CIRCUMSCRIPTION PROJECTS

2016-2021 PLANNING –35– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

By mandate of the 47th General Chapter, each Circumscription of the Order should work with a “Circumscription project”, approved by the respective Major Superiors and the Gen-eral Congregation. A Circumscription is an area for the building of Pious Schools and the cooperation between several demarcations geographically close to each other. The framework defining this coop-eration are the Keys of life approved by the General Chapter. The Circumscription project identifies the cooperation modalities and the actions to be im-plemented. The coordination of the project is entrusted to the respective General Assistant.

2016-2021 PLANNING –36– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

CIRCUMSCRIPTION OF ASIA

INTRODUCTION

Asia is the youngest circumscription of the Order. It was created in the 47th General Chapter, held in Esztergom (Hungary).

As a Circumscription, it is an area for the building of Pious Schools and the cooperation between De-marcations. To these common duties of each Circumscription, a very specific duty is added, including the Vocational Pastoral in other countries, focused on the expansion of the Order in the Continent.

We are present in six different countries, assisted by two Vice-Provinces (Japan-the Philippines and In-dia) and two communities in Indonesia: Japan, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Viet Nam and China. We have 17 canonical communities and a hopeful number of religious, mostly of simple vows and in the process of Initial Formation.

We feel co-responsible of the development of the Order and we clearly bet on growing in an “Order mentality”, to enable an adequate development of the Pious Schools in Asia and in all the Continents.

OUR CHALLENGES

We fully support the nine “keys of life” of the Order approved by the 47th General Chapter, highlighting some aspects that affect us more directly.

VOCATIONAL CULTURE. We have a good number of vocations, but the Vocational Culture challenge fully affects us. We also have to face the challenge of changing mentality in order that the vocational aspect inspires and revitalizes all the areas of our life and mission.

INITIAL FORMATION. Our essential challenges are clearly about the Formation of Formators, their team-working, the adequate development and launching of formative projects. We need to improve the Initial Formation quality and the training of formators.

COMMUNITY LIFE. We need to strengthen our communities based on a revitalization dynamics, as proposed by the 47th General Chapter. We bet on living and working on a project basis, for a good formation of the Rectors, and an adequate care of all the community mediations envisaged in our Con-stitutions and Rules.

ONGOING FORMATION. It concerns all of us in our different life cycles, with the group of “young adults” being the most numerous. We especially bet on growing in the accompaniment culture.

PIARIST MINISTRY. We are growing in the development of our ministry. We bet on working in depth in the Calasanctian identity of our Schools and of the whole of our works, encouraging the Calasanz Movement and the option for the most poor. These are the axes that inspire our common work.

PARTICIPATION. We have not entered yet in depth in this dynamics that is so important in our Order, but we are fully aware of its urgence. We wish to take steps towards the formation of our partners, the development of the shared mission and of the Piarist Fraternity. We deem essential the fact of working to make known the project of the Order and to get it studied by the religious.

2016-2021 PLANNING –37– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

ECONOMY. We are aware of the difficulty of achieving an overall sustainability of our life and mis-sion. We need the accompaniment of the Order both to improve the management of our assets and to generate resources external to the Order. We offer our full commitment to support and cooperate with guidelines and options provided by the General Congregation, as well as with our commitment with ITAKA-Escolapios

REESTRUCTURING, CONSOLIDATION AND EXPANSION. The three dynamics are connected and must be developed among us. Each Vice-Province has its own challenges that must be specifically addressed.

a) We share the Novitiate in Cebúan and the International Seminary, that must be cared and im-proved. For the International Seminary there must be a new project encompassing the new situations.

b) In a particularly meaningful way we jointly address the Vocational Pastoral challenge in new countries with a General Coordinator, a specific project (including criteria, options, strategies, timetables and tools) and the cooperation of everybody. We are considering the work in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar. We deem it important to raise awareness on this chal-lenge among the religious of our demarcations, for ownership purposes.

c) We need to take clarifying steps on the outlook of our presence in China, as well as on the num-ber of missionaries.

d) In Viet Nam, we need to find the first house for the community, a clear objective for this four-year period.

e) In Japan, we must continue to accompany what we have, as well as to address new options in the line of development and of the incorporation of Japanese vocations.

f ) In the Philippines, its the time for consolidation of the dynamics of every demarcation. Simi-larly, we must achieve the full development of Davao, with the great investment that is included. We strongly bet on the improvement of our Vocational Pastoral and Initial Formation.

g) The Vice-Province faces the challenge of becoming a Province (Pious Schools of Asia-Pacific) and of reflecting on the best legal structures for developing such an extensive and mixed reality.

h) In India, we raise the question regarding an adequate consolidation of our presence in the north and of each of the current presences, as well as the starting in a new state, the consolidation of Vocational Pastoral and Initial Formation. We will work to open the Novitiate of the Vice-Province. .

CALASANZ. We want to participate with the Order in the next anniversaries of 2017, and to struggle for Calasanz to be more known and honored in Asia. Similarly, we attach great importance to the trans-lation of Calasanctian materials and to the development of new materials.

OUR COOPERATION PROJECT FOR 2015-2019

We raise the question of working together, based on a clear cooperation dynamics, in the following areas:

I-COMMUNICATION. We will work on an online quarterly newsletter. The coordinator will be Fr. Martín Bravo, of the com-munity of Indonesia, and his collaborators Fr. Antony Biju, of India, and Fr. Crisanto Cagabcag, of Ja-pan-the Philippines.

We will have “correspondents” of each country for the Ephemerides, according to the instructions we receive from the Responsible of the official magazine of the Order. The objective is to have something of Asia in all the issues.

2016-2021 PLANNING –38– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

II- FORMATIVE MEETINGS

Three formative meetings are scheduled for 2016 and 2017.

a) A joint meeting of Rectors of the communities and a representative group of the “young adults” of the Circumscription. We have in mind all the Rectors and some young adults of each place (tenta-tively, two from China, if possible; one from Viet Nam; two from Japan; two from Indonesia; four from the Philippines and four from India). The Meeting will focus on the “accompaniment culture” and on the meaning of Vocational Culture, personal projects, Order mentality, etc. It will take place in Manila on January 2017.

b) A meeting of the 11 formators of the Circumscription, to work on common items and on topics regarding the different stages (pre-Novitiate and, separately, Novitiate and Juniorate). It will take place in Manila on August 2017. The accompaniment of Fr. General’s Delegate would be desirable.

c) A meeting on Piarist ministry, focused on two key areas: the piarist identity of our Schools (inviting the responsible) and promotion of the Calasanz Movement. Its format will have open sessions that allow the presence of Juniors. It will take place in Bangalore on September 2017.

III-VOCATIONAL PASTORAL

What we intend to work jointly refers to expansion to other countries. Stakes are clear: Sri Lanka, Thai-land. Myanmar and Malaysia. According to progress of works, we’ll see if it is convenient to undertake a reflection on this challenge. To start with, a work should be done in the demarcations in order to in-crease the religious’ awareness and availability for this challenge, and to operate with a clear presence of coordinator, project and programming.

IV-SHARING AN ONLINE SPACE

We will create a specific Asian “cloud”, in which we will post all the materials that can be shared. Fr. Urbán will coordinate this project.

V- DYNAMIZING TEAM

The project dynamization is entrusted to Fr. József Urbán, General Assistant of Asia, and to the Respon-sible for the Vice-Provinces and communities of Indonesia. All four (Frs. József Urbán, Miguel Artola, Víctor Gil and Thomas Pallithazhathu) work online, but annual presence meetings are expected.

2016-2021 PLANNING –39– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

CIRCUMSCRIPTION OF AFRICA

The following are the decisions taken by the Circumscription of Africa regarding matters to be worked jointly by the two Provinces, coordinated by the General Congregation. Some of the options are already scheduled and entrusted to selected individuals, but the project needs further development.

VOCATIONAL CULTURE

1. Definition of Vocational Culture. It would be useful to count with the collaboration of the Gen-eral Secretariat of Vocational and Formative Culture. The ordinary mediations of the Circumscrip-tion may be used for working these matters starting in 2016.

2. Development of a circumscription Statute on Vocational Pastoral. The Responsible of the Cir-cumscription for Vocational Pastoral ought to work to adjust the statutes of both Provinces.

3. Identifying anti-vocational elements. A work involving all the individuals. A work to be done by each Province, with the aid of the Responsible for VP. We want to give every religious the possibil-ity of contributing, expressing his ideas, etc. The Responsible for Vocational Pastoral may prepare a framework for both demarcations, to avoid dispersion. Work shall be done in community meetings, etc.

4. Promotion of accompaniment culture. We deem it a very technical item that requires experts’ support. We, therefore, suggest MMSS to find persons who can help us. We ought to leverage inputs of the local church, and the experiences of other congregations, etc. The Responsible for Vocational Pastoral must prepare a list of countries where this training may be conducted. A roster of religious to specialize in this matter may be sent.

INITIAL FORMATION

5. Institutionalization of a biennial meeting of the Responsible for FI. To be launched by MMSS and the Assistants of IF. Focusing preferably on the appointed formators and the other members of the formation team. Whether it shall be open to the Calasanctian Family is a question to be decided. Items regarding teamwork need to be worked.

COMMUNITY LIFE

6. Training Responsible for communities. Those in charge of communities. A formation session on community animation and leadership for superiors must be prioritized.

7. Development of a framework on the accompaniment of religious. With the support of Assis-tants of Community life and the superiors. Through retreats, the ongoing formation by age, etc.

ONGOING FORMATION

8. Proposal of ongoing formation by age groups. With the support of the Responsible for Commu-nity life.

9. Possibility of a circumscription meeting in the context of a General Visitation to young adults.

2016-2021 PLANNING –40– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

MINISTRY

10. We may cooperate in the formation of Catechists and Monitors, from our specific charisma. 11. Creation of a Secretariat for the Ministry in Africa. To suggest activities. For example, sending

piarist ministry key elements to all the works so that the projects of each work may be informed by them. This same Secretariat may work in a collaborative way with the state bodies. All this should be shared in the Circumscription.

ECONOMY

12. Improvement of the economic management, making easier the consultants work. With two responsible appointed, progress is possible, starting with an information sharing and a roadmap with specific objectives.

13. Mutual support for fundraising. Connecting Itaka-Escolapios and Educación Solidaria of both countries. Sharing the network, we can support each other.

LAITY

14. A Circumscription meeting. Hosted by MMSS and the responsible. This item needs to be care-fully assessed, because some religious find it very hard and there are lay people in Africa with such a profound sense of the sacred that they have difficulty to enter in this mentality. We need to be operational. To offer our collaborators an action plan that is very clear and developed with their participation. They are people who appreciate us, and we need to offer them something attractive.

CONSOLIDATION AND EXPANSION

15. We can work in the sharing of ministry experiences. This can be done immediately. We ought to reflect carefully on the accompaniment. First, we should explain to the young people what this practice is about and what is expected from them.

16. Collaboration of the Provinces in Daloa and Congo, with the purpose of transmitting the message of our appreciation of these piarist presences.

17. Support to the Order in this process. In an operational manner, we are open to the Order’s proposi-tions.

CALASANz

18. ALTUM. The first effort is about raising awareness of the brethren on ownership of the project. Let’s see how it works. We are the first customers. We can enroll juniors.

19. Creation of a “seminary” in our formation houses. The “Calasanctian Week”. With religious of sev-eral communities. Writing articles. Highlighting this option.

20. Short run options: holiday camps, enhancing awareness on Calasanz, entitling all our structures with the name of Calasanz, etc.

21. Piarist ministries, studying the way to improve them, as they are somewhat left aside. Development of preparatory materials.

CIRCUMSCRIPTION MEETINGS. Proposed on an annual basis, and with more participants other than the MM. SS.

FORMATION OF FORMATORS. January 2018. Formators of juniors. Also in Yaoundé. Leveraging the whole formative team, not only the

PROPOSED MEETING OF THE CALASANCTIAN FAMILY. We suggest December 27, 2017-January 2, 2018 as the date for the meeting. It may be in the DRC or Libreville, even if there are elections. It could also be in Abidjan. Topic: Knowing each other (Guide framework) and developing a relevant project of Calasanctian Family (what can we do together as a Family). For instance, we could suggest a Forum on Education, with the participation of members of the Calasanctian Family.

2016-2021 PLANNING –42– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

CIRCUMSCRIPTION OF EUROPE

VOCATIONAL CULTURE

1) How to raise awareness among the religious and lay people on the centrality of the VC in our life, in order to consider it not only as a good idea but as a way of living intensely our vocation. How to raise awareness on the fact that this affects us and obliges us to renew our own vocation.a) Sharing meetings of each Province on the topic of VC.

2) Access to the university world is a central challenge to Vocational Pastorala) Information between Provinces about destinations and hosting of young people belonging to

the Calasanz Movement (Erasmus, other...) b) Considering the relevance of creating a joint platform in the Web (for this and other topics)

3) A Pastoral focus on the radical commitments of the Gospel: experience of faith, community and the poor.a) Offer experiences of the essential elements of Christian life: prayer, community, the poor, in a

context of a renewed ecclesiology. Write down a list of concrete possibilities, including working areas, prayer places, etc.

b) Host a Vocational Culture Meeting (subject to a potential plan of the Order).

INITIAL FORMATION

1) Working on our three pillars: spirituality, ministry and community, at the same time and clearly.a) Sharing ideas and presenting experiences between formators in order to establish common cri-

teria.2) Initial Formation is of a handicraft nature, as each person has its own process; we ought to advance

in a customized approach. We work on a one by one basis, which is clearly understood in European areas.

3) Formation of formators. More can be done in Europe than in each country. Formators should be trained in accompaniment, leveraging the courses that are scheduled.

4) Institutionalization of summer courses in adequate places for learning languages, and sharing op-portunities of practicing languages in situ.

COMMUNITY LIFE AND ONGOING FORMATION

1) To carefully consider the quality of Community life and its relationship with ministry. Not only at school level, but also at the level of other experiences.

2) To advance in the model of “piarist presence”. It is useful to organize a meeting of religious and lay responsible of presences, after some experience.

3) To bet on the variety of styles, with a clear view of the model we are trying to reproduce. There may be a double pattern.a) Being aware of the different models of Piarist community life, and of the key elements of the

different styles ( “where” and “why”, etc.).

2016-2021 PLANNING –43– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

4) To take care of the middle-aged, a tract of life not well-cared-for. It may be convenient to encourage some religious to experience in this area. Organizing a Meeting for the middle-aged (if nothing is scheduled at the Order level).a) To promote significant experiences at the Provincial level (sabbatical year?): missionary, lin-

guistic, formation, spiritual experiences...

5) To create a European calendar of significant events in the Provinces (thus facilitating participation).

MINISTRY

1) We need to have living and significant Christian piarist communities. This is fundamental for en-suring the development of our ministry.

2) Promotion of a piarist work for the most poor. We seek to create a piarist institution for addressing emergency situations and for providing our collaboration.

3) Fundraising. A European Office.

4) Sharing among us at different levels.a) Meetings of the Provincial Educational Secretariats. We need to advance in Networking.b) Creation of a NFE team at a European level, may be leveraging our experience in former Euro-

pean Circumscription.

PARTICIPATION

1) We are working on this, and it would be very important to share experiences that could help us to know each other, to reach agreements, etc. This is one of the matters we need to share most.a) Some limited forum in which to share our progress in participation among European Provinces.b) It is also a challenge to accompany the participation process, in which some developments are

expected.c) It is important to work on our own formation, particularly in relation with the laity.

2) To continue the dynamics of knowing the various realities (subject to a potential plan of the Order).

3) To take care of the formation of the lay people, their vocational discernment, and the quality of the Fraternity’s communities.

4) To review the model of capitular organization. We need to advance.a) Reflecting together on the itinerary of the Provincial Chapter.

ECONOMY

1) To create an Office to seek economic resources in Europe or to participate in the potential Office of the Order.

2) To review the usefulness of our patrimonial works (movable and immovable assets). We should discern about selling part of this patrimony.a) Gathering different catalogues and seeking piarist discernment criteria as well as possibilities

of sendingb) Classifying our artistic and property holdings at the Provincial level, and discerning the way to

2016-2021 PLANNING –44– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

raise financial resources.

3) To improve the economic management of the different Provinces, based always on piarist criteria.a) Creating a team of treasurers to reflect on management, patrimony, investments, strategies, sup-

pliers...b) Reviewing, at the Provincial level, the property investments that generate extraordinary re-

sources.

REESTRUCTURING, CONSOLIDATION AND EXPANSION

1) To complete internal restructuring, so strong in Europe.a) Sharing in MMSS meetings the processes of each Province.

2) To keep up with the criterion that new foundations must target the most poor. This should be kept in force.

3) Growth can be also with lay people, who can found new presences with or without us.a) Reflecting on and identifying a model of foundation conducted only by lay people.

4) To reflect on the transmission of our identity to the new piarist presences in new countries. Europe can contribute a great deal.a) Addressing options as the “adoption” of some countries, so some of the new foundations could

be accompanied by consolidated Provinces of Europe or of the Order.

CALASANz

1) To share our initiatives related to the Jubilee Calasanctian Year.a) Putting together what we are doing, ideas, programs...b) Encouraging some piarist work for the most poor.

2) To be informed on the proposal regarding the CALASANZ ROAD, that the Province of Catalonia is preparing, in order to be able to undergo the experience or to participate in ALTUM- Calasanctian formation School.

CIRCUMSCRIPTION STRUCTURES

1. Team of Major Superiors. Integrated by European Provincials. It will meet annually, and as need-ed.

2. Team of Non Formal Education. Integrated by the Responsible for NFE of each Province or by the person appointed by Fr. Provincial.

2016-2021 PLANNING –47– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

GENERAL CANONICAL VISITATION

The General Congregation is already preparing the Schedule and the Objectives of the General Ca-nonical Visitation, taking into account two significant circumstances: the Local and Demarcational Chapters that will be held between August 2018 and May 2019 in the whole Order, and the Calasanctian Jubilee Year from November 2016 to November 2017.

The Schedule of the General Canonical Visitation must take into account these important dates, in or-der that its development matches with the capitular processes of the demarcations and with the Jubilee Year of the Order.

The Canonical Visitation is expected to start on November 2017 and to end on December 2020. In sev-eral demarcations, the General Visitation will take place before their Chapters; in others, after their Chapters.

We anticipate here some of the priorities that Fr. General will highlight throughout the Canonical Visi-tation:

1. The personal dialogue with all the religious and the meeting with each community.2. The promotion of the Keys of life of the Order in each local presence and in the Demarcation.3. Working meetings with those teams and forums that the Demarcational Congregation deems

opportune. For example, Rectors of Communities, the youth in Initial Formation, the formators, the coordinating teams of the mission, the teams of Vocational Pastoral, the teams of piarist presence, etc. Naturally, the meeting with the Demarcational Congregation is fundamental.

4. In the Provinces where there is a Piarist Fraternity, a meeting will try to be held with each small community of the Fraternity and with Local and Demarcational Councils.

5. Usually, in a General Visitation there is not much free time, but Fr. General wishes to express his availability for those meetings that the Demarcational Congregation desires to host (students, teachers, young people in pastoral processes, the responsible for parishes, etc.). Similarly, if it is deemed convenient, a visit to the diocesan bishop may be included.

6. In the context of the General Visitation, there will be meetings of the young adult religious of the Circumscription. The dates of these meetings will be timely reported.

7. In the Visitation the specific circumstances of each demarcation will be taken into account as well as their priorities and requirements. Naturally, this will affect the schedule.

The General Canonical Visitation will be officially announced in a Circular Letter to the whole Order, in which all the information regarding the schedule of the Visitation will be provided, so that the MMSS will have sufficient time to prepare the program of the Visitation to their Demarcation.

The initial plan envisages the following, still provisional, timing:2017, Austria and Bethany.2018, Bethany, Western Africa, Japan-the Philippines, Californias, Brazil-Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, It-

aly and the United States-Puerto Rico. In this year two meetings of young adults of America, Africa and Europe will take place.

2019, General House of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, Slovakia, Indonesia, Central América and the Caribbean, India, Emmaus (Aragon, Vasconia, Andalusia) and Hungary.

2020, Central Africa Central, Catalonia, Nazareth, Argentina, Poland, General House of Veracruz and the General Houses of Rome. In this year, the meeting with young adults of Asia will take place.

2016-2021 PLANNING –48– General Congregation of the Pious Schools

CALASANCTIAN JUBILEE YEAR

The General Congregation has already announced nearly all the key dates of the Calasanctian Jubilee Year. Some are still missing, that are very important because they are not subject to the General Congre-gation but to the Holy See.

These are the key dates to take into account:a. Opening and Closing. The Calasanctian Jubilee Year will be solemnly inaugurated on November 27,

2016 in our church of St. Pantaleon of Rome, with a Eucharist presided over by His Eminence Joao Braz, cardinal of Aviz, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. In that celebration the Bull of Indiction of the Jubilee Year, issued by the Holy See, will be read. To all those participating in the Eucharist or following it through the communications media, the Holy Father Francis grants the plenary indulgence according to the rules of the Church. The Jubilee Year will close on November 25, 2017, with the Eucharistic celebration in Saint Panta-leon, presided over by Fr. General.

b. January 31: anniversary of the approval of the Constitutions written by Saint Joseph Calasanz; cel-ebration of the Thanksgiving Day for our Vocation.

c. February 6: memory of Saint Dorothy martyr; we convene a Renewal Day of our Christian Education Ministry. This extraordinary story started in the sacristy of the church of Saint Dorothy, in 1597. We invite everybody to renew in this day our Christian Education Ministry.

d. March 6: anniversary of the erection of the Pauline Congregation, and the Central Day of the Jubilee Year. We invite all the piarist religious to the solemn renovation of vows in the context of piarist presence. Similarly, we invite all the members of the Piarist Fraternity to renew in this day their promises, in the context of a joyful and shared Eucharist.

e. March 25: anniversary of the Vestition of the first piarists; we convene a Day of Prayer for the novices of the Order. Our prayer for them will be inspired by the Constitutions, asking the Lord that each one be able to respond sincerely and generously to His call 2.

f. April 2: as usual, celebration of the Day of the Piarist Missions. It will be great if we dedicate that day to a prayerful reflection on the missionary spirit of the Pious Schools and for all those who assume with missionary availability the fact of being sent to the new presences of the Order.

g. April 15: anniversary of the new Constitutions of the Order, renewed according to Vatican II guide-lines. We wish to commemorate in this date a Day of discernment on the keys of renewal of the Pious Schools.

h. May 8: celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God of the Pious Schools. We ask that in all the piarist presences we renew the consecration of the Pious Schools to Mary.

i. May 31: anniversary of the declaration of Glicerio Landriani as Venerable, and the Day of Prayer for the Piarist Vocations. We wish that in all our communities and works we gather to ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers to his harvest.

j. July 8: Day of the Households, that we wish to live as a Day of care for the poor children, treasure

2 Constitutions of the Pious Schools nº 104

of the Order. We convene all of you to renew in this day our ministry of care for the poor for social transformation.

k. July 16: 250th anniversary of the canonization of Saint Joseph Calasanz, Day of Prayer for the gift of sanctity in the Pious Schools.

l. August 25: Solemnity of Saint Joseph Calasanz. Let us celebrate our holy Father with deep joy.

m. September 26: we usually celebrate the Day of Prayer for the piarist youth in Initial Formation. Let’s do it also in this Jubilee Year, thanking God for so many young people who are preparing to deliver their lives as religious in the Pious Schools.

Let us commend all these plans and decisions to the goodness of God, so that everything results for his greater glory and the neighbor’s benefit. With a fraternal embrace

Fr. Francesc Mulet Sch.P. Fr. Pedro Aguado Sch.P.General Secretary Father General
