Introduction

IntroductionThestatisticsinthelatesteditionoftheAHDBBeef&Lambyearbookshowthat2015wasadifficultyearforthesheepsector,withhighlevelsofproductionandtestingexportconditionsleadingtolowpricelevels.

Theweatherwasgenerallyconsideredtobeexcellentthroughouttheyear,withmildweatheracrossthecountryatboththestartandendof theproductionyear,aiding lambsurvivalrates.Thefinesummerresulted ingoodpastureconditionsandcosts forbought-in feedcontinuedtofall.

Priceswere,onaveragebelowthelevelsseenin2014,thiswasdespitepricesinthefirstquarteroftheyearbeinglevelwith2014,asthenormalseasonalupliftinpricesduringlatespringandearlysummerwasnotseen.Pricesthenremainedbelowyear-earlierlevelsformuchoftherestoftheyear.Cullewesbegan2015atrecordlevelsduetotightsupplies,pricesdidfallastheseasonprogressedbutremainedathighlevelsaslowslaughteringscontinued.

TheresultsoftheAHDBBeef&LambStocktakebenchmarkingreportfor2014continuedtoshowthatmarketpriceswerebelowtheaveragecostofproduction.Assuch,theindustryremainedreliantonotherformsofincomeduring2014.Productionin2015begantheyearaheadoflevelsseenayearearlier,atrendwhichcontinuedformuchoftherestoftheyear,beforedeclininginthefinalquarteroftheyearduetoadeclineinthesizeofthelambcropin2015.

Importvolumesfortheyearasawholewerelevelwiththepreviousyear,withshipmentsgenerallyseeinglargeincreasestowardstheendoftheyear.NewZealandremainedbyfarthelargestsupplieroflambtotheUK,withvolumesincreasingduringtheyear.Whileimportvolumesremainedstable,thevalueoftheproductsshippedtotheUKwasdownin2015.TherehavebeendoubtsraisedovertheaccuracyofthedataregardingexportsfromtheUKin2015astheyshowalargedeclineinvolumesbeingshipped.

DefrafiguresshowingsheeppopulationsinDecember2015indicatecontinuedgrowthforoverallUKsheepnumbers,withthebreedingflockremainingstable.Followingthetrendseenin2014,muchofthegrowthwasinEngland,withdecreasesseeninScotland,WalesandNorthernIreland.

On the global scale, demand for sheep meat continues to generally follow the patternseen in recentyears,withdemand indevelopingcountries increasing,whiledemand forlambintraditionalmarketsseemstobefalling.However,theriseinChinesedemandseeninpreviousyearswas reversed in2015.TheUK lookswellplaced to takeadvantageofexpected supply constraints fromNewZealand, especially as the current weakening ofsterlingagainsttheeuro,willmakeUKproductmorecompetitiveontheEuropeanMarket.

Thecontentsofthe2016AHDBBeef&LambYearbookprovideyouwithanoverviewoffactsandfiguresfromthebeefandsheepsectorsduring2015.Wehopeitservesasausefulguideforindustryandwiderinterestedstakeholders.
