By no means will Heritage Fund be able to address all the opportunities and fix all the challenges. But with the help of generous and compassionate individuals like you, we can be strategic about how we use our resources and will be able to make a positive impact in our wonderful community. Stay tuned for informa-tion about how you can support local nonprofits and give back this holiday season with the 2016 Grant A Wish Pro-gram! GRANT A WISH

The Heritage Fund Board of Directors held a retreat in Febru-ary of this year. During the retreat, two common objectives

became clear. First, the Board really wants to know what the problems and opportunities are in Bartholomew County. Second, they want to be a catalyst for bringing about positive change in those areas.

With that clear focus, we set about reviewing our processes, policies and procedures to determine how we could better respond to both Board objectives.

Our answer to the first question about clearly identifying problems and opportunities was to bring in a panel of com-munity experts representing various segments of the com-munity (health care, economic development, social services, government and the arts). This Outreach Committee, led by Tobi Herron, director of Community and Employee Involve-ment at Faurecia, is tasked with developing a community impact scan for the Board of Directors.

It is tough work to develop a community impact scan. There are many challenges and many opportunities, and unfortu-nately, limited resources to apply to the many community

problems and opportunities identified by the committee. To help prioritize our focus, the committee developed a set of impact filters to help narrow the list to those issues where Heritage Fund can make a substantial difference.

The first draft of this work was presented to the Board in August. Great suggestions were made, and a more detailed community impact scan will come forward for approval in November. We intend to use the community impact scan to drive a community investment grant program and proposals.

We hope that the scan will be something that we can share with donors so that they, too, can better understand the chal-lenges in our community and use that data to drive their own philanthropic donation decisions.

By no means will Heritage Fund be able to address all the opportunities and fix all the challenges. But with the help of generous and compassionate individuals like you, we can be strategic about how we use our resources and will be able to make a positive impact in our wonderful community.

MEMORIALS AND HONORS March 19, 2016 — August 23, 2016

From joining a foreign language study in France to experiencing an ocean science class in Florida, high school students are benefiting from a group of alumni’s vision of “paying it forward.”

John Head, Paul Nolting and Del Newkirk — among the founding members of the Columbus High School Classes of 1957 and 1958 Endow-ment — joined several Columbus East High School students for a lunchtime chat to hear firsthand some of the ways the fund is helping today’s students.

“The talent you have right here ... there is all spectrum of needs of how we can help students,” Head, of Center Grove, said. “A little bit of money can make a big difference. It’s amazing where the funds go.”

Students shared the variety of ways the endow-ment — which provides funding at the discretion

of the school principals to assist Columbus East and North students — has been of help to them, includ-ing support to participate in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America events, a Fall Sea

Camp and an IU Honors Program study abroad. Nolting said establishing the endowment was a

“no-brainer.”“We’re paying this forward,” the Columbus resi-

dent said. “As we go forward, a lot of us have seen the needs for more help.”

Just as 1958 alumni joined with the preced-ing class’ efforts, the three men hope more local graduates will be inspired to do the same.

“It’s a powerful thing the way a little bit of money can grow over time,” Newkirk, of Blooming-ton, reflected.

“We hope,” Head said to the group of students, “there will be a day when you guys can do the same thing.”To contribute to the Columbus High School Classes of 1957 and 1958 Endowment Fund, or for more information on es-tablishing a fund, contact Heritage Fund at 812-376-7772.
