A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR DearChaddickFriends,

WithmanyChicagoneighborhoodsandinner-ringsuburbsgrapplingwithchronicunemploymentand

diminishedpublicconfidenceingovernmentinstitutions,theimportanceofourworkattheChaddick

InstituteforMetropolitanDevelopmentcameintosharpfocusin2016.Infact,Idon’trecallatimeinmy

tenureasdirectoroftheInstituteinwhichourworkhasbeenascriticalasithasbeenoverthispast

year.WelaunchedajournalincooperationwiththeIllinoisMunicipalLeaguetobetterinformpolicy

decision-making,supportedplanningeffortsforseveralalderman’sofficesandregionalagencies,and

undertookstudent-supportedresearchthathasestablishedourInstituteasaprominentvoiceonthe

“sharingeconomy”.

Wewerefortunatethroughout2016tohavesignificantin-housegraphicdesigntalent,firstwithMarisa

SchulzandfollowedbyRachaelSmith.TheirworkishighlightedinournewexhibitatChicagoUnion

Station,entitled“WindyCityinMotion:Movies+TravelinChicago”,whichRachaeldesigned,andthe

“visualrefurbishing”ofourofficereceptionareatoshowcaseoururbanmission.

TheentirestaffworkedovertimetocompletetheinauguralissueoftheIllinoisMunicipalPolicyJournal,

ournewpeer-reviewpublicationcoeditedbyprofessorNickKachiroubas,mycolleagueintheSchoolof

PublicService,withextensivesupportfromDanaYanocha.The“IMPJ”featuresarticlesontimely

municipalpolicyissueswrittenbyscholarsfromDePaul,JohnMarshallUniversity,UniversityofIllinois-

Chicago,NorthernIllinoisUniversity,andIllinoisInstituteofTechnology,amongothers.

Notable“firsts”from2016includeaLeadershipAwardinhonorofCamilleHatzenbuehlerbestowed

uponthreeemergingleadersintheSchoolofPublicService,andaTempletonFoundationgrantin

supportofstudent-orientedprogrammingfocusedonurbaninnovation.Wealsoliftedaglassat“Pub

Night”topromotefellowshipamongstudents,alumni,andfaculty,andcontinuedourlongstanding

educationalpartnershipswiththeAmericanPlanningAssociationandChicagoMetropolitanAgencyfor

Planning.Ourcross-collegecollaborationswiththeDePaulRealEstateCenterandInternationalAviation

LawInstitute,bothofwhichinvolvewidely-attendedannualsymposia,alsocontinuetoblossom.

Perhapsmostimportantly,theChaddickInstituteofferedmorethan100graduatestudentsvaluable

experiencesthroughprofessionalengagement,researchinvolvement,andstimulatingtravel

opportunitiesoverthepastyear–allofwhichwasmadepossibleduetogenerousfinancialsupport

fromtheChaddickFoundation,in-kindsupportfromDePaulUniversity’sCollegeofLiberalArts&Social

Sciences,andmanyotherbenefactors.

In2017,wewillcontinuetobuildonourlegacyofstrongresearch,meaningfulprofessionalandstudent

engagement,andconstantcuriosityaboutmetropolitandevelopmentissues.

INSTITUTE STAFF JoeSchwieterman,thedirectoroftheInstitute,overseesourprogramsincooperationwiththeassociatedirectorandleadsourresearchseries.ThisJune,ourAssociateDirectorMarisaSchulzjoinedtheLakotaGroup,aplanninganddesignfirm.Wealreadymissherpassionanddedication,butwishherthebestofluckinhernewrole!ScottSmithwillbejoiningourteaminFebruaryasthenewAssistantDirector;helooksforwardtojoiningtheChaddickInstituteteam.Asfacultyadvisor,ProfessorNickKachiroubasorganizesmunicipal-themedstudenttripstoCrystalLakeandSpringfieldandservesasthemanagingeditoroftheIllinoisMunicipalPolicyJournal.Ourprogrammanager,RachaelSmith,hascoordinatedanumberofsuccessfuleventssinceshestartedwiththeInstituteinMarch2016.Rachaelalsodesignsourmanyreportsandcommunications,andoverseesdailyadministrativetasksfortheInstitute.GraduateAssistantsDanaYanochaandRileyO’NeilhelpexecuteeventlogisticsandworkonanumberofInstituteprojects,includingreportediting,datacollectionandstudentengagement.Weworkedcloselywithourexternaladvisorsandfellows,includingLaurieMarston,AICP,whoheadsupourPlanCommissionTrainingProgram,andJohnHedrick,whosupportsourMunicipalDesignReviewNetwork,LaurenceAudenaerd,whosupportsourtransportationprograms,andSusanAaron,whosupportedourleadershipawardprograminhonorofCamilleHatzenbuehler.TheInstitutealsoreliesheavilyontheinvolvementandsupportofDePaulfaculty,includingEuanHague,HowardRosing,andRobertStokes.

RESEARCH & CREATIVE ACTIVITY OurInstitutebringsattentiontotimelypolicyissuesthatareimportanttoimprovingtheperformanceofmetropolitanregions.Eachyear,ourresearchteamissuesthreeorfourmajorstudies,allofwhicharetheproductofextensivegraduatestudentinvolvement.Severalofourstudiesoverthepastyearreceivednationalattention,asnotedinthe“ChaddickintheNews”sectionthatfollows.AnotherwaywehavebroughturbanplanningandtransportationissuestotheattentionofawidevarietyofpeopleisthroughourexhibitatChicago’sUnionStation.ThismultimediaexhibitexploresChicago’shistoryasatransportationhubthroughthelensofmoviesandphotographsthatfeatureourtrains,planesandstations.TheexhibitwascuratedbyDePaulgraduatestudentandChaddickstafferRachaelSmithandhasbeenondisplayinthegreathallsinceAugust2016.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES & OPPORTUNITIES ManyofourprogramsarecenteredonengagingDePaul’stalentedstudentbodyineventsandnetworkingopportunities.Studentstakepartinourtwice-annualovernightstudytrips,professionaloutingswiththeSchoolofPublicService(SPS)andon-campusprograms.OurstaffworkscloselywiththeeightorninestudentseachyearwhocompleteourimmersiveChaddickScholarsprogram,whichrequiresintensiveparticipationwithourinstitute.
