Message from Program Director Sister Zita Telkamp, CDP

For the past ten years, I have served as the Program Director of La Posada Providencia. During the 2016-2017 fiscal year, we welcomed the third highest number of immigrants and asylum seekers in our twenty-seven years’ history of “welcoming the stranger.” The 486 men, women, and children whom we have had the privilege of serving in 2016-2017 and those who are arriving at our doors today as I write this article, calls to mind the following Scripture passage:

“My father was a wandering Aramean who went down to Egypt...and lived there as an alien...When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us...we cried to the Lord...and He heard our cry...He brought us out of Egypt...into a land flowing

with milk and honey.” Deuteronomy 26:5-9

Many of the 486 clients who arrived at La Posada in 2016-2017 not only suffered extreme poverty, maltreatment, unjust imprisonment, and death threats as a result of actions taken by their oppressive governments; but some were robbed, kidnapped, and tortured for ransom as they journeyed in search of welcoming hands. It was the welcoming hands of La Posada, the generous support of friends and contributors, and their trust in God that “. . .brought them out of a land of oppression and danger. . .into a land of freedom and peace.”

Thank you, to all of you whose names are listed in this annual report; without your assistance we could not have kept the lights on, water running and food on the table as we welcomed the third highest number of brothers and sisters who arrived in 2016-2017.

May God’s abundant blessings be yours.

Gratefully,

3

Victor Escalona, former La Posada client, became a U.S. citizen on January 20, 2017 “I came to the United States 6 years ago. Like all beginnings, it was tough; but with perseverance, I have been able to overcome most obstacles. In 2011, I moved from the Rio Grande Valley area to western Pennsylvania to start my new life. My immediate goal was to improve my English skills and immerse myself into the American culture. Today, I continue to have an accent, but I do my best to improve it every single day.”

In 2015, I applied to and was hired as a bilingual customer service representative for a health insurance company in downtown Pittsburgh that serves Medicare and Medicaid recipients. I love helping others and giving back, so this job has been a perfect match for me.

I always remember everything La Posada did for me and I will forever be thankful.”

On July 2, 2016, Birhan, one of our client residents from Ethiopia, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Naomi. The La Posada family shared the joy of the occasion with the new parents. Naomi was Birhan’s first born child and the first baby born in the 2017 fiscal year. Helping mothers and families is a priority at La Posada. We take pride knowing that our expecting mothers receive needed prenatal medical care and emotional support.
