What can we expect in the future?

ENVISION JEFFERSON AVENUE

The City of Temecula has recently conducted several visioning workshops, dubbed “Envision Jefferson”, bringing together a diverse mix of property owners, business owners, real estate brokers, and other interested community members, to imagine the future possibilities for this 560 acre site located immediately north of Temecula’s Old Town. The community’s vision will drive what will ultimately become Uptown Jefferson, a unique metropolitan experience, rivaled by no other place in the city or region. This area remains an important economic asset to the community, affirming that future efforts are needed to spark its revitalization and ultimate renaissance. Uptown Jefferson will be Temecula’s newest destination and will provide the city’s newest up and-coming neighborhoods.

Vibrant, sophisticated and unique, the area will be home to a diverse mix of residents. People of all ages, experiences and interests will be drawn to the area by its offering of a more urban lifestyle. The area is envisioned to be up-scale and culturally robust, offering a mix of homes, shops, offices, restaurants and other locally-serving uses, artfully linked together through pedestrian friendly green spaces, sidewalks, and trails. Uptown Jefferson will soon emerge, driven by a strategic, community-based vision, well designed and built from the collective efforts of public participation, private development, and public investments. We can’t wait to see what the future will bring!

Opportunities are an essential part of the City of Temecula’s plan for its youth. The City’s Youth Master Plan has implemented a variety of programs and opportunities aimed at helping the youth of today become the leaders of tomorrow.

For high school, undergraduate and post-graduate college level students, the City of Temecula offers a Fellowship Program and an Internship Program intended to allow students to work in their areas of interest and gain valuable work experience. Students are given the unique opportunity to learn skills and knowledge that will enhance their job prospects by working in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

The City of Temecula has not forgotten those who are looking primarily for information. The City of Temecula College and Vocational Fair takes place every year, and the event continues to grow to include over 170 colleges, universities, vocational schools and military service representatives from across the country. The event’s great diversity and wealth of information makes it a prominent college fair in the region.

For some, college still may be a distant thought. With the help of members from the community, the City of Temecula hosts an annual science fair, dubbed the “Science and Technology Fair”. Prior to implementing the fair, students lacked an outlet to share their great creativity in the areas of science and technology. This event has proven to be a prized opportunity for youth and will not be a tradition that stops any time soon.

Following the inspiration that is the Youth Master Plan, Temecula is proud to invest in its future leaders who will continue to make Temecula the outstanding success it is today.

In 2013, the City of Temecula was recognized as a bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. This designation is an indication of the community’s support for bike lanes and trails, and the City’s commitment to alternative modes of transportation. The plan update will include a checklist to help the City track its progress (measured in miles of bike lanes, outreach programs, number of daily bicycle commuters, number of bike racks, etc.) in order to move from bronze to silver, gold, and eventually platinum!

During the past year, the City has been working with the consulting firm, KTU+A to update to the Trails and Bikeways Master Plan to develop a bicycle network focused on improved safety, and filling in the gaps of its existing bicycle and trail network. The plan will focus on building the infrastructure to connect Old Town, Wine Country, shopping centers, schools, and the City’s many parks, trails and open space areas. The plan will also have suggested bike routes, including a loop around the City, a route connecting Wine Country to Old Town, and a north-south route for mountain bikes utilizing existing easements with dirt roads.

Connecting trails and bike lanes is essential for creating a healthy and livable community. Healthy and livable communities are where

employees, entrepreneurs and business owners want to live and work. Cities with a high quality of life attract creative and talented workers as well as employers who are the engine for a community’s economic growth. The City continues to position itself as a hub for recreation and economic growth in southwest Riverside County. Look for new bike lanes, trail openings, intersection treatments,

and bike racks in the near future.

In addition to the Trails and Bikeways Plan update, the City partnered with the Sierra Club, National Park Service, and neighboring Cities of Murrieta, Wildomar, and Lake Elsinore on development of a multi-use trail along the Murrieta Creek corridor that will connect the four cities approximately 14 miles from Old Town Temecula to Lake Elsinore. Construction will be phased over several years, but in the meantime, an interim trail alignment will be highlighted beginning early June 2015 to celebrate

National Trails Day.

For more information on the plan update or new sharrows and bike lanes that have been added to the City’s bike/trail network, please visit the www.hikebiketemecula.org or find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/hikebiketemecula.
