In the day of smartphones, tablets, and social media, the Foundation understands that it is increasingly important to provide up-to-date information. That is why this fall marked the launch of several online platforms created to improve donor communication. The first was a makeover to the Foundation’s website. What began as a collaborative effort with two Topeka High students, developed into a transformation which will provide a solid platform to use in communicating to current and potential donors. To view the new site, visit www. topekacommunityfoundation.org. Donors with donor advised funds will notice a section called Donor Central under the Donors tab. This feature is an online portal that gives donors secure access to fund and grantmaking information, and enables them to recommend grants anytime, anywhere, even from their smartphone or tablet. We are excited to offer donors a new way to maximize their engagement with their fund that presents them with instant accessibility. “Providing technology tools to simplify and streamline charitable giving is another way we add value to having a fund at the Foundation,” Foundation Vice President, Marsha Pope, said. In conjunction with the increased online access, the Foundation has also created electronic newsletters to provide additional information to our Donor Advised and Scholarship fund donors. These quarterly electronic newsletters will present relevant information to donors about their specific type of fund. The Foundation is happy to assist donors with their charitable giving. With increased adaptability, it is our goal to provide services that best meet our donors’ needs. For more information about these services, contact Marsha at 785.272.4804. Providing outstanding personalized service to our donors is a hallmark of the Topeka Community Foundation. I believe that there is no substitute for hands-on service and that our donors truly appreciate this. However, the world has become heavily dependent on electronic messaging and social media in communicating with one another. Without sacrificing the personal touch we currently offer, we recently developed some new communication tools which will help us “keep up with the Joneses.” If you haven’t checked out our new and revamped website, I invite you to do so. I hope you find it easy to navigate and a place where many of your questions about the Foundation can be answered.

To view the new site, visit www.topekacommunityfoundation.org.

Donors with donor advised funds will notice a section called Donor Central under the Donors tab. This feature is an onl ine por tal that gives donors secure access to fund and grantmaking information, and enables them to recommend grants anytime, anywhere, even from their smartphone or tablet.

Meet our Community Investment Committee The Topeka Community Foundation’s Community Investment Committee diligently reviews all grant applications for the community foundation’s funding initiatives. The nervousness we noted in our last report manifested itself this quarter in the worst market decline in four years. Our portfolio’s benchmark was down 7.4%, but our Portfolio did somewhat better, only being down 6.13%. Year to date our portfolio is -5.3%, comparing favorably to our benchmark at -5.8%.

The concerns in the third quarter were driven by a worldwide slowdown, led primarily by China. China has been a large consumer of energy and natural resources so its slowdown created concerns about future demand for these products impacting stock prices globally. In addition, speculation of a rate increase by the Federal Reserve caused investors to nervously watch the September meeting, but news that an increase would be delayed led to more worry about the state of the economy, compounding concerns that were already negatively impacting the market.

The result was the first significant decline in the market in four years.

While unpleasant, it is not uncommon for equity markets to experience periodic corrections. Over time however, the equity markets have in fact delivered positive returns in 26 of the last 34 years.

We know that the markets can be unnerving, even to seasoned investors. Keep in mind, however, as you consider your year-end giving, that markets like this may well represent a good opportunity to put more money to work. And rest assured that the Asset Management Committee is diligently working with our managers to keep our portfolio well diversified and resilient in all market cycles.

Tips on Year-end Giving

As this year draws to a close, many people are considering making year-end gifts to charity. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your giving and take advantage of the available tax benefits.

(Please consult with your tax advisor to ensure your decisions are appropriate for your unique tax situation.)

Make your gifts by December 31, 2015 to take a deduction on your 2015 tax return. By making a gift to your donor advised fund by December 31, you will receive a deduction immediately and then can take your time choosing the charities which will ultimately

receive grants.Ensure that your gifts are made to

qualified organizations in order to take a deduction. Gifts to your fund at the Community Foundation are eligible for the maximum deduction allowed by law. When you make grant recommendations from your donor advised fund to your favorite charities, the Foundation’s qualified grantmaking staff will perform all necessary due diligence.

Save your gift documentation to support your charitable contribution deductions. This is easy by making a gift to your fund at the Foundation. We process your grant requests

and can work directly with your tax preparer to provide the information needed to support your charitable deductions.

Consider giving appreciated long-term securities.  Why? Because you can deduct the fair market value and avoid the capital gains tax you would pay if you sold the stock.

Know your charitable deduction limit; the amount you can deduct depends on several factors. Your tax advisor can assist you in this determination.

If you’re interested in making an end of the year gift, contact Foundation President, Roger Viola, at 785.272.4804.
