STRING ORCHESTRA - Ansgarius Aylward Ansgarius Aylward, Assistant Concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director of the Canisius College Chamber Orchestra, began his musical studies on piano at age seven. Violin entered the picture soon thereafter and he was fortunate early on to study with Richard Burgin, Concertmaster of the Boston Symphony and himself a student of the famed Russian pedagogue Leopold Auer. In his teens Mr. Aylward joined the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra as Concertmaster. With GBYSO he performed for the first time at Carnegie Hall and at the White House for President and Mrs. Kennedy. After graduation from the historic Boston Latin School he was awarded a full scholarship to attend the New England Conservatory of Music. While there he made an extensive State Department sponsored tour of the former Soviet Union with concerts in the eight largest capital cities. After receiving his Bachelor of Music degree from NEC, Mr. Aylward earned his Master of Music

degree from Yale University, School of Music where he studied violin with Broadus Erle, leader of the New Music and Yale Quartets, and conducting with Gustav Meier. Mr. Aylward’s early professional career included performances at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Tanglewood Festival, New College Music Festival in Sarasota, Colorado Philharmonic Orchestra and four seasons with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In 1973 Michael Tilson Thomas invited him to join the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. With the BPO Mr. Aylward has appeared as soloist multiple times, performing both standard concerti (Mendelssohn, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi, Bottesini) and 20th century works by Nicholas Flagello and John Corigliano. He has been Concertmaster of the Ars Nova Musicians’ Chamber Orchestra led by his colleague and long-time stand partner Marylouise Nanna - with Ars Nova he has appeared annually for many years as soloist on the popular “Viva Vivaldi!” Festival. Prior to his appointment as Music Director of the Canisius College Chamber Orchestra, Mr. Aylward served as Music Director of the Greater Buffalo Youth Orchestra. During his tenure the GBYO initiated a series of cross-border exchange concerts with the St. Catharines (Ontario) Youth Orchestra, started the GBYO Music Camp, began the GBYO Piano Concerto Competition, made two educational videos and was showcased on various TV broadcasts including a John F. Kennedy commemorative program on “CBS Sunday Morning” with Charles Kuralt. In the 1970’s and 80’s Mr. Aylward was the leader and founding member of the Nichols String Quartet. Since 1987 he has been guest soloist and recording artist with the Stuttgart Musik Forum in Germany. In 2001 he founded the critically acclaimed “Chamber Music on Elmwood” Festival for which he serves as Director and principal violinist. During the summer months, after teaching at the Bravo Chamber Music Workshop with his colleagues from “Chamber Music on Elmwood” and the BPO, Mr. Aylward enjoys chess and hiking in Acadia National Park.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE - Jay Ashby Jay Ashby is a five-time GRAMMY winning producer and has received multiple nominations in other categories, including Arranging and Engineering. A “consummate musician” whose talents “know few bounds” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review), Ashby has performed, toured, and recorded with some of the most renowned jazz artists in the industry for over 25 years. As a member of The United Nation Orchestra, a group originally put together by Dizzy Gillespie, and Dizzy’s Alumni All-Star Big Band, Ashby forged long lasting musical relationships with many jazz greats including Paquito D’Rivera, Jon Faddis, James Moody, Jimmy Heath, Randy Brecker, and Slide Hampton. Through his association with trumpet master Claudio Roditi, Ashby developed a strong affinity for Brazilian Jazz, which led to many years as a soloist with Astrud Gilberto, as well as

arrangements, tours, and recordings with a number of other Brazilian artists including Tania Maria, Kenia, Ivan Lins, Trio Da Paz, and even appearances with two of the “fathers of Bossa Nova,” Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Ashby’s work as a trombonist, a percussionist, an arranger and a producer can be heard on over 175 recordings, covering a continuum of styles from jazz and pop to world music. Ashby’s most recent release, Mistaken Identity (MCG Jazz), with fellow trombonist Steve Davis, received critical acclaim within the jazz industry, remaining on the national air-play list for an unprecedented 16 weeks and reaching as high as #2. A few notable examples that include Ashby’s work as an arranger are ; Live in Paris with Paul Simon, Beyond Brooklyn with Herbie Mann and Phil Woods, A Day Like This with New York Voices, and two of Nancy Wilson’s GRAMMY winners -Turned to Blue and R.S.V.P (Rare Songs, Very Personal). His versatility as a pop trombonist, percussionist, and arranger began in 1999 with pop icon Paul Simon, with whom Ashby has toured and performed extensively both on stage and television. Appearances with Simon include the Today Show, Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with David Letterman, in addition to performing alongside James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, and a host of other artists honoring Paul Simon at the 2007 Gershwin Award Show. Most recently, Ashby participated in the start studded HBO broadcast of the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden. A YAMAHA artist for many years, Ashby conducts master classes, residencies, and clinics worldwide, including annual events in Germany, Brazil, and Russia. He holds degrees from Ithaca College and Duquesne University, and is currently on faculty at Oberlin Conservatory where he serves as Associate Professor of Jazz Arranging.
