Year in ReviewFiscal year 2015/2016 was another success for Weld Food Bank. Through our seven direct-service programs and with the help of 94 nonprofit agency partners, we distributed 11.9 million pounds of food. Of that, 6.4 million was fresh produce, dairy and meat. The fact that over half the food we gave to struggling families was healthy, perishable items did not happen by chance. It is our continued goal to ensure that we provide the most nutritious foods possible to help children grow strong, families succeed and seniors remain healthy.

Our direct-service programs played a major role in getting perishable foods to the largest amount of people possible. The Mobile Food Pantry distributed 2.1 million pounds of food on a regular basis in 13 communities throughout Weld County. This program is vital to our efforts in reaching more people in our large rural county. We added a site in Mead this year that has grown exponentially. Local leaders in that community have expressed how grateful hungry residents are to have access to perishable foods that were not previously an option. Overall, the reason why the Mobile Food Pantry was successful is largely due to the support of local businesses. We are grateful for JBS USA, LLC, NCMC Foundation, Extraction Oil & Gas, Platte Valley Medical Center, Anadarko Petroleum, City of Dacono, Union Pacific Railroad, Windsor Community Foundation and BNSF Railway. Each of these businesses makes a huge impact in the work we do and in the communities we serve with the mobile food pantry.

Our child feeding programs also helped get healthy perishables to those in need. Collectively, Kids Cafe and

Summer Feeding served 97,061 meals and snacks to children who may otherwise not have enough to eat. The need is always higher in the summer when school meals are inaccessible, and that is reflected in how many meals we prepared. Nearly 40 percent of all our child feeding meals went out in the 12 weeks of summer. No matter the time of year, when a child receives a meal from our kitchen, we ensure that it is packed with nutrition to strengthen their growing bodies and minds.

Along with our commitment to getting food to our struggling neighbors, we are also committed to taking care of our financial donors. We want to remain transparent and accountable to those who trust us with their gifts. This year, Charity Navigator — America’s leading independent charity evaluator — updated their rating system to create a stricter method of evaluating charities in America. Of the over 8,000 charities ranked by this organization, only a handful received perfect scores of 100. Weld Food Bank was one of those organizations. We pride ourselves in being good stewards of our donors’ money with 98.2% of each dollar going to help feed hungry people last year.

Every year on average, we serve 51,000 people. To successfully reach every single person takes more than just our amazing staff. Without our dedicated donors, volunteers and Board of Directors it would be impossible. We thank all of our supporters for standing by us this year and for being partners in the fight against hunger in Weld County.

Weld Food Bank ProgramsEmergency Food BoxesWe understand that many people are fighting hunger at home, so we provide needy residents of Weld County an Emergency Food Box. The EFB is a box of basic food staples meant to serve a family of four for three days. The box is available to any resident of Weld County who needs help during a difficult time. Once they have been certified, families get a box of shelf stable food items and then get to pick and choose from the perishable foods we have available. Last year, we distributed 32,743 Emergency Food Boxes to hungry families in Weld County!

Mobile Food PantryDespite the fact that Weld Food Bank serves 94 hunger-relief member agencies, there remain areas of high need in the county. One way we address this need is through our Mobile Food Pantry. The pantry is a refrigerated beverage truck used to deliver fresh produce, dairy products, meat, bakery and dry goods directly to hungry people. When the truck arrives at a site, volunteers help set up the food on tables so clients are able to choose the items they need. This past year, our Mobile Food Pantry distributed 2.1 million pounds of food to sites in Hudson, Dacono, Ft. Lupton, Frederick, Keenesburg, Lochbuie, Greeley, Kersey, Milliken, Gilcrest, Pierce, Mead and Windsor.

Senior Outreach ProgramThe Senior Outreach Program is designed to serve seniors over 60 years of age. The program ensures that seniors, who are some of the most vulnerable to hunger, get the basic nutrition necessary for good health. Recipients must be certified by our staff, and once approved, they can receive food every month. Seniors who are certified come straight to our warehouse, get the shelf stable food items and then choose from the donated perishable items we have available. Last year, we distributed 30,205 nutritional food packages to seniors throughout Weld County.

Non-Profit Agency PartnersOur goal at Weld Food Bank is to serve all of Weld County. But to do that, we need to work closely with partners throughout those 4,000 square miles. Last year, the food bank worked with 94 different non-profit agencies, saving them nearly $1.9 million in food costs, and helping to fight hunger in our county. Agencies get food directly from the food bank by placing large scale orders. They can either come to the food bank to pick up those orders or we take the food to them in one of our temperature controlled trucks. Our agency partners include food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, residential treatment centers and senior and youth programs. They serve all ages and segments of our community. The food provided to those living with hunger often means the difference between feeding their families or going hungry, having hope or living in despair.

Kids CafeKids Cafe is an afterschool program where we provide nutritional, prepared meals and snacks for undernourished children. We work with programs such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Weld County to identify hungry kids who might otherwise not get dinner. Our trained Chef prepares nutritious meals in our commercial kitchen, and the hot meals can be transported to the children by our truck drivers. Last year, we were able to serve 59,575 meals to children.

Backpack ProgramThe Backpack Program provides food for children who are at risk for hunger over the weekend. Weld Food Bank works with school counselors and teachers to identify the over 1,000 kids who are homeless or who are in great need throughout Weld County. Volunteers at Weld Food Bank fill the packs with child-friendly food including shelf stable milk, juice, a high protein meal and three or four snacks. We then drop the packs at schools and the children take them home every Friday. This past year, with the help of our agency partners, we distributed 22,114 backpacks in Greeley, Evans, Windsor, Fort Lupton, Milliken, Hudson, Lochbuie, Keenesburg, Platteville, Gilcrest, Dacono, Frederick, Firestone and LaSalle.

Summer FeedingWeld Food Bank also works to feed children over the summer months when they do not have access to free and reduced school breakfast and lunch. We do that through our Summer Feeding program where we work with communities throughout Weld County to identify areas where kids in need come together and we bring them a hot lunch. Lunches are prepared in our commercial kitchen and are kept hot and distributed with our trucks. Last summer, we were able to serve 37,486 meals to kids throughout Greeley, Milliken, Johnstown, Eaton, LaSalle, Platteville, Dacono, Firestone and Kersey.

School Food PantriesThrough our School Food Pantry, we partner with schools throughout Weld County who have high numbers of hungry students and we provide them with food to start their own pantry. The food is available not only to provide breakfast if a child comes to school hungry, but also for hungry families to take when they pick a child up from school. We currently have nine pantries in Milliken, Fort Lupton, Frederick, Mead, Platteville, Gilcrest, Windsor, LaSalle and Kersey. Last year, the School Food Pantry program was accessed 5,995 times.
