a transformative musical that will shatter the myth of Jews being immune to addiction.

By interweaving a Passover Seder with personal stories of addiction, Freedom Song poses one stark question- “WHAT

ARE YOU A SLAVE TO?”

Sunday April 2, 20179:15 AM

Gordon Jewish Community Center

“Freedom Song is the most powerful and emotional performance that every parent and teenager should see

together”

“I love how they put the Seder and AA meeting side-by-side. By the end of the play, I realized that recovering addicts

and Jews aren’t so different…we have both been enslaved and we both celebrate freedom”

JFS brings this educational program to the community in partnership with all area synagogue religious schools, BBYO with funding from The Jewish Federation of Nashville and

Our Honorees of the Year

Howard Kirshner, receiving the 2016 Chesed Award from his daughters and sister.

Lisa Small, 2016 Chesed honoree with family.

A year of new programs and education“When Push Comes To Shove: It’s No Longer Love”

which addressed the issue of dating abuse among today’s teen population. The program provided the 49 local high school students who attended the opportunity to learn how to recognize the signs of dating abuse. It also gave them the tools needed to safely and effectively respond should the issue arrive in their own lives as well as the lives of their peers.

JFS co-sponsored a free educational seminar for vet-erans of all ages, surviving spouses and concerned family

members. This program, “Making the Most of Veterans Benefits”, provided the over 50 plus in attendance with guidance regarding how the VA system works, how to navi-gate the application process, how to maximize VA benefits, and provided resources for caregivers.

JFS continued its dedication to our senior population with our annual Senior Seder. This joyous event, attended by 53 seniors, is an opportunity for them to share the mean-ing of the holiday with others and is an event everyone looks forward to every year. •

Employee Spotlight: Employee Spotlight: Toni Jacobsen

is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has been an integral part of Jewish Family Service since 2000.

How is working at Jewish Family Service different from another social service agency?

Jewish Family Service has given me the flexibility and creativity to meet the needs of my clients and the greater community in a way that I would not be able to if I was at an-other social service agency. I love that I can go the extra mile for my clients.

You are not Jewish. What has your experience been like working as a non-Jewish social worker in a Jewish community?

The Jewish community has been good to me in many ways. They ac-cepted me as an “honorary tribe mem-ber” right away. As a single person in a town without any family, I gained many Jewish mothers looking after me and giving me advice along the way. And when I adopted my daughter, Anna Kate, she inherited many bubies to love and care for her. She has grown up surrounded by this community and the love it has to share with us.

Why did you go into the profession of being a Licensed Clinical Social Worker?

As a child, I always knew that I wanted to help people and espe-cially children. I thought I wanted to be a nurse for a long time and then I learned that I would have to hurt the children sometimes in order to help them so I changed my mind. It did not take me long to find the field of social work and it has been a good fit for me.

What are some of your most memorable moments of working at JFS?

I have so many memorable mo-ments at JFS it is hard to say, but two particularly stand out.

I do recall the most precious gift I received from a child. A seven year old boy came to see me after school and he was so excited about the hol-iday celebration they had at school. He was wearing baggy overalls that needed to be washed. He had a great

supporting our community one child, one adult, one family at a time4

big smile on his face as he pulled out a crumbling, unwrapped cookie from his pocket that he saved just for me. My heart melted.

Another memorable moment is with a young adult I worked with for one year. Honestly, I was a bit scared of him at first because he was large and rough around the edges. I found that our work required a bit of moth-ering from me and I often told him to tuck in his shirt, be monogamous and to stop selling drugs for extra money. He took my advice to heart and later completed his MBA and became the director of a non-profit agency. He called me for many years afterwards to tell me how he was doing and thanked me for the advice I gave him. He did not come from a family that taught him basic relationship skills and he was very grateful for it.

In your opinion, what is the most im-portant work that this agency does?

The most important thing to me is not what we do but how we do it. The basic principles that we operate on and the expectation of treating everyone as an equal is paramount. It doesn’t matter how much money a person has, what religion they practice or what their family looks like. We serve everyone with the same respect.

You created a named fund to mark your 15-year anniversary at JFS. Why did you choose to create named fund?

I decided to create a named fund for several reasons. The first is be-cause it warms my heart when peo-ple make a contribution to JFS in my honor so I wanted to give people a way to do just that. The second is that I wanted to set an example for my daughter and give her something to be proud of. I hope that one day my grandchildren will contribute to my fund and remember the good work I have been able to do at JFS. The third reason is that I care about the services that JFS provides and I want it to con-tinue for many years.

What is the fund named and why did you choose that name?

I named my fund the Toni Jacob-sen, Psalm 103.2, Greatest Need Fund. Psalm 103.2 reminds us to “never for-get a single blessing.” My family and friends will contribute to the fund to honor the blessings we have received from this community and I hope that others will do the same. So I humbly ask if you have received a blessing from the work of JFS or know of someone who has, please consider making a contribution to the fund to formally recognize that. •

Jewish Family Service offers educational program for teens on dating abuseOn Sunday, January 10, fifty teens

in grades 9 through 11 gathered at the Gordon Jewish Community Center for “When Push Comes to Shove—It’s No Longer Love”, a dating abuse pro-gram developed by Jewish Women International that focuses on healthy relationships and awareness. Co-facili-tated by Alan Mazer and Freya Sachs, the program goals were to enable par-ticipants to:

1. Recognize the dynamics of healthy relationships

2. Understand the dynamics and warning signs of abu-sive relationships

3. Understand the barriers to leaving an abuser

4. Be empowered to raise awareness about dating abuse and promote healthy relationships

5. Understand and value their role as active bystanders in the fight to break the si-lence surrounding dating abuse

Due to the importance of the topic, the religious school directors of our local synagogues made their students available to attend the program in lieu of attendance at religious school that day. Upon arrival, the teens took a quiz that tested their knowledge of dating abuse prevalence and impact, followed by a brief discussion of the statistics. They were shown a DVD in which actual victims of dating abuse and domestic violence spoke about their experiences. In the debriefing that followed, an actual “ripped from the headlines” story of abuse was used as a current real life example of relationship violence. The teens were provided significant time to share their thought, feelings and questions

and to participate in exercises that helped them incorporate what they were learning. Teens reported that the program was very impactful. Quotes from evaluations after the program included ““Abuse is more common than I had realized”, “Anyone can be an abuser” or “Emotional abuse is just as prevalent as physical abuse”. One attendee commented that “I was amazed by the statistics to learn how prevalent abuse is. When I stop to think that 1 in 3 teens are victims of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner I realized that these numbers represent actual people, people that I may know. It is very sobering.”

This program was part of JFS’ Family Life Education services. Past topics have included Suicide Preven-tion, Cyberbullying, and Drunk and Distracted Driving. The overarching goal of each of these programs is: ed-ucate to prevent. This year’s program certainly achieved that goal. •

JFS engages youth

Tzofim counselors from Camp Davis bake cookies and pack Kosher Food Boxes

Our community’s youth are an inspiring bunch, giving tzeda-

kah and volunteering time for many wonderful causes. We have the good fortune to see their generosity first hand when they give back to others through Jewish Family Service. Here are some of the great things that the children, pre-teens and teenagers of this community are doing through JFS, so that you can schep the nachas along with us.

At bar and bat mitzvah receptions where guests eat their fill, many teens are decorating the tables not with

flowers that will be thrown away a few days later, but with food package centerpieces that will be donated to our Kosher Food Box Program so that others may eat too.

The past two years, BBYO has co-ordinated a food drive for the Kosher Food Box Program in conjunction with the pre-screening of the Hunger Games movies.

And then there was one young girl who, after receiving many gifts at her birthday, decided to donate some of those games to JFS to give to kids that don’t have as much as she does.

Financial support is not the only way these kids are helping JFS carry out its mission of service and lov-ing-kindness (chesed).

Noya Joseph donates some of her birthday gifts

Many volunteer to pack Kosher Food Boxes. Others lead Shabbat services with their families for elderly Jews in assisted living facilities, making that the highlight of the senior’s week.

Come Hanukkah, many will join their parents shopping, not only for gifts for their own family, but to pick up an extra toy or coat for children whose families cannot afford to buy Hanukkah gifts themselves, and who receive support from JFS’s Hanukkah Gift program.

We have some amazing kids, being raised by wonderful families, in a generous and caring community. Be-cause we teach our kids the values of tzedakah and chesed, they are teach-ing us these same values in return. •
