TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema & Music - 14As expected, music dominated ‘Tukaram’ which had as

many as thirty songs. That was the period when another Tamilmovie had as many as fifty songs and this fact was advertisedwith pride and pomp! A 1930s film, ‘Sangeetha Lava Kusa’ had63 songs! The famous Tamil writer and cult figure of his day,Kalki (Ra. Krishnamurthy), a master of Tamil proseand punning, described such films as ‘Paatties’ and not ‘Talk-ies’!

Out of the thirty songs in ‘Tukaram’, Musiri sang sixteen. Theragas used were Bilahari, Devagandhari, Hamsanaadam,Yadukulakambhodhi, Harikambhodhi. Kunthalavarali,Neelambari. Naadhanaamakriya, Simhendramadhyamam.Reethigowla, Mayamalavagowla. Khamas and Kambhodhi. The composer was the living legend and ‘Thamizh Thyagaiah’,Papanasam Sivan, and Musiri assisted him in the composingof his own songs. Some songs were based on Musiri’s own kraitslike ‘Thiruvadi Charanam...’ A few Tukaram Marathi bhajanswere also used.

‘Tukaram’, advertised as ‘Musiri Tukaram’, did reasonablywell at the box office, though it was not a big hit. But Musiri’ssongs became popular. Critics commented caustically onMusiri’s acting and hinted that he should leave films alone andstick to his music! He did get offers to act later, buthe chose to forget all about movies and forged ahead to grow asa towering giant of Carnatic music. However the movie did helpto boost his singing career.

No print of this rare film is known to exist today. Only thegramophone discs, still photos, song books, and lingering memo-ries remain. A pity indeed!

Sadly Musiri did not enjoy good health, suffering from pleu-risy which, to some extent, hampered his professional growth. He had to restrict his concerts and travels in the country andneighbouring lands.

But many honours sought him. He was appointed as Prin-cipal of Central College of Music, Madras where he distin-guished himself for many years. Other honours he receivedwere ‘Sangeetha Kalanidhi’ by Madras Music Academy,Asthana Vidwan of Travancore, Sangeetha Natak AkademiAward, ‘Isai Peraringnar’ by Thamizh Isai Sangam, ‘SangeethaKala Sikhamani’. And finally, ‘Padma Bhushan’ from CentralGovernment.

After a spectacular life and career full of fame, honoursand all, Musiri Subramania Iyer passed away on March, 24,1975 at the age of 76. The giant is gone but his music livesforever.Oliver Road in Mylapore, where he lived for many- years, hasbeen named after him as Musiri Subramania Iyer road. M. M. DHANDAPANI DESIKAR

Certain Classical Carnatic music songs many of which areeternal favorites have been associated with one and only oneclassical musician. Indeed the songs and the musician are sosynonymous that other musicians invariably avoid them.Such is the popularity of this musician.

Some such popular songs include ‘Thaamarai pootthathadhakamadee’, ‘Thoothu nee solli vaaraay’, ‘Jagadjananisukha vaani Kalyani, ‘Inba kanaa ondru kanden’,‘Varugalaamo’, ‘Piravaa varam thaarum’, ‘Sivaloka naathanaikandu’, ‘Ennappan allavaa’, ‘Iyey metha kadinam’. Some ofthese popular songs are from the movie ‘Nandanaar’.

The outstanding musician who rendered the songs and whostill lives in the souls, hearts and minds of music lovers of SouthIndia is M. M. Dhandapani Desikar.

A staunch votary of the Tamizh Isai movement whichgathered strength in the early 1940s, Desikar was also one ofthe beneficiaries of the movement because it helped to zoomhis career ahead. The Thamizh Isai movement was indeed anoff-shoot of the Non-Brahmin Movement, which reared itshead sometime in the early decades of the 20th century. Atthat time and even today, most of the top musicians hailed fromthe Brahmin community and the Non-Brahmin Movementwas set up mainly against them.

The Movement advocated that, in Carnatic music concertsin the Tamil areas of the old Madras Presidency, songs shouldbe sung only in Tamil and not in Telugu in which Saint ThyagarajaSwamigal and some others had composed their songs. TheMovement gathered strength because some of the Brahminsdeeply involved in music were its staunch supporters.

They were, among others, Papanasam Sivan, Kalki (Ra.Krishnamurthy), Rajaji and M. S. Subbulakshmi. Except MS,the others were Brahmins by birth and MS was married to T.Sathasivam who was a Brahmin. Among the musicians, M. K.Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and Dhandapani Desikar were alsostrong supporters of this Movement. Desikar, especially, hada passion to sing only Tamil songs and not songs in any otherlanguage unless the situation and circumstances were compel-ling. (To be continued)

Students affected by traffic chaosoutside Mootha Girls’ School

Sir, Due to the heavy traffic jam near theentrance to BS Mootha Girls’ Higher Second-ary School (Brindavan Street, WestMamabalam) during opening and closing time, the staff, students and parents have a toughtime entering and leaving the school.

More than 3000 students with their heavybags are put to hardship everyday. The narrowroad leading to the school gate is a public roadand remains jampacked with school buses, vans, autorickshaws, two-wheelers and otherprivate vehicles. Vehicles carrying school chil-dren are parked in a haphazard manner caus-ing hindrance to others.

There is no control as everyone is in a hurry.Students who walk or come by bicycles are putto risk as they have to manoeuver through thismaze of vehicles. A number of senior citizenswho come daily to drop their grandkids atschool are the worst affected.

The only solution to the problem is to makethe lane a vehicle-free zone during school open-ing and closing hours except for school buses.

I appeal to the Traffic Police to implementthe same immediately to ensure the safety ofthe students. V. Sowmya, NaickammarStreet, West Mambalam

Untold plight of workers inunorganized sector

Sir, I was touched by the article written byS. Vidyaakar and published in MambalamTimes last week about the misery of old menforced to take up odd jobs like that of watchmenfor a livelihood.

I myself have seen such watchmen in apart-ment complexes in my area. Similar is theplight of the thousands of persons of all ageswho come from all over India to find work in thecity and end up almost as slaves.

This undocumented work force plays a majorrole in boosting the economy but continues toremain at the lowest rung of the ladder. It is thediscontent and frustration that often forcesmany, primarily the youth, to indulge in crimi-nal activities. The government cannot remaina mute spectator to the situation and theLabour Dept. should act to ensure the safetyand rights of such oppressed workers.

I hope the government wakes up to thesituation to ensure the rights and safety of theworkforce in the unorganized sector. R.Lakshmi, Mahalaksmi Flats, WestMambalam

EB delay in responding to complaintsSir, There was power outage from 6.30 p.m

on June 28 till June 29 morning in severalhouses on 71st Street, 11th Sector, AshokNagar.

It took TNEB more than 15 hours to deputeits staff to attend to the problem in spite ofseveral complaints. The residents, which in-cluded a number of senior citizens, sufferedwithout power supply throughout the night.

I appeal to TNEB officials to act swiftly tocomplaints in the future. N. Ruba, 11th Sec-tor, 71st Street, K. K. Nagar.

Residents encroach pavementsSir, A number of residents of Brindavan

Street, West Mambalam have encroached onthe pavement by extending the ramp to theentrances of their houses with raised plat-forms. Will the authorities take action to breakand remove these ramps for the free move-ment of the pedestrians? Braman, 22,Royapettah High Road
