If I was a tree, I would be a Pin Oak.
Pin Oak grow tall and straight relatively
quickly. This would represent not only
my height but also my eagerness to
grow and learn. Pin Oak are also known to be easy to transplant, which would
represent my adaptability to changing circumstances. Finally, Pin Oak get their
name from their strong wood, which was used as a pin to hold the corners of
buildings together. This represents my strong will and determination, it also
shows I am someone you can depend on to support you.

Leadership
Parliamentary Procedure
Through my work with the NACURH Services and Recognition Office I have had
many opportunities to learn and practice Roberts Rules of Order. While Kent Interhall
Council’s Constitution says our meetings are conducted by Roberts Rules, Presidents
have the liberty to follow these rules as strictly or loosely as they see fit. I personally
believe that a more formal use of these rules would not only teach a valuable skill to all
the general body members, but also help our meetings run quickly and effectively. To
make sure KIC General Body Members understand and can effectively use Roberts
Rules I would make sure the presidents of all the halls are also proficient in them.

unique dynamic of the KIC E-Board.
From being the “Set Up Assistant” for my elementary school
Manners Club, to being one of three “Dictators” of my high school Latin
Club, I have always been drawn to leadership positions and have found
myself leading many organization. When I came to college I couldn’t
help myself from joining Engleman Hall Council as President and
Director for Multiculturalism, which then lead to me running for
Director of Student Relations of Kent Interhall Council. Throughout all
of these experiences I learned many valuable parts of leadership,
growing in my very understanding of it. I can’t even imagine how I
would describe leadership in elementary school, but I now know it is
ever growing and changing. Leadership isn’t anything anyone can ever
master but something you constantly learn. I hope that if elected I can not only
continue to learn and grow, but help every member of KIC to learn and grow as well.
My experience leading an Executive Board while on Engleman Hall Council, and
chairing the Advocacy Committee will help me effectively lead the KIC Executive
Board. My current experience on the KIC E-Board also helps me to understand the

our own organization and how we function.
During my involvement with the NACURH Services and Recognition
Office and KIC over this past year I have had many opportunities to
interact with and other “KIC’s” around the nation. Having these
opportunities to see how other Residence Hall Associations (RHA) run
and what they accomplish gives me a unique prospective to see where
KIC can grow and the areas we excel at. Having this understanding will
allow me to encourage our organization to grow in new places and
strengthen the parts that we can rely on. I hope to continue offering
opportunities to meet and interact with other RHA’s to the Executive
Board of KIC as well all KIC members. I believe these experiences
provide amazing opportunities to expand our understanding of
of KIC can be a model of dedicated, passionate, and healthy leaders.
Maintaining physical and mental health while involved in multiple student
organization, attending class, and having a meaningful college experience is a
challenge for all student leaders. I take my commitments seriously and realize I need
to take my personal health seriously as well. This past year has really been a
monumental learning experience for me, not only in time management skills but also
for self-care. I have finally learned how to balance not only my homework and
organizational involvement, but also time to myself. I have learnt that personal time
is necessary for me to continue to be an asset to those who depend on me, and also
for me to make the most of my time in college. If elected I plan to not only continue
my own self-care but also demand it of the Executive Board. I hope that the entirety

Empowering Hall Council
Growing a Forest
One of my largest goals, and arguably the most
important, is to empower all of the individual hall
councils. Our organization’s strength lies in its ability to
reach all the residence halls. We depend on the
individual hall councils for that strength. My goal is to
focus more of the KIC Executive Board’s time into
supporting and empowering those hall councils. This
starts with comprehensive leadership education for the
entire hall council, including Resident Assistant (RA)
Advisors. I would start by working with the incoming
Director of Leadership Development to make sure that
fall hall council training prepares hall councils for the
upcoming year and gives them the foundations to
succeed for the year. I would also work with hall council
presidents during Presidents Roundtable to make sure
they know how to not only lead effectively, but to
ensure they also know how to make changes within
their hall. Another large part of empowering hall
councils is to empower the Resident Assistant Advisor. I hope to work with the
Residence Hall Directors and incoming RA Advisors to ensure they have the proper
tools and knowledge to support the hall councils in the best possible ways. This
would include making sure they understand the duties and responsibilities of all the
positions in their hall council, and working with them to make sure hall council
conflicts are being managed in the best way possible. Ensuring the hall councils have
the tools they need to succeed and are learning to be great leaders is not only
essential to our organization, but essential to our mission as an organization.
Reevaluating KIC

Unified Vision
KIC has been making an impact on the Kent Campus
and doing great things for many years. It is time we
looked at ourselves critically and started to assess what
we are doing well, and what we can improve. I know
that, personally, there have been times when I had to
stop and ask, “Why do we do this?” Often the answer to
this question is because it has always been. I trust the
leaders before me had valid reasons for writing parts of
our constitution the way they are and setting the
precedence they have. That being said I also trust the
leaders we are today to reevaluate these practices. We
must take the time to assess and decide if these are still
valid to our organization. One of my first goals for the
summer will be to reformat our governing documents to
make them as accessible as possible. With that
accomplished, a committee can be made in the fall to
reevaluate them and propose changes, if deemed
necessary, to the general body. By reevaluating our
governing documents we can not only strengthen our
organization , but our own understanding of it.
training so that we can all help KIC grow together.
My final goal is to have a unified vision of Kent Interhall Council for the following
year. Because of the executive board members’ independence, and the individuality
of all of the hall councils, it can be hard to move KIC forward as a whole. One of the
first things I would like to accomplish if elected would be to work with the incoming
KIC executive board to create a vision for the year. This vision would be a guiding
idea when planning programs and representing KIC in general. We would then
present this unified vision to all of the hall councils at hall council

experiences.
Please elaborate on one of your past leadership
can look back on with pride.
I found my time as President and Director of Multiculturalism of Engleman Hall
Council to be one of my most rewarding leadership positions. I not only made some
of my best friends on hall council that year but also learned an incredible amount
about leadership and what it means to be a leader. Though Engleman Hall had a
legacy of being uninvolved and small, I along with my executive board, took this as
a challenge and set out to make Engleman Hall an active community and a large
player in KIC. Though we had many ups and downs, I and the rest of my E-Board at
the time, can look back on those times and see the difference we made. We started
out as a rag-tag group of individuals and quickly became an elite team of hall
programmers and student leaders. The experience really sparked my love for KIC
and residence life in general. One of our greatest achievements was planning a large
scale Lil’ Sibs weekend event that opened up the entire hall to the Kent State
community. We changed our small, quiet hall into a Disney-themed funhouse with
tons of games and food. That event is something I, and my entire executive board,

position you are running for.

What skills can you bring to Kent Interhall Council?
I can bring many skills to Kent Interhall Council, but I think my knowledge of
NACURH and other RHA’s is the most valuable to KIC and myself in the role of
president. Because I have been fortunate enough to serve as the Associate Director for
Administration and Finance of the NACURH Services and Recognition Office, I have
been able to get a larger understanding of RHA’s across the country, and world. This
understanding of RHA and how they are run will help me as President to not only
help ours be effective and efficient but to also help KIC grow in its potential. My
understanding of parliamentary procedures will help to keep our meetings running
smoothly and equitably. I hope to help Kent Interhall Council maintain its high status
within the regional organization and also grow in its role of campus involvement.

need to improve.
Explain one strength you have, and one area in you
I think my directness is a strength I have and also an area I need to improve. In
general I am a very up front and honest. I try to live by the motto of “open and honest
communication.” I strive to keep my opinions and thoughts direct and honest, as that
is what I appreciate personally. Usually my honesty and open communication helps
to get my point across and help others understand where I am coming from. It aids in
ensuring we are on the same page and are communicating effectively. On the other
hand it can be too direct and lead to misunderstandings of meaning. I have been, and
am currently, working on changing how I approach giving ideas and feedback while
keeping the open honesty I value so much. Finding the balance of directness to
passiveness is something I plan to continually work on, as well as communicate to
others about. By opening a dialogue on the subject I hope to avoid any conflicts based
around it and to build an understanding of effective communication.
