Major Jeff Polson, USMC was appointed head coach of the Navy sprint football program during the summer of 2015. Polson became the 30th head coach in the program’s history and takes over for Major Kavan Lake, USMC, who went 19-2 with a CSFL championship over his three years as head coach.

Polson began his Marine Corps career in June 1991 at MCRD Parris Island, S.C. He reported to the 2d Combat Engineer Battalion in Camp Lejeune, N.C. where he was assigned for three years. He moved on to Marine Air Traffic Control Squadron 18 in Okinawa, Japan where he completed a one year unaccompanied tour. At the end of his time in Japan, Polson decided to pursue collegiate education and leave the corps, though he was quickly lured back and applied for the Active Reserve program in December of 1995. Following three years with the I-I Staff, Polson was selected as the first AR Marine for the Marine Corps Enlisted to Officer Program (MECEP).

Beginning in 1998, he went to the University of New Mexico as a member of the NROTC unit where he both trained Midshipmen and Marines for Officer Candidate School, as well as worked on his college degree. It was at New Mexico that he suited up for the Lobo football program under the direction of head coach Rocky Long. As a walk-on, Polson earned a backup role as a special teams player and strong safety behind future NFL Pro Bowler and Chicago Bear, Brian Urlacher during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. He graduated New Mexico in May of 2002 with undergraduate degrees in Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Productions and Operations Management.

Polson was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer in May 2002. Since earning his commission, he served as the 2d Marine Division Adjutant and Casualty Cell Officer in Charge for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) I and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) I. During OIF II between 2003 and 2004, Polson deployed with Task Force 2/2 to Fallujah, Iraq. During OIF 5, Polson deployed with Marine Wing Support Squadron-373 to Al Taqaddum, Iraq as the Logistics Officer and Headquarters Company Commander.

Over the past 10 years, Polson has served in logistics, motor transportation, as an inspecting officer, and operations officer with billets both stateside in the Marine Corps and in the diplomatic security arena overseas. His most recent assignment saw him assume the duties as the Operations Officer for Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (MCESG) in Quantico, Va. where he was responsible for the Marine Security Guard expansion program worldwide as a result of the attacks in Benghazi.

Polson has always been actively involved with athletics as he augmented his two years of playing collegiately at New Mexico with a two-year stint as a member of the Langen Knights semi-professional football team in Langen, Germany during his stay in Europe as an inspection officer in 2010 and 2011.

2015 Season PreviewAs the reigning champions of the Collegiate Sprint Football League, the Navy sprint football team will look to hold its place atop the standings as the premier program in the league in 2015. Under the direction of first-year head coach Jeff Polson, USMC, the Mids will attempt to claim its 37th CSFL this fall during its 70th season of play.

OffenseThe Mids’ offensive success will hinge greatly on the integration of veteran standouts in the backfield and on the outside at the receiver position, and newcomers in quarterback and offensive line roles.

Senior Eric Wellmon, the reigning CSFL Most Valuable Player, is back for his senior season and will be looking to duplicate his record-setting 2014 campaign. As a junior, the running back rushed for a program-record 1,269 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground in seven games of action. A workhorse for the Mids, Wellmon toted the football an average of 26.3 times a game.

Junior James Lieto will fill the role of top reserve running back after rushing for 135 yards in 2014.

While, Wellmon will be counted on as the lead running back for Polson’s offense, fellow senior Corey Garcia will once again be featured throughout the game plan in formations as a slot back and wide receiver. The multi-talented athlete totaled 594 all-purpose yards last season with 109 coming on rushes, 211 via receptions and 274 from kickoff and punt returns.

At the receiver position, the Mids will miss the contributions of Star Game standout Colin Butler (8 catches, 87 yards and 2 touchdowns versus Army), who joined the ranks of Ken Niumatalolo’s full-sized football squad, but return all-league performer Matthew Hite, Michael Byrne and Glen Harris. Hite, a downfield threat, finished the 2014 season with a team-high 301 receiving yards on 11 catches for a 27.4 yards per catch average. All three receivers will be seniors in 2015.

2014 All-CSFL First Team honoree senior Michael Granthom will lead a re-worked offensive line that graduated four starters. A stalwart in the trenches as an offensive guard, Granthom will be joined on the line this season by veterans junior Kyle Robb, junior Ross Gilchriest and sophomore Charles Eshenour, who are moving up from reserve roles. Offensive newcomer Jake Fernandes, a linebacker in 2014, is slated to start at center for the Mids as a sophomore.

Nick Deterding may have the biggest shoes to fill this season for Navy as the all-around junior athlete will take over the reigns of All-CSFL second teamer Joe Hampton at quarterback. The May 2015 graduate was most efficient passer in the CSFL last season with a 54.9 completion rate and a 16-6 touchdown to interception ratio. Deterding, a two-year member of the track and field program, received reps last season on the sprint football team as a backup quarterback, though his biggest impact was felt as the program’s leading kickoff returner. Freshman Jimmy Wynne will be the top backup to Deterding after a strong preseason camp.

DefenseNavy’s defense has a slightly more veteran feel to it as the Mids return six starters with five other players being elevated from leading reserve roles. Coming off a season in which its defense allowed just 178.9 total yards, 20.3 rushing yards and 13.9 points per game, a strong cast of upperclassmen will be looked upon to recreate similar results.

Set to play in a familiar 4-2-5 alignment, Navy’s front six will be led by the trio of Temple Sloan, Collin Ascherl and Keegan Kush. Sloan, one of Navy’s most prolific tacklers dur-ing his first three seasons with 25 or more stops in each year, moves up from linebacker to take a spot on the defensive line. Sloan will look to replace Chris Mershon’s produc-tion as a defensive end. Mershon ended his four-year career in 2014 with a program-record 29 career sacks.

Seniors Hardy Davis and Marquis White, and junior Blake Papet will set up alongside Sloan on the defensive line. In 2014, the trio combined for 39 tackles and 5.0 tackles for loss in a mixture of starting and reserve action.

Ascherl and Kush will be counted on to control the middle of the field at the linebacker position for the Mids in 2015. Both players have shown a penchant for finding the ball and stopping the action during their prior years with Mids. Ascherl, a three-year starter,

has made 59 tackles over his time on the team with three interceptions, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles as supplementary stats. After being elevated to a starting role in 2014 as a sophomore, Kush recorded a team-high 42 tackles on his way to earning All-CSFL First Team honors. A consistent menace to opposing offenses, Kush had six or more tackles in five of the seven games in 2014.

The defensive backfield should also once again be a strength of the Mids as senior Dan Gilmore and junior Kendall Mackey will patrol safety positions with senior Ian Anderson as a rover. After breaking preseason camp, junior Rex Willis and sophomores Devin Graves and Patrick McMahan are slated to hold down spots as corner and nickel backs.

Gilmore and Mackey were two of the most destructive and troublesome players for rival CSFL teams to deal with in 2014 as Gilmore led the league with 12 passes defended (nine break-ups and three interceptions) on his way to a nod on the All-CSFL First Team. His teammate at the safety position, Mackey, was a ballhawk as well, with eight passes defended (seven break-ups and one interception). They added to their personal statlines with tackle totals of 23 for Gilmore and 35 for Mackey.

In the roving and cornerback positions, the trio of Anderson, Graves and McMahan will all receive their first starting assignments after earning reserve reps in 2014. Graves led the trio with 12 tackles and two pass break-ups. Willis will be a player to watch as the junior will be looking to recapture his strong level of play that earned him honorable mention All-CSFL accolades as a freshman in 2013. Willis was sidelined for the entire 2014 season after suffering an injury in the preseason.

Senior Carter Reading, juniors Drew Dziwulski and Nick Abramson, as well as sopho-mores Alex Oldham and Luke Coughlin are returners that could see important reserve snaps early in the season.

Special TeamsSenior placekicker Brett Deters and junior punter Jules Murphy will be back in their respective positions for the second year in a row for the Midshipmen. A strong-legged kicker that has handled kickoff duties since 2013, Deters took over the place-kicking role in 2014 and converted 24 PATs and one field goal for 27 total points. Meanwhile, Murphy was named to the All-CSFL First Team after connecting on punts for a 39.4 yards per kick average.

NewcomersThe 2015 version of Navy’s roster will show 25 new names appearing across a variety of positions. There is at least one newcomer listed amongst every one of positional depth charts.

The first-year players are not all just freshmen as backup offensive lineman Dakota Herting and backup wide receiver Austin Rogers are sophomores, who joined the program in the spring and have played themselves into roles on the second team.

In total, Navy will look to incorporate two seniors, two juniors, six sophomores and 15 plebes into its game planning this season.
