After the overwhelming success of our previous guides for artists and collectors, we were encouraged to put together another helpful supplement that includes two sets of listings. One assembles the names and contact information for ORGANIZATIONS of plein air painters, by state, and the other lists outdoor painting EVENTS, by state, with

appropriate contact information. Organizations and events that purchased display advertising were entitled to longer listings. We worked hard to include every organization and event we could find, but we know we missed some, especially those just

getting started. If you are part of an organization or you know about an event we missed, please let us know directly or ask a representative of the group to send us information. We want to include every group and event that is spreading the joy of outdoor painting in the Guide, whether they are small or large, new or well established.

Everyone on the PleinAir team is deeply involved in the community as participating artists, event organizers, appreciative collectors, and/or willing supporters, so we do our work out of a sense of passion and service. Our publisher, editors, sales managers, and support staff are eager to help you succeed, and we are always available to lend a hand to your organizations and events. That help might include recommending judges, offering prizes, suggesting promotions, sending issues, or publicizing your activities in the magazine (print and digital) and the PleinAir Today free weekly e-newsletter.

As part of that passion and service, we offer an informative website where you can get current news and events and sign up for the PleinAir Today newsletter (www.outdoorpainter.com), as well as a series of bimonthly PleinAir Salon competitions to recognize some of the best artists and give them cash and international recognition (www.pleinairsalon.com). We also stage the annual Plein Air Convention & Expo, where artists, collectors, and suppliers can meet their friends and heroes face-to-face. The 5th annual convention is scheduled for April 15-19, 2016 in Tucson, Arizona (www.pleinairconvention.com).

We encourage artists to share the joy by introducing plein air painting to individuals and groups in your community. To make it easy, we offer a free video on the history of plein air painting and a directory of contacts (www.paintoutside.com). Finally, we encourage artists who are joining our community by offering instruction through our expanding DVD program (www.streamlinevideo.com). It’s all available to help you enjoy outdoor painting even more.

Happy painting!

What Is the Plein Air Force?

Eric Rhoads, publisher of PleinAir magazine, unveiled a new program, the Plein Air Force, at the Plein Air Convention &

Expo in April 2015. Convention attendees — and everyone else — were wondering what he was up to, as somewhat cryptic notes had been posted online and served up in e-mails over the few months before. After some theatrics, with Rhoads and others coming onstage in bomber jackets, Rhoads announced his plan. And now we know: The Plein Air Force is a program to help painters spread the word about plein air painting, and in the process, everyone benefits. How?

“Because plein air painting has become a major part of my life, and probably your life, shouldn’t you and I try to find a way to help others find it?” Rhoads asked. “That’s the idea behind the Plein Air Force. It’s an orchestrated effort to enlist you to spread the word about plein air painting in your town — helping increase awareness while others learn about plein air painting and plein air collecting. Think about what we can accomplish

together: We can bring joy to thousands of people by bringing them plein air painting.” The Plein Air Force has many components. There is a website for experienced painters (www.pleinairforce.com), where they can get tools such as speaking scripts to use when addressing civic, church, and art groups; easel stickers; and brochures to help spread the word. The biggest effort, however,

is a documentary Rhoads wrote and produced about plein air painting, called Outside the Lines. The documentary is designed to be played by painters speaking at various events to help encourage others to consider painting as a hobby or career. This 40-minute, “PBS-style” documentary starts with the history of plein air and ends up discussing the modern movement and how the viewer can learn painting. It points consumers to a website (www.paintoutside.com) designed to help newcomers try plein air painting. The site offers free painting lessons and other resources for learning to paint, as well as a directory so people can find local artists in their market who can serve as instructors. The site also offers a listing of “paint buddies” by area; this is a tool for painters who’d like to connect with other artists when visiting different areas. Rhoads has asked all plein air painters to register in one or both directories — both are free to join — or to at least join the Plein Air Force. “The whole thing is about encouragement,” Rhoads said during the program’s rollout. When

Eric Rhoads addresses new enlistees at PACE.Eric Rhoads explains the mission of the Plein Air Force in a welcome video available at PleinAirForce.com and on DVDs available to “enlistees.”

artists take the time to address groups, when a plein air painter is willing to pause when working on location to explain what he or she is doing and share the URL for PaintOutside.com, the Plein Air Force is succeeding. At the convention, Rhoads made it easy for attendees to sign up for the Plein Air Force, and the crowd was quite responsive.

And why not? As Rhoads points out, informing the general public about plein air painting — explaining what it is, how it’s done, and what it can do for the artist and the viewer — creates more appreciation for the genre, and also more collectors. This effort is a tide that raises all boats, perhaps especially for newcomers who try plein air painting thanks to the efforts of the Plein Air Force. As Rhoads explained at the convention, “Painting plein air has changed my life. Chances are it’s changed yours, too. Think about the lifestyle of plein air. You’re painting, and you’re using your creative abilities. You are spending time outdoors, in nature. Rather than taking photos like most people do, you become one with the scene. And you have paintings

to show for it and remember it by. It’s my goal to help others have that same experience. I think plein air painting makes life very fulfilling.” Charter members of the Plein Air Force (those in attendance at the convention) were given DVDs they can use in their own programs, and all of that content is also available at pleinairforce.com. Rhoads’s request is that enlistees in the Plein Air Force devote one hour a month to the cause.

“Convert one person a month,” he said. “We don’t want you to work too hard; you already have enough to do. But we want to help you get out in the world and spread the word about plein air painting. It’s all free, compliments of PleinAir magazine.” Of course, many plein air painters are already doing this. They’ll take the time to explain what they are engaged in out there in the sun, wind, bugs, and wild. Many are communicating why this activity is so addictive.

“The goal is to help people improve their lives through a plein air painting lifestyle,” says Rhoads. There’s plenty of room for everyone, from the stars of the plein air world to the journeyman and the hobbyist and the newbie. It’s about sharing. As Rhoads said at the convention, “By having a formal program and a place to encourage people to try painting and get free lessons, we’ll encourage more people who don’t think they have any talent. This will enrich lives.

“This life of plein air is too good to keep to ourselves.”

Eric Rhoads leads the Plein Air Force staff onto the stage at the Plein Air Convention & Expo during the launch of the new program.

Solomons Island offers artists such diversity in painting subject matter. This historic fishing village is now a picturesque mix of work boats, pleasure boats, marinas, old fishermen’s cottages, rural farmland, and quaint architecture, with a few shops scattered amongst historic waterfront buildings. Stand in one spot on the Solomons Riverwalk and you can paint these things and more. But the best part is the hospitality! Artists rave about the social events and warm reception they receive from the town. And great island weather, too!

Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment (SCAPE)Contact: Dorene WhiteE-mail: [email protected]: 805.886.7479Website: www.s-c-a-p-e.orgSouthern California Artists Painting for the Environment (SCAPE) was founded in 2002 in Santa Barbara, California, and has grown to over 200 members, a diverse group including nationally known and local artists, students, patrons, and even gallery owners. Membership is open to everyone who wants to participate. Our goals are to have exhibitions to help raise money to protect open spaces, to increase public awareness of environmental and conservation issues, and to promote camaraderie and provide education for artists. Our juried exhibitions have raised over $140,000 for environmental groups. We have monthly paint-outs and occasional demos and workshops. And we have fun!

Plein Air Artists Colorado Contact: Jennifer Riefenberg E-mail: [email protected] Phone: 303.250.2015 Website: www.pleinairartistscolorado.com Plein Air Artists Colorado (PAAC) was created for the love of plein air painting and for members to enjoy the camaraderie of painting outdoors. A founding principle is that PAAC creates opportunities for artists of all levels to paint outdoors together on a regular basis. Membership is open to any artist living in the U.S. Our annual national juried exhibition offers examples of excellence in painting that can be achieved outdoors — “en plein air.” PAAC also offers over 250 paint-outs per year throughout Colorado and unique “destination” paint-outs in various states. Happy painting!

VPA came about in 2003 to serve our Venice area on the Southwest coast of Florida. We are local artists supporting our local arts and preserving historical scenic communities’ views. Anyone visiting our area who wishes to plein air paint with a group is welcome to join our MAPs. Due to schedule, we set up monthly MAPs with an invite to all. Saturday is important to keep on the schedule for those that are not able to meet during the week.

The Outdoor PaintersContact: Marsha SavageE-mail: [email protected]: 770.926.3623 Website: www.theoutdoorpainters.com Our purpose: to share travel to new locations, workshops, and weekend outings, and to mentor one another as outdoor artists. Time spent together creates a bond of friendship, as well as painting partners to call on for sharing a day or a weekend of plein air painting. This site is a resource for other outdoor painters, both in visual and written reviews from artists. We’d also like to give you the opportunity to share unique places that you’ve found in Georgia, news of plein air events, or any other information that you feel would be helpful to groups or individual outdoor painters.

The MVIS allows those who work in Impressionism to paint and exhibit together and is one of the few organizations in the Midwest that embraces the method of painting en plein air. The organization encourages, hosts, and sponsors plein air paint-outs as well as atelier sessions, workshops, plein air competitions, and exhibitions throughout the year.

The Plein Air Painters of KentuckyContact: Jane MorganE-mail: [email protected]: 502.592.7835Website: www.janemorgangallery.comThe Plein Air Painters of Kentucky was founded in 1998 by Jane Morgan. There are 36 artists in this group; we paint one day a week from May through October each year. These paintings are then exhibited the next year in the Jane Morgan Gallery. In 2015 we painted in the Parklands of Floyds Fork in Louisville, Kentucky. We will have an exhibit of those paintings in the spring of 2016 in the Jane Morgan Gallery. We are partnering with the Parklands, so for every painting sold, the Parklands will receive a 20 percent donation, making this a win-win situation for all!
