2016 State Summer Games

May 20, 2016 Welcome to State Summer Games! On behalf of the Special Olympics Georgia family, thank you for joining us at Opening Ceremony. Tonight, we celebrate the hard work, dedication and good sportsmanship of nearly 2,800 Special Olympics Georgia athletes, coaches and unified partners. We hope that you become inspired as you watch the Flame of Hope make its way through the hands of law enforcement officers and Special Olympics Georgia athletes. We are confident that you will feel excitement and admiration throughout the weekend as you cheer on athletes in aquatics, athletics, flag football, gymnastics, soccer, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. When you witness the decoration of athletes with bronze, silver and gold medals, along with ribbons, and see the smiling athletes exude confidence from a game well-played, we hope you are reminded that this weekend celebrates all athletes for their efforts, determination, teamwork and bravery. This weekend also brings about an opportunity for athletes with and without disabilities to be united and accepted on the same playing field. As you join us this weekend, please share your experiences with your family and friends. Do not hesitate to capture the 2016 State Summer Games with your cameras and smart phones. Please share those moments on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the official Special Olympics Georgia hashtag: #SOGASummerGames. Volunteers, we would like to thank you for all of your efforts to carry out the responsibilities to make this weekend a success. We must also recognize the Summer Games Organizing Committee members who have dedicated so much time over the last few months to provide a great experience for all. Finally, we would like to thank all of our sponsors, individuals and foundations, whose support has made the 2016 State Summer Games possible, and Emory University for their tremendous support and lasting partnership with the Special Olympics Georgia family. Athletes, we wish you the best of luck and encourage you to do your best. We’re cheering for you! Sincerely,

Georgia Milton-Sheats Chief Executive Officer

LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN

The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is the largest annual fundraising effort to benefit Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA). This signature event plays a significant role in SOGA’s annual fundraising and awareness. LETR involves law enforcement officers from across the state who work year-round to raise funds and awareness for SOGA athletes. LETR set a record in 2015, raising more than $864,000! In addition, officers also run the Flame of Hope into the Opening Ceremony of State Summer, Masters Bowling, Fall, and Winter Games each year. The top five fundraising departments have the honor of carrying the Flame of Hope during the Games and lighting the cauldron.

The Presenting Sponsor of the Law Enforcement Torch Run is Publix Super Markets. Each January for three weeks, Publix associates sell torch icons in their store to raise money.

Opening Declaration: Buddy Curry, Grand Marshal

George “Buddy” Curry is a former NFL Linebacker drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 1980. During his rookie season, Buddy led the Falcons to their first NFC Division Title in franchise history and was honored as the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year. In 1983, he made 229 tackles, setting the still unbroken franchise record for most tackles in a single season. Buddy retired in 1988 as a two-time Pro Bowler and was featured as one of the Top 50 Falcons by the Atlanta Journal Constitution last year.

Buddy’s efforts in the community are just as notable as his Falcon statistics. In 2002, Buddy and his wife, Dawn, teamed up with former teammate Bobby Butler to found Kids & Pros, Inc., a non-profit organization that brings NFL retirees to youth football athletes to teach football fundamentals and character development. He also serves as an ambassador and a master trainer for USA Football’s Head’s Up Football Program, teaching youth athletes proper tackling techniques to help lessen the occurrence of injuries such as concussions on the football field.

Buddy is excited to share his positive influence and join Special Olympics Georgia as the 2016 State Summer Games Grand Marshal.
