Come explore with us! This brochure outlines our summer explorations events. Most events are open to all youth. Workshops denoted with a “” provide the option for participants to complete a project to show at fair. Use the registration form on our website to sign-up for your preferences. Come join the fun and explore with us!

Piano Guts Workshop

Who: 2nd–8th graders (grade just completed).

What: Learn how pianos work, see the inside of a piano, and learn

the history of the piano.

When: Tues. June 2. Carpool leaving Garner Ed Center at 1:30 PM

and returning at 4:30 PM.

Where: Dewey Kruger Music, Northwood, IA

Cost: FREE, includes a snack.

RSVP: Tues. May 26. Space is limited to 12.

Ag Museum Tour

Who: Anyone.

What: Tour the Hancock County Ag Museum and see what farming was like 100 years ago. Experience shucking corn and making

rope.

When: Wed. June 3 from 2:30 PM—5:00 PM.

Where: 2210 Jewel Avenue, Britt (Hancock County Fairgrounds).

Cost: FREE, includes a snack.

RSVP: Mon. June 1.

Garner Robotics Camp

Who: 4th–8th graders (grade just completed).

What: Learn the basics of building and programming a LEGO Robot and what being on a FLL team is about. Recommended for

kids who wish to join a FLL team in the fall.

When: Thurs. June 4 & Fri. June 5

from 12:30 PM—3:30 PM.

Where: Garner Ed Center, 325 W. 8th Street, Garner

Cost: $15, includes a snack.

RSVP: Fri. May 22. Space is limited to 20.

Britt Robotics Camp

Who: 4th–8th graders (grade just completed).

What: Learn the basics of building and programming a LEGO Robot and what being on a FLL team is about. Recommended for

kids who wish to join a FLL team in the fall.

When: Thurs. June 11 & Fri. June 12

from 12:30 PM—3:30 PM.

Where: Britt Public Library

Cost: $15, includes a snack.

RSVP: Fri. May 22. Space is limited to 20.

Weld It! Workshop

Who: 6th–12th grade (grade just completed).

What: Learn the basics of welding.

When: Thurs. June 11 from 6:00 PM—7:30 PM.

Where: Garner-Hayfield-Ventura High school

Cost: $10.

RSVP: Mon. June 1. Space is limited to 12.

T-Shirt Graphics Workshop

Who: 4th–12th graders (grade just completed).

What: Design and print t-shirts. Learn the process of how a design

goes from an idea to on the shirt.

When: Tues. June 9 from 2:00 PM—4:00 PM.

Where: Gifts Sew Sweet, 1 Main Ave S, Britt

Cost: $10, includes a custom t-shirt.

RSVP: Mon. June 1. T-shirt design submissions are due as well. Space is limited to 20.

Poultry Workshop

Who: Anyone.

What: Colt Churchill, who has shown and received “Best in Show” award at the Iowa State Fair for 8-years, will present on the following poultry topics: identifying gender & breeds,

showmanship, & how to prepare for a show.

When: Thurs. June 4 from 6:00 PM—7:00 PM.

Where: Hancock County District Fairgrounds

Cost: FREE.

RSVP: Thurs. May 28.

Jr. 4-H Camp

Who: 4th–6th graders (grade just completed).

What: Sleep in tents, campfire cookouts, canoe, fish, swim,

geo-caching, Frisbee golf and fun with friends!

When: Check-in Sun. June 14 at 5:30 PM—6:00 PM.

Check-out Mon. June 15 at 5:30 PM—6:00 PM.

Where: Crystal Lake Park, 1045 320th Street

Cost: $20 for 4-Hers, $25 for non-4-Hers.

Fee includes all meals and activities.

RSVP: Mon. June 1. Space is limited to 36 (from 3 counties).

Knit It! Workshop

Who: 5th–12th grade (grade just completed).

What: Rachel Weaver will demonstrate how to make a scarf by

knitting with your arms.

When: Tues. June 23, 2015 from 2:30 PM—4:00 PM.

Where: Garner Ed Center, 325 W. 8th Street, Garner

Cost: $5, includes supplies.

RSVP: Tues. June 16. Space is limited to 20.

Wire It! Electrical Workshop

T-Shirt Upcycle Workshop

Who: 2nd–5th grade (grade just completed).

What: Come experiment with us as we explore science and make things FIZZ, BUBBLE, and GOO! What makes Alka Seltzer

fizz? Can you really make homemade SLIME?

When: Thurs. July 30, 12:30 PM—3:30 PM.

Where: Garner Ed Center, 325 W. 8th Street, Garner

Cost: $5, includes supplies.

RSVP: Thurs. July 23. Space is limited to 25.

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) 101

Who: Open only to current or incoming FLL kids

(going in to 4th–8th grades).

What: FIRST LEGO League 101 is for FLL members who would like to learn about basic programming. Each team will get to build and program a robot and research and present on a topic

(similar to FLL competitions).

When: Tues. Aug. 4 & Wed. Aug. 5, 12:30 PM—4:30 PM.

Where: Garner Ed Center, 325 W. 8th Street, Garner

Cost: $15

RSVP: Tues. July 21. Space is limited to 25.

Advanced FLL Camp

Who: 4th–12th grade (grade just completed).

What: Come and go workshop. Participants can either make a t-shirt bag purse (will take 1-hr & need 1 shirt) or make a t-shirt scarf (will take 3-hrs & need 5-6 shirts) or both! Reference our website at www.extension.iastate.edu/hancock for additional

details on this fun workshop.

When: Tues. June 16, 9:00 AM—4:00 PM

(This is a come & go event).

Where: Britt Public Library

Cost: FREE, please pack a sack lunch if you come over lunch hour.

RSVP: Tues. June 9.

Bring own t-shirts or let us know if you need some.

Who: 4th–8th grade (grade just completed).

What: Learn about electricity, how to wire a light bulb, how to make your own flashlight, how to read a circuit diagram. Make a

project to take home and exhibit at the fair.

When: Thurs. June 18 from 6:00 PM—8:30 PM.

Where: Hunt’s Electric, 270 Diagonal St NE, Britt

Cost: $15

RSVP: Thurs. June 11. Space is limited to 20.

Speak It! Communications Tour

Who: 2nd–8th (grade just completed).

What: Tour of North Iowa Broadcasting (home of 98.7 Kiss Country &

103.7 The Fox) and KIMT news studios.

When: Fri. July 10. Carpool leaves Garner Ed Center at 9:00 AM and returns at 1:30 PM. Possible carpool from Britt if a driver is

available.

Where: Mason City at studios listed above.

Cost: $5, includes lunch.

RSVP: Fri. July 3. Space is limited to 20. Parents—please let us know if you are willing to drive a carpool.

Clover Kids Day on the Farm

Who: K–3rd grade (grade just completed).

What: Visit Hancock County farms to learn about life on the farm.

When: Wed. July 15. Bus leaves Garner Ed Center at 1:30 PM and

returns at 5:00 PM.

Where: Local farms across Hancock County—call our office to know

specific locations.

Cost: $5

RSVP: Thurs. July 9. Space is limited to 50.

Fizz! Bubble! Goo!

Day as a Doctor

Who: K–1st & 2nd–5th grade (grade just completed)

What: Spend the day as a doctor, tour the hospital, get your own stethoscope, dress like a surgeon, look at broken bones, and

more!

When: K–1st grade: Tues. July 7, 8:00 AM—3:00 PM

2nd–5th grade: Thurs. July 9, 8:00 AM—3:00 PM

Where: Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt

Cost: $15, includes lunch and snack

RSVP: Tues. June 30. Space is limited to 20 for K–1st grade and

limited to 30 for 2nd–5th grade.

Who: Open only to current or incoming FLL kids (going in to 5th–8th

grades) and coaches.

What: Advanced Robotics is geared towards FLL kids who would like to learn more about sensors, gears on the robot and more difficult programming. Lori Hanson is the instructor.

When: Tues. Aug. 18—Thurs. Aug. 20, 6:00 PM—8:30 PM.

Where: Garner Ed Center, 325 W. 8th Street, Garner

Cost: $15

RSVP: Tues. August 4. Space is limited to 25.

Fair Exploration Activities The Hancock County District Fair is a big part of 4-H. Listed below are the preparation events and service opportunities related to the Hancock County District Fair. Youth must be 4-H members to exhibit in all 4-H livestock shows.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach programs are available to all without regard to race, color, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, sex, marital status, disability, or status as a U.S. veteran. Inquiries can be directed to the Director of Equal Opportunity and Compliance, 3280 Beardshear Hall, (515) 294-7612. The fees for services listed will be used to off-set direct expenses and to support the 4-H Youth Development County Extension Programs. Events are made possible in part by funding from the Hancock County Foundation Grant.

Fair Clean-up Days (Service)

Who: Anyone.

What: Join us in this community service project sprucing up the Hancock County District Fair grounds to have them look their best for our

county fair.

When: June 13, 2015 from 8:00 AM—12:00 NOON

June 20, 2015 from 8:00 AM—12:00 NOON

Where: Hancock County District Fairgrounds

Achievement Show

Who: Anyone exhibiting 4-H exhibits at fair.

Parents are also welcome to participate.

What: Requirement for Jr. 4-H Members. Get a step ahead by visiting with 4-H judges on what is expected of your exhibit. Practice discussing what you learned with a real judge. Get tips and pointers for how to make

your exhibit State Fair selection quality.

When: June 25, 2015. Come and go event from 1:00 PM—6:00 PM. Exhibitors will visit with judges in order that they arrived. Plan for

about 15 minutes to discuss with the judge.

Where: Garner Ed Center, 325 W. 8th Street, Garner

Cost: FREE.

RSVP: Not required.

Clothing Event (Judging Day)

Who: Any 4-Her who would like to purchase or sew an outfit and be judged on how they selected the outfit and how it fits. Clothing Event also

does a style show at the fair.

What: Model your clothing selection, $15 challenge,

or fashion revue outfit for the judges.

When: July 13, 2015. Call Hancock Co. Extension at 641-923-2856 to schedule a 15-min session

between the times of 9:00 AM—4:00 PM.

Where: Garner Ed Center, 325 W. 8th Street, Garner

Concord Care 4-H Fair (Service)

Who: Any 4-Her who would like to show exhibits, skits, songs, or show small animals to

residents.

What: Join us in this community service project by bringing the fair to residents at Concord Care

Center.

When: July 17, 2015 from 2:00 PM—3:30 PM
