singing - it was so beautiful When they were going to

save Mulan's dad

“Fabulous place to shop & explore. Great for that "special gift." King City is so lucky to have this GEM, called Sol Treasures!!!”

Request of the Apron Ladies: I am husband ,cook, and artist. I need a man's apron. I would like to see Aprons with cowboy prints. I like Star Wars. Or maybe even one with Salvador Dali images. That would be awesome!

Sol Treasures is an arts center and

gallery in King City founded eight years

ago to make up for arts de-funding in

area schools.

“There was very little to offer in King City

when there were many cuts to the arts

programs across California back to

2008,” Executive Director Betsy Oltmann

says. “Sol Treasures filled that niche.”

“Our children’s theater programs is one

of the few opportunities – and often the

first opportunity – that these children

have to see live theater,” Oltmann says.

The point of all this is not just

entertainment, but building confidence,

teamwork and self-esteem. “There are

some kids who are not athletes or

scholars, but they have talent when it

comes to the arts,” production manager

Barbara Pekema says. “Some kids really

blossom and it helps them feel good

about themselves. As soon as we are

done [with one show], parents ask

when’s the next show so their kids can

get involved again.”

Sol Treasures’ Purpose

Sol Treasures, a nonprofit organization, was named the 2015-2016

Exemplary Nonprofit for Arts and Culture by the Nonprofit Alliance of

Monterey County and recognized as the 2014-2015 Business of the Year by the King City Chamber of Commerce.

Founded in 2008 by Sonia Chapa, Barbara Pekema, and Bruce Graham,

Sol Treasures is governed by a 13-member Board of Directors and served

by part-time professional Executive Director and Program Coordinator.

When art programs are supported and honored, communities flourish

culturally and economically. Sol Treasures provides year-round art

gallery, gift shop, special events, classes, and performances. The result is

better outcomes for our youth, greater community engagement,

increased tourism, and downtown revitalization.

Page 37: 2016 Annual Report & Evaluation Results

37

Supporting Research

Research done by Dr. Shirley Brice Heath of Stanford University

found that young people who participate in the arts for at least three

hours on three days each week through at least one full year are:

4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement

4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair

3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance

4 times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem

Additional advantages of arts education benefit students of low

socio-economic status, which represent about 50% of South

Monterey County students.

Low socio-economic status students with high arts participation are

more than twice as likely to graduate from high school, earn an AA,

or earn a bachelor’s degree.
