The Baltimore Orioles have prioritized community involvement through a variety of programs and initiatives throughout Birdland for more than 60 years. With the goal of enriching the lives of fans in the community, the Orioles have supported many civic and charitable organizations in the Mid-Atlantic region, Sarasota, Fla., and abroad. Since the ownership group led by Peter Angelos purchased the team, the club has donated well over $10 million to support various organizations in the Orioles community. Launched in 2007 under Mr. Angelos’ direction, OriolesREACH centralized the club’s community relations initiatives in an effort to better reach those who are most in need. Through one of its many programs, thousands of children each season, who might otherwise not be able to attend a game, are provided an opportunity to enjoy Orioles baseball at Oriole Park as part of the OriolesREACH Gameday Experience Program, which includes complimentary tickets, transportation, concessions, and souvenirs. This season, the Orioles launched the Birdland Community Heroes program to recognize members of the Birdland community from all walks of life, occupations, and diverse backgrounds living in our region, our country, and abroad, who have distinguished themselves by selflessly working or volunteering in fields that care for, serve, teach, protect, and improve the lives of others, around the corner or around the globe, who are most in need. These efforts also extend to the club’s home in Sarasota, where the Orioles promote healthy habits to middle-school aged children through the Orioles Health & Fitness Challenge, enrich the community by partnering with a variety of nonprofits, and drive meaningful local economic impact.

The Orioles would like to thank each of our community partners and participating fans for helping to put our charitable initiatives into action. With your incredible support, we look forward to continuing to work together to improve many lives in the coming year.

THE ORIOLES CHARITABLE FOUNDATION AND ADAM JONES DONATE $75,000 TO WEBSTER KENDRICK BOYS & GIRLS CLUB IN BALTIMOREThe Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation and Orioles center fielder and Boys & Girls Club alumnus Adam Jones donated $75,000 to the Webster Kendrick Boys & Girls Club for the renovation and expansion of a Technology Center and the Callaway Community School Tech Lab. This is the third Boys & Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore that the Orioles and Jones have renovated along with the Brooklyn O’Malley Boys & Girls Club and the Westport/Winans Homes Boys & Girls Club. The renovations helped to enhance the Club’s ability to provide educational support, computer skill development, career enrichment, and college preparatory and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs to at-risk and underserved members by providing 50 new computers, as well as additional learning technologies.

ADAM JONES

As a Boys & Girls Clubs alumnus, I know firsthand how these programs can impact lives and

really make a difference at a young age. I tell kids all the time – it’s about education. You have to give yourself every opportunity to get a good education so that you can pursue your dreams. Boys & Girls Clubs make that possible and do so much more, enriching the lives of youth all across the country.”

The Orioles collaborated with the National Wildlife Federation, the National Aquarium, and Maryland Stadium Authority to design and install an Oriole Garden at Camden Yards, near the Gate A Eutaw Street entrance. As part of the National Wildlife Federation’s “Grow Together Baltimore” project, this showplace demonstration garden provides vibrant green spaces and an urban wildlife habitat in Baltimore. The mission of “Grow Together Baltimore” is to improve the quality of Baltimore City by creating backyard sanctuaries, beautifying neighborhoods and schools, reducing pollution, and furthering a sense of community.

With its prominent location at Camden Yards and educational signage, the Oriole Garden helps fans learn more about orioles, native plants, and how to create their own backyard wildlife sanctuaries. The garden features 12,000 native plants that attract pollinators and birds that need habitat in urban and suburban areas to survive, including the native Oriole Bird, other local birds, and butterflies. According to the North American Breeding Bird Survey, Baltimore oriole populations have declined because of deforestation and habitat loss. Through the Oriole Garden, the Orioles hope to attract oriole birds each spring, coinciding with the birds’ migratory patterns.

Members of the Orioles On Deck Employee Volunteer program, as well as volunteers from the National Aquarium and National Wildlife Federation, helped to install the garden in May. The Oriole Garden was unveiled on May 26 with representatives from the contributing organizations on hand.

To further showcase the Oriole Garden, National Wildlife Federation’s President and CEO Collin O’Mara threw out a ceremonial first pitch in May, and the Orioles donated tickets to the organization.

MANNY MACHADO’S BASEBOWL TOURNAMENT BENEFITING BALTIMORE CITY DEPARTMENT OF RECREATION AND PARKSManny Machado hosted his third annual BaseBOWL Tournament, a celebrity charity event to support Baltimore City’s Department of Recreation and Parks in May. Nearly all of Machado’s teammates attended including Zach Britton, Chris Davis, Kevin Gausman, Adam Jones, Darren O’Day, Jonathan Schoop, and Chris Tillman, as well as Orioles manager Buck Showalter, several Orioles coaches, and Orioles Legend Cal Ripken, Jr. In support of Machado’s efforts, the Orioles donated $10,000 to Baltimore City Recreation and Parks and hosted participating youth at two games through the OriolesREACH Gameday Experience Program. The children received game tickets, concessions, an Orioles t-shirt and cap, and transportation to and from the game.

In 2016, the Manny Machado BaseBOWL Tournament raised more than $92,000 to support the Baltimore City Recreation Department’s eight-week “Play Baseball” campaign (via the Baltimore City Foundation). The initiative benefited 300 youth, ages 9-12, by supplying baseball equipment, uniforms, transportation, and field refurbishment to play baseball during the summer at Baltimore City Recreation and Parks centers. Representatives from these groups helped collect non-perishable food items and monetary donations from fans at every entrance of the ballpark. The 2016 Food & Funds Drive raised more than $27,000 and collected nearly 3,000 pounds of food for Maryland families. United Concordia also presented a check for $10,000 to the

Maryland Food Bank during a pregame ceremony in September. These monetary donations supported the Maryland Food Bank’s Pack to Give Back event, a state-wide initiative focused on providing meals to families in need for the holidays.

Additionally, Orioles Wives and Orioles On Deck Employee Volunteers visited the Maryland Food Bank to sort and pack food for distribution in May.

KIDSPEACEThe Orioles continued their partnership with KidsPeace in 2016 by hosting 150 youth for KidsPeace Night on August 3. Children from KidsPeace received game tickets, concessions, an Orioles t-shirt and cap, as well as transportation to and from the game as part of the OriolesREACH Gameday Experience. KidsPeace also held a silent auction on the concourse featuring signed memorabilia items and distributed information about their organization at the OriolesREACH Community Booth.

In October, the Orioles once again joined manager Buck Showalter and his wife, Angela, and KidsPeace to host the seventh annual Trick-or-Trot 5K/1-Mile Walk, a Halloween-themed race at Oriole Park to benefit children in foster care. This year’s race drew 1,000 participants and raised $120,000 for KidsPeace. KidsPeace is a nonprofit organization that provides mental and behavioral health care for disadvantaged, challenged, and vulnerable youth in Maryland.

ORIOLES HOST LIGHT CITY SCHOLARSThe Orioles hosted 11 members of the Light City Teen Scholars in August for a day of learning and baseball. The Teen Scholars met with several members of the Orioles front office, experienced what it takes to work behind the scenes of a Major League Baseball game, and stayed for the game. The Light City Scholars are made up of Baltimore City high school sophomores and juniors who were chosen for the year-long program of educational opportunities, hands on learning experiences, vocational training, team building, and leadership development.

MARYLAND PUBLIC LIBRARIES SUMMER READING PROGRAMThe Orioles encouraged students to read throughout the summer by donating 5,000 game tickets to students who completed the Maryland State Department of Education’s Division of Library Development and Services’ Summer Reading Program. Representatives from each county library were also recognized in a special ceremony in August. This year’s theme, On Your Mark, Get Set….Read!, focused on young people’s passion for play through the exploration of sports, games, and movement through books, science activities, art projects, and more. Last summer, more than 200,000 children and teens participated in the Maryland Public Library Summer Reading Program. The program is a collaborative project between the local public libraries and the Maryland State Department of Education’s Division of Library Development and Services, with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Maryland is a participating member of the national Collaborative Summer Library Program.

CASEY CARES FOUNDATIONThe Orioles once again partnered with the Casey Cares Foundation to host the seventh annual Casey Cares 5K Run/Walk at Oriole Park with Orioles first baseman Chris Davis serving as race ambassador. With the Orioles on the road in Chicago, Davis’ wife, Jill Davis, was on site to cheer on race participants. More than 1,200 participants engaged in a pre-race warm-up with the Oriole Bird and were able to enjoy music, other entertainment, and post-race refreshments. In August, the Orioles with Chris and Jill Davis, honored top finishers and fundraisers. The Casey Cares 5K Run/Walk raised more than $114,000, which funds the Casey Cares Foundation’s ongoing mission to provide personalized, uplifting, and ongoing programs with a special touch to critically-ill children and their family members through the Mid-Atlantic region.

Throughout the 2016 season, the Orioles also welcomed critically-ill children and their families within the Casey Cares program to enjoy on-field batting practice experiences. The Orioles also hosted the Casey Cares Foundation at the OriolesREACH Community Booth in April, where representatives from the nonprofit promoted their cause to Orioles fans.

SHANNON’S FUNDAn endowment at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Shannon’s Fund was established by the Orioles and OriolesREACH in 2008 to provide financial support to cancer patients and their families to assist with many expenses associated with the treatment process. The endowment was created in memory of Shannon Obaker, the club’s former Director of Community Outreach, who bravely fought cancer for a year before she passed away in 2007 at the age of 29. The Orioles continue to support Shannon’s Fund each season through events, donations, and auctions.

This season, country singer Jenae Cherry, wife of Orioles pitcher Brad Brach, debuted an Orioles-themed, original song, “Don’t Miss the Magic,” to fans during a post-game performance in August. For every stream or download of “Don’t Miss the Magic,” the Orioles Charitable Foundation donated $5 to Shannon’s Fund.

In August, the Orioles and OriolesREACH hosted a private fundraising event for Shannon’s Fund which raised more than $7,200. The event included a pregame barbeque, an opportunity to watch batting practice from the center field Roof Deck, a visit from Orioles pitchers Yovani Gallardo and Kevin Gausman, photos with the Oriole Bird, an Orioles gift, as well as fireworks following the conclusion of the game.

Overall, through these and other club efforts, more than $30,000 was raised for Shannon’s Fund in 2016.

LUNGEVITY FOUNDATION For the third consecutive year, the Orioles hosted the LUNGevity Foundation’s Breathe Deep Baltimore, a 5K walk to raise funds and awareness for lung cancer in memory of Orioles’ late Public Relations Director, Monica Pence Barlow, on October 22, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Barlow passed away in February of 2014 after a four and a half year battle with non-small cell lung cancer. This year’s race drew more than 800 participants, raising $118,000 for the LUNGevity Foundation.

This season, in partnership with the LUNGevity Foundation, the Orioles invited Dick Gamper of Baltimore to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before a game in September. Gamper was chosen in honor of his late wife, Maria, who served on LUNGevity’s Breathe Deep Baltimore Committee before passing away from lung cancer in March. Maria Gamper worked tirelessly raising funds and awareness for lung cancer research.

The LUNGevity Foundation also held a silent auction at Oriole Park, which raised $2,600, and was represented at the OriolesREACH Community Booth.

ORIOLES CHARITABLE FOUNDATION AND KEVIN GAUSMAN TEAM UP TO RAISE MORE THAN $55,000 FOR LOUISIANA FLOOD VICTIMSIn August, 30 inches of rain fell in three days in Louisiana, which led to 13 deaths and caused more than $80 million in damages to homes, businesses, and communities. Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman joined several of his fellow Louisiana State University baseball alumni to help raise funds to benefit the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s Louisiana Flood Relief Fund. With the support of family and friends, Gausman raised more than $15,000, which he matched with a personal donation of $15,000. Additionally, the Orioles Charitable Foundation donated $25,000 to the fund in support of Gausman’s efforts. In an on-field ceremony in September, Gausman, along with his fiancée Taylor North, presented a check to Elizabeth Hutchison of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation philanthropic services.

FESTIVAL OF TREESIn late November, the Orioles participated as a designer in the 2016 Festival of Trees in Timonium, Md. The Festival of Trees is an annual holiday-themed family event that benefits Kennedy Krieger Institute. The theme of this year’s Orioles’ tree celebrated the upcoming 25th Anniversary of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It featured ornaments of iconic moments and ballpark features of Oriole Park, including Cal Ripken, Jr.’s record-breaking 2,131st consecutive game, ‘BUCKle Up’ and ‘We Won’t Stop’ slogans, and Orioles Hall of Fame sculptures.

CARDBOARD TO LEATHER EQUIPMENT COLLECTIONIn September, the Orioles and the Oriole Advocates conducted their 2016 Cardboard to Leather™ collection, presented by Legg Mason. Fans brought new or gently-used baseball equipment to the game and provided financial donations to help underprivileged youth in developing countries. In the last eight years alone, the Oriole Advocates have impacted more than 50,000 children internationally and domestically through the Cardboard to Leather program. This year, fans contributed over $2,700 and donated more than 1,200 items of equipment during the collection. A portion of the proceeds from this season’s Cardboard to Leather collection were donated to the Ubaldo Jiménez Foundation, based in the Dominican Republic, which supplies children with baseball and softball equipment.

Legg Mason presented the Oriole Advocates Charitable Foundation with a $5,000 contribution for the Cardboard to Leather Equipment Collection in a pregame ceremony in September. The Baseball Tomorrow Fund also awarded a grant of $5,000 to the Oriole Advocates Charitable Foundation for the purchase of new equipment.

The Oriole Advocates Charitable Foundation conducted a silent auction of sports memorabilia to benefit the Cardboard to Leather program. Fans had the chance to bid on baseballs, photos, bats, and jerseys autographed by current Orioles, which raised over $2,800.

UBALDO JIMÉNEZ

The children in my home country of the Dominican Republic are passionate

about baseball but they often lack the necessary equipment to play the game they love. They improvise with sticks and balls and handmade gloves but nothing compares to receiving real gloves, bats, baseballs, and cleats through programs like the Cardboard to Leather drive. It’s life-changing for those children and that is what it’s all about. This is bigger than the game.”

BARCS PET CALENDAR SALE AND AUTOGRAPH SIGNINGThis season, the Orioles unveiled the eighth annual pet calendar, sponsored by Pet+E.R., with all proceeds benefiting the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS), a nonprofit shelter that accepts and cares for all animals in need. The 16-month calendar includes photos of Orioles players with their pets and various BARCS animals at locations around Oriole Park. This year’s calendar features Brad Brach, Zach Britton, Dylan Bundy, Chris Davis, Ryan Flaherty, Kevin Gausman, Mychal Givens, J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones, Hyun Soo Kim, Manny Machado, Darren O’Day, Nolan Reimold, Joey Rickard, Chris Tillman, and Matt Wieters, as well as manager Buck Showalter. Additionally, Ryan Flaherty, Kevin Gausman, J.J. Hardy, and Hyun Soo Kim appeared at BARCS for an autograph signing in August.

The Orioles have helped to raise nearly $240,000 for BARCS over the last seven years. The largest companion animal shelter in Maryland, BARCS takes in more than 12,000 dogs and cats and 1,000 wildlife and other small mammals annually. On any given day, BARCS cares

for 110 dogs and 110 cats in the shelter, plus more than 800 animals in foster care. On August 21, Dr. Tanya Tag, Medical Director of Pet+E.R., presented a check for $8,000 to BARCS Executive Director Jennifer Brause to support BARCS and their ongoing work to help homeless and abused animals in Baltimore. The USO aims to bring a little bit of home to these families by providing important programs and services.”

The thing about cancer is that it affects everybody – we all know someone who has been impacted by cancer. It’s especially tough to see young children who are

dealing with this disease. Helping kids with cancer is something that my wife, Courtney, and I really wanted to do. When we visit patients at Johns Hopkins, our hope is that they can forget about their treatments for a little bit and just enjoy being a kid.”

In 2012, the Miracle League of Manasota built a synthetically-surfaced baseball field with all the requisite amenities located at Longwood Park, north of University Parkway in Sarasota. Sarasota County committed $500,000 to building the field, with the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates each contributing $75,000. Since opening in March 2012, more than 500 players have participated in the league’s 10 seasons.

YOUTH BASEBALL & SOFTBALL CLINICSThe Orioles host year-round baseball and softball clinics in Sarasota to support active lifestyles and to teach area youth the fundamentals of the game. In 2016, the club hosted clinics for participants from Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, Sarasota YMCA Frank G. Berlin Sr. branch, Manatee YMCA Lakewood Ranch branch, and Girls, Inc.BRAD BRACH

Through this program, we are encouraging and in fact, incentivizing, middle-school aged children to make healthy choices about

nutrition and exercise so that they can develop positive lifelong habits. As professional athletes, we have a responsibility to set a good example and encourage healthy habits, especially in children.”

In 2016, the Orioles and Sarasota County Schools launched a new, comprehensive program to encourage healthy lifestyles among middle school-aged children in Sarasota County. The Orioles Health & Fitness Challenge, developed in partnership with HealthFit Powered by Sarasota Memorial and SWAT, teaches students about the importance of physical fitness, healthy eating, and tobacco-free living. The six-week program was offered in nine county schools for approximately 4,000 students in grades six through eight. Former Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts

and the Oriole Bird visited McIntosh Middle School on Opening Day to help launch the program and lead the students through a series of drills and exercises.

Students participated in a variety of health and fitness challenges, including exercises to build endurance, strength, flexibility, speed, and balance, plus a healthy eating goal. After each week was completed, participating students received an Orioles-themed prize. Students who completed the entire six-week challenge received two complimentary tickets to an Orioles Spring Training game this season and vouchers for complimentary concessions at a new “Orioles Fit!” healthy-food stand at Ed Smith Stadium.

To wrap up the six-week Orioles Health & Fitness Challenge, Orioles pitchers Brad Brach and Mike Wright visited Sarasota Middle School, coaching the students during the one-mile run and participating in a series of calisthenics. The pitchers also signed autographs and took photographs with the students.

HOWL-O-WEEN SPOOKTACULAR Over 1,700 people enjoyed the second annual Howl-O-Ween Movie Night Spooktacular at Ed Smith Stadium, sponsored by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, and the Sarasota Film Festival. This year, over 1,700 pounds of donated non-perishable food items were collected at the gates as admission into the free, family-friendly event, which featured a Halloween costume parade led by the Oriole Bird and a screening of the movie “Hotel Transylvania.”

ED SMITH STADIUM – FIELD OF THE YEAR 2015Head Groundskeeper of Florida Operations Dan Thomas and his crew accepted the 2015 “Field of the Year” award for professional baseball, presented by the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) in a pregame ceremony on Opening Day of the spring season. STMA’s “Field of the Year Award” is considered the highest honor in the industry.

RUN FOR THE BIRDSFor the second year, the Orioles hosted “Run for the Birds” to benefit Save Our Seabirds. The event featured 1-mile and 5K races to raise awareness and funds for the nonprofit organization. Save Our Seabirds works to rescue, rehabilitate, and release sick and injured wild birds while educating the community about preventing injuries and preserving habitats. Birds that are unable to be returned to the wild are given permanent homes in the organization’s Wild Bird Learning Center in Sarasota.

MAYORS’ FEED THE HUNGRY SORTING DAYThe Orioles again teamed up to host the Mayors’ Feed the Hungry “sorting day” in November. The all-volunteer nonprofit collects and distributes food to local Sarasota people in need, and its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive collects more than 46 tons of non-perishable food items each year. During sorting day, volunteers sort the donated food for pick-up by the agencies and charities that distribute food to families in need in time for Thanksgiving. Mayors’ Feed the Hungry has collected and distributed more than 200 tons of food and more than $2 million in food gift cards given to the hungry in Sarasota and Manatee counties since 1987.

SARASOTA SPRINGFESTThe Orioles invited fans to celebrate the start of Spring Training at Sarasota SpringFest, a free, family-friendly event for fans of all ages at Ed Smith Stadium. Fans watched Orioles players practice on the back fields and enjoyed games and interactive activities.

SUPPORT FOR ALL FAITHS FOOD BANKThe Orioles in 2016 expanded their support for All Faiths Food Bank to fight hunger in Sarasota County, hosting the organization’s major public fundraiser as well as the annual food drive during Spring Training. In November, the Orioles joined with All Faiths to host the annual Bowls of Hope fundraiser to fight hunger in Sarasota County. More than 1,500 attended the event at Ed Smith Stadium where donors enjoyed a simple meal of soup and bread; a reminder of the empty bowls community members can fill together. During the sixth annual All Faiths Food Drive in March at Ed Smith Stadium, fans donated non-perishable food items and cash to benefit the Food Bank. Since 2011, more than 4,000 pounds of food and more than $5,000 in cash donations have been collected at the yearly food drive to help people in need in the Sarasota community. In 2015, All Faiths Food Bank distributed 8 million pounds of food, which equates to nearly 6.5 million meals.

YOUTH BASEBALL SEASON OPENERS IN SARASOTAAttending youth baseball openers for local teams has been a tradition since the Orioles arrived in Sarasota for Major League Spring Training in 2010. This season, the Oriole Bird made three stops to help open youth baseball leagues. On February 13, the Oriole Bird participated in the Opening Day ceremony for the Venice Little League. The Bird also flew into the Sarasota Little League season’s commencement at Twin Lakes Park on February 27. On March 19, the Oriole Bird helped launch the Miracle League of Manasota’s 2016 spring season with an appearance in Sarasota.

“GO GREEN” AUCTIONAs part of the Orioles’ annual “Go Green” auction, Orioles fans placed bids online for game-worn, specially-designed white jerseys with green Orioles script lettering and a shamrock on the right sleeve along with green caps from the Orioles game on St. Patrick’s Day. The caps and jerseys were autographed, authenticated, and auctioned online, raising more than $9,000 for Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
