Global Handwashing Day is a global advocacy day dedicated to celebrating andadvocating for handwashing with soap as an effective, affordable way to preventdiseases. It is an opportunity to design, test, and replicate creative ways toencourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times.
Each year on October 15, communities, advocates, and leaders spread the wordabout hand hygiene, build handwashing infrastructure, and demonstrate thevalue of handwashing with soap. Global Handwashing Day was founded in 2008by the Global Handwashing Partnership.

This theme emphasized the ways that properhandwashing helps to protect our health,achieve our goals, and contribute to thefutures of our communities and our world.
Handwashing with soap has benefitsbeyond short-term disease prevention. Itcan limit stunting in children, protect thehealth of patients, reduce inequities, andhelp communities build healthy futures.

In 2017, nearly 30 million people from 143 countries participated in events, and mass mediaprograms reached more than 218 million people. In addition, 275 million people learned abouthandwashing through social media and virtual campaigns. In total, Global Handwashing Daycelebrations reached more than 520 million people!

In partnership with the education departmentsin Badghis and Herat provinces, World Visionengaged 1,500 schoolchildren, who learned aboutthe importance of personal hygiene. During events,the Badghis Education Director paid tribute toteachers for their important role in teachingstudents about the importance of handwashingand helping them to improve habits.

In Manila, P&G celebrated Global HandwashingDay with 350 youth. In line with their 50-yeartradition of handwashing education, Safeguardlaunched a handwashing song performed byAlden Richards, to remind us when and how towash hands. P&G also reached more than 60million people through social media in both Chinaand the Philippines.

Unilever, a co-founder of Global HandwashingDay, continued its Lifebuoy campaign to unitesupporters of child health to champion goodhygiene habits. For every picture or video with ahigh five, Lifebuoy pledged help educate fivechildren on proper handwashing in 2018. Withover 70,000 high fives, this campaign reachedmore than 88 million people over social media.Learn more here about the Lifebuoy campaign.

In two locations, Centro de Salud Familia heldinteractive activities for visitors, center officials,and students from the Centro de FormaciónTécnica. Students taught visitors the importanceof proper handwashing and distributed soap. Ahand hygiene competition was held for staff andstudents, evaluating various clinical hand hygienetechniques. In total, CESFAM reached 200 peoplethrough events.

The City of Cape Town Environmental HealthDepartment organized a monthlong campaign toencourage handwashing to prevent the spread ofdiarrheal disease. 1,200 people were reached at childdevelopment centers, primary schools, health clinics,and in informal settlements. With events taking placeduring a drought, a water-saving handwashing deviceentitled the Squeeze Bottle, was promoted duringevents.

WaterAid India’s #HandwashingHelps campaignencouraged people to share their own messagesacross social media platforms. The campaign’swebsite detailed the importance of handwashing,and shared facts and messages. The team alsocreated a video, Saving Plate: What do you bringto the table? to get people to think about thegerms they bring with them when they don't washhands before eating.

#HandwashingHelps stop germs in India
World Vision hosted a webinar on October 11to highlight the WASHUP! program. In partnershipwith Sesame Workshop, this interactive school-and center-based program uses multimedia topromote educational materials that teach childrenand caregivers about positive and healthy WASHbehaviors. Success Stories in 2017Handwashing with UNICEF in Ukraine
UNICEF celebrated at a primary school in the villageof Myrnyi, in southern Ukraine. 120 students andteachers learned about effective handwashingpractices. A team of animators led an informationalsession, a theatrical performance, and a soapbubble show. Afterward, children received giftbags with hygiene messages and supplies.
