Welcome to the 2015 OKC Train Show! We’re glad that you’re with us for our 39th year.
The show, voted by Cowcatcher Magazine readers as the Best Train Show for six straight years in the Southwest and Midwest, has been a gathering spot for model railroaders, rail enthusiasts and families for nearly four decades. The Oklahoma Railway Museum (ORM), Central Oklahoma Model Railroad Club (COMRAIL), Oklahoma “N” Rail, and the South Canadian Model Railroad Club, each of which are not-for-profit groups, are sponsors.
Inside Cox Pavilion, you’ll experience a number of areas that feature a variety of operating model railroads, displays, exhibits and vendors, including some of the leading manufacturers in model railroading. Be sure to use the map in the center of this booklet to find your way around.
In the northeast corner, we have a very special area for our youngest guests – the Thomas the Tank Engine Play Area hosted by ORM. Children can “play with Thomas” on the wooden train boards. Right next door is “The Great Train Set Give Away,” where we will give away over 50 model train sets to lucky children in attendance. Be sure to go by and view them all, then enter your child’s name in the drawing. The “Give Away” guidelines may be found on the entrance doors.
In the center area of our show, one will find a good number of operating model railroad layouts as well as many model railroad
manufacturers. We invite you to stop and chat with manufacturer representatives about their product line and plans for the future. The OKC Train Show is one of the few shows around the country that host several model makers and distributors, so don’t miss this opportunity to ask the experts questions.
Also, feel free to ask layout operators questions about how they’ve assembled these amazing model railroad empires. They have a wealth of knowledge to share. For your convenience, State Fair Concessions are located in the
southeast corner of the building. Rest rooms are located at each end of the building near the exits.
Please remember to wear your admission button at all times. Your button is your ticket, and allows you to come and go, plus enables admittance to the show on Sunday. That’s right … the button is good for admission for both days!
Once again, welcome to the 2015 OKC Train Show, and thanks from all us who make this show possible. Enjoy!

This article was originally published in the March/April 2014 issue of Cowcatcher Magazine
To build realistic trees, Fort Worth, TX-area NMRA member Mike Mackey recommends getting workable armatures, plus a stock of poly fiber, hairspray, ground foam, Burnt Grass Fine Turf and Green Grass Turf, a pair of clothespins or small clamp to hold the armature during construction, tweezers, a small hand drill and bit and white glue. He recommends using branches from boxwood hedges or crape myrtles.
Mackey says the cheaper the hairspray, the better for use as an adhesive. Commercially available spray adhesives also work.
Here are Mackey’s tree construction steps:
1. Prepare the armature. Stick a straight pin into the base of the tree to add stability when planted. Clip the pen head off after inserting the pin.
2. Pull a very small amount of poly fiber from
the bag. About a ½” x ½” x ¼” section will do. The sections do not and should not be exactly the same size. Just keep them fairly small.
3. Pull the piece apart so it is the density of a three-dimensional spider web. Be sure to pull the fiber out in all three dimensions rather than making “sheets.”
4. Starting at the bottom of the armature, place the fiber on a single branch. Try not to span multiple branches – each branch should get its own fiber.
5. Continue the process, working your way from the inside and bottom of the armature to the outside and top. Continue until all desired branches have been covered with fiber. Leave some branches uncovered to represent a dead branch here and there.
Be sure that the fiber is not too dense. It’s tempting to have a very full looking tree at this point, but after the flock is applied it will be far too thick.
6. Over a bag or container, spray the fiber with hairspray until the spray beads up. Be careful not to blow the fiber from the branches – try to spray in bursts instead of
one constant stream.7. Carefully and slowly sprinkle on the
flock. Darker flock can be applied to the bottom side of the fiber, with lighter fiber at the top of the tree for a bit of a highlight. It’s important not to overdue the flock. You should still be able to see through the tree after the flock has been applied.
8. Set the tree aside to dry.9. Tap off the extra flock into a container.10. Give the tree another light coat of
hairspray to help keep the flock in place.
Mackey recommends sprinkling and spraying three or four trees at a time to speed up the tree-making.

Creating a scene similar to this one de-picted on the N-scale Whitehurst & Pine Ridge Railroad of Keller, TX, is possible with many of the modeling products that are available from dealers and manufac-turers at this year’s OKC Train Show.
1. Paints for making backdrops2. Ready-made trees or tree materials3. Ready-to-run cars and locomotives4. Weathering materials5. Track, ballast and ground foams6. Plaster and rock molds7. Lichen and other materials for bushes
Everything you need to model is here at the show!Tucked on the shelfs in the vendor booths
that line the aisles at this year’s Oklahoma City Train Show is a world waiting to be built.
Cars and locomotives, scenery materials, track and electronics that offer realism are available to bring any model railroad or di-orama to life.
Best of all, with improved ready-to-run products, bare pieces of plywood can be transformed into breathtaking scenes with just a little time and effort.
In the pages of this program, you’ll find manufacturers and dealers who have the nec-essary product for purchase to help you cre-
ate a model railroad empire of any level of detail.
The N-scale Whitehurst & Pine Ridge Railroad, below left, is the Cowcatcher Mag-azine’s official model railroad. The freelanced pike, which is nearly as old as the Oklahoma City Train Show, is proof that model railroads can be constructed with a combination of ready-to-run products and hand-crafted kits.
Much of the layout was built with commercially produced scenery products, structures, paints and weathering supplies, ready-to-run cars and locomotives and pre-assembled track and turnouts.
With today’s highly detailed rolling stock and scenery products, building a realistic model is quick and easy.
All it takes is a little time and imagination.
