BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT

On behalf of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad’s dedicated Board members and staff, it is our pleasure to share our 2016-2017 Annual Report . As you thumb through these pages, we hope you get a better feel for our mission as well as our legacy of service .

What gives us a tremendous sense of pride is the fact that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad has become a vital part of our community’s social safety net . We are proud that more than 85,000 youngsters have walked through our doors over the past 64 years . We are proud of the huge impact that the Club has had on so many young lives . We are proud that no child or family is turned away due to inability to pay .

Our buildings may look like bricks and mortar from the outside, but inside our walls lives are changed on a daily basis . Our Clubhouses are filled with stories of success, and it is humbling to witness the impact Club membership has had on so many youngsters . The fact that we’ve received Charity Navigator’s highest rating—4 stars—gives our supporters the confidence to know that their hard-earned dollars are being used efficiently and responsibly .

Did you know that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is nearly 100% funded by private and local donors? We are extremely grateful to our donors and volunteers; they are true investors in our mission and are responsible for turning our vision into reality .

A number of noteworthy events occurred over the past year, but perhaps the one we are most proud of is the fact that we gave a whopping $490,000 in financial assistance (despite our extremely low fees) – an increase of nearly 20% over last year . We’ve also stepped up to the challenge of finding new ways to serve our community’s teens—a high-risk group—and have experienced solid growth in teen members via our programming at both Carlsbad and Sage Creek High Schools .

It is our objective to lead and uphold the tremendous values that are the hallmark of a Boys & Girls Club . We invite you to find out more by reviewing this Annual Report, visiting our website (www .bgccarlsbad .org), and stopping by one of our Clubhouses for your very own personal tour .

None of our accomplishments would be possible without the significant support of caring individuals, organizations, and businesses who believe in us . GREAT FUTURES START HERE . . .at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad!

Sincerely,

Brad Holland Travis VanTreeseCEO Board President

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT

ABOUT BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS

WHAT IS A BOYS & GIRLS CLUB?

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad is to inspire our community’s young people to BE GREAT by offering educational, enriching, and fun experiences in a safe environment .

Our guiding values drive everything we do; we believe in safety, respect, leadership, teamwork, inclusion, and FUN! Our Clubhouses provide youngsters with a safe location for exploration and transformative experiences . Each child is given the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential in inspiring and engaging ways .

We offer youth a place to call their own, and have an open-door policy . With an annual membership fee of only $50 per year, no child is ever turned away due to inability to pay .

WHAT MAKES A BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS UNIQUE?

Members are given the freedom to make their own choices of what activities they’d like to participate in, gaining independence and self-confidence in the process .

Part-time, trained youth development professionals provide positive role models and mentorship . Volunteers provide key supplementary support .

The Club has an open-door policy, and is available every day after school and most school holidays when kids have free time and need positive, productive outlets .

The Club is facilities-based – an actual neighborhood building designed solely for youth programs and activities – and satisfies the age-old desire for kids to have a place to truly call their own .

WHAT PROGRAMS DOES A BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OFFER?

Designed to help young people gain a sense of self-perspective, Club programs specifically foster positive attitudes and behaviors . Our five core program areas include:

Character and Leadership Development Education and Career Development Health and Life Skills The Arts Sports, Fitness and Recreation

Our Clubhouse Directors are given the freedom to tailor specific programs within each of the above core areas based on member interest, time of year, and available resources .

A HOME AWAY FROM HOME

History and Overview

Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad has served nearly 85,000 youth since it opened its doors in 1952 as the Carlsbad Boys Club . At first, the Club functioned mostly as a recreational site where young boys found a safe, fun-filled, nurturing environment . It served as a “home-away-from-home” for many single-parent working families .

In 1992, the Club officially changed its name to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, following the lead of the national organization to include females in its daily programming . Today, the Club emphasizes teaching positive life skills, provides educational enhancement, as well as a full spectrum of arts, recreation, and leadership development opportunities .

Over the past 64 years, the Club’s original location on Roosevelt Street in the Village of Carlsbad has been renovated five times . The most recent renovation, completed in 1999, marked the most dramatic changes in the Club with the addition of a dedicated technology center, covered swimming pool, gymnasium, and teen center . A second facility, housed in a mobile unit, was established in 1982 in La Costa to serve the southern sector of the city . In February 2012, the new state-of-the-art Bressi Ranch Clubhouse was opened in its entirety to replace the tiny La Costa branch . In 2015, teen programs were established at both Carlsbad and Sage Creek High Schools, extending the Club’s outreach and impact on this critical age group .

What Our Members Have to Say

The Club instills a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness, and influence, and we are proud of our rich heritage in the Carlsbad community . Here’s what some of our members and their families have to say about their Club experience .

“At a time and in a world that is riddled with challenges, kids find strength under your roof and are given the opportunity to learn valuable life lessons. They are encouraged to not only make good choices, but understand the process. More than words can ever convey, Jackson and I are deeply grateful to the Club and everyone connected to it. What you all do matters; you change lives in a profound and positive way!” Buck (Son is a Bressi Ranch Clubhouse Member)

“Thanks to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, my daughters have become social, extroverted, confident young girls who are positive role models. The Club impacted my family’s life by establishing stability and providing a safe and positive environment for my daughters to develop and grow in. Their lives have been enhanced in so many ways; I am so grateful. The Club has truly been a blessing to my family.” Ruben (Daughters are Village Clubhouse Members)

“If it weren’t for the Boys & Girls Club, I’d be alone every day after school. Instead I’m at a place that makes me feel special. Everyone is so nice, and I have people I can look up to and lots of friends. The Club is my second home.” Sophia (Bressi Ranch Clubhouse Member)

The buildings we call “Clubhouses” are truly vibrant communities for our children – safe places of hope and opportunity .

Boys & Girls Clubs of America alumni report that Clubs continue to have both an immediate and long-lasting impact on their lives . In fact, 57% of alumni said the Club saved their life .

These testimonials are living proof that Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad impact young lives every day . The Club instills a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness, and influence, and we are proud of our rich heritage in the Carlsbad community .

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT

THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB NATIONAL MOVEMENT

The Boys & Girls Club movement encompasses more than 1,100 independent organizations and the national organization, Boys & Girls Clubs of America . Local organizations serve young people and communities through some 4,300 Club locations . While Boys & Girls Clubs of America serves its local organizations, it does not manage the operations of individual Clubs, which are governed locally .

Among many highlights of the past year, national critical outcomes focused on three key areas: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles . Inherent in these strategic initiatives is the belief that every child – no matter how challenging their life circumstances – deserves opportunity for success . When young people enter the doors of a Club, they start down the path toward their own great futures .

National Movement Profile*

56% of Club members qualify for free or reduced-price school lunches On a typical day, 433,000 children and teens enter the doors of a Boys & Girls Club 364,000 adult staff and volunteers 61,000 adult professional staff 279,000 volunteers 24,000 board members In its 2016 Philanthropy 400 report, The Chronicle of Philanthropy ranked BGCA #1 among youth

organizations

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF CARLSBAD 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT

YOUTH OF THE YEAR 7personal best . She is an enthusiastic participant in a myriad of community service projects, but her favorite is being a “Lancer Buddy” for elementary-age kids . Sarah feels one of the biggest issues youngsters face today is bullying, and she is determined to teach and show compassion . Eclectic, friendly, and considerate, Sarah established instant rapport and relationships with Club members and staff alike . She is one of the Club’s biggest spokespersons, and recently “starred” in a video about her Club experience .

Maria De La Mora2016 Youth of the Year FinalistThe Boys & Girls Club has been a huge part of Maria’s life . Six years ago, she moved here from Orange County and didn’t know a soul . In addition, her parents were going through a divorce . Not an easy transition for a 10 year-old . But she quickly made new friends, and relied on the Club’s staff to guide her . Although she tends to be somewhat shy, Maria never hesitates to get out of her comfort zone to help others . Responsible, helpful, and determined, Maria is committed to higher education where she hopes to major in psychology and dance . She is an amazing role model to her two younger sisters, and we can’t wait to see where she lands .

Brian Pantoja2016 Youth of the Year FinalistThe Club has been a part of Brian’s life since he was 7 years old, and he credits the Club with guiding him through school and life’s trials . He has been a member at both the Village and Bressi Ranch Clubhouses, and luckily the Armory at Carlsbad High School was opened just at the time Brian needed it the most—when his parents were getting divorced and unable to be there when his school day was over . The Armory provided him with a safe after school environment, enabled him to get tutoring for classes he was struggling in, and ultimately the motivation he so desperately needed to live up to his potential . He is passionate about helping others, and has spent countless hours performing community service . His goal is to study computer science in college, conquer cyber bullying, and give back to the community .

Carl Petrovski2015 Youth of the Year FinalistCarl credits the Club for having a major and positive impact on his life . In the three years that he’s been a member, he’s become comfortable as a leader, grown self-confident, and improved his grades twofold . Deeply affected by his parents’ divorce, Carl found himself withdrawing from the world as a result . Becoming a Club member gave him the opportunity to come out of his shell, make new friends, and learn how to deal with family issues . Carl feels there are many kids who feel alienated and alone, and so he makes it a point to reach out to others and share a laugh . He is now an excellent student who takes advanced science and math classes at Carlsbad High, and hopes to attend the University of Hawaii (he loves to surf!) and study electrical engineering .

Our Youth of the Year applicants are screened and judged on leadership qualities as well as exemplary character, academic achievement, and service to Boys & Girls Clubs and their community . Thanks to the generosity of Julie and Matt Harelson, a $10,000 college scholarship is provided to our Youth of the Year winner . Scholarships for the other finalists are provided courtesy of Keith Blackburn .

Previous Youth of the Year winners include:2015 Vanessa Perez 2006 Aurora Jimenez2014 Vanessa Garcia 2005 Toni Brown2013 Jonathan Miller 2004 Melissa Uribe2012 Julianna Garner 2003 Tyson Garcia2011 Gerald Ball 2002 Breanna Racheck2010 Cierra Halstead 2001 Trevor Ball2009 Prashant Bhat 2000 Laura Rudolph2008 Donna Anderson 2007 Myriam Rodriguez

Zachary Munitz2016 Youth of the YearZach was introduced to the Club when he was ordered to do volunteer work by the Juvenile Justice Program . At just 13 years old, Zach says “he was an isolated kid with no moral compass headed down a risky path .” Zach credits his experience at the Boys & Girls Club for whom he has become today . “I was given opportunities to grow and become a leader; they saw my potential . The Club had faith in me when nobody else did .”

Well deserving of this prestigious award, Zach is a senior at Sage Creek High School where he has been a member of the Superintendent Student Advisory Council, Vice President of the Aspiring Future Leaders of America Club, and has challenged himself by taking AP classes to prepare for college . He also plays varsity soccer and tennis, and would like to start a program called “We Speak Wednesday,” encouraging other youth to unplug and form meaningful relationships with one another .

Sarah Vidaurri2016 Youth of the Year Runner UpSarah has had to overcome many obstacles in her young life, and she credits the Club with helping her cope with those challenges . Struggling in school when she first joined, she is now an outstanding student who is always striving for her

YEAR IN REVIEW

An active Board of Directors, dedicated staff, and generous community members and business leaders have all worked tirelessly to raise the level of performance at Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2017 . Here are just a few of the year’s highlights .

Programs and Services - Bressi Ranch Clubhouse Overall Bressi attendance for the year averaged 249 children a day, a 12% increase from last year . Summer Camp sold out in less than a week this year, a new record! Members had the opportunity to participate in some new and unique programs including: PGA Academy, Bressi Kids Council,

Little Chefs, Kids Yoga, Steam Club, Mad Scientist Club, and Kerbal Space Program . Encouraged members in our incentive based homework help program, Power Hour, to assist members with needs . We tracked

over 200 members throughout the year and had over 1500 hours/weekly documented . The Bressi pre-teens had a unique opportunity to work with our Rancho Carlsbad Senior Community to participate in a

cooking club on site . Members were able to produce farm to table recipes and learn basics of cooking .

Programs and Services - Village Clubhouse Overall Village attendance for the year averaged 213 children a day . That’s 213 children who walked through our doors and

were safe, nurtured, and challenged by staff to grow and be their best . We continued to provide fun and beneficial experiences outside of the Clubhouse with weekly programs such as Garden Club at

Rancho Carlsbad, Yoga Club at Carlsbad Village Yoga Coop, and Skate Club at Carlsbad’s Safety Center . Our Middle School staff organized 5 cooking challenges for our kids with guest celebrity judges from around our community .

This year’s cook-off themes were; soups, pumpkin desserts, chili, nachos and dips . The Village Aquatics team has grown our programs to fill the weekly calendar with 5 levels of swim lessons for children, ‘Little

Ducklings’ programs for babies and moms, Splash Time for members from both Clubhouses, as well as Seniors’ Lap Swim, Water Aerobics, and Arthritis Swim .

A team of over 20 representatives from Charles Schwab provided a fun and eye-opening game for our middle school members . Guided by Schwab volunteers, our members learned how challenging it can be to navigate the financial world as an adult .

Programs and Services - Bobcat Bay Bobcat Bay was our daily after school program at Sage Creek High School which completed its second year with high impact

programming, including community service, tutoring, and the social recreational aspects of a teen center . This was also Sage Creek’s first graduating class where 4 of our “Club Kids” graduated .

We provided Bobcat Bay members with Community Outreach opportunities including beach clean-ups, Rancho Carlsbad Senior Community, and school beautification projects .

Members also had opportunities for peer bonding and teamwork activities to help reduce stress from their very busy trimester settings, which included: Hikes, trips to restaurants, and Get Air .

Programs and Services - The Armory The Armory, our daily after school program at Carlsbad High School completed its third year with high impact programming,

including community service, tutoring, and the social recreational aspects of a teen center . We provided CHS students with a ‘Cultivating Wellness’ workshop series that included topics on financial literacy, decision

making, teen dating safety, and healthy eating . One of the key components of our mission is to teach our members to give back to the community . Armory members went

into our community to provide volunteer service at places like Carlsbad by the Sea and Rancho Coastal Humane Society throughout the school year .

Our partnership with area Starbucks stores continued as we put on the 2nd Annual Summer Job Workshop, with breakout sessions that included creating resumes, interview strategies, application how-to’s, and how to be a great employee .

Programs and Services - Athletics Pacific Coast Hoops (PCH) has five competitive teams and now a high school elite team . PCH is designed for skill development

and playing amongst the best competition regionally . Pacific Coast Hoops D-League now has leagues during the summer and winter and clinics during the fall and spring . PCH

D-League is designed to introduce youngsters to basketball and prepare them for competitive basketball . Middle school golf has grown to 65 boys and girls . Our middle school league produced Coastal North Conference Champions in the following sports: • Girls Volleyball - Valley • Boys Basketball - Aviara Oaks • Cross Country - Aviara Oaks • Co-ed Golf - Aviara Oaks • Track and Field - Valley
