirubin and hormones. It also synthesizes proteins, clotting factors, and cholesterol. The liver stores blood, vitamins, and iron. Bancroft will teach you how to interpret liver function tests (Aspartate aminotransferase [AST] and Alanine aminotransferase [ALT]), Albumin, direct and indirect bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, and clotting tests related to liver dysfunction. Bancroft also will discuss the common diseases of the liver, all of the hepatitis viruses (A thru G), cirrhosis (causes, clinical manifestations and treatment), and the effects of drugs on the liver--especially alcohol and acetaminophen. You will gain a new respect for this 4 pound football-sized organ, and an understanding that it is just as important as more “celebrated” organ systems such as the heart, lungs, brain and kidney.

Class notes: 6 contact hours will be awarded to nurses, social workers, counselors, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapists.
