2016 Annual Report

It just keeps getting better. Since the HDR Foundation was created in 2012, we’ve grown exponentially. From grant money distributed to employee contributions – 2016 was our best year yet.

This report tells the story of our foundation in 2016. But it’s much more than numbers. You can see the impact we created in the communities where we live and work, and the people behind that impact. More than anything, you can see that at HDR, we have a passion for giving back, and that is exemplified by the HDR Foundation.

A Message from the Chairman

It was another great year for the HDR Foundation. We not only continued to see growth in donations and grant money distributed, but we also saw increased engagement from our employees.

Our Ambassador Program had an inaugural class of 23 employees who were tasked with growing awareness of the HDR Foundation.

These ambassadors hold regular events and assist employees through the grant application process.

In addition, we created an at-large position on the Grant Giving Committee as a way to involve more employees in the foundation. We also added a young professional seat to the HDR Foundation Board of Directors.

We’re happy to announce that we will add an executive director for the HDR Foundation in 2017. This individual will bring strategic vision to our foundation and help us adapt with our growth.

I thank all of our employees for helping the HDR Foundation find success. I enjoy seeing the impact that every one of our employee contributors is helping to create within HDR and our communities.

Our Financials

1 | Turning Desire into DesignVolunteers from the Omaha office have been working with the NorthStar Foundation for nearly three years. As boys would age out as high school students, they slowly returned, wanting to continue in the program. To help those students, HDR employees helped the boys design their own multifunction room. As a surprise at the end of the design process, the HDR Foundation provided the funding for the project, which turned a former storage room into the hangout and study space of the boys’ dreams.

2 | Packing with a PunchDuring HDR’s Resources Business Group Conference in October 2016, hundreds of HDR employees and their families spent two hours packaging more than 100,000 meals for Kids Against Hunger. With Darryl Shoemaker as the employee sponsor, the HDR Foundation gave a $12,500 small grant to fund half of the meals for the event, which was the largest ever for the organization.

3 | Building Bridges Five HDR volunteers, led by employee sponsor Daryn Hobbs, will work alongside five employees from PCL Construction to help Bridges to Prosperity construct a foot bridge in Panama. The community will have much-easier access to vital resources because of the bridge. The HDR Foundation grant will fund the project materials, and the volunteers will manage the project and travel to Panama for the final two weeks of construction.

5 | Students of Skiing Andrew Dougherty, a former professional skier turned HDR employee, helped Nordic Journeys receive a $15,000 grant to purchase skis, boots, bindings and poles for two schools in rural Alaska. Nordic Journeys helps foster health and recreation for students across Alaska by encouraging them to be active in cross-country skiing, bringing in Olympic skiers and elite high school coaches to teach these kids skills that can last a lifetime.

6 | Cooking up ConnectionsMeals on Wheels Central Texas was in need of a new kettle to help cook the 545,000 meals that it delivers annually to nearly 3,000 central Texans, most of whom are elderly or disabled. The HDR Foundation’s $21,104 grant paid for a new 60-gallon, stainless steel kettle, which will help employee sponsor Noel Gonsalvez continue delivering meals for the organization – just as he has for nearly three decades.

4 | Sustainable ScoutsIn the second-largest grant ever given by the HDR Foundation, The Boy Scouts of America’s Heart of America Council will use the $80,000 to design and construct “green pod” campsites at Camp Bartle in Missouri. The sustainable design will provide permanent, level and well-drained sites seeded with native grasses to control runoff, manage erosion and prevent sediment from entering the region’s creeks and streams. The conservation plan will set the national standard for the Boy Scouts of America, said HDR’s Kevin Keller, a longtime volunteer with the Heart of America Council.

7 | On Deck for LearningEmployee sponsor Tina Gurdikian helped Bluff Lake Nature Center, a nonprofit in Denver, Colorado, receive a $16,000 grant to build a deck that will create safe access to Sand Creek for hundreds of school children who visit Bluff Lake every year. The deck will also provide seating and storage for educational equipment purchased by the grant.

8 | Growing the GardenCommunity Housing of Wyandotte County takes vacant, broken down homes or lots in Kansas City, Kansas, and restores them for homebuyers or community use. One of those restorations was Splitlog Urban Farm, which benefits a local elementary school and the surrounding community. With the HDR Foundation grant, Splitlog Urban Farm added an orchard, green space, irrigation system, educational pavilion and more.

9 | Supplies in DemandThe $15,000 grant helped Minnesota Literacy Council purchase 31 Chromebook laptop computers to replace outdated units across its three locations. The organization helps individuals in the Twin Cities prepare for the GED exam by using volunteer teachers. One of those volunteers is employee sponsor Monica Peterson, who teaches science.

12 | Prosperous Preserve Capitol Land Trust redeveloped the trail at Randall Preserve thanks to its $14,890 grant, complete with a digital informational kiosk, three new benches and crushed shell and signage for the trail. The additions to the trail will provide educational opportunities for the community and the nearby elementary school and college.

13 | Kits for Kids Our $15,000 grant to the Apollo-Ridge Education Foundation went to the purchase of VEX Robotics kits and additional supplies to support STEM education in the Apollo-Ridge School District in Spring Church, Pennsylvania. The school uses the supplies to teach eighth-grade students a new STEM-based curriculum to encourage and inspire students to pursue more advanced high school courses, and possible careers in STEM-related fields.

10 | Taking the ReinsHeartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy in Gretna, Nebraska, uses equine-based therapy to improve physical and emotional quality of life for individuals with disabilities. HETRA’s $15,000 grant was used to grade and surface more than 11,000 square feet of a walkway and parking. Now the organization’s clients will not have to trek through rugged terrain that can be difficult for those using wheelchairs, walkers or braces.

11 | Medical Gone MobileCornbelt Diabetes Connection used its $15,000 grant to help purchase a new Mobile Diabetes Center, which is staffed by nurses and students from Nebraska Methodist College. The new Winnebago helped provide alternative healthcare delivery methods to test people with diabetes or related complications.
