Art History Lecture with Rocky Ruggiero

Rocky Ruggiero is originally from Providence, RI. He is a graduate

of the College of the Holy Cross where he majored in Art History

and Pre- Medicine. In 1995 he was awarded a Florence Fellow¬s-

hip by Syracuse University where he continued his art historical

studies at a graduate level. He has lived in Florence for the past

twelve years teaching for various American universities including

Syracuse, Kent. St., Vanderbilt and Boston College. Prof. Rug¬g-

iero specializes in Early Renaissance Architecture, although he has

lectured on subjects ranging from ancient art and architectu¬re

through the Italian Baroque. He starred in the recent History

Channel series, Engineering an Empire: Da Vinci World episode as

an expert witness, as well as a PBS program on the architecture of

Brunelleschi. He also shares his knowledge and love of Florentine

art as an advisory board member of the non-profit group Friends

of Florence which has raised funds for the restoration of various

works of art throughout the city

Cooking Class at Desinare Cooking School

DESINARE is an old-fashioned Florentine term for that time

of day when the family would gather around the table to eat. It

refers not just to the act of dining but to the ritual of conviviality,

the need to take a break from work to talk, exchange ideas, renew

the bonds of love that have long been at the heart of our domestic

culture. Inspired by this concept, we wanted to create a place that

was open to food in the broadest, most all-encompassing sense

Lecture with Artist Jules Maidoff

Jules Maidoff has been making art for over 60 years and enjoys

international recognition.

His work is in the private collections af many including; Elizabeth

Sackler Chair of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Robert Joffry,

founder of the Joffry Ballet Company, Connie Brittan actress (star

of Nashville, The West Wing and friday Night Lights), President

Sandro Pertini (ITALY), Ravi Shankar, and so many others.

His work is in the collections of many Museum and State

Collections including the Royal Belgian Collection, Museum of

Spirito Sancto, Lisbon, as well as in the collections of the cities

of,Orvieto, Italy, San Giovanni Valdarno, Italy, Fabriano, Italy,

Leiria, Portugal, and has been invited to over 15 special one person

exhibitions worldwide.

He has had more than 100 one person exhibits in the US, Italy,

Germany, Holland, Spain, Holland and Portugal including a major

one person exhibition here in Florence at the Marino Marini

Museum 5 years ago.

His work speaks about his life, and his figurative almost

expressionist style is one based on his searching for the meanings

behind the marks, the symbols and observations that create a new

reality.

Jules arrived in Italy first in 1956 as a Fulbright Grantee and then

returned permanently in 1973 to his 17 room Farmhouse in Pian di

Sco with his wife and 4 children and where he started the school

SACI which later opened in Florence in 1975 and continues to the

present day.

The Torrigiani garden with nearly seventeen acres hidden in the

heart of Florence, is the largest privately owned garden in Europe

situated within city boundaries.

Renowned in the sixteenth century as a botanical garden it had a

revival in the early nineteenth century when the Marquis Pietro

Torrigiani inherited the property and started acquiring the sur-

rounding land.

This he transformed into a ‘romantic park’ in the english style,

adhering to the fashion of the time, which covered an area of 25

acres. The architect Luigi de Cambray Digny, who had recently re-

novated the Oricellari gardens to much acclaim was commissio-

ned to re-design the garden.

This he accomplished cleverly combining natural elements with

artificially made landscaping and managing to include many sym-

bols of an esoteric nature.

Members are invited to explore these beautiful private gardens

guided by the Marchese Torrigiani Malaspina.
