Hello, Tremont! My name is Amanda Bruns. I am excited to have this opportunity to work in such a vibrant and eclectic community this summer. I am currently studying Urban Planning at Cleveland State University, and will be graduating this Fall. My passion lies in neighborhood planning and securing an inclusive and

Hola, Tremont residents my name is Diana Hasrouni. For more than 20 years, my family and I have been residents in the Metro North section of Tremont. I am thrilled to be working with Tremont West Development Corporation this summer because it allows me to give back to the community that has shaped and enculturated me. Recently, I obtained my B.A in Urban and Regional Planning with minor in Sociology from Cleveland State University. My

Hello Tremont! My name is Valerie Lightner and I am thrilled to be serving this vibrant community as a VISTA with Tremont West Development Corporation. I grew up on the east side of Cleveland, returning to Cleveland in the summer of 2015 after graduating from Kenyon College with a degree in Anthropology. Last year, I served with City Year at John Adams High School in the Mount Pleasant/Corlett neighborhood where I focused on literacy initiatives with ninth grade students. I had a wonderful experience developing programs while immersed in a community, which has further inspired my interest in community development. After working with Tremont West Development Corporation this year, I will be attending Case Western Reserve University for dual Masters’ degrees in Social Work and Nonprofit Management. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, cooking new dishes, exploring farmers markets and flea markets, reading, and spending time with my dog, Athena. I am so excited to have a chance to work to create sustainable programs in Tremont that will contribute to its vibrancy!

passion has always been to work with socioeconomic disadvantaged families, community outreach, and gardening throughout the City of Cleveland. I have been privileged to have a father with a green thumb, who has taught me how to garden and take care of a variety of fruit trees. In my free time I enjoying hanging out my cousins and attending murder mystery shows, while wearing a costume. I look forward to obtaining hands-on experience of how a Community Development Corporation helps it residents enhance their community.

diverse housing stock for current and future residents. Tremont is going through a lot of changes at the moment, and I’m thrilled that I can be part of its growth. Though I’m not a native Clevelander, I have grown to love and appreciate this city as my home. Tremont has such a rich cultural and historical past, and I hope that its future will retain and enhance those elements, keeping it a distinct neighborhood. In my free time I enjoy going to brunch with my husband, visiting our amazing local breweries, restoring furniture, painting, and belting out a few songs at karaoke. I hope to see you at the Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays, at Taste of Tremont, or out and about in the neighborhood. Have a great summer, Tremont!

Thank You, Jocelynn Clemings, and Best Wishes

on Your New Position! Jocelynn Clemings has been the Public Information Officer for the Innerbelt Corridor/Ohio Department of Transportation. Most recently, Kai got to work with the community on an issue that arose with RTA proposing to cut access to Tremont Pointe on our Route #81. Best wishes to you, Kai, in your future endeavors, and thank you for your year of service in Tremont!!!

What a wonderful feeling to be back in the Tremont neighborhood. It almost seems like I never left. I am very excited to be once again working for Tremont West as their Office Manager. Tremont is such a renaissance neighborhood and their residents truly care about

what happens in their community. My non-profit career began in Tremont and I went on to other non-profits working for the Cleveland Neighborhood Development Coalition and Cleveland Neighborhood Progress. But my heart was always in Tremont. It is great to see that the Tremont Arts & Cultural Festival, Arts in August, Taste of Tremont and Tremont Trek are still such great neighborhood events and have grown bigger and better every year and attract thousands of people. But there are many new programs that really compliment the neighborhood, such as the Healthy Store Initiative and the Tremont Farmers Market; two excellent choices when looking for fresh food. I am very anxious to participate in these events and once again be part of the Tremont family. I look forward to catching up with old friends and meeting new residents that now call Tremont home. If you see me walking around the neighborhood please say hello or stop by the office, I would be most happy to meet with you.

Final Steel Pieces Go Up Over Abbey Avenue: On June 17 crews set the first steel girder over T r e m o n t ’ s A b b e y Avenue. In late June, the final steel girder went up over Abbey m a r k i n g a huge achievement for the George V. Voinovich Bridge project! The occasion was marked by a “Topping Out” ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of those who have worked so hard to build this monument to engineering. “This is a huge milestone for the project team,” said Ohio Department of Transportation Project Manager for Construction, Tom Hyland. “We are on schedule for a late summer/early fall opening, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the work of the men and women on this project.” In addition to completion of the structural steel, crews continue to form the rebar bridge deck and pour the concrete driving surface. Stay tuned for details on the opening!Bridge Namesake George V. Voinovich Laid to Rest Former Cleveland mayor, Ohio governor and U.S. senator George V. Voinovich passed away early Sunday, June 12. He was 79 years old. In remembrance of his service to the great state of Ohio and the Cleveland region, the aesthetic lighting on the GVV Bridge went dark during the week following his death. Hundreds gathered on Friday, June 17 as he was laid to rest and to remember a man who

Matt Talbot Inn at Landmarks Commission

The Matt Talbot Inn located at 2270 Professor Avenue is being nominated as a City Landmark. The public hearing will be scheduled for one of the August Commission meetings, Aug. 11 or Aug. 25. Known most recently as the Matt Talbot Inn, the building was built in 1909 as a parish house for St. John Cantius Church and served as a convent for the Sisters of St. Joseph. The architect was William Jansen who also designed the school next door. The convent was nominated as a Cleveland Landmark on July 23, 2015. Please look to next month’s issue of Inside Tremont for more details about the meeting at the Landmarks Commission to be held in August.

RTA Service Update Loops to Lakeview Terrace and West 7th/Starkweather will be discontinued except from 7 AM -6 PM on weekdays, and fares increases will go into effect August 14th of this year. This vote of modified service and fare increases took place at RTA’s June Board Meeting on June 7th. Please visit http://www.riderta.com/news/aug-14-2016-these-service-changes-take-effect-balance-budget for more detailed information about the fare increases and route cuts. To get to this amendment of service was no easy task and the journey is still not over, so please continue to support and join the Clevelanders for Public Transit in advocacy regarding transit. Contact Nathan Malachowski at nathanm@ohorganizingorg if you would like to become more involved in this work. Also, be sure to follow Clevelanders for Public Transit on Facebook and Twitter for news and updates!

Tremont History Project The following article was in the recent Currents publication, Volume 31, Issue 11June 16, 2016 - we thought you’d enjoy reading it. We give it to you in its entirety.

Convergence-Continuum always surprises with new plays By Art Thomas No matter how many times you visit Convergence-Continuum, the intimate gem of a theater in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood you will be surprised at what you see. Each production accommodates an audience of 40-45 but the seating is usually environmental with small groups of seats in multiple locations amid the set. And that’s before the play begins. The theater is committed to producing plays by living playwrights, and most of the plays are Ohio premieres. Artistic Director Clyde Simon explains. “We have a season with a theme. This year, the theme is ‘Domestic Dynamite/Family Fallout.’ As you might imagine, the subject matter is explosive.” Last month, the theater produced “Bootycandy,” an un-politically-correct satire of a man who, over forty years, travels from a family home through his church, and dive bars into a nursing home. Starting May 20, Convergence-Continuum presents “Three Tall Women.” It’s Edward Albee’s story of a 93-year old woman’s reflections on her family, now departed or estranged, and how they shaped her life and identity. Simon usually includes one American Classic play each year. The authors tend to be playwrights such as Sam Shepard or Edward Albee rather than more realistic, popular writers. Almost everything about Convergence-Continuum is unusual. “The name,” Simon says, “does not include the words ‘theater company’ because everyone does that. ‘Convergence’ is what happens in a collaborative enterprise such as a theater. After the play is shared with the audience, we all go on with our lives, and that is the ‘continuum’ part. The theater’s building on Scranton Road is call “The Liminus.” This comes from a Latin word meaning “threshold.” We cross the threshold when we enter the theater and are in the new environment. As a policy, the theater never has any sort of preshow announcements to spoil that effect. Simon acquired the building at the turn of the century. What is now the theater was a bar facing Scranton. “I moved into an apartment behind the theater,” he says. “When the actors go backstage, they are actually in my living room. I’ve lived backstage for fifteen years.” Simon started with a partner, Brian Breth. They met as students of theater at Kent State University. At the time, Kent did not let undergraduates direct plays because they were too expensive. Simon and Breth produced a fringe festival at Kent where 22 productions happened in 15 venues over one week. That partnership led to the origins of Convergence-Continuum. In the 1990s, Simon identified Tremont as a rising Cleveland neighborhood with not only concentrations of arts-conscious residents, also a growing number of varied restaurants. Breth has since moved to California and Simon manages just about everything at the theater from planning and promoting the season to cleaning leaves from the gutters on the building. “We are committed to low ticket prices, which are competitive with seeing a movie. Adults are $15, seniors $12, and students $10. We have a number of subscribers for our season of six plays, which run for four weeks each. Three of our subscribers have ‘perfect attendance’ and have not missed a play in 15 years. Two of them are a couple who live in Sandusky.” The theater produces six additional plays, which run for one week only. The “tweeners” come between the longer running shows. To learn more about the upcoming productions, visit convergence-continuum.org,or call the box office at 216-687-0074. Don’t be surprised if Clyde Simon answers the box office phone. It’s in his living room.

built bridges. Additional Work in Other Tremont Areas: Work including landscaping and painting continues in other areas of the Tremont neighborhood. In addition, paving of the new “Sideyard” parking lot will take place soon! Remember: Getting to Tremont is still easy using the new Abbey loop ramp. However, the West 14th Street entrance ramp to I-90 east is closed until the second bridge is complete in late 2016. Please keep in mind this is an active construction zone and stay safely away. For more info on the project, visit www.Innerbelt.org.In This Photo: On June 17 crews erected the first girder over Tremont’s Abbey Avenue, signaling a huge milestone for the GVV Bridge project – and signaling the end of the project is drawing near. Steel erection is now complete and crews now work to complete the concrete bridge deck before a later summer/ early fall opening!

Support Our Community Gardens! Many Tremont residents and visitors alike seem unaware that we have not only 1 community garden, but 4 servicing our neighborhood! Please join me in supporting and joining (if possible) one of 4 community gardens in Tremont that not only spur food access in our area, but also builds stronger partnerships between people. Not to mention supports greenspace enhancement and retention! Grai Oleksy (pictured below), Holmden Garden leader (1093 Holmden Ave), has been working incredibly hard to further enhance an area of Tremont experiencing immense adversity through greenspace enhancement. As stated by him, “my work on the garden is heavily focused on native plants that support pollinators, creating plant communities that cut down management needs but build on wildlife habitat, biodiversity of plants and insects, and tasty organic food. With that particular section of Tremont likely to change within the next decade, I want my legacy at the garden to be its sustainable existence, beautification, and production capability. Right now, I feel that the biggest barrier between the neighborhood and the garden is people do not feel safe going there. That will surely change as the neighborhood changes. I know the city has big plans for that area. I know they want to see urban development that increases property value. I see that much of the focus in Tremont is on urban density. Well, we need some green space too. It provides needed value for the neighborhood, and a large green space has more value than a bunch of small spaces that add up to the same size. That is what makes the garden so special. It is literally a wildlife magnet. I cannot argue enough that we need that”. Please show up to support Grai on August 6th as he provides garden tours for participants of the annual American Community Garden Conference taking place for the 1st time in Cleveland on August 4th-7th at Cleveland State University (2121 Euclid Ave). Let’s support one of our own in this incredible undertaking! Please stay tuned for more details regarding the event.

Painting in the Park Family Fun Day Festival On Saturday, July 9, 2016, Furaha Forever Productions will host their 2nd Annual Painting in the Park Family Fun Day Festival in Lincoln Park-Tremont from 12 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Come experience an afternoon of fun with family and friends! There will be live painting presentations, various creative art activities for children, teens and adults, food vendors and more. For more information, contact the Coordinator at 216-202-0784.

Grai, along with Dan Leamon of the Seeds of Love Garden (2914 W. 14th St.), Rick Warren of Duck Island Community Garden (Location Subject to Change), and Kayla Williams and Nathan Hubbell-Staeble of SoTre Garden (Corner of Scranton Rd. & Brainard Ave.) are working to continue to build capacity for these projects in our community. Auburn-Lincoln ParkBlock Club members gathered at the parlor of Pilgrim Church on June 20th. Special guests included Matt Moss, Housing & Economic Development Director of Tremont West, and Cal Verga, owner of the new Duck-Rabbit Coffee on Columbus Road. Both guests provided a brief introduction and overview and welcomed our questions. The safety update from Sgt. Frank Woyma included an update on crime trends and the safety forces preparation for the RNC. Members were reminded to check the Safety Page of Tremont West’s web site or the Auburn Block Club Facebook page www.Facebook.com/auburnblock club to keep updated on safety concerns and to “turn lights on”, “put your junk in you trunk”, “don’t keep a quarter in your cup” to discourage would-be criminals. Old Business included a discussion of the status of the rezoning request from the owners of 1205 Starkweather (AKA Theater Bldg./American Legion Post). A Good Neighbor “Cooperation Agreement” has not been sent to the block club. No further information on the status of the rezoning request was available. The property owners were invited to attend the June meeting but did not request to be on the agenda. Discussion occurred about the status of possible replacement strategies for the Lincoln Park Gazebo, which presently is in poor condition. Quotes and designs are being solicited. Block club members interested in helping with this project will be invited to another meeting. The desired projected completion date is April, 2017. Members were invited to the weekly Farmers’ Market in Lincoln Park every Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and the Lincoln Park Tile Mural Dedication on June 21st. The block club’s members will host their summer clean-up of Lincoln Park on Monday, July 25th at 6:00 pm to be followed by a BBQ. Details will be sent via U.S. mail and e-mail. Proposed cuts to RTA service on the W. 7th Street loop (by Tremont Pointe) were reported to offer only Monday – Friday service from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Volunteers are being solicited by the Tremont Trash Patrol prior to the RNC on July 14th, 15th and 16th. Margy Judd is the contact person and has equipment for volunteers. She will post available dates/times for volunteering on the Auburn-Lincoln Park Facebook page. Scranton-Carter Construction will continue through October 2016. Expect intermittent closures. Upcoming events are listed in the “Inside Tremont” monthly newspaper and on the TWDC website at www.tremontwest.org. A listing of upcoming summer and fall events was distributed. Our next gathering is the Summer Clean-Up event scheduled for Monday, July 25th at 6:00 pm in Lincoln Park (note date change from regularly scheduled 3rd Monday of the month). Please join us!

Central TremontCentral Tremont’s June meeting had a packed agenda. Neighbors met on June 6th at the Spotted Owl and started the meeting off with an introduction to Danny Rizk, the owner of Beviamo, the smoothie shop/café that recently opened in Tremont. Danny spoke about his business and graciously provided free samples for members. The store is located at 720 Literary Road. For more information and hours, visit www.beviamocafe.com. Be sure to stop in soon! John McDonnell, the owner of Merchant Street Provisions and Eatery, also joined us to detail his plans for his business. When fully complete, Merchant Street will be located at the former Ligali’s Bistro space near Lincoln Park. It will be a 50 seat bistro adjoining a gourmet foods market. He’s been renovating the interior of the property, but the deli is now open and carries primarily imported foods from Italy. He also kindly brought samples for members to try. Previous generations of John’s family have owned businesses in the neighborhood, and he wanted to return to Tremont. The restaurant will serve lunch and dinner, and hopes to eventually open up brunch hours. Their website will be active soon. You can visit it at www.merchantstreettremont.com. Ron and Jackie Adkins, who have operated Studio LeBeau in Tremont for 8 years, also joined us. The salon recently moved to a new location at 2688 W. 14th Street. Studio LeBeau offers a variety of salon services focusing on cuts and colors. For more details on pricing and hours, please visit www.lebeautremont.com. Kyle Davis presented zoning variances for the new Visible Voice/Crust location on Professor Avenue. The proposal to change the use of property from a funeral home to a restaurant/bookstore was put before the City’s Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) and two issues of nonconformance were raised: 1) the new use would require 27 off-street parking spaces. The business currently has 11 parking spaces and plans to work out a deal with an adjacent property owner or work with the TWDC Valet program to identify the necessary spaces. 2). The business would keep the existing 4-foot wide landscape strip and not expand it to a 6-foot strip per the zoning requirement. The block club voted and approved to provide a letter of support for the landscape strips variance and encourage the business to work to pursue the options listed above to meet the parking requirement necessary for compliance. Finally, Matt Moss, Tremont West’s new Housing and Economic Development Director, was introduced. Matt shared his background and detailed several of the development projects in the pipeline in Tremont that will eventually bring 100+ additional housing units to the neighborhood. He’s also been contacted by a number of companies who are looking for commercial space in the hopes of locating their businesses in Tremont. He hopes that some of these companies can be located in the former Ohio Awning Company building on Scranton, once that development is complete. Other topics covered included the Constantino’s Market on W. 14th St., and Matt shared that the grocery store, which will open by early fall of 2017, was looking for a general letter of support from the block club. A vote was taken and the block club agreed to write a letter of support. Due to the July 4th Holiday, Central Tremont will not be meeting in the month of July. Please join us for our summer Block Club Party on Monday, August 1st at a TBD location. Keep an eye out for additional postcards and emails with further details on the summer party. For more information on the block club and its activities, please contact Co-Chairs Lynne Nowel ([email protected]) or Julie Goulis ([email protected]). Or call Community Organizer Lindsay Smetana at 216.575.0920 x 102. You can also learn more by visiting our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CentralTremont. Enjoy your 4th of July and we’ll see you in August!

Duck IslandThe Duck Island Block Club met at St. Wendelin Parish rectory on Tuesday, June 7th, and was called to order at 6:30pm by Co-Chair, Tyree Thompson. Our safety concerns were then addressed with a friendly reminder of the importance of our Community Crime Watch page, especially as summer approaches and outside activities prevail. The Second District Community Services Unit officer, Sgt. Frank Woyma, also re-enforced the Unit’s presence in our community by addressing any specific concerns and reminding us of its participation in the upcoming Tremont Safety Festival later this month. Special Guests, Craig and Gloria Gates & architect Mike Caito returned for a 2nd presentation of a proposal for a single family home at 1644 Lorain – the Lorain extension. A somewhat spirited discussion occurred between longtime Duck Island residents in that area, those who questioned community commitment to retaining skyline views and green space, in contrast to these proposed housing projects. The block club voted to approve a letter of support for the Gates project to the Board of Zoning Appeals, with 12 voting members in favor, 2 opposed, and 1 abstaining. Westleigh Harper of Harper Horton Architects presented a single family home proposed for 1684 Lorain, on what is known to the community as Overlook Hill, & 7 single

family homes proposed for W. 20th south of Freeman (5 are market rate, 2 are more affordable unites at 120AMI). This first presentation provided site plans and areas which needed Board of Zoning Approval. Members were encouraged to take the time to review these requests. A vote on support is requested for the July meeting. Mike Horton took a few minutes to update his West 20th St plans in addition to answering a few questions. Our neighborhood mural was completed during the month of May. Many thanks to Cami Ross for her leadership on the mural project and to artist, Jill Lemieux, and thanks as well to all the neighborhood residents - adults and children - who assisted in painting. Both Brian Hannon and Rick Warren were given the opportunity for updates on the historic Right of Way to Abbey Avenue Resolution and our Duck Island Community garden, respectively. There were several concerns and comments regarding the official parade route for protest march during the Republican National Convention (RNC). Congestion and crowd control topped the list of issues of concern. Ward 3 Councilman Kerry McCormack is sponsoring a Public Meeting on the RNC and Its Impact on Residents on June 27th at St. Wendelin Parish. Safety and Police department representatives and members of the Mayor’s administration were also to be in attendance. We were then reminded of some important upcoming events that affect the neighborhood, such as the return of the Tremont Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays along with the Tremont Flea Table for their season this summer. Also the dedication and celebration of our community Artist in Residence (AIR) Mural Project will take place in Lincoln Park in June as well. The Safety Festival at Lincoln Park will also take place on June 28th. For more information about block club meetings and activities please contact our Co-Chairs: Tyree Thompson- [email protected] and Cami Ross- [email protected]. As always, Scott Rosenstein at TWDC, 216-575-0920 ext [email protected] is available for questions and comments too. Please “like” us on Facebook – and please join us at our next business meeting, Tuesday, July 5th, 6:30pm at the St. Wendelin Parish rectory.

Lincoln HeightsThe Lincoln Heights Block Club held its June meeting on Monday, June 13th at the Tremont Tap House. Josh Rosen presented a preliminary site plan for a proposed third parking lot for his Ohio Awning project, which is to be located on Barber Avenue. This proposed plan allows for 27 parking spaces, significantly more than would have been provided by the previously proposed lot on West 18th. He anticipated that the majority of users would be employees in the commercial spaces of the building, but could potentially be used by some residents as well. He is considering a natural barrier to the property adjacent to the West or a six-foot iron fence. Jocelyn Clemings from ODOT provided us with some updates regarding the recent repaving of both Starkweather and Kenilworth under the I-90 overpasses, the clearing of brush in the area of West 25th Street and Wade Avenue, and the closure of Abby at the end of that week for steel deliveries. Concerns about some dying trees which had been planted by ODOT on Allman Court were addressed. Once the replacement period expires she will look into having new trees planted. She was asked by the membership to entertain the option of resurfacing Scranton Road, which has suffered significant damage after being used by contractors and as a detour route into downtown by commuters. Henry Senyak provided the block club with code enforcement updates. If anyone has recently received code enforcement letters from TWDC, be advised that we coordinate with Tremont West to rectify any issues in the 30-day timeframe allotted before City inspectors become involved. Several habitual offenders are already in housing court. There has also been some talk of the sale of the Pizza Pan building, but nothing official is known yet. Recently it was discovered that there is a company working out of the former Walsh Construction building called Fortaleza Treatment Centers. They are alleged to be a drug treatment referral facility. The city has been asked to look into whether they are operating within the zoning laws. Jaime Declet invited us to attend a meeting with the architects involved in the library renovation in late June. Chris Leib has also invited us to attend the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Big Wheel Relay on Saturday, June 25th. The after party will be hosted by the Tap House. We have also begun planning our annual Block Club Summer Picnic. We are still deciding on a location, but the date is set for August 6, 2016. Be sure to join us at our July meeting on July 11, 2016, 6:00 pm, location TBD. Keep an eye out for postcards and flyers with more details about the agenda and our annual summer picnic. For more information on upcoming meetings, minutes and other block club activities visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/groups/LHBlockClub/, or email Chairperson Henry Senyak at [email protected]. You can also call Community Organizer Lindsay Smetana at Tremont West at (216) 575.0920 x 102. As always, we look forward to seeing our neighbors at next month’s meeting!

Mentor Castle Clark/ Holmden Buhrer RowleyHBR-MCC held our meeting on Wednesday the 1st of June at Zion Church. We began the meeting at 6:30pm with introductions from our members, guests, and Block Club Chair Bev Wurm. We had two guests attend our meeting. Our first guest was Jennifer Braman, Manager of Urban Forestry at the City of Cleveland. Jennifer helped us better understand the procedures around planting trees and how to handle issues with existing trees on both public and private properties. Overall, Jennifer’s purpose was to discuss the Cleveland Tree Plan. The tree plan is a roadmap to help the city get through the next decade of reforestation. For general information you can call the city of Cleveland at (216) 664-2000. Next, we heard from Sgt. Frank Woyma, who gave us a general overview of the recent activity that has taken place in our neighborhood. At the time, there was minimal activity to report, besides several curfew details. Sgt. Woyma also gave the block club some insight into how they are ramping up for the Republican National Convention. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 6th at 6:30pm at Zion Church (2716 West 14th St, park in rear). If you have questions or would like more information on the block club and its activities, please contact Co-Chairs, Joel Reynolds ([email protected]), Beverly Wurm ([email protected]), or Secretary Sean Heney ([email protected]), or contact Lindsay at Tremont West (216.575.0920 x 102 or [email protected]). Information is also available at our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/HBR-MCC.

Metro NorthAt our late May meeting we welcomed a special guest, Kate Carden, Assistant Director of Community Resource Center of the Cleveland Housing Network. Kate works with individuals to manage and grow personal finances, enhance employment skills, and prepare families to purchase, manage and build equity in their homes. The Community Resource Center also manages CHN’s free tax preparation services and Foreclosure Prevention assistance. We also received Safety updates from Sgt. Frank Woyma of the Second District Police’s Community Services Unit. The officer encouraged us to report any unusual activity in advance of and during the Republican National Convention (RNC) being held downtown July 18th – 21st. There was an update on the Scranton Road Reconstruction project (Fairfield to Columbus Road). The improvements planned include new concrete pavement for both roadways, new driveways, new sidewalks, water line upgrades, new drainage infrastructure

and green stormwater solutions to address water quality. There were also updates of the Tremont West Annual meeting (including which candidates were elected) as well as updates on the RiverSweep Clean-up, RTA bus service (proposed service cut back on the W. 7th Street loop of the #81 bus to Monday-Friday, 7am-6pm), and Tremont Gardeners’ Flower Sale. We also looked ahead to upcoming summer and fall events. Members were encouraged to attend the Dedication Ceremony & Festivities for the Lincoln Park Mural project with Tremont artist, Angelica Pozo, in Lincoln Park, which was held on June 21st, and to participate in the Tremont Safety Fest, also held in Lincoln Park on June 28th. Jaime Declet, Librarian at South Branch and Jefferson Libraries, gave a brief update on the South Branch Library renovation. Check out the weekly Tremont Farmers’ Market, which is held in Lincoln Park each Tuesday through early October from 4-7pm. The June 28th meeting was cancelled (special guest, Joe Chura of the Tremont Economic Development Committee, was rescheduled for the late August meeting), and members were eager to attend the Tremont Safety Fest on June 28th. Also on the schedule was an interactive design meeting on library renovation with the architects of the South Branch Library project, scheduled for June 29th. Our Summer Potluck Party is coming up on Tuesday, July 26th. Please bring a dish to share. Burgers and hotdogs will be provided. Watch for more details by postcard and e-mail. For more information on our block club, check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Metro-North-Block-Club, or contact Chair, Sue Krosel—or Scott at Tremont West—[email protected] or 216.575.0920 ext.106. Please join us for our summer potluck gathering on Tuesday, July 26th, 6:30pm, at the ground floor meeting room of St. Michael Church.

North of LiteraryThe North of Literary (NOL) Block Club’s most recent meeting was June 21 at Press Wine Bar, with the meeting opened by Co-chairs Mike Williams and Sam Vozar. The block club congratulated newly elected Tremont West Development Corporation (TWDC) Board members Dan Cotter and Vic Selig. ADA Architects presented their list of zoning variances for the Constantino’s Grocery Store planned for W. 14th St. The only variances that will not be fully addressed relate to parking. Constantino’s feels that these will be OK based on the relative size of Constantino’s, the anticipated quick turn-around of shoppers, and their experience at other locations. The Tremont location will have more parking spaces than any other Constantino’s locations. The Block Club passed a motion expressing excitement to have a grocery store in the neighborhood, and supporting the variances. Sgt. Frank Woyma of the Second District Cleveland Police provided a safety update and told the club what to expect with the Republican Convention. Destination Cleveland presented plans for a script Cleveland sign installation at the Abby Ave. overlook. The sign will be a great photo opportunity, and residents and visitors will be encouraged to interact with the sign. The block club passed a motion of support for the sign installation, feeling that it’s a great addition to the neighborhood. Matt Moss of TWDC presented information on the new apartment building proposed for the corner of W. 11th and Fairfield Ave. Members reviewed the current design as well as alternate concepts. The membership strongly requested changes to the current design to improve the aesthetic and reduce the perceived flatness and harshness of the design. In addition, they requested landscaping or plantings between the building and sidewalk to preserve green space. The club also discussed road conditions (need for paving). The club will prioritize individual streets at the next meeting to pass on to Ward 3 Councilman Kerry McCormack. Sam Vozar described the upcoming Safety Fair on Tuesday, June 28 and encouraged members to attend. For more information on our block club and activities, please check out our Facebook page, or contact Co-Chairs, Sam Vozar – [email protected] - and Mike Williams’s [email protected] – or Community Outreach Manager, Scott Rosenstein, at Tremont West at 216-575-0920 x106 – [email protected]. Please join us for our next gathering, Tuesday, July 19th at 6:30 pm. We look forward to seeing you!

South of JeffersonThe June meeting of the South of Jefferson block club was held at the Roosevelt Post 58 upstairs meeting room. Special guest, Matt Moss, Housing and Economic Development Director of Tremont West, introduced himself and explained his role within the Tremont West organization. One of his duties will be to coordinate a “special improvement district.” This district allows property owners to fund special programs above and beyond what the City offers. Examples could be extra lighting or security programs - a pilot project is currently under consideration for a few blocks on Professor Avenue. Business owners and residents would need a super majority vote to create such a district. The specific geographic area businesses and homeowners would be assessed a “tax” to cover whatever special improvement was approved by the property owners. Currently, there are no projects scheduled for the SOJ area but Matt is asking for any recommendations. Mike Koski updated the SOJ block club on the Safety and Court Watch concerns of the area - no major problems to report to date. The Tremont Safety Fest will be held on June 28th at Lincoln Park. The Home Safety Audit Rebate Program will also be starting up again. This program offers a police officer to come to your home to check windows, doors, lighting, and the overall general safety of your home. If any recommendations are found, the homeowner is able to receive up to a $100 rebate to purchase the recommended safety improvement items. The SOJ block club was informed that there will be another meeting in late June regarding the RTA. The RTA is planning on keeping the stop at W 7th with bus hours from 7 am to 6 pm, weekdays only. The rate hike is most likely to happen although it was pointed out that this new rate is in line with other cities in our state. Thanks were given to all that participated in the Lucky Park clean-up on May 25th. It was suggested that our club provide a monthly maintenance of this park. Randi Zubin will be sending out an email with the date and time of the next clean-up in the park. The Taste of Tremont is scheduled for Sunday, July 10th from 12 pm to 8 pm along Professor Avenue. If anyone would like to volunteer for this event, it was suggested to sign up through Volunteer Spot. This website provides information and volunteer opportunities. Co-Chair Greg Kobe was pleased to announce that the Mural Project in Lincoln Park has been completed. The dedication festivities were held on June 21st. Co-Chair Debbie Smith volunteered her residence to host our Summer Party in August. Details about this event will be coming soon. Similar to last year’s party, the SOJ club would like to collect school supplies at the party which will then be given to a local school. A public meeting regarding the Republican National Convention (RNC) and Its Impact on Residents, sponsored by Ward 3 Councilman Kerry McCormack, was held on June 27th at St. Wendelin Parish on Columbus Road for residents and business-owners in Duck Island and Tremont. A public meeting with the architects on the design for the South Branch Library renovation was also held on June 29th. Suggestions for meeting locations for SOJ block club’s July and August meetings should be directed to Co-Chairs, Greg and Debbie. A social time at Post 58 followed the meeting. Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, July 12th, 7pm. Location TBA. Watch for details by postcard and e-mail!

Tremont Arts & Cultural Festival The 18th annual Festival is returning to Lincoln Park on Saturday & Sunday, September 17th – 18th, 2016.
