After its scheduled completion in September, it will be the largest such telescope in the world. A team successfully tested the installation of the tele- scope’s “retina”, a mechanism weighing 30 metric tons and suspended 140-160 meters above the half-finished reflec- tor dish which will collect sig- nals from the universe. The telescope, 500 meters in diameter and usually known as FAST, is composed of 4,500 mostly triangular panels with sides measuring 11 meters that create a parabolic shape or hemisphere. The motion of the panels alters the collective shape of the anten- na, which is capable of reflect- ing radio signals from the universe to a focal point, where the receiver dome sits. “So far, one of the most important steps has been com- pleted. We will finish install- ing all the panels by June 2016, and strive to debug the whole system by the end of Septem- ber,” Li Di, a chief scientist from the National Astronomi- cal Observatories affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told China Daily. The working mechanism of FAST, or Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope, is similar to any television antenna on a roof, according to Li. But FAST is so much larger that “if you fill it with wine, every one of the world’s seven billion people could get a share of about five bottles”, he said. FAST is unique because 4,350 panels have been designed to move up and down, which enables the whole hemisphere to rotate or to reshape. “With a larger signal receiv- ing area and more flexibility, FAST will be able to scan two times more sky area than Are- cibo, with three to five times higher sensitivity,” Li said. FAST was first proposed in 1993 by Chinese astronomers, as one of several competing concepts for the international Square Kilometer Array project — a project by astronomers worldwide to build the next generation radio observatory. “Ultimately, exploring the unknown is the nature of mankind, which is as visceral as feeding and clothing our- selves. It drives us to a greater future,” he said. Lister Staveley-Smith, an astronomer at the University of Western Australia, expects new discoveries from FAST, including previously unknown pulsars in the Milky Way and even in other more distant galaxies. “The FAST’s sensitivity and resolution will allow an extremely comprehensive study of thousands of galaxies in different environments in the local universe,” he said in an e-mail exchange with Chi- na Daily. Then, gradually, we found out that besides visible light, there are more wavelengths that can be used to explore messages coming from the universe for example, radio waves. However, a major obstacle keeps us from hearing weak cosmic signals: Urbaniza- tion and the wide applica- tion of electronic devices that came with the advance- ment of technology. That has driven scientists from six countries, including China, Australia and Cana- da, to start searching for a site devoid of interference from earthbound electro- magnetic signals. “Mobile phones, televi- sions, lights wherever there are people, there is electromagnetic interfer- ence,” said Li Di, a chief sci- entist from the National Astronomical Observatories affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Pingtang, a small, sparsely- populated county located in the mountainous regions of Guizhou province, was thought to be a good candi- date to become home of the International Square Kilome- ter Array, or SKA. As pro- posed in the 1990s, it would have been the largest radio telescope on Earth. But the design of choice moved toward a telescope known as a “synthesis array”, in which signals from many small, widely-spaced dishes are combined to produce images of very high resolu- tion. So it was decided by the SKA committee that the tele- scope would be built in either South Africa or Australia. After the plan for Pingtang was set aside, the Chinese government invested in a large telescope known as FAST at the site. It is expect- ed to be completed next year. On Thursday, the center had issued a warning on the com- ing blizzard and reminded res- idents in northern China of the sharp decline in temperature and possible traffic difficulties. On Saturday, the traffic was less than the previous week- end as many people heeded the warnings and stayed home. “Such a heavy snowfall has not occurred often before, and the pre-warning helped to alert people of possible dan- gers,” said Sun Jun, chief fore- caster at the center. Before the snow, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport organized a team of 4,100 rescuers to deal with potential accidents. The com- mission also prepared 1,500 machines and 24,000 metric tons of de-icing liquid and salt to melt the snow. Airports canceled flights, as the airplanes would not be able to take off and land safely on slippery runways. The Beijing Capital International Airport alone canceled about 150 flights by Sunday afternoon, accord- ing to the airport’s statement. Scientists carried out thelast step in testing a key com­ponent of China’s giganticradio telescope on Saturday.After its scheduledcompletionin September, it will be thelargest such telescope in theworld.
