2016Report to the Community

Dear Friends of Discovery World,

In 1983, a group of business leaders and economics professors launched the concept of a center for science, economics and technology in the basement of a Boys & Girls Club located just off Brady Street on Milwaukee’s East Side. Nearly 35 years later, that idea has blossomed into our beautiful Discovery World facility on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Over the years, we have learned a great deal about what it takes to create a stronger and more vibrant economic future for our community, and we know that families and schools cannot shoulder that responsibility alone. Discovery World is uniquely positioned to provide rigorous and effective programs that complement and augment school curriculum, and – with your support – we can have the direct and deep impact that puts kids on the path toward better educational outcomes and future employment.

As we reflect on all that we accomplished in 2016, we thank you for the generosity you continue to show this Milwaukee resource. Our annual report is a celebration of YOU – the partners, families, organizations, schools, volunteers, staff, and kids who make every day at Discovery World an exciting adventure.

We continued to make strides together in 2016, and we look forward to all that can be in the days to come. In 2017, we will expand and reimagine our facility to better serve our community, and we are honored to have earned major community support as we enter our second decade on the lakefront.

On behalf of the Discovery World Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and the thousands of visitors we welcome through our doors each year, we thank you for your commitment to helping Discovery World make an impact on Milwaukee, today and in the future.

Sincerely,

Randall D. Crocker Joel BrennanChairman of the Board President & CEO

Through a combination of our programs and funders, Discovery World serves underrepresented populations, helping bridge the employment gap in Wisconsin by providing access to students who need enrichment the most.

Discovery World has strengthened our relationships with a diverse set of Milwaukee area schools over

the last few years. These schools – public, private, and charter – work in some of the community’s most

challenging neighborhoods, and even high-performing schools in these neighborhoods have identified

weaknesses in math and science outcomes. They also recognize a lack of on-site resources for these

disciplines, and they are eager to work with Discovery World on unique and effective programs.

The Discovery World Access Fund provides educational program

and transportation access to children and families in the

community. These programs include free admission

and complimentary school field trips and educational

labs to schools that need them. These programs serve

those who would otherwise not have the means to visit

Discovery World on their own. In addition to field trips,

our organization provides reduced and/or free access to

summer camps via scholarships, general admissions,

and memberships for families.

STEM EDUCATION

FOR ALLSCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY,

ENGINEERING, MATH

Discovery World understands the critical importance of engaging young minds throughout the year, even

when school is not in session. Summer break provides a challenge for teachers and educational leaders, as

schools are forced to take precious class time in the fall to combat the “summer slide” that happens in far

too many kids.

With hands-on classes focused on experiential learning, our 2016 summer camps engaged young minds

and inspired students to pursue their individual interests and dreams while having fun. We offered over 80

summer camps, with subjects ranging from chemistry and marine biology, to animation and photography.

Discovery World offers scholarship support to dozens of our summer campers, ensuring that kids throughout

the community can take advantage of our educational programs and have their eyes opened to future

career opportunities. Partners like Journey House, the Zilber Family Foundation, the Boys & Girls Clubs,

and Big Brothers/Big Sisters assist us in connecting with kids who will benefit from our summer programs.

CAMP GETS SLIMY,

ELECTRIC & CREATIVE!

Our 2016 summer camp ascended to new heights with 1,541 students participating in our week-long camps exploring robotics, design, biology, freshwater science, and much more.

In 2016, we were

able to provide

week-long camp

experiences to 100

students from

the Boys and

Girls Club.

Badge Workshops and lab programming reached 3,355 participants at Discovery World and our off-site programming.

Girl Scout and Boy Scout programs encompass a wide array of topics ranging from oceanography

and nuclear science to video game design, digital media, chemistry, and robotics. While exploring these

topics, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts build self-confidence, learn new skills and develop their strengths while

having fun in these innovative workshops. The Discovery World Boy Scout and Girl Scout Sleepovers drew

more than 1,000 attendees in 2016. Scouts participated in thematic, hands-on lab experiences led by

Discovery World educators. After the evening workshops, Scouts and their families had Discovery World to

themselves all night to explore and enjoy the interactive exhibits.

BADGES & BELT LOOPS

FOR THE SCOUTS

Scout Sleepovers drew more than 1,000 attendees in 2016.

The Kohl’s Design It! Lab and Kohl’s Design It! Mobile Lab programs offer students and members of the

general public a hands-on learning experience where they can experiment with new ideas, methods, and

materials through the design process. In this collaborative space, guests have access to vacuum-formers,

heat sealers, hot glue guns, and many other tools as they create projects from an ever-changing menu

of items. Our Kohl’s Design It! Lab enables students to understand and appreciate various types of design

while providing them with the necessary skills for a career or simply to encourage them to seek more

innovative and creative solutions to the challenges they face. During Summer Camp, 72 Jr. Fashion

Designer students were provided with the unique experience of working alongside real industry

professionals, Kohl’s Fashion Designers, while designing and assembling their upcycled ensembles.

The Kohl’s Design It! Lab is also engaging very young visitors through the creation of the Kid’s Corner,

a space that allows for age-appropriate, hands-on fun for ages 0-5.

This partnership with Kohl’s enabled Discovery World to offer free public programming

within this interactive and engaging laboratory throughout the year to:

32,300 projects were created and taken home by Discovery World visitors.

Almost 52,000 off-site visitors through the Kohl’s Mobile Lab.

The Kohl’s Design It! Lab team of

artists and designers developed over125

new project-based experiences in 2016.

Nearly 55,000

on-site visitors.

Steve Atwell was a vibrant presence at Discovery World, but passed away suddenly on September 16, 2014,

leaving behind his beloved wife Karen Hunt and his children Stephanie, Emma, and Hunter. His passing

also devastated his colleagues at Discovery World, where Steve spent more than 14 years as the

Development Director. Inspired by Steve’s commitment to both Discovery World and the youth of Milwaukee,

Discovery World Board Member Bruce Milne and the Milne Foundation pledged the initial $50,000 to create

the Steve Atwell Memorial Youth Scholarship endowment. Subsequently, our partner, Kohl’s Department

Stores donated an additional $25,000 to the endowment, as did Rockwell Automation.

When fully funded, this endowment will ensure that young people in our community can continue to find

enrichment and inspiration at Discovery World regardless of their financial status. Steve understood that

children with socioeconomic restrictions face barriers in the form of admission and program fees, but also

in mobility and transportation, and that Discovery World must address all of these challenges with our

partners if we are to have the impact that we desire. When we remove the financial barriers that these

children face, we are enabling urban school-aged children to have the same chance at success in STEM

as their more affluent peers.

Our goal is to raise an additional $400,000 by 2021 resulting in a $500,000 endowment that will generate

approximately $25,000 per year in additional Discovery World scholarship support. These funds give

unrestricted and personalized access to our STEM programs, camps, research, labs, staff, and collaborative

partners to our area’s youth.

GIVING IN HONOR

OF OUR FRIEND

Freshwater plays a critical role in Milwaukee’s economy, and Discovery World introduces young people and their families to freshwater science and the responsibility we all share as stewards of this important natural resource.

In 2016, Discovery World continued its partnership with the Fund for Lake Michigan (FFLM) to maintain

our Freshwater Sustainability Lab. This lab space allows students and the public to participate in programs

related to water chemistry, water quality, invasive species, stewardship, and more. The lab offers dramatic

views of Lake Michigan and provides an inspirational environment where we can educate students and the

public and help launch future careers.

Discovery World visitors explore the value of water by examining

the critical role that freshwater plays in creating products

that we use every day in the MillerCoors Thirst Lab.

Programs for the public and students highlight

freshwater as a key ingredient in most products,

using interactive labs to explore the creation

and production of food, tea, soda, candy,

perfumes and soaps. Our popular adult brewing

programs allow members of the community to

work with local master brewers to create their

own tasty brew.

FRESHWATER SUSTAINABILITY

Discovery World’s Reiman Aquarium experience begins in the chilly freshwater of Lake Michigan and takes

visitors all the way to the warm, soothing shores of the Caribbean Sea. Along the way, guests are introduced

to aquatic species who are native to freshwater and saltwater throughout the United States. Thousands

of visitors young and old get up close and personal with sharks, rays and lake sturgeon in the Discovery

World touch tanks. In 2016, guests had their first full year to experience Weird & Wild, a new feature that

showcases strange and wondrous freshwater species from all around the world. Sponsored by PPG, these

tanks feature poison dart frogs, a terrifyingly wonderful alligator snapping turtle, piranhas and brilliant and

beautiful freshwater fish from Asia, Africa and South America.

THE REIMAN AQUARIUM

Docked just outside Discovery World is the only re-creation of a 19th century three-masted Great Lakes

schooner in the world, the Sailing Vessel (S/V) Denis Sullivan. The ship was built by nearly 1,000 dedicated

volunteers who generously gave more than one million hours over five years to see their grand vision

become a breathtaking reality. Discovery World welcomes school groups, organizations, and families to

engage in informative tours, educational public sails, and overnight expeditions. Those participating had

access to hands-on, freshwater science curriculum combined with the technical teachings of learning to

sail a tall ship.

In July and August of 2016, the S/V Denis Sullivan took part in the

Tall Ships Challenge on the Great Lakes. Along with other tall

ships, the S/V Denis Sullivan visited Duluth, MN • Green

Bay, WI • Chicago, IL • Bay City, MI • Fariport Harbor,

OH • Erie, PA • Toronto, ON and Brockville, ON.

Visitors were able catch a glimpse, step aboard

and even set sail on grand tall ships at each

port. In the end, the S/V Denis Sullivan touched

four of the five Great Lakes in 2016 sharing

Discovery World’s mission and passion

with many people outside of Milwaukee

and Wisconsin.

ALL ABOARD! THE S/V DENIS SULLIVAN –

WISCONSIN’S FLAGSHIP

Discovery World partners with fellow nonprofit organizations and schools to create and enhance STEM

education experiences for students and families in the metro Milwaukee community and beyond. These

partnerships deepen students’ understanding of the world of opportunities available to them right here in

their own backyards. From Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, Milwaukee Public Schools

and FIRST® Robotics teams, to regional collaborative efforts like Milwaukee Succeeds, and Beyond the Bell,

Discovery World has invited our STEM education experts to join forces with community experts to better

serve our local kids.

We are proud to partner with many local and regional foundations and corporations in order to provide

free and discounted admission to Discovery World and our STEM education programs to thousands of

students, educators, and families. Thanks to the generous gifts from Zilber Family Foundation, Kohl’s and

the Kohl’s Cares Field Trip Grant Program, PPG Foundation, Theodore W. Batterman Family Foundation,

Catholic Financial Life, Time Warner Cable, Rockwell Automation, BMO Harris, M&I Foundation, Employ

Milwaukee, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Johnson Controls, and MilliporeSigma, Discovery World

provided free or discounted admission for visits, field trips, lab experiences, spring and summer camps

tuition, and memberships to schools, students, and families.

Fred Luber – In MemoriamIn January 2016, longstanding Discovery World Board Member and supporter Fred Luber passed away at the age of 90. In his work with Discovery World and other community organizations, Fred was a passionate advocate for innovation, creativity, entrepreneurship and education. Fred was a quiet leader who didn’t need to dominate the conversation but was never shy about sharing where he stood and how to keep the organization and the community moving forward. We treasured Fred’s energy and commitment to Discovery World, and we commit to continuing to forge ahead with the work that he inspired and supporters in his many years on our Discovery World Board.
