2016 annual report - the cycle...
TRANSCRIPT
Dear Donors, Supporters, Family and Friends, We are writing to you with gratitude for everything that you have helped us achieve this past year. Your help and generosity has allowed us to truly help our young people make amazing strides towards healthier and more positive futures.
With our continued progress financially and creating a strong, passionate board of directors and staff, we have been able to work with more young women than ever before. Just as exciting, we are set up for our programming to grow by over 25% in 2017 to impact more lives throughout our communities. We are able to use our growing resources and experience to make the right choice for each one of our participants. Our families and their daughters are the fabric of our community and we are thrilled to serve them in such a life-changing way. These young women will grow to be our valley’s business owners, leaders, and passionate community members. Thank you again for your generous support and we look forward to creating great things with you in 2017 and beyond!

Our Strategies We provide young female students in middle and high school with activities to keep them engaged and interested in education. Our program requires participants to be in school and achieve a specific educational result.
We create a positive physical and social experience, and an outlet for individual expression and challenge.
We develop important life skills, including goal setting, overcoming obstacles, time management, decision-making, and living a healthy lifestyle.
We strive to build self-esteem, instill a higher level of self-confidence, and create a sense of community through team sports and competition.
We play a significant role in ensuring that our girls successfully complete high school and move on to higher education.
The Cycle Effect’s mission is empowering young women through mountain biking to create brighter futures and build stronger communities.
What We Do The Cycle Effect provides an opportunity for young women to participate in mountain biking as a sport and team competition. Our program athletes are applicants from the local community who would not normally have the ability to participate in this sport due to economic and family circumstances.
Through our coaching activities, we teach time management, nutrition, physical fitness and stress management.
Our team members are required to complete 25 hours of community service per year, teaching them the value of giving back and partnering with other non-profit agencies in their community.
How We Do It In January we begin indoor fitness training and nutritional instruction with our athletes.
In April, we begin riding bikes outside and coaching our girls in mountain biking skills, teamwork, visualization and goal setting.
In May our athletes begin competing in the Vail Recreation District Mountain Bike Race Series and the Summit Mountain Challenge Race Series.
In the Fall our girls train with and race for the local high school team.
Our impact is immeasurable. The changes we make to individual lives and all the people influenced as a result cannot be quantified. Instead, we track our results in terms of participants who receive the benefits of our programs. The impact to individuals, families and our communities extends beyond each year in time, and will be experienced throughout generations to come.
In 2015 we included more than 70 young women in our programs in Eagle and Summit Counties. Specifically, we provided the following:
• Worked with 72 middle and high school girls • Summit County – 24 girls participated in programming • Eagle County – 48 girls participated in programming
• Offered 80 programming days per participant; 65 training and 15 racing days • Coordinated more than 1000 volunteer hours provided to local organizations by our
program participants • Continue to have 100% of our program graduates move on to higher education
Our programs change lives. Each year we provide young women with life coaching and training which helps keep them focused on completing high school while they develop the important skills needed to build a brighter future. We are proud to say that 100% of our program graduates received their high school diplomas and attended college and 80% of them are the first in there family to do so.
What We Have Achieved
“As a Mexican girl, I am supposed to be the second mom, help with my brothers and sisters, get married and have babies. I told my mom and dad that I wanted more than that out of my life. There is nothing wrong with that way of life for those who choose it, but it is not for me. I want to accomplish something on my own and I feel like I’m doing that through The Cycle Effect. Now, my little sister can’t wait to join the team. That makes me so proud!”

Our Impact
“One of my coaches told me that he was proud of me and that’s the first
time I’ve ever heard that in my life.
I hope one day my family will get
to come watch me race and see what I do and they’ll tell me they’re
proud of me, too.”

“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate
women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I
see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.”
