Acknowledged Wynn Storton as District Governor of the year. We need to listen to our young people and pass on our Ahepa values.

G Guest speaker John Galanis Supreme President from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ahepa’s challenge is to interest more young people. Discussed his travels to Europe and the Holy Land. The name of Ahepa is respected by the officials he met with in those places. Ahepa chapters in Europe are enthusiastic and successful. 911 site in NYC where St. Nicholas Shrine is located attracts 25,000 visitors per day. Ahepa will contribute $1,000,000 to the shrine. To the Honorable District Governor Storton and members of the District 20Lodge:

In this last fiscal year I attended 6 initiations, including one in Phoenix forthe Sons of Pericles, attended, with Supreme Governor Johannides andanother Chapter 275 brother, a special dinner in Phoenix with Ahepans andDaughters in attendance to discuss matters of concern to us all, I havevisited members of the Sacramento and Albuquerque chapters (outside of D-20 but I happened to be there) and have learned that my concerns overrecruiting are shared.

We in District 20 have had a successful year, evidenced by Bro. Stortonreceiving the District Governor of the Year award, and the momentum needsto continue forward.

I would like to see two things happen:

1) A motivational speaker for the scholarship banquet – my favorite is RonHeagy, a quadraplegic due to a surfing accident at age 18 who has puthimself through graduate school, goes around the country lecturing onpositive thinking and overcoming obstacles, not letting your circumstancesget you down and keep moving forward no matter what; Ron is now anaccomplished mouth painter and his works give no clue that he did themwith brush-in-mouth — he’s a totally up beat sort of guy and what he has tosay would be of tremendous interest to those in attendance – there’s only somuch name reading and serial thank you speeches that one can stand; howabout something helpful to the scholarship winners and their familes?

2) Let’s hear from those successful at recruiting – what works? What is yourelevator speech? What doesn’t work? Right now the chapters are prettywell left on their own to figure out how to recruit; my emphasis when I waschapter president was to recruit the younger set; as we have no SOP chapteractive in Tucson, go after the 18 & up group, which has worked for us. Iwas succeeded as chapter president by a new member (age 21) that Irecruited when he was 19 for example.

The other point to be made is one need not be Greek, Orthodox, or both tojoin AHEPA – at the conclusion of every meeting I conducted and wheneverI’ve spoken to AHEPA family groups, I point out that we’re recruitingCHRISTIAN men that we would like to have in the fraternity; as a result wehave two non-orthodox brothers in Tucson that are doing magnificent workfor the chapter and are quite active – brothers I recruited from outside theorthodox family.

I also make a point as to who are not Christians and don’t recruit from thesesources – Mormons, Jehovas’ Witnesses, Jews, Muslims of course andathiests or anyone else that does not share our belief in the Holy Trinity. Not that these people are “bad” – not at all – it is required in our by-lawsthat all members be Christian.

It has been my honor to serve the lodge for another year and I will bepleased to continue.
