Centennial Hoists Blue Trophy for Hawks First Softball Title

In the ‘IF’ game of the 2016 Fuddruckers State 5A Softball Championships the Centennial Hawks (25-6) beat the Aztec Tigers (27-7), 1-0, to earn the school’s first state title in the sport of softball. Centennial lost early in the day to Aztec 6-1 to force the ‘IF’ game between the two schools.

It was a pitchers’ duel, as the Hawks’ Santana Parra allowed no runs on eight hits with five strike-outs in seven innings, while the Tigers’ Paige Adair gave up just one run on four hits and six strikeouts.

Defense and pitching were the story early in the game as both teams would put runners on base in the first three innings of play but could not push base runners across home plate.

Then, in the top of the fourth, Centennial’s Nicole Guillen hit a lead-off home run over the center field wall to give her team the 1-0 lead. The Hawks would threaten again by loading the bases but Adair buckled down and retired the side.

In the bottom of the fourth, Aztec put runners at the corners with two outs before Parra forced a groundout to the short stop to end the inning.

After a quick fifth inning by both teams at the plate, Aztec threatened again in the bottom of the sixth with runners at first and second, following two straight singles with one out. Parra again got herself out of a jam, striking out Alaina Sayler for out number two and forcing a ground out to second to end the inning, as the Hawks led 1-0 going into the seventh.

Centennial put runners at first and second with two outs in the top of the seventh but Adair forced a pop-up to third to end the threat. The Tigers, needing at least one run to force extra innings went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, as Centennial won 1-0 in the 5A softball championship game.
