Microfiche

The following counties are missing from our series of irreplaceable Townland Mapsfor Ireland compiled by Derry Youth & Community workshop and Inner City Trust;

The return of these items may well have been overlooked and now we wouldwelcome their return to the Library no questions asked. Please do take a momentto check your family history corner.

NZSG GenGuides are a valuable resource

GENGUIDES (Genealogical Guides) were developed in the 1990s as a series ofbooklets designed to inform Society members. They supported Anne Bromell'sexcellent books by providing a deeper and more detailed range of resources. Designed as selfstudy guides, the reader was enabled to undertake research usingthe records/resources described with confidence.

GENGUIDES, currently available as PDF downloads on the website in theMember's Area, were the topic of a recent Council meeting. Roger Washbourn hasbeen coordinating the review and revision of the guides. Barbara Wyley assisted asthe final editor and Roger Shearer, as Webmaster, set up the webpage. Roger hasaccommodated periodic requests for additions and alterations.

Council would like to express sincere thanks to Roger and Barbara as well as thefollowing members for assisting with this major project Paul Alpe, Elaine Bell, John Berntsen, Kathy Bisman, Heather Bray, Geoff GENGUIDE 2 Land Research

Library Closed for AGM

To enable all our Library volunteer members to particate in the Annual General Meeting being held on 4th and 5th June2016 in Mt Maunganui, the NZSG Library will be closed on the Saturday 4th June.

Volunteers will be available to assist you in the Library on Monday 6th June 2016.

Policies and Procedures Manual UpdatedCouncil has approved an updated Policies and Procedures Manual which is nowavailable on the website (www.genealogy.org.nz > Log in > Members Area > SocietyAdmin Page) in pdf form as the primary point of reference. Having the manual on thewebsite means it is easily and readily updated at short notice when changes aremade – a new pdf simply replaces the old one.

Council, Branches and Interest Groups and members can print the entire documentthemselves, or just the necessary pages as they see fit.

There are still some policies under review and others to be compiled and these willbe added once finalised. The manual is a living document.

In updating the manual we have opted for simplicity:

sections containing related material all in the one place, whether it is policyor procedure;discontinued the previous practice of sequential numbering. Instead thecontent of each subject is numbered independently so that additionalsubjects can be added where appropriate without having to renumber theremainder of the manual only page numbers would change;where individual contents referred to multiple approval and amendmentdates, these now show only the most recent date.

Births Deaths & Marriages NZ did you know?Births Deaths & Marriages Online (BDMonline) is a handy resource and is utilised by many.

When searching the Deaths site you will have observed a column entitled 'Age at Death'. It is obvious that Y = Years (80Y),M = Months (9M) and so on. However, when a member recently saw 30N she was stumped for a moment

It turns out that, as the letter M was already assigned to months, the next consonant in the word Minutes was used so N =Minutes!

So, now you know.

Do you belong to the Brightlingsea Anzacs?Brightlingsea is a small coastal town in Essex, England which in 1916 housed theAustralian Military Engineers' Training Depot. Over the next three years hundreds ofAnzacs trained, lived, worked and socialised with the locals. Their arrival anddeparture had a significant impact on the town which remains today.

No less than thirtysix Australian and New Zealand soldiers married a local girl and,as a longterm project, the Brightlingsea Museum is attempting to trace theirdescendants.

To commemorate the centenary of the Anzacs' arrival, the Brightlingsea TownCouncil, in conjunction with the Brightlingsea Museum, is planning a weekend ofspecial events on 1719 June 2016 to honour the nearly 10,000 Anzac who arrivedin 1916 to begin training prior to being sent overseas to fight on the Western Front.

Perhaps you know of someone or are yourself descended from a Brightlingseabride? If so, Anne Berry would like to hear from you. Please email Ann Berry [email protected] or visit www.brightlingseaanzaccentenary.org for moreinformation.
