The Long Beach Flute Institute is pleased to announcethe thirteenth annual Summer Flute Camp. This five dayworkshop is dedicated to educating and inspiring youngmusicians. LBFI combines an informational, comfortable,and supportive atmosphere with teaching, performances,and faculty from the areas finest universities andorchestras.The daily schedule includes: masterclass, chamber music,flute choir and recitals. Daily topics include breathing, tone,articulation, intonation, vibrato, technique, stage presence,practice habits, Body Mapping, performance tips, ensembleplaying, working with an accompanist and much more!

The Adult Flute Workshop celebrates its tenth year with an exciting line up of events and new guest artist, JenniOlson. Take this opportunity to play and learn with otheradult amateurs, meet new flute-playing friends, and further develop your flute playing skills. Flutists of alllevels will enjoy warm ups, masterclasses and chamber music with Jenni Olson and Micah Layne, and perform with the camp flute choir at the Camp Finale Concert. The LBFI Adult Flute Workshop was created to give adult amateurs a low stress, informal, and supportive environ-ment to improve their playing skills.

LBFI Adult Workshop

Micah Layneis regarded as one of the talented young educators of his gen-eration. He specializes in practice methods and training youngflutists utilizing new technologies and alternative teachingmethods. As an artist who fervently believes in the value of music education, Mr. Layne has devoted much of his time to teaching as a flute instructor with Youth Orchestra Los Angeles. In 2013, Micah joined Boyle Heights Community Youth Orchestra as conductor and teacher to foster a true musical outlet for the community. He not only teaches all of the wind instrument students, but he also arranges the music and conducts the orchestra. Mr. Layne has music degrees from University of Tennessee School of Music and CSULB Cole Conservatory of Music.

Darrin Thavesis the Principal Flutist of the Northwest Sinfonietta andInstructor of Flute at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at CSULB. Director of the Pacific Flute Ensemble, he is also the competition coordinator for CSULB’s Annual Flute Comp-etitions. Darrin will conduct the National High School FluteChoir at the NFA Convention in San Diego. Mr. Thaves is an honors graduate from the University of Puget Sound (B.M.) and CSULB (M.M.). He was also the winner of the 2000 Seattle Ladies Musical Club Young Artist Competition as well as numerous NFA Competitions. For more information, visit: www.darrinthaves.com

Guest Artists: Renée Bhatiais the Instrumental Music Director at Milikan High School in Long Beach and the assistant conductor of the Pacific Flute Ensemble. She is a graduate of the CSULB Bob Cole Con-servatory and has her graduate degree in conducting from San Houston State’s American Band College. Apart from her full-time music director position, Ms. Batia is an active free-lance flute player in Los Angeles and Orange County. She is a winner of the 2008 Ladies Music Club Competition and Principle Flute of the 2012 National Flute Association Flute Choir.

Opera and Pacific Symphony. She teaches flute at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. As a studio musician Jenni can be heard on dozens of soundtracks, commercials and records including recent works such as Star Wars, Ice Age 4, The Lorax, Night at the Museum 2 and Sex in the City 2. Jenni received her BA from California State University, Stanislaus where she studied with Caryl Mae Scott and received her MM and DMA from University of Southern California whereshe studied with Jim Walker. As a solo recording artist Jenni has six albums including two Christmas albums, two standard flute repertoire albums and two chamber albums.

Jenni Olsonis an active orchestral and chamber music performer in the Los Angeles area. She is currently principal flute with the Stockton Symphony and second flute with the Long Beach Symphony and Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra. As a freelance musician, Jenni has performed with prestigiousgroups such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles

The Long Beach Flute Institute (LBFI) was founded in2003 to provide expert, specialized flute instructionin a positive and non-competitive environment to flutists in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.

is a member of the Oakland Symphony, the San FranciscoOpera Center Orchestra, the Oregon Coast Music Festival, as well as Instructor of Flute at the Bob Cole Conservatoryof Music at CSULB. She holds degrees from Wayne StateUniversity (B.M.) and CSULB (M.M.). Previously, Ms. Urso-Trapani was Piccoloist of the New York City Opera National Company and the San Francisco Opera’s Western Opera Theater. She has also played with the Detroit SymphonyOrchestra, Pacific Symphony, American Ballet Theater,Bolshoi Ballet, and Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra.
