Annual Report September 1, 2015 - August 31, 2016

A Letter from the Board President

I came to A Place to Be (APTB) in 2011 as a terrified mother, desperate to hold on to our youngest son, Forrest, who had suffered a catastrophic brain injury. As Forrest slowly and miraculously began to reclaim his life, in large part through the power of music therapy, I began to awaken to the many other miracles taking place around

us. In addition to incredibly skilled dedicated therapists, we found a welcoming, compassionate, and supportive community at A Place To Be (APTB).

Now, almost six years later, Forrest has healed as has my mother’s heart, and I find myself President of APTB’s Board of Directors. Every day I am awestruck by the magic that takes place at APTB. Voices emerge from silence, hearts are opened, hands reach out, lives are literally saved, pathways forward are found, and profound music is made. Now more than ever it seems our world cries out for kindness, connection, empathy, courage, authenticity, and purpose. This is the magical stuff that APTB is made of.

In the past fiscal year alone (September 2015- August 2016), the APTB magic has grown and spread its wings exponentially. Through our signature touring program, “The Same Sky Project,” the show Behind the Label reached over 15,000 students this year alone with its life changing message of empathy, kindness and acceptance. The program is so unique and powerful that the Behind the Label cast was invited to travel to Kansas City in November 2015 to perform for more than 2,000 music therapists at the National American Music Therapy Association conference. In May 2016, the Behind the Label cast was honored to perform as the keynote opening presentation at the National Institutes of Health’s Rehabilitation Medicine Conference, inspiring hundreds of therapists, doctors, and scientists!

The demand for individual therapy sessions, the Immersion program, social therapeutic groups and camps (highlighted in this report) soared and we quickly outgrew APTB’s original home on Madison Street. In January 2016, we opened the doors of our current home at 8 Jay Street in Middleburg, VA. Filled with light, space, joyful music, and complete with multiple treatment rooms and TWO ADA bathrooms, we now wonder how did we manage before? We also expanded our services two days a week into INOVA hospitals providing the healing power of medical music therapy in ICU, pediatrics, oncology, palliative care, stroke, and COPD units.

During 2015-2016, we grew 40%, serving over 250 clients, providing financial aid to 28 families, and sharing our message through 37 public performances for our surrounding communities. We accomplished this with 7 therapists, 5 part-time program support staff, and 3 part-time administrative staff.

All of this magic is hard to imagine and harder still to create and sustain. We could not do it without the generosity and faith of our many donors and volunteers. We are grateful beyond words for your support. With your continued generosity, even more miracles of hope, faith, and healing will touch lives with the transformative power of the therapeutic arts.

With a grateful heart,

Dr. Rae Stone, DVMPresident & PartnerQuest Global Management, LLC.Dolphin Quest, Inc.

MISSION STATEMENTHelping people face, navigate, and overcome life's challenges using the therapeutic arts.

VISION STATEMENTWe strive to be a leading, influential Therapeutic Arts organization with the heartbeat of

operations located in Middleburg, VA. We are leaders in the field of "Performance Based Music Therapy" and in inclusionary programming whereby all participants are seen as equal and valuable

with their unique gifts and challenges. In addition to our therapeutic services, our products, workshops and touring ensembles serve as tools for outreach, education, and inspiration.

In our world today there is great need for healing of mental, physical, and emotional health issues. A Place To Be is situated at the intersection of these issues serving as a community leader, conversation starter, safe place, and model to promote our vision where all human beings hold value and are deserving of help and support. Our work is clinical in nature, but our approach to every interaction begins with kindness, empathy and compassion. Each person who enters our doors is seen as a whole person whether they’ve been diagnosed with a disability or illness, or whether they are simply someone in need of a haven for connection and understanding. We believe that every person has something to offer and every person will at some time in their life, be in need of support. It is this philosophy that lives at the foundation of all our programs - from summer camps to social groups, private sessions to performances. We are honored to go on this journey with the families we serve and with all of you helping to form this incredible community. Thanks to the extreme generosity of our donors, volunteers, Board of Directors and staff, we continue to strive to make the magic of A Place To Be sustainable for all who are in need for many years to come.  With gratitude and excitement for the future,

Kim Tapper and Tom Sweitzer

A Letter from the Co-Founders/Executive DirectorsWhen we founded A Place To Be our intention was to build a company that would unite people through their differences, provide significant therapeutic help to individuals with a wide array of challenges, and offer hope, empathy and inspiration using the therapeutic arts. We began with approximately 20

clients. Seven years later APTB is thriving, growing into a leading therapeutic arts organization currently serving hundreds of families per week

in clinical sessions and reaching thousands of youth and community audiences through our outreach performances.

At the core of the clinical work at A Place To Be is Music Therapy. In 2015-2016, the Music Therapy and Expressive Arts staff served approximately 250 clients each week, through individual sessions and

group Music Therapy experiences. A growing team of Music Therapists made the ability to serve a broader population possible with Ray Leone supervising the Medical Music Therapy programs at INOVA Hospitals and Ashley Jewell heading our robust intern program. Inside all Music Therapy

sessions there is extensive and intensive work being done to reach a client's health goals and objectives. Through A Place To Be's unique Performance Based Model, almost every Music Therapy client performs in one of our recitals or productions, serving as a catalyst for their therapeutic goals.

LUNCH BUNCHThe Lunch Bunch program expanded to 3 days a week serving adults with

developmental, intellectual, and physical challenges from MVLE (Springfield; Chantilly) and Fauquier Bridges (Warrenton). Community volunteers and Immersion Program participants joined with clients to shared laughter,

friendship, the arts, and of course lunch! Participants improved in areas of speech, communication, confidence, self-advocacy, partnership, patience,

self-awareness, and socialization. For all involved from volunteers to participants, Lunch Bunch was the highlight of their week.

THE SEVEN CORE PROGRAMS OF A PLACE TO BE

SOCIAL THERAPEUTIC GROUPSWe had 5 weekly Social Therapeutic Groups that help individuals reach their personal goals while working on social skills, communication, psychosocial

development and learning about themselves and others.

THE IMMERSION PROGRAMThe Immersion Program, our alternative therapeutic day program, served 30 diverse youth ages 14-22 and increased confidence, communication

skills, flexibility and focus, psychosocial development, and friendships. In the fall of 2015, the Immersion Program also partnered with Wakefield

School students to create socialization and learning opportunities across perceived differences.

6

THE SEVEN CORE PROGRAMS OF A PLACE TO BE

SUMMER CAMPSDuring the summer of 2016, APTB continued its magic with another original smash hit musical theater production, "Encore!" boasting a cast of 50 young people ages 10-25.  “Pop Rocks”, the music camp where anyone can learn to be a rock star, expanded with a second week which also became our first ever camp in LEESBURG!  Downtown Leesburg was alive with 20 young rockstars raising the roof with their music!   At the “Pop Rocks” camp in Middleburg (at Hill School), volunteer extraordinaire Jason Price helped transform the camp into a live Recording Studio where the cast created and recorded an original song and music video!

The Same Sky Project is the umbrella term encompassing our national touring

theatrical productions that raise awareness and teach empathy and acceptance. The

Same Sky Project has been seen by approximately 25,000 people, mostly middle and

high school students, to date.

A WILL TO SURVIVE William Robinson took his life at age 17 on January 14, 2016. Will lived in Loudoun County, Virginia and loved music, people and being curious about life. He left behind many friends and family members who were moved to help spread the word of Love and that it's never too late to reach out. A Place To Be responded by creating a rock opera, A WILL to Survive, which began touring in the fall of 2016.

BEHIND THE LABELExplains what it’s like to live with various challenges including Autism, Down Syndrome, ADD, Anxiety, Cerebral Palsy, Depression, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Heart conditions, Dyslexia, and many other medical and life challenges. The goal of the show is to help teach people to see beyond diagnosis, beyond labels, and into human beings.

In November 2015: Keynote opening performance at the National American Music Therapy Association Conference in Kansas City, MO.

In May 2016: Opening performance at the National Institutes of Health’s Conference on Medical Rehabilitation.
