ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (cont.)

Our standards-based early childhood programs are designed to introduce children to the exciting history of the Western Reserve. Using the tangible history of Northeast Ohio, children can explore topics like the development of transportation in the region and the lifestyles of the past.

History on the Move – Pre-K to K1 hour | $105 / groupHow has transportation changed over time? How have the designs, looks, and safety features of land, air, and water vehicles changed? Students are surrounded by cars, bikes, airplanes, and boats from long ago as they explore, observe, compare, and contrast these vehicles to present-day modes of transportation using the exhibit Setting the World in Motion. Students build model vehicles using building sets and maneuver themselves through a road course while they practice observing present-day traffic signs.

In the Backyard of History – Pre-K 1 hour or 1.5 hours | $105 or $120 / groupIn this hands-on exhibit designed just for kids, students discover through play with an interactive Westside Market, building area, dress-up corner, old fashioned toys and chores sections, a garden, and a play house! Students explore the concept of family roots and what life was like for children growing up in the past.

For more Pre-K options, please see Carousel Choose Your Own Adventure and Study Break Programs.

SCHOOL AND YOUTH PROGRAMS

Our School and Youth programs are ideal for school field trips, scout groups, summer camp outings, and more! We have standards-based programs for all grades, spanning topics from immigration in the Western Reserve to Cleveland’s most well-known entrepreneurs and their inventions.

Carousel Choose Your Own Adventure – Grades Pre-K – 81 or 2 hours | $105 or $130 / groupClimb onto the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel and Choose Your Own Adventure. Learn the history of carousels, and then choose from a variety of carousel-related activities ranging from geometry or physics to creative writing, artistic expression and more! At least one carousel ride is included with the program.

Available Adventures:

• Dancer — Grades Pre-K-2 | 1 hour Imagine you are a carousel animal! Students will use their imaginations to interpret the movement of the Grand Carousel and imitate the movements of the carousel animals. Finish up with a make-and-take craft focusing on carousel animals!

• Artist — Grades K-5 | 2 hours Students will use their awareness of a carousel horse style, theme, and stance to help them create their own unique carousel horse.

• Author — Grades 2-8 | 2 hoursCreate a story based on the Grand Carousel! Using their knowledge of carousels, students will develop a story that merges the carousel experience with creative writing. Activities include developing characters and using a story arc.

• Mathematician — Grades 6-8 | 2 hoursBecome a carousel designer! Students will use their knowledge of geometry to find the radius, circumference, and area of the carousel to find out, theoretically, how many horses will fit on the Euclid Beach Grand Carousel. After discovering an approximate number, they will create a class scale model using origami!

• Physicist — Grades 6-8 | 2 hours Become an amusement park engineer! Students will use their knowledge of physics to calculate the speed of the carousel and how many rotations it makes in one ride. Students will also look at how centrifugal and centripetal forces affect objects while identifying both potential and kinetic energy.
