Silver LiningsProfessor Eric Tsui’s forthcoming talk will discuss what the Cloud can provide businesses, organisations and individuals. John Bensalhia reports.

Back in the day, if you mentioned the cloud in conversation, the most likely form of chat would be about the weather. Grey skies, wind, rain – those clouds certainly do the job.

But in the 21st century, there’s another type of cloud, and it’s one that brings far sunnier prospects. In fact, everything that you need to know about the Cloud – its functions, purposes, benefits – can be found at the forthcoming Cloud Expo Asia event. This coming May, AsiaWorld-Expo will play host to the event which includes a wealth of speakers and experts.

These will include Professor Eric Tsui, who will be providing a talk on just what the Cloud can offer individuals, businesses and organisations. “I will be talking and illustrating how the Cloud can add significant value to individuals, groups and organisations - much much more than the usual business and IT services. I will cover how the Cloud support systematic and ad hoc innovations, location of experts to solve problems, use of social media for peer-based lifelong learning and more.”

Eric says that he is a “practitioner turned academic.”

“I used to work in IT industry in Australia for 15 years but I always have one foot in academia. In 2005, I took up a full time post at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.”

One of Eric’s biggest accomplishments was his involvement in the

COLOSSUS Expert System. During his first 10 years in the industry, Eric was involved in the design, support and development of an extension to COLOSSUS, which is a system that deals with bodily injury and workers’ compensation claims.

“COLOSSUS is a rule based expert system for calculating the compensation settlement for various heads of damages for people injured in car accidents or at the workplace,” says Eric. “It does so by asking and seeking independent evidence of, among others, trauma, medical prognosis, progress of recovery, impairments, duration of hospitalisation, loss of enjoyment of life, disfigurement etc. to calculate the final recommended settlement value for an assessor.”

In addition, Eric has also worked as Chief Research Officer, Asia Pacific for CSC, and Innovation Manager at Australian Mutual Provident & Maybank, as well as consulting for government departments and private organisations in locations such as Hong Kong, Malaysia and Australia. He has also been featured in publications and journals such as Expert Systems With Applications, Knowledge-based Systems, and Information Processing and Management.

Looking at today’s work in businesses and organisations, Eric says: “Increasingly, we are faced with knowledge work which is highly unstructured and unpredictable. We need to leverage on our trusted networks to solve problems, and we need to learn, reflect and adapt frequently, We also need to deal with massive information overload.”

Eric’s talk will be looking at all aspects of the Cloud for individuals and businesses, and how these can help out with any potential challenges. And there are further developments in the pipeline too. “We are setting up a Cloud services laboratory and initiating research projects to conduct massive Cloud sourcing covering innovations, idea sourcing, campaign management, and inter-organisational learning via a Cloud environment.”

Hear from Eric Tsui, Associate Director, Knowledge Management and Innovation Research Centre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on Wednesday 18th May at 12:10 - 12:35 in the Big Data & Analytics + the Internet of Things Theatre

Care AssistanceHow is the Internet of Things assisting the healthcare sector? Group CIO for Max Healthcare, Sumit Puri, explains how to John Bensalhia.

The healthcare sector has been given a considerable boost by the Internet Of Things. Modern IOT technology can help with treatments for patients, and ultimately improve the facilities and care provided. This year’s events, both in London and in Asia, will include a selection of talks on this particular subject, offering a greater insight into what services are available and what developments will be taking place in the future.

One such speaker is Group CIO for Max Healthcare, Sumit Puri, who will be delivering a talk at Cloud Expo Asia HK 2016 this coming May. “The session would

provide an overview of how the Internet of things and connected wearable devices are impacting the enterprise technology environment, primarily in the healthcare sector.” Specifically, Sumit’s talk will cover the following three strands: The Internet of things – what it means and its potential impact in healthcare; The framework for implementing IoT in enterprises; and finally, suggestions on mitigating the potential challenges in this sector.

Sumit is an Engineer MBA by education with over 22 years experience in top companies and consulting organisations in Asia. As the Group CIO for Max

Healthcare, Sumit’s job is to look after IT systems and infrastructure across 13 hospitals in India.

“Max Healthcare is considered one of the leading super-speciality hospital chain in India, offering a range of secondary and tertiary clinical services like Oncology, Neurology, Orthopaedics, Gastronomy. Nephrology, Endocronology, Pediatrics etc. It has a customer base of over two million patients with over 2500 beds spread across 13 hospitals in India catering to patents in both India and abroad.”

The Internet Of Things is transforming the healthcare sector in various positive ways for its services and customers. “IoT is improving integration of healthcare offerings and enabling customers to manage and track their health using wearable devices and real time mobile apps,” comments Sumit. “This is putting pressure on healthcare organisations to create a customer centric connected ecosystem of devices and processes focused on both prevention and cure.”

A notable benefit of data technology in the healthcare sector is to help both predictive and preventive treatments, as Sumit explains: “Considering the wealth of patient data available in hospitals, healthcare sector is a prime candidate for data technology and Big Data initiatives. By leveraging data effectively, healthcare organisations can get a holistic view of the customer and significantly improve patient health through predictive and preventive treatments validated with the help of technology.”

With the latest developments on wearable devices, Sumit concludes that the Internet of Things has a very healthy future in the healthcare area – aiding and helping its patients through evolving technology and innovation: “IoT has a very bright future in healthcare sector and can radically transform how care is administered to patients of tomorrow.

Hear from Sumit Puri, Chief Information Officer, Max Healthcare on Thursday 19th May at 15:00 - 15:25 in the Cloud Expo Asia Keynote Theatre

SPEAKER INTERVIEW

Cloud In The PlanetJohn Bensalhia meets Darragh Kennedy, who will be presenting his forthcoming session on Lonely Planet’s progress to 100% Cloud at the Cloud Expo Asia event this May.

Chinese philosopher Laozi once claimed that the journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step. For any modern business, the decision to move with the technological times is a good example of how that one initial step can result in a considerably progressive step forward into the future.

For any enterprise or business, making the move to the Cloud brings a host of benefits – and this notion will be covered in Darragh Kennedy’s forthcoming talk at the Cloud Expo Asia event in Hong Kong this May. “My session will look at Lonely Planet’s journey from on-premise infrastructure to 100% Cloud: with that has come a high level of automation and autonomy.”

For more than 12 years, Darragh has built Data Centres and Networks in both Asia and Europe. Darragh has also been responsible for web delivery, security and Cloud transformation at Lonely Planet. “I studied IT engineering and spent many years in the Infrastructure and development space,” says Darragh. “Recently, I have moved into the ERP and E-commerce space gaining exposure to the commercial side of the business.”

Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel media company, providing inspiring and trustworthy information for every kind of traveller since 1973. “Over the past four decades, Lonely Planet has cultivated a dedicated traveller community and printed more than 130 million books in 13 different languages to most destinations on the planet,” says Darragh. “The Lonely Planet ecosystem also includes digital and mobile apps, a comprehensive ebook portfolio, 12 international magazines and an award-winning website. At Lonely Planet, I help drive our Cloud strategy and publishing development.”

Lonely Planet has been making the most of digital technologies – using these have ensured great benefits. For example, the company recently took the decision to transfer all of its computing to IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service). This move ensured that two of the key watchwords in any business were saved – time and money. Moving from premises to the Cloud offers a number of advantages – not just for Lonely Planet, but for any business. As Darragh explains, now that development in this field has hastened, this can afford business the chance to experiment further: “The speed of development and change is now incredibly fast, web development is all about experimentation and iteration now.”

Security levels have also been changed for the better, thanks to IaaS: “The ‘outsourcing’ of the physical layer using IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) lets us focus on application security,” explains Darragh. “This goes a step further when we consume SaaS (Software as a Service), we leverage the economies of scale of large providers on security and focus on our speciality, travel.”

Darragh concludes that the evolution of SaaS ERP is very much an ecosystem play: “This allows the vendor to focus on the core and allow innovation via their platform - it is an API driven evolution.”

Future PlanningWui-Kiat Wong, Senior Associate with Norman Disney & Young (NDY), explains the importance of preparing existing data centres for future challenges to John Bensalhia.

Preparing for the future takes up much of our time. Whether it’s placing the ‘To Do’ notes on the screens of computers for the week ahead or pencilling in meetings or events in the diary, future planning is key.

This is also true when looking ahead to the future of data centres. Providing some thoughts on this matter in May’s Cloud Expo Asia Hong Kong event will be Wui-Kiat Wong, Senior Associate with Norman Disney & Young (NDY).

Wui-Kiat’s presentation will be under the banner of Preparing Your Existing Data Centre for the Challenges Ahead. “My session/presentation will aim to cover off

the main issues facing existing data centres,” says Wui-Kiat. “It will also provide a summary of what can be done to prepare it for the future.” Items on the agenda include future technologies; enterprise versus co-location; different models of the Cloud; business needs; and master-planning and future upgrades.

Norman Disney & Young (NDY) is a professional services firm of consulting engineers with a global presence, and has offices in locations such as Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Dubai, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

“Established in 1959, Norman Disney & Young remains a private company employing more than 600 people servicing key markets in buildings, health, mission critical/data centres, defence, transport, industrial and utilities,” says Wui-Kiat. “My job is to work with our clients to understand their needs/requirements and subsequently deliver cost effective, innovative and sustainable solutions. I was previously based in NDY’s Sydney office but have now relocated to open up NDY’s new Hong Kong office.”

Wui-Kiat has worked in the construction and operation of data centres for more than 12 years with successfully completed projects in Australia and Asia. His particular fields of expertise cover Diesel Rotary UPS systems and Medium/High Voltage systems. He also has a particular interest in Nanotechnology and optical based computing systems.

Wui-Kiat addresses what the main issues currently are for data centres: “Ensuring that the building and the installed infrastructure can support changing technologies within the IT white space, while maintaining resilience and improving efficiency.”

Wui-Kiat says that data is essential for any business operating in today’s environment, adding that particular fields of business operation can either be aided or hampered by the actions of a data centre: “Data centres can either help or hinder a business through: the data centre’s capacity and ability to expand; the data centre’s reliability/resilience; and the data centre’s efficiency and running cost.”

However, in Hong Kong, there have been some notable technologies and upgrades which have been introduced for data centres. Furthermore, Wui-Kiat says that he anticipates more future developments taking place in this field. “In the Hong Kong market, recent technology upgrades include advances in free cooling solutions, Rotary UPSs, higher power densities and cooling solutions.”

“I expect to see further developments at the rack and server level - for example, Open Compute.”

Hear from Wui-Kiat Wong, Senior Associate / Electrical Team Leader, Norman Disney & Young on Wednesday 18th May at 14:15 - 14:40 in the Data Centre World Asia Keynote Theatre

WELCOME TO CLOUD EXPO ASIA 2016On behalf of our sponsors, exhibitors, event partners and supporting organisations, we are delighted to welcome you to the inaugural Cloud Expo Asia here in Hong Kong.

I’d like to personally thank the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Invest Hong Kong, the OGCIO and AsiaWorld-Expo for going above and beyond to help ensure that we were able to put on this unique event for the Hong Kong IT profession and business community.

With the Asia Cloud Computing Association (ACCA) placing Hong Kong at the top of its Cloud Readiness Index 2016, the timing of the first Cloud Expo Asia here in Asia’s World City and the gateway to Greater China is perfectly timed.

Over the next two days you’ll get access to the very latest, cutting edge solutions and expertise – with over 200 conference and panel sessions to choose from, including mouth-watering case studies from business owners that have overcome similar challenges to the ones you face every day as well as insight from industry and government leaders as to the evolving cloud and data landscape across the region.

All sessions are FREE to attend thanks to the amazing sponsorship received, so wherever you might be on your cloud journey – make use of the advice and guidance complied to help you formulate and implement the right business and technology strategies for your organisation.

The expo floor here in Hong Kong is the biggest we’ve seen for a first edition of a Cloud Expo & Date Centre World event worldwide. That is testament to the opportunity that vendors and service providers see in this region to help enterprise organisations, and other service providers, take their next steps in cloud adoption – over 100 organisations can be found across the event, each and every one of them will have a specific technology or service that could be the solution to help revolutionise your business.

To incentivise you to explore every corner of the event, make sure you pick the Apple Prize Draw entry card from the entrance area or HKTB Delegate Information Point – by visiting all 20 highlighted booths during your visit you will be entered into the draw to win Apple products worth HK$20,000.

On behalf of the Cloud Expo Asia team – we wish you a rewarding, enjoyable and productive couple of days.

Kind regards, Chris Brown, Group Event Director – Hong Kong

Please do join me and the CloserStill Media team for the Networking Drinks Reception from 17.00 – 18.30 (Wednesday 18th May only) taking place at the Delegate Catering Area.

Talking TransformationHow can the Cloud drive forward digital transformation for businesses? Aman Garg, Barclays’ Vice President, Business Transformation Lead APAC, explains all to John Bensalhia.

Digital transformation is the way ahead for businesses, and Aman Garg, Barclays’ Vice President, Business Transformation Lead APAC lists a trio of important reasons as to why: “The three main benefits are: Improved decision making, better risk taking abilities and being able to better serve employees.”

Aman will be exploring the concept of Digital Transformation at this year’s Cloud Expo Asia Hong Kong event – and more specifically, how the Cloud can drive Digital Transformation.

“In this, I will talk about the future of Digital Transformation and why it is important for the industry especially the enterprises. Cloud can be a key enabler for digital transformation and this session will detail about how Cloud can be used to drive digital transformation in an organisation.”

Based in Singapore, Aman has over 15 years’ experience in the IT industry with five years in Barclays Singapore. He has worked with major financial and consulting institutions such as Bank of America, Credit Suisse, Danske Bank, Accenture, Lloyds TSB Registrars, and eBookers in various roles and capacities.

Aman is currently responsible for leading business transformation across the APAC region. He has worked with a number of teams and projects over the region and has used training and coaching in their Agile adoption journey: “I am working as a Business Transformation Lead in Barclays, helping them transform the way projects are delivered in Agile way with lesser overhead.”

In addition to this, Aman is responsible for creating scorecards to track the progress over the APAC region. He is also part of the global business transformation team to drive the agenda across the organisation.

Discussing his forthcoming session at Cloud Expo Asia Hong Kong, Aman says that his session will cover two main areas: “The first of these is why Digital Transformation has become a necessity for today’s organisations. The other is how the Cloud will play an integral role in shaping up a digitised organisation which will improve decision making, risk taking abilities and being able to serve employees better.”

Aman explains how the Cloud can drive digital transformation forward for businesses and organisations: “The Cloud is a great enabler for organisations to take a big step towards digital transformation. As the data is growing exponentially and companies are becoming more and more global in nature, it’s imperative to look out for options which can deliver data and other related services at low cost without compromising the security, availability and scalability. The Cloud is the only platform which can provide all of these.”

Looking to the future, Aman says that with brand new trends in markets introduced on a regular basis, digital transformation is the way forward: “Most companies don’t even have a comprehensive digital strategy which is required to keep up with the pace at which markets are changing. New trends are being introduced every other day. Are we capable enough to meet the challenge? The answer is a plain and simple “No” and digital transformation is the key to the future.”

Hear from Aman Garg, Vice President, Agile Coach APAC, Barclays on Wednesday 18th May at 15:50 - 16:15 in the Cloud Management, Services & Applications Theatre

BIG DATA AND ANALYTICS

BIG DATA & ANALYTICS + THE INTERNET OF THINGS THEATRE

Data and analytics is one of the hottest topics for today’s technologists and business leaders, as the savviest organisations know that a rock-solid, no stone unturned data game plan is the best way to unearth new business strategies, customers and revenue streams. This track highlights the best way to capture, curate, store, search, share, transfer, analyse and visualise your data.

IoT is the third wave of Internet development. The IoT has the potential to connect 28 billion “things” to the Internet by 2020, ranging from wearables to cars – up from 2000s’ mobile wave of around 3 billion users and the 1990s’ fixed internet wave of 1 billion users. It’s clear IoT is not a fad, and for businesses using the IoT whilst harnessing the power of Big Data alongside, it will be revolutionary, especially for the organisations that can effectively use analytics to transform the data into meaningful business insight and competitive advantage.

Making The Transfer HDS’ Lewis Winning talks about the importance, benefits and challenges of transferring to the Cloud. John Bensalhia reports.

For an all-round guide to transferring to the Cloud, then Lewis Winning’s session at Cloud Expo Asia Hong Kong is a must-see.

Lewis will be discussing both sides of customer transition to the Cloud, looking at the benefits and some of the potential problems posed: “My session at the Expo will cover the transition to the Cloud from a customer point of view,” says Lewis. “Specifically, the challenges they face today, the opportunities that the Cloud presents for them and the obstacles to success. There will also be a case study that illustrates all of this as well as HDS’s strategy for delivering Cloud solutions that will make our customer’s journey a success.”

Lewis is no stranger to the IT industry, with an impressive 30 years experience – including a specific emphasis on enterprise infrastructure, storage solutions, and creating alignments between business requirements and IT.

“Before joining HDS as a Systems Engineer in 1989, I worked for the largest privately owned bank outside of Chicago, Illinois – the Marine Bank of Springfield – which was one of the oldest banks in the State,” says Lewis. “I spent six years there, starting as an application programmer responsible for mortgage loans and the trust applications. I then transferred into a systems programmer role, responsible for operating systems and networking.”

“Some of the innovations the bank brought to market, and that I worked on from a development standpoint in the mid to late 1980’s, included the creation of early ATM machine code as well as Electronic Clearing House applications that were the basis for early electronic debits and credits.” Lewis adds that these two particular projects were largely responsible for Banc One Corporation’s (eventually acquired by JP Morgan Chase) decision to purchase Marine Bank in the very early 1990’s.

“In my current position as Vice President of Global Presales Engineering, I am responsible for enhancing the development of our Presales Engineering teams, while creating a consistent execution strategy for these critical resources to support HDS’ global capabilities in delivering Infrastructure, Content, Converged, and Cloud solutions to create positive business outcomes for our customers.”

Lewis says that the advantages that the enterprise IT organisations who successfully make the journey to the Cloud are tremendous. “They include greater agility, which will help them to meet the needs of the business from an applications delivery model.”

Other major benefits that HDS sees for its customers includes comprehensive capabilities to enable multiple Cloud frameworks with consumption flexibility and choice; and enterprise grade capabilities with high quality solutions, security, and control over their data and service delivery models. A further boon is that of predictable outcomes focused on customer requirements, better economics, increased efficiency, and better utilsation of assets.

But there are also challenges for enterprise IT organisations to overcome with respect to the Cloud and how can these be overcome. “The major challenges that enterprise IT organisations face include security; control of assets; consistent service levels; enterprise quality, in terms of capability, availability, and support; and also open frameworks to support and enable the Cloud the way they want it (private, public, and hybrid).”

“These challenges can be overcome by deploying the right sets of technologies and frameworks to enable the benefits of the Cloud while keeping an eye on the requirements of the enterprise and the business.”

Lewis explains that a good vendor should address these key requirements above to allow the enterprise to gain all the capabilities and the benefits the Cloud has to offer while addressing the challenges that they may face in going to the Cloud. “It should be seamless in terms of supporting the business, but with greater speed of delivery, development, and economics.”

For enterprise IT organisations, the Cloud has much to offer – both now, and also in the future. “Customers are moving in the direction of the Cloud – there is no doubt about that.”

However, Lewis adds that the rate of adoption and acceleration will be dependent on their ability to transform their organisations to embrace the Cloud. “One example is moving from a traditional approach to application development to a “devops” approach, with the underlying infrastructure and services to support that shift.”

Hear from Lewis Winning, Vice President – Global Presales Engineering, Hitachi Data Systems on Wednesday 18th May at 15:00 - 15:25 in the Cloud Expo Asia Keynote Theatre

Policing The SystemJohn Bensalhia talks to Allan S. Cabanlong about cybersecurity management in the Philippines and how these can help prevent potential cyber threats.

When looking at cyber threats, it’s a prob-lem that manifests itself in a considera-ble number of ways. Apart from hacking, threats such as data breaches and web-site attacks continue to plague internet users, whether at home or in business.

Allan S. Cabanlong will be tackling this subject at his session at the forthcoming May event in Hong Kong, and how cyber-security is being used in the Philippines to tackle these attacks head on.

“I will be discussing the Philippines cyber-security landscape, the national cyber-security strategy framework, Executive

Order 189, and the role of every PH agency in cybersecurity as well as the future of cybersecurity In the Philippines.”

Allan’s experience in this field is considerably wide. As well as being a Police Chief Inspector, he is also a Certified Knowledge Management Professional and a Certified Business Intelligence Professional. He is currently the Chief of Information Technology Office of the Police Regional Office 1. Prior to this, Allan was the Chief, Web Services and Cyber Security Division of the Philippine National Police — Information Technology Management Service from August 2011 to December 2015. He is an ASEAN Engineer, a Professional Electronic Engineer and a graduate of Master of Science in Global Information and Telecommunications Studies at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.

“I am with the law enforcement, the Philippine National Police, holding various key IT positions since 2003 like Chief, Information Technology Office - Police Regional Office 1 (current), Chief of Web Services and Cyber Security Division (08/2011 - 12/2015), Asst Chief, Data Warehouse Office, Chief, Security Office, Plans Officer, Makati Police IT Officer.”

“My role involves systems engineering - analysis and design, cybersecurity assurance of various information systems for the PNP and of the other government agencies as well. I am also involved in crafting cybersecurity and cybercrime policies and manuals for the Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Congress of the Philippines and the Office of the President Anti Terrorism Council.”

In addition, Allan was a member of the Technical Working Group in the drafting of the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (RA10175) of the Republic of the Philippines with the Office of the Honorable Senator Edgardo J. Angara. He is also one of the four core group members in the drafting of the proposed Use of Internet for Terrorist Purposes Bill of the Republic of the Philippines with the Office of the President (Anti-Terrorism Council) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and an architect of the Administrative Order 39 signed by the President of the Philippines in 2013.

Allan explains what the main cybersecurity threats in the Philippines are: “Intrusion, data leakage, web defacements, and internal threats in the financial institutions, BPOs, health care and the government.” Allan says that there are a good number of key causes of the threats. These include poor cybersecurity strategy implementation, a lack of skilled cybersecurity forces, poor enforcement of security policies and also, a lack of cybersecurity awareness.

“In response to this evolving and growing cyber threat landscape, the BSP (The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas) has been taking measures to preserve public trust and confidence in the financial system,” a BSP statement quoting Tetangco said. This includes “relevant regulatory framework” that it has adopted since the advent of electronic banking in the country.

For more details on cybersecurity management in the Philippines, come and see Allan’s talk which will be taking place at the forthcoming two-day event between 18th and 19th May 2016.

Hear from Allan Salim Cabanlong, Chief Information Technology Office, Police Regional Office on Wednesday 18th May at 11:10 - 11:35 in the Cloud Security & Governance Theatre

Finance For The FutureIf banks are to stay in the competition and continue to provide top services, then financial technology is a must – Emil Chan explains why to John Bensalhia.

A key message that Emil Chan, Chairman of the Association of Cloud and Mobile Computing Professionals, stresses is that the banking sector needs technology like never before. Not just today, but in the future.

“On top of the traditional need of using technology to increase productivity and security level, banks need new technology to enhance customer relationships as there are more over-the-top competitors from other industries who are penetrating to the industry by providing better service.”

Emil Chan has more than 20 years’ experience in establishing and managing IT and banking operations of leading international banks - as well as advising and managing technology start-ups and listed companies.

He founded Firmus Asia Company Limited, a Hong Kong-based IT consulting company around three years ago. He is a lecturer on a part-time basis, and has given talks at a number of high profile universities and colleges. Emil is also a corporate consultant with diversified expertise in management, financial products, eCommerce and Internet applications. He has experience in designing, launching, leading and managing regional offices in Asian countries as well as aligning IT with other business units using an enterprise-wide point of view.

Emil will be coming to the Cloud Expo Asia Hong Kong event which is taking place on two days between 18th and 19th May 2016. He will be looking at the impact of Cloud and Fintech to Hong Kong’s Economy. Emil believes that the future of Fintech – financial technology – is a vital tool for banks to use.

“As we are using Internet more often these days and mobile devices have already change the landscape of how people do business, we do not have to do banking the same way as the traditional way. Banks must use Fintech in order to maintain competitiveness.”

With that in mind, Emil explains that the main problem in this sector isn’t the technology, but the fact that some organisations are unwilling to move with the times. “Although technology improves from time to time, the core issue is not on the technology itself. The main problem is the reluctancy of change! As banks are mostly the ‘Rent Seekers’ who are well protected by the legal system, there is not enough driving force for them to change. Banks may have to evolve themselves from providing only financial services to a full-fetch solution. For example, major banks in China are already providing eCommerce platforms for their existing clients.”

Taking that on board, banking technology is set to remain and evolve. “As Brett King said, “Banking is No Longer Somewhere You Go But Something You Do”,” says Emil. “There will be many new business models on banking that make good use of Internet, Cloud computing, big data and last but not least, block chain to disrupt the industry with customer behaviour change and a shift in technology. Sharing Economy will also play a significant role as new models of P2P lending, crowd funding and credit scoring system will only be getting better and more solid.”

Hear from Emil Chan, Chairman, The Association of Cloud and Mobile Computing Professionals on Thursday 19th May at 14:00 - 14:25 in the Big Data & Analytics + the Internet of Things Theatre
