Our MissionFollowing the values and traditions of our founders, the mission of DePaul School for Hearing and Speech is to teach each child who is deaf or hard of hearing to listen, speak, and learn. Our children enter the educational mainstream with the foundation to succeed.

IdentityFounded in 1908 by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, DePaul School for Hearing and Speech has been providing quality Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) education to children who are deaf or hard of hearing for more than 100 years. DePaul School is licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an Approved Private School (APS).

It is the policy of DePaul School to provide equal educational opportunities to all students who qualify for admission without regard to race, color, religion, sex, ancestry, or national origin.

Dear Friends –Strategically Advancing the Mission

The close of the 2016-2017 school year marked our 109th year of continuous service at DePaul School for Hearing and Speech. Very few organizations are able to make such a claim in this era of constant change, where marking a successful decade or quarter century is considered significant. During each of those 109 years, we have adhered to the same mission: teaching children who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen, to speak, and to learn. Hearing our students share their thoughts and ideas is the most satisfying work in our world! Keeping our mission front and center and sustainable is more than just a labor of love. It requires us to keep our finger on the pulse of change. It requires recognizing parental needs within a changing cultural context. It requires awareness of changes in technology that help our students access sound and engage with dynamic learning tools. But, even in this ever-changing world, the DePaul team remains focused on creating an individualized program of success for each student.

Our success is measured by helping students achieve a level of language competency to transition to mainstream schools, which means we celebrate each child’s achievements by saying goodbye. During the 2016-2017 school year, we proudly saw 10 students meet this goal and enter their neighborhood schools.

Another hallmark of our program is the research conducted by our staff in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh. In a rapidly changing field of study, actively engaging in research connects us with others who are also shaping the future of listening and spoken language education. Because we use state of the art equipment and practices, we recognize that there is little research to define best practices of new equipment and new strategies. As such, we view it as our contribution to the industry to gather data and analyze it to determine the impact of these changes. For example, we have been studying the impact of training our students in effective ways to listen in noisy environments, in preparation for their transition into the mainstream. Although cochlear implants have been around for several decades, the impact and applications of cochlear implants are still largely uncharted. These studies have an direct effect on how we serve children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Although we cannot predict our future, we know we will welcome the changes we face, much the same way we have throughout our long history. We continue to evaluate our practices to strategically advance our mission. We are certain that we cannot face these changes alone. We are deeply indebted to you, our supporters, who make it possible for us to provide these specialized services to children who are deaf or hard of hearing. We are so grateful to know that you champion our successes.

The Love Notes Foundation gave students the opportunity to channel their inner rockstars by

offering free piano and guitar lessons.

The Preschool students learned all about birds from the National Aviary’s visit to the school!Students in our Elementary Self Advocacy

Group practiced their skills in a fun field trip to

the movies and Eat ‘N Park.

The cast of the CLO’s production of

“Pumpboys and Dinettes” visited with students

and jammed on pots and pans!

Bishop David Zubick stopped by for a visit with students and even got to sing a song with the preschoolers!
