    KYLE HAINES, MANAGER

Kyle Haines will begin his first season as manager of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in 2015. Haines was an infielder for Salem-Keizer for 32 games in 2004 and is the first former Volcanoes player to manage the club. Haines managed the Frontier Greys of the independent Frontier League last season, his first as a manager in professional baseball. He guided the Greys to a 29-66 record, which was impressive considering the Greys didnt have a home ballpark all of their games were played on the road.I approach playing and coaching baseball as if it was a marathon, said Haines. But, the catch is that each day is a sprint. I dont believe in coasting because tomorrow is not guaranteed in this business.Haines, 32, was selected by the Giants in the 31st round of the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft from Eastern Illinois University. He spent part of his rookie season with the Volcanoes and went on to play 10 years professionally. Haines also played in the Cleveland Indians organization and for a handful of independent league clubs. During his Giants minor league career, Haines played alongside the likes of Tim Lincecum, Sergio Romo, Pablo Sandoval, Jonathan Sanchez and Travis Ishikawa. The infielder was a member of four championship teams in the minor leagues (2004 Arizona Rookie League Giants, 2005 San Jose Giants, 2007 San Jose Giants, 2009 Akron Aeros). Haines notched the go-ahead RBI single in game five of the 2007 California League Champship series for San Jose. In 2008, Haines enjoyed his best statistic season and made the All-Star Game in the Double-A Eastern League as a short stop of the Connecticut Defenders. Haines joins his older brother, Andy Haines, as a manager in affiliated baseball. The older Haines served as manager of the New Orleans Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, in 2014. Kyle is the youngest of three siblings of Joe and Rita Haines from Effingham, Illinois.

    RICKY WARD, COACH

Ricky Ward is in his 10th year coaching for the Giants system and his ninth year as hitting coach with Salem-Keizer. Ward has guided some of the leagues most successful offensive groups in recent memory, including Northwest League Championship teams in 2006, 2007 and 2009. The 2007 squad finished with a franchise-best .289 average and 497 runs scored (6.5 per game), leading to a league-best 57-19 record and a second-straight Northwest League title. Ward returned to the organization after having played in the Giants farm system from 1990-93. Ward was on the Western Oregon University coaching staff from 2003-05, after beginning his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at the University of Portland in 2002.Ward was a former infielder drafted in the 10th round by the Giants in 1989 out of Chemeketa Community College in Salem.

    MATT YOURKIN, COACH

Matt Yourkin embarks on his third campaign as a pitching coach with Salem-Keizer. Yourkin joined the Volcanoes after serving as a left-handed batting practice pitcher for the major league squad during the first half of the 2013 season. The former minor league pitcher played nine seasons with the Florida Marlins and Giants. He was selected by San Francisco from Florida in the Rule V Draft in 2008. Yourkin climbed to the ranks of Triple-A with the Marlins and Giants, including two consecutive years in the rotation with the Fresno Grizzlies. In total, Yourkin appeared in 326 games amassing 706 innings.Yourkin graduated from Napa High School in California where he lettered three years in baseball and two years in football. He attended St. Marys (CA) College and was later signed by the Marlins as a non-drafted free agent. Yourkin and his family currently reside in Gilbert, Arizona.

    VOLCANOESS A L E M K E I Z E RNORTHWEST LEAGUE OF PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL

The Vancouver Canadians three-year reign of league dominance came to a close last season as the Hillsboro Hops won their first Northwest League title.

The Canadians looked poised to win their fourth consecutive title, cruising into the Northwest League Championship Series in what had become a regular occurrence. But no team had won four consecutive Northwest League titles in nearly 25 years, and the Hops made sure it remained that way.

Hillsboro, in only its second year of existence, had the leagues best record at 48-28 and won the South Division for the first time in club history. They went on to sweep Vancouver in the cham-pionship and claimed their first league title. The Hops played their best when the pressure was on, going 18-10 in one-run games over the course of the season, the best mark in the league.

Both divisional races were tight in the first half with Spokane and Vancouver finishing with a record of 25-13 in the North Division. Add to that,j the South was also deadlocked between Hills-boro and Boise. The Hops and Indians were crowned champions because of superior head-to-head record.

While the NWL looks back on 60 years of history, professional baseballs roots in the region go back more than a century. Four different circuits operated across the Northwest between 1901 and 1922, starting with the original Pacific Northwest League. The Pacific Coast league entries in Portland and Seattle provided the regions only professional baseball between 1923 and 1936.

The Western International League (WIL) began play in 1937 with franchises in six cities. Three years later, in 1940, Salem acquired the floundering Bellingham club from the league and fielded the citys first professional baseball team, the Senators. The league ceased operations for three years, 1943-1945, during World War II, but began again with eight teams, including Salem, in 1946.

By 1954, the WIL had grown to 10 teams including four in Canada. However, by this time the league was struggling with increasing costs and declining attendance, due largely to the impact of television. Victoria, Calgary and Spokane did not finish the season and Vancouver and Edmonton announced they would not return the following year. These dramatic changes brought about the formation of the Northwest League in 1955. For 11 years, the league played a full, split-season schedule. Then, after the 1965 campaign, team owners converted to a short season format with the season beginning in mid-June rather than in April.

The Nebraska State League had been the first to adopt a short season schedule when it began play in 1956, reflecting the growing number of players who were coming out of Americas colleges and junior colleges. In 1963, Organized Baseball reclassified its entire structure, ending the era of Class B, C and D leagues. The Northern League followed in 1966, beginning with four teams that drew a total of 89,870 fans. Over the past 40 years, the league has experienced remarkable growth and improved stability.

Today, the short season format is a fixture in the Northwest and the league enjoys great popularity. Many of baseballs finest players began their pro careers in the NWL, including Tim Lincecum, Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval, Felix Hernandez, Andre Ethier, Shane Victorino, Dan Uggla, Ian Kinsler, and Zach Greinke.

    SOUTH DIVISION NORTH DIVISION

  • 2015 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Media Guide 15

VOLCANOESS A L E M K E I Z E RAfter winning the Northwest League South division both halves of the season and finishing with the best overall record in 2013, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes sought to repeat the trick in its 2014 campaign. Al-though the Craters showed promise throughout the year, an up-and-down summer eventually landed Gary Davenports club at a pedestrian 38-38 mark.

While there was no champagne popping during what turned out to be Davenports final run with the Volca-noes, the twists and turns over the course of the season were as entertaining as one will find in the Northwest-ern echelons of Minor League Baseball.

The tone of the season was set during the first week of play. After dropping the first three games to the three-time defending champion Vancouver Canadians, the Volcanoes salvaged the series with back-to-back tight wins, followed by a third successive victory on the road to rival Hillsboro. The Hops, eventual 2014 NWL champions, coupled a pair of wins themselves to take the series, putting Salem-Keizer in a rough position to begin the year.

An injection was needed to the squad, and along came 2013 Giants first-round pick (25th overall) Christian Arroyo. The 18-year-old shortstop debuted the 2014 campaign with the Augusta Greenjackets (Low-A), but a hand injury sidelined his season briefly until the start of June. This opened an opportunity to join the Vol-canoes to start the Northwest League season, and the Tampa, Florida, native flourished in a Volcanoes uni-form. Arroyo sizzled in tune with the summer months, posting a .333/.378/.469 line with a team-high 44 RBI by seasons end. The team followed suit, albeit only for a while, winning five of seven games in late June, before dropping its final three contests of the month.

Entering July needing to string some wins together for a first-half division push, the Volcanoes could not find a consistent winning recipe. A day after a near-record 5,613 fans witnessed Salem-Keizers 5-1 Patriotic Trib-ute victory over Hillsboro on July 4th, the club went an incredible 11 games trading wins and losses, the longest such stretch without consecutive wins or losses in team history. By the time July 17th produced an end to this seesaw run with successive victories at the home of the Eugene Emeralds, an even 17-17 record couldnt com-pete for a first-half South Division crown. Entering the

halfway point of the season with a 18-20 record, Salem-Keizer could rue inconsistency for its shortcomings.

Inconsistency was short-lived in the Volcanoes 2014 second half, as the team finally found its groove, largely stemming from the starting rotation. Finishing with three of the top five players in NWL innings pitched, an arsenal led by Jason Forjet gave Salem-Keizers sea-son promise. Concluding his season 7-1 with a 3.10 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 5.44 K/BB, and an astounding 87 strikeouts in as many innings pitched, the 2012 31st-round pick out of Florida Gulf Coast constantly gave his squad opportunities to win ball games. Jose Reyes, a 2014 Northwest League All-Star, was another horse Davenport could rely on all season, hurling 80-plus in-nings as well with a 3.89 ERA and a cool 1.13 WHIP. Nick Gonzalez (2 HR allowed in 71 IP), Ethan Miller (5-3), and Drew Leenhouts (8.83 K/9) rounded out the durable starting rotation.

While Salem-Keizers arms gave the club a chance on a daily basis, Arroyos teammates played their parts as well. The San Francisco Giants selected Skyler Ewing out of Rice University in the 6th round of the 2015 draft, and he found an immediate home with the Volcanoes. The big slugger mashed eight home runs throughout the campaign, collecting 31 RBI and post-ing an impressive .889 OPS. Ewing hammered in four RBI during his first game with the team, and kept it go-ing all year, especially in an August series against Boise where he clubbed two long bombs in the three-game set. Ewing also notched a NWL Player of the Week award (July 20-27) when he hit .375, including two triples.

One of the surprise packages in Davenports everyday lineup was the versatile infielder Travious T Relaford. Drafted in the 41st round in 2011, the Hinds Com-munity College product excelled in a Volcano uniform. While making only seven errors in 70 games across three positions in the infield, Relaford got on base at a .380 clip to help bolster Salem-Keizers offense.

With the first half behind them, the Volcanoes surged out of the gate into the later summer months. Begin-ning with a five-game set at home against Spokane, the Craters reeled off four straight victories, and eventually found themselves with an 8-5 second-half record head-ing into the All-Star break.

    The 2014 Season: A Roller-Coaster Summer

  • 16 2015 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Media Guide

VOLCANOESS A L E M K E I Z E RWhile the midsummer battle between the North and South Division stars was a less-than-entertaining 0-0 stalemate, the Volcanoes were well represented. Along with Arroyo, Reyes, and Relaford, third baseman WIll Callaway (.293 avg., 23 RBI), and relief pitchers EJ Encinosa (2.39 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) and Eury Sanchez (14 saves, 13.36 K/9) were granted All-Star bids.

The Volcanoes continued their winning ways into August with another impressive four-game winning streak, during which Salem-Keizer produced its season-high largest margin of victory in a 16-3 demolishing of the Boise Hawks. After a 2-1 victory over the Eugene Emeralds on August 13th, the Volcanoes had reached, and unfortunately peaked to, a 14-6 second-half re-cord, and a 32-26 overall mark on the year.

Four consecutive defeats succeeded this high point, and although the Volcanoes recovered slightly with a three-game winning streak, Salem-Keizer managed to record victories in just three of its final 11 contests, settling for a 20-18 second-half, which turned out to be six games worse than the South Division champion Hops.

Overall, the Volcanoes 38-38 record reflected their statistical performances in 2014, finishing fourth out of eight in both team batting average (.258) and team ERA (4.24). A season that offered much promise, in-cluding at one point having both the first and second-round picks from the Giants 2013 and 2014 drafts on the squad at the same time, fizzled out in the dying days of summer.

VOLCANOESS A L E M K E I Z E RThe 2013 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes began the season with a roster of veterans who collectively set a goal in April in Scottsdale, Arizona, to get back to the postsea-son in September in the Northwest.

Second-year Volcanoes like Chris Johnson, Jeremy Sy and Sam Eberle were all poised to have breakout years and make a splash in the postseason.

While the ultimate goal was not realized as the Vol-canoes fell in the Northwest League South Divisional playoffs to the Boise Hawks, Salem-Keizer ended the regular season as the best overall unit. The formula: experience.

It all started Opening Night when Johnson willed the Volcanoes to victory with an impressive performance on the mound, going six shutout innings, allowing just three base runners. The Volcanoes defeated Hillsboro 3-2 in the Hops inaugural franchise game.

Johnson went on to have one of the best seasons on the mound for any Volcanoes player ever. The righty from Edmonds, Washington, finished the year 6-3 with a 2.49 ERA. The eye-popping numbers are these: John-son tossed 78 strikeouts compared to just eight walks the whole year, including a stretch of five games where Johnson had 36 Ks and no free passes.

Eberle caught fire in late June with a 20-game stretch that seemed nearly impossible to those watching from the stands. He notched 26 hits, nine doubles, four home runs and 17 RBI. Not surprisingly, this also came during the same stretch where the Volcanoes won eight straight games to close the month of June.

The converted third baseman was one of nine Volca-noes named to the 2013 Northwest League All-Star Team. Eberles ninth-inning single lifted the South Division to a come-from-behind 8-7 win, and he was named the games MVP.

Sy, who returned to the Volcanoes after injuring his el-bow in his first professional practice before the start of the 2012 campaign, was another spectacle to witness each day. Managing a rehab program throughout the entire year, Sy capped off the 2013 season with a ter-rific August.

The Illinois native was named the Northwest League Offensive Player of the Week from August 12-19 de-spite playing in just four games during that time. But,

he made them count. Sy went 9-for-15 with seven runs, two doubles, two homers (including a grand slam) and nine RBI. The shortstop also finished third in the NWL with 41 RBI.

Other veterans followed in their footsteps, especially a pair of pitchers on the mound.

Andrew Leenhouts won nine games in 15 starts with the Volcanoes last year, just one off the franchise mark. Leenhouts wrapped up the campaign with the third-best ERA for a starting pitcher in the NWL (2.39) and quietly went about his business each start. The lefty from Massachusetts was never flashy, but he was of-ten regarded as a steady starter who gave the Volcanoes high-powered offense a chance to win the game.

Raymundo Monteros early professional career was off to a rocky start before the 2013 season. Montero, a native of the Dominican Republic, shuffled back and forth from the bullpen to the starting rotation in the 2012 season. When the San Francisco Giants talent evaluators saw his raw emotion fuel his late-inning re-lief appearances in Spring Training, they quickly lined him up to be the Volcanoes closer.

Montero finished second in the league with 14 saves and finished 24 games for the Volcanoes last year. The 14 saves he racked up are tied for 6th on the Volcanoes franchise saves leaderboard.

There were also the inspiring stories of two relievers that have thrived in the Giants minor league system despite their initial draft evaluations.

Jacob Smith, the 48th-round pick (1,467 overall) from the 2011 draft, emerged from a background of home schooling and floating from school to school in his col-lege days to becoming one of the most dominant relief pitchers in the Northwest League. Smith was a strike-out machine (54 Ks) and earned the trust of Volcanoes manager Gary Davenport to always be good for mul-tiple innings (16 of 19 outings, Smith recorded more than three outs). Smith was one of the nine Volcanoes All-Stars.

Jake Shadle, picked up in the 44th Round of the 2010 Draft, made the jump to Salem-Keizer after three sea-sons with the Scottsdale Giants. Shadle, another North-west product from Graham, Washington, routinely gobbled up innings making 21 appearances while going

    VOLCANOESS A L E M K E I Z E R38.2 innings. He was also the master of the strikeout with 40 on the season.

The Volcanoes also received top talent from the Giants 2013 draft class that pushed the Volcanoes to the play-offs.

Brian Ragira, the fourth-round pick from Stanford, was regarded as one of the best offensive first base-men in the draft, and it showed. Despite playing only 47 games after debuting with Salem-Keizer on July 7, Ragira notched the fifth-most RBI in the Northwest League at 36 while also seeing some time in the outfield to diversify and increase his draft prospects as the year continued.

Tyler Horan, the former Virginia Tech baseball star picked up in the eighth-round, made a huge splash in the outfield. Horan hit .295 with 11 doubles, four homers with 25 RBI in a two-month span with Salem-Keizer.

Brandon Bednar proved to be a Swiss Army Knife-type player, excelling defensively at three infield positions. The 12th-round Florida Gulf Coast University selec-tions debut would be a sign of things to come, lifting the Volcanoes to a victory over Vancouver with a 2-for-5 day with a double and 3 RBI. The Stuart, Florida, native wrapped up the year hitting .272 with nine dou-bles, six home runs, and 34 RBI while showing some speed on the base paths with 11 steals.

The Volcanoes clinched their first playoff berth since the 2009 season by virtue of winning the South Divi-sion first-half title with a 4-3 win over Eugene July 17. The Boise Hawks were hot on Salem-Keizers tail for much of the season, but a series sweep of the Emeralds and a hiccup from the Hawks put the Volcanoes back in the playoffs.

It was good timing the Volcanoes clinched a playoff spot given what would happen next when the team traveled to Tri-City the next day for a five-game series. Not only would Salem-Keizer drop the series 4-1, but it would also be on the wrong side of history.

On July 20, the Dust Devils no-hit the Volcanoes in a 3-0 win. Tri-City pitchers Sam Moll, Shane Broyles, Jerad McCrummen and Trend Daniel combined to no-no the Volcanoes for the first time in franchise history. It was only the second ever no-hit bid for Tri-City and marked the first time in 17+ seasons that the Volcanoes could not muster a hit in a game.

The Volcanoes finished the season strong with a season sweep of Eugene. The 12-0 season mark against the Emeralds marks the first time in the Northwest League history that a divisional sweep of 12 games occurred. Salem-Keizer wrapped up the year with a 47-29 overall record with a 26-10 South Division record.

The Volcanoes met Boise in the postseason with Game 1 at Memorial Stadium. Hawks starter Paul Blackburn kept the Salem-Keizer bats off balance all night with seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while tossing eight strikeouts. Boise would go on to win the opening game 3-0 in the best-of-three series. But the Volcanoes took solace that they were returning home for two more games with Chris Johnson getting the starting nod the following night.

The next contest turned out to be anything but a pitch-ers duel with both Boise and Salem-Keizer posting big innings off both starters. Johnson exited the game in the third inning, allowing seven runs on six hits with an uncharacteristic three walks as well.
