Interesting Facts About Our Agriculture Industry

The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is home to over 500 different farms. Farm cash receipts were estimated to be $126.7 million in 2014.

Value of vegetable production in 2014 was $5.4 million. The top two crops were potatoes ($1.5 million) and turnips/rutabagas ($1.2 million).

The top five vegetable crops in 2014 were potatoes, turnip/rutabagas, carrots, cabbage and beets. They accounted for 79 per cent of all vegetable sales.

Farm Cash Receipts for fruit production rose 2.9 per cent in 2014 to $1 million.

There are 240 acres of cranberries in production and 50 more in various stag-es of development. It is anticipated that an additional 175 acres will be developed over the next four years, bringing the provincial total to 465 acres.

Greenhouse and nursery accounted for over 10 per cent of crop sales in 2014. The province has five commercial apiculture (beekeeping) operations with more than 50 hives; over 50 small scale independent operations are located throughout the island.

There are at least 75 different species of native bees, including bumblebees, in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Newfoundland and Labrador is the last remaining location that has not been affected by bee diseases and mites with associated colony collapse.

The value of eggs in 2014 was $16.5 million. Egg production wastrending upwards and peaked in 2011 at 9.5 million dozen.

The Forestry and Agrifoods Agency estimates the value of chicken production in the province is $30 million.

Interesting Facts About Our Agriculture Industry There are 11,300 dairy and beef cattle in the province.

The value of milk production in 2014 was $45.9 million.

There are 12 mink farms with 67,000 breeding mink. The value of fur pelts in 2014 was $12.3 million. Fur is the fourth largest commodity behind dairy, chicken and eggs.

Sheep Producers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (SPANL) has approximately 80 members making it one of the largest commodity groups in the province.

There are approximately 3,500 breeding sheep with room for expansion and secondary processing.

Currently there are three producers certified in CanadaGAP (a national food safety program).

There are 19 provincially licensed abattoirs with 14 capable of processing red meat and five capable of processing white meat.

Food safety is ongoing and continually being advanced, with the last CanadaGAP certification given in 2015 and the latest provincial abattoir licensed in 2014.

The Provincial Agricultural Research and Development Program is a provincially funded program totaling $1 million annually.

With 10 projects approved in 2014-15, Provincial Government scientists are currently investigating opportunities to improve on-farm competitiveness and profitability, research the production practices of crops and livestock, increase industry diversification, research potential economic and health threats related to the province’s agricultural industry and enhance environmental sustainability.
