Greetings From Concordia College

Greetings to all from Concordia College and welcome to the 2016-17 season of cultural events. This fall marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of Concordia: 125 years of faith and learning, 125 years of partnership in the educational, cultural, and spiritual life of our community.

Please note the events marked with the 125th logo. I would highlight in particular the President’s Seminars featuring Carol Schneider in the fall and David Brooks in the spring, and the spring campus premiere of René Clausen’s

Reformation work for choir and orchestra. We look forward to celebrating with you as we honor our past and sustain our mission as a global liberal arts college of the Lutheran church.

In keeping with that mission, we look forward as well to the regular series of events that mark the cultural life of Concordia each year:• The Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium, this year devoted to America and

the Middle East• The Concordia Christmas Concerts, which this year will be filmed by Twin Cities

Public Television• The 12th anniversary of the National Book Awards at Concordia• The Concordia Celebration of Student Scholarship• The many performances in the musical, visual, and theatrical arts • The Visiting Writers Festival and academic lectures

Please join us as we rejoice in thought leaders and artists who bring their gifts from campus and around the world.

“Jerusalem: City of Three Faiths”

7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22Christiansen Recital Hall, Hvidsten Hall of Music

Jerusalem stands as a beacon of profound spirituality for Jews, Christians and Muslims, but it is also a celestial place for the children of Abraham, rich with symbolism and metaphors. The Rose Ensemble along with guest artist Yair Dala, Iraqi-Jewish musician and composer, will perform a fascinating program featuring Sufi mystical songs, Latin and Byzantine chant, Hebrew cantillation, and spiritual music from across the Arab world.

This performance is part of the 2016 Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium “America and the Middle East: Local and Global Dimensions.” This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. • With support from the Howard B. & Ruth F. Brin Jewish Arts Endowment (a fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation’s Foundation), the Otto Bremer Foundation, and the Target Foundation

“Cheer from Chawton: A Jane Austen Family Theatrical”

7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23Frances Frazier Comstock Theatre

Written and performed by Karen Eterovich, the play’s premise is an ingenious one. The plot: in the tradition of home theatricals held during her childhood at Steventon rectory, Jane Austen has prepared an entertainment for her family in which her siblings are to take part with her as performers. She expects to begin playing Mrs. Bennet (from “Pride and Prejudice”) to her brother James’ Mr. Bennet. But her family has played a trick on her: they have left Jane to tackle an unrehearsed solo performance. They provide her with a list of topics quizzing her on her life, her writing and the inspiration behind her work. These serve as the springboard for a most enjoyable evening, filled with Jane’s pointed observations on her family, friends, suitors and society, as well as her own hilarious early efforts as an author.

In celebration of Concordia’s 125th anniversary, the four Cultural Events Series events will be free to all as a special gift from Concordia College.

Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet7:30 p.m. Friday, March 10

Centrum, Knutson Campus Center

The Transcontinental Saxophone Quartet is a young virtuosic group that has played hundreds of concerts throughout Europe and the United States. The quartet offers novel and original sound possibilities with works that combine elements from classical, jazz, rock, traditional and ethnic music. Dedicated to promoting and developing the saxophone repertoire, the TSQ collaborates closely with Greek, Cypriot, Italian and American composers, through commission and performing new works for the medium. The ensemble features Russell Peterson (U.S.), soprano saxophone; Marco Albonetti (Italy), alto saxophone; Scotty Stepp (U.S.), tenor saxophone; and Yiannis Miralis (Cyprus), baritone saxophone.

Soprani Compagni7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25

Christiansen Recital Hall, Hvidsten Hall of Music Soprani Compagni was founded by Indiana Wesleyan University professors Dr. Lisa Dawson, Dr. Tammie Huntington and Dr. Phoenix Park-Kim to research and compile soprano duets; to model collaboration among sopranos; and commission new music for the stage and studio. The ensemble had its Carnegie Hall debut in 2012 and has performed at numerous universities, concert venues and conferences. A Council for Christian Colleges and Universities grant allowed the group to put together a team of 12 award-winning, composers to commission new works themed around “Portraits of Women.” “Portraits” is an expansion of soprano duet repertoire emphasizing contributions of women who have embraced their true worth and calling and have dared to change their world, and inspiring those who hear the new music.

In celebration of Concordia’s 125th anniversary, the four Cultural Events Series events will be free to all as a special gift from Concordia College.

Our current generation of students has come of age in a post-9/11 world that has been largely defined by America’s War on Terror, the center of which has been the Middle East. In light of this, and as global citizens, it’s especially important to deepen our understanding of the rich and diverse history and cultures of the Middle East and its people.

The 2016 Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium will move beyond the headlines and engage with the complex history, politics, cultures, and peoples of the Middle East. We want to connect the Concordia community with the local and global dimensions of America’s relations with the Middle East by exploring questions of power, security, faith, and identity and by building bridges that encourage inquiry, understanding, and engagement as global citizens in the 21st century.

For more information about the Faith, Reason and World Affairs Symposium, call the Office of Cultural Events at 218.299.4366.

The 2016 Faith, Reason and World Affairs art exhibition will feature Hend Al-Mansour’s latest installation work: “Mihrab.” Al-Mansour is an Arab-American artist based in Minneapolis who draws on her upbringing and identity as primary themes in her work. She writes, “Mihrab is Arabic for the hermitage where intense worship takes place. It is also the elaborate niche in a mosque, at the center of the wall facing Mecca, toward which the worshippers look. The lavish architectural mihrab is the holiest spot in the mosque. I am making mihrabs/niches as spiritual portraits. The niches will tell stories about Minnesotan Arab women as a means to highlight women’s intimacy with the Divine, therefore, question male-dominant kinship to God and highlight the notion of gender equality.”

A Minnesota transplant from Saudi Arabia, Al-Mansour draws on her Arab upbringing in her work. While thematically it makes references to the gender politics in Arab society and in Islamic teaching it borrows aesthetics from Arabic and Islamic art forms. Geometric design, Arabesques, henna patterns, Arabic calligraphy and stylized figures are characteristic of her prints and installations. Al-Mansour has participated in regional, national and international art shows, given speeches about Arab art and her personal journey, and curated exhibitions featuring Middle Eastern artists.

This exhibition occurs in conjunction with the symposium and is supported by Concordia College’s Office of Cultural Events, The Arts Partnership and the Lake Region Arts Council.

TSImmerse yourself in an emotional re-telling of

Jesus Christ’s last week of life. “The Passion of Jesus Christ” is a new, oratorio-length composition written by Dr. René Clausen and commissioned to observe the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The hour-long composition, performed by the 420 musicians of the Concordia Choirs and Orchestra, brings audience members closer to powerful scenes from Christ’s procession into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, the trial before Pilate and the crucifixion. In addition to telling the story of the Passion, music and text reveal

moments when major figures struggle with the motivation and implication of their actions.

The passion of Christ is at the heart of the Reformation and Martin Luther’s theology, which critiqued late medieval religion by holding up the theology of the cross.

The composition is made possible by a generous gift from John and Veronna Capone.

Clausen is conductor of The Concordia Choir and featured composer on the 2013 Grammy-winning Best Choral Performance CD.
