its waters can grant immortality. The Chinese have dwelled along

Remnants of some of the world’s most ancient

Vietnam, and Cambodia will leave you breathless. From
the magnificent white marble splendour of the Taj Mahal,
to the Great Wall and Forbidden City, to ancient Khmer
temples and grand colonial architecture, experience the
most iconic landmarks Asia has to offer. These man-made
gems are matched only by the region’s natural wonders,
such as India’s incredible birdlife and the dolphins that
frolic in the sacred waters of the Ganges River; the
Yangtze’s Three Gorges, whose mist-shrouded peaks
have inspired countless legends and myths; and the
Mekong—the “Mother of Water”—the aquatic lifeline
of Vietnam and Cambodia.
As captivating as these sights may be, the stories behind
them are sometimes even more compelling—the passions
and peculiarities of emperors, artisans, monks, and
warriors. The joys and sorrows, triumphs and tragedies
of Asia’s people are forever etched upon their land and
monuments, their villages and cities. We will share stories
of their inspiring spirit and remarkable resilience, as well

A journey through the “cradle of civilisation”
INDIA IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPLEX AND COLOURFUL
COUNTRIES YOU WILL EVER EXPERIENCE. DELVE INTO A
LAND THAT IS UNIMAGINABLY EXOTIC, A LAND OF DIZZYING
CONTRASTS, WHERE THE GHOSTS OF INDIA’S COLONIAL PAST
LINGER AMIDST MODERN-DAY CITYSCAPES, AND RICKSHAW
WALLAHS CONVERSE ON CELL PHONES.
Uniworld’s new 2016 itinerary in India highlights wondrous sights
along the country’s most venerated river, as well as must-see
destinations in Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur—the Golden Triangle—
one of the most culturally rich areas of the subcontinent.
India is one of the world’s oldest civilisations, stretching back five
thousand years. The holiest spot on the sacred Ganges—the city of
Varanasi—is considered the oldest continuously inhabited city on
earth. India is also credited for creating the world’s first university,
chess, yoga, martial arts, and the study of algebra and calculus.
A democratic and peaceful country, India gave birth to four of
the world’s greatest religions—Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism,
and Sikhism. Today, most Indians practice Hindusim, an all-
encompassing belief system and way of life, with a mind-boggling
pantheon of 330 million deities. Hindus believe in reincarnation
and karma—actions that determine one’s destiny and ultimately
lead to release from the endless cycle of rebirth. Understanding
Hinduism’s basic principles allows for a deeper appreciation of
the mesmerising cultural tapestry that comprises modern-day
India. You may feel more alive and connected here than anywhere
else on earth, and quite possibly come away forever changed.

“THIS IS INDEED INDIA; THE LAND OF DREAMS
AND ROMANCE . . . OF A THOUSAND RELIGIONS
AND TWO MILLION GODS, CRADLE OF THE
HUMAN RACE . . . THE ONE LAND THAT ALL MEN
DESIRE TO SEE.”
—Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)
With its colour-saturated bazaars and chic boutiques,
silent temples and clamourous city streets, genteel colonial
mansions and sleek modern buildings, few other places
offer such astounding variety as India.
Uniworld’s new 2016 “India’s Golden Triangle & the Sacred
Ganges” cruise and tour presents a broad spectrum of
remarkable travel experiences, a multi-layered masala
of languages, religions, cuisines, and cultural traditions.
Over the course of your journey, you will have many
authentic encounters with India’s soul-stirring festival
of human existence. Interact with the proud, generous,
and good-natured Indian people. Taste their amazingly
delicious cuisine. Step back in time as you admire India’s
colonial heritage in Delhi. Pay tribute to the legacies of
Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. Experience the
spectacle of Jaipur’s ageless bazaars, a treasure hunter’s
paradise. And gaze in awe at the Taj Mahal, a resplendent
tribute to everlasting love.
A SPECTACULAR SENSORY FEAST
Your knowledgeable Uniworld Cruise/Tour Managers
and expert guides will lift the veil on everyday life in
India, a sensory feast of exotic sights, sounds, aromas,
and tastes—Bollywood music crackling from a radio,
the sweet fragrance of marigold garlands, the pungent
tang of turmeric and tamarind, a glittering shrine to the
elephant-headed god Ganesh, the languid gaze of a
Brahman cow, young brides adorned with henna, their
turbaned husbands smiling behind elaborate moustaches.
In this extraordinary land—the land that pioneered the
cultivation of cotton—you will find yourself dazzled by a
multitude of vivid colours, India’s rainbow of luminescent
hues: the saffron robes of ascetic holy men, baskets of
scarlet tomatoes, indigo blue pottery, and delicate saris
of crimson and citrus and sapphire-coloured silk, fluttering
in the breeze like butterfly wings.
NORTHERN INDIA’S CULTURAL MOSAIC
The friendly, dignified, and tolerant Indian people are
as diverse as the rest of the subcontinent, with more
than two thousand ethnic groups speaking nearly as
many languages and dialects. In a land where Hindus,
Muslims, Christians, and Sikhs live in peaceful harmony,
you’ll encounter warm-hearted people who are quick to
laugh and eager to show you the many splendours of their
amazing country.

Stretching from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, the
Ganges is India’s holiest river, believed to hold eternal
salvation in every drop. In Hindu mythology, the goddess
Ganga descended from heaven to dwell in the waters of
the Ganges and to protect, purify, and bring to heaven
all those who touch it. Devout Hindus make daily visits
to the Ganges to drink and bathe, wash away their sins,
scatter the ashes of their loved ones, and make offerings
of flowers and incense to Mother Ganga.
INDIA FROM AN UP-CLOSE PERSPECTIVE
River cruising is the perfect way to experience the magic
of India. Life onboard offers ever-changing scenery,
elegant and comfortable surroundings, and an effortless
means of getting around.
Your voyage begins and ends in Kolkata on the Lower
Ganges. Over the course of eight days, you will have
unparalleled glimpses of life along the river—dreadlocked
yogis deep in meditation, wallowing water buffalos,
women scrubbing laundry, rice fields filled with silvery
water, and bright-eyed children waving at your ship. You
will visit small villages inaccessible by road and rarely
seen by outsiders—going ashore, you will often have
the place to yourself, free to walk amongst ruins and to
imagine fallen empires.
India is home to an amazing variety of wildlife, such
as Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, and leopards—even
freshwater dolphins, which can sometimes be seen
swimming alongside the ship in certain parts of the
Ganges. The delta is also a birdwatcher’s paradise
with more than 1,250 different species, including
mynah birds, colourful parrots, scarlet minivets, and
blue-tailed bee eaters.
THE GANGES VOYAGER II
The most luxurious river cruise ship serving the Ganges,
the Ganges Voyager II embodies all the refinement
of India’s colonial past, with air-conditioning, modern
conveniences, and a décor that rivals Asia’s finest hotels.
Savour 360-degree views from canopied chaise lounges
on the Sun Deck. Recount the day’s adventures over
cocktails in the lounge. Enjoy performances by local
musicians and dancers, and insightful lectures by local
experts. Indulge in a spa treatment or workout in the
fitness centre. Awaken each day in the comfort of your
spacious suite, and gaze at millions of stars from your
private balcony each night.
For more information on the ship, see pages 28–29.

KALNA’S RAJBARI TEMPLES
Often referred to as “Temple City,”
Kalna’s Rajbari complex has the
region’s densest concentration of
temples, including 108 intricately
carved structures devoted to
the Hindu god Shiva. One of the
best is the Pratapeshwar Temple,
decorated with richly detailed
terra-cotta plaques depicting
scenes from Hindu mythology.
JAIPUR’S CITY PALACE
The regal and romantic Pink
City of Jaipur is the gateway to
Rajasthan, famous for its imposing
forts, labyrinthine bazaars, and
pastel-coloured palaces. Of these,
City Palace—the residence of
Jaipur’s former royal family—is
one of the most magnificent,
with lovely courtyards, fountains,
and gardens.
KOLKATA’S COLONIAL
ARCHITECTURE
Kolkata has some of India’s
finest examples of colonial-era
architecture, such as the stark
white edifice of Victoria Memorial
Hall and the massive red brick
Writers’ Building, once used
to house the British East India
Company’s clerical staff.
AGRA’S TAJ MAHAL
The world’s most sublime mon-
ument to love, this white marble
tomb—built by Emperor Shah
Jahan in memory of his wife—is
almost unspeakably beautiful,
especially when viewed at sunrise
and sunset. Aptly described as
“an elegy in marble,” the Taj is
a cultural treasure, one of the
New Seven Wonders of the World.
MAYAPUR’S TEMPLE OF THE VEDIC
PLANETARIUM
The village of Mayapur—birthplace
of the founder of the Hare Krishna
movement—is also home to the
Temple of the Vedic Planetarium.
Currently under construction, this
enormous temple is designed to
make traditional Vedic philosophy
accessible to everyone.
DELHI’S HUMAYUN’S TOMB
Built in the 16th century by
Emperor Humayun’s grief-stricken
wife, this immense red sandstone
and white marble structure—India’s
first garden-tomb—inspired the Taj
Mahal with its perfect symmetry,
peaceful atmosphere, and fountains
and pools. A UNESCO World
Heritage Site, it is Delhi’s most
visited attraction.

VARANASI, INDIA
Experience one of the world’s oldest and most intriguing cities.
A swirl of colour and ritual and oddities galore,
Varanasi may very well be the most ethereal and
exotic place you will ever visit. Considered the
holiest spot on India’s holiest river, it is also one
of the world’s oldest cities—as ancient as Babylon
and Thebes. It is the goal of every devout Hindu
to come here at least once to purify body and soul
in the sacred waters of the Ganges.
Your visit includes a fascinating tour of this other-
worldly and intoxicating city, followed by a private
boat ride to observe a Ganga Aarti ceremony.
Led by a Hindu priest at sunset, this spellbinding
devotional ritual is performed in honour of the
goddess of the river, a spectacle you’ll remember
the rest of your days. You will also have an
opportunity to take a boat ride along the river
at sunrise, when hundreds of sari- and dhoti-clad
Hindus can be observed bathing, washing laundry,
performing yoga asanas, and making respectful
offerings to Mother Ganga along the broad stone
ghats lining the Ganges.
Magical and mystical, surreal and deeply spiritual,
Varanasi is a city that is truly unlike any other.
IN HINDU MYTHOLOGY, GANGA—THE GODDESS
OF THE RIVER—IS A CELESTIAL BEING WHO
DESCENDS TO THE EARTH TO RINSE AWAY THE
SINS OF HUMANKIND.

◀ The incomparable Taj Mahal, Agra, India ▶ Indian women at Humayun’s Tomb, UNESCO World Heritage Site, New Delhi, India
DAY 1 bNew Delhi
A Uniworld representative will greet you at the airport and transfer you to the regal Oberoi New Delhi hotel and resort, a luxurious retreat tucked away in the heart of India’s cosmopolitan capital.
DAY 2 u b BB D
New Delhi
FEATURED EXCURSION: India’s Capital City, Old and New
India’s seat of power for nearly a thousand years, Delhi bridges two distinctly different worlds—Old Delhi, the former capital, with its narrow lanes and splendid mosques; and New Delhi, established by the British, with wide tree-lined boulevards and handsome buildings.
Spend your first full day in India getting a pano-ramic overview of the city’s top sights, including the two-toned sandstone and marble Red Fort, which served as an imperial citadel until the last Moghul emperor was exiled. Stop to visit Humayun’s Tomb—inspiration for the UNESCO-designated Taj Mahal—and Raj Ghat, a black granite memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, India’s beloved father of independence.
Your initial encounters with the local residents will be equally compelling—proud and dignified, generous and quick to smile, the Indian people will rank amongst your favourite memories of this enchanting country.
DAY 3 u b BB L
New Delhi, transfer to Agra
FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Majesty and Grace— Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal
Transfer to Agra via a newly built expressway, and check in and enjoy lunch at the spectacular Oberoi Amarvilas. Later, visit one of India’s most majestic forts—Agra Fort—a palatial walled city containing russet sandstone buildings encircled by a deep moat.
Later, visit the Taj Mahal, and venture inside India’s most awe-inspiring and iconic monument. The fateful tale of love and loss that inspired the Taj is as incredi- ble as the tomb itself. Commissioned by the broken- hearted Emperor Shah Jahan after his beloved wife died in childbirth, this masterpiece of Islamic architecture took some 20 thousand labourers and artisans nearly two decades to complete (at a cost of more than A$1 billion in today’s money).
Your first glimpse of the Taj Mahal—perfectly timed to coincide with the setting sun—will literally take your breath away.
DAY 4 u b BB L
Agra, transfer to Jaipur
FEATURED EXCURSION: Sunrise at the Taj Mahal
Venture back to the Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the pristine white marble monument is aglow with the soft pink lustre of dawn. Seen in the magical first light of day, the graceful, dream-like Taj will forever linger in your memory, the sunrise you will henceforth compare to all others.
You will learn more about the mausoleum’s fascinating history, perfect proportions, precious building materials, and intricate craftsmanship.
Enjoy some free time before returning to the resplendent Oberoi Amarvilas resort for breakfast.
Transfer to Jaipur, the magnificent capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan, where you will check in at the beautiful Oberoi Rajvilas and relax over lunch at the hotel. If you wish, you may take a complimentary shuttle into town and make your initial foray into the city’s colourful bazaars.
DAY 5 u b BB D
Jaipur
FEATURED EXCURSION: Jaipur—Rajasthan’s Princely City
Your tour of the romantic Pink City of Jaipur includes the residence of the former royal family—City Palace—a sprawling complex with lovely courtyards and gardens. You will also visit the

UNESCO-designated Jantar Mantar, a centuries-old observatory housing the world’s largest sundial and a superb collection of astronomical instruments. Enjoy views of the nearby Hawa Mahal, with its multitude of windows and ornate façade, designed to resemble Lord Krishna’s crown.
Relax during the afternoon or take a complimentary shuttle into town to explore the city’s bazaars, which are overflowing with high-quality textiles, jewellery, gemstones, and richly embroidered leather jootis—traditional Rajasthani shoes.
DAY 6 b d e BB L WD
Jaipur, fly to Kolkata
FEATURED EXCURSION: Mother Teresa’s Home and Tomb
Transfer to the Jaipur Airport and fly to Kolkata, India’s second-largest city, a clamourous yet capti- vating metropolis situated on the Lower Ganges.
Before boarding your elegant all-suite ship, you will visit Mother Teresa’s former home, where the late Roman Catholic nun established the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. See her humble tomb and the room where she lived for 44 years, as well as an exhibit highlighting her life and work. You can also pay a visit to a nearby orphanage operated by the Missionaries of Charity.
Cap off the day with a Welcome Dinner, followed by a cultural performance onboard the Ganges Voyager II.
DAY 7 b S BB L D
Kolkata, Bandel
FEATURED EXCURSIONS: The Enduring Legacy of the British Raj
The former capital of the Raj, Kolkata offers intriguing glimpses of the “old India” of the British colonial period, including grand architecture such as the Writers’ Building, High Court, and General Post Office. Observe these and other key sights on your city tour, plus visit Kolkata’s oldest Anglican church and the Victoria Memorial Hall, a museum boasting India’s largest collection of colonial artefacts.
Return to the ship for lunch and a scenic cruise that passes a number of former colonial settlements. Later, take an excursion to Bandel to visit Hooghly Imambara, a mosque that’s a triumph of Bengali architecture.
DAY 8 S BB L D
Kalna
FEATURED EXCURSION: India’s “Temple City”
There is no better way to see the sights of Kalna than via an exhilarating trishaw ride through the heart of the city. Kalna’s Rajbari complex has the region’s densest concentration of temples, including 108 intricately carved, slope-roofed structures devoted to Shiva, the Hindu god.
Walk back to the ship, perhaps stopping at the bustling local market on the way.
DAY 9 BB L D
Matiari
FEATURED EXCURSION: Matiari Master Craftsmen
Enjoy a walking tour of Matiari, an artisans’ village revered for its finely wrought brassware, and venture inside a local home to observe master craftsmen at work.
If time allows, you may also have an opportunity to learn some of the nuances of the game of cricket— India’s favourite sport. There will also be time to shop for village-made goods at a small riverside bazaar.
Back onboard, roll up your sleeves for a mehndi demonstration—intricate henna designs typically painted on the palms of women’s hands to attract good luck.

DAY 10 S BB L D
Khushbagh, Baranagar, Murshidabad
FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Bengal’s Architectural Curiosities
Begin the day with an early morning stroll through the farmers’ fields of Khushbagh to a well-preserved complex built by one of the region’s former colonial-era rulers. Return to the ship for breakfast and a brief scenic cruise to Baranagar, a village with many ornately carved sandstone structures and temples dating back hundreds of years. Take a leisurely walk to absorb the rural atmosphere and a pace of life that is decidedly slower and less complicated.
Enjoy lunch back onboard the ship as you continue downstream to the fascinating city of Murshidabad. As you round the river’s bend, a most unexpected sight unfolds before you, an echo of an era long past—the massive Hazarduari Palace, famous for its thousand doors, both real and false, and its fine collection of antiques and British colonial artwork.
Climb aboard a horse cart for a lively ride to Katra Mosque, one of the largest and most interesting in the region, before returning to the ship. Indulge in a lovely dinner followed by the evening’s entertainment—a spirited Bollywood- style show with music and dancing.
DAY 11 S BB L D
Mayapur
FEATURED EXCURSION: Hare Krishna Complex and Temple of the Vedic Planetarium
After a scenic morning cruise, visit the welcoming and wildly colourful village of Mayapur, birthplace of the founder of the Hare Krishna movement.
One of India’s top pilgrimage sites, Mayapur is headquarters for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON), and millions of scholars and devout followers visit here every year. The village is also home to hundreds of second generation Hare Krishnas born to North Americans and Europeans who relocated to India back in the 1960s.
Dominating the skyline is the dome of a colossal Vedic temple, largely funded by the great- grandson of Henry Ford. Once completed in 2016, the temple will be twice the size of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and large enough to accommodate 10 thousand worshippers.
DAY 12 S BB L FD
Chandannagar, Kolkata
FEATURED EXCURSION: India’s French Colonial Heritage
A French colony for 275 years, from 1678–1950, Chandannagar is a fascinating place to visit because its cultural heritage and character are so very different from the rest of India (most of which fell under British rule).
The city is situated on a crescent-shaped bend of the river, views of which are best admired on a leisurely stroll along the Strand, Chandannagar’s waterfront promenade. The Strand also features many lovely colonial-era buildings that have stood the test of time, such as the former French governor’s residence and the Roman Catholic Sacred Heart Church.
Chandannagar’s intriguing dual nature is evident elsewhere in the city, such as the bakery that continues to bake authentic French-style baguettes in an old stone oven, and elementary schools that still teach both English and French, generations after the colonial rulers left India for good.
Spend your last evening onboard enjoying a Farewell Dinner.
DAY 13 e b CB/BB L

◀ Surreal rock formations along the Yangtze River, China ▶ Shibao Pagoda on the banks of the Yangtze, China
A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR COUNTLESS
CHINESE MYTHS AND LEGENDS, THE THREE
GORGES ARE SURE TO BE A HIGHLIGHT OF
YOUR YANGTZE RIVER CRUISE.
The Yangtze River has served as China’s aquatic highway
for centuries, flowing nearly 6,400 kilometres from the
Tibetan plateau to the East China Sea. Along its vast
length you will have fascinating glimpses of people living
and working in close proximity to the river, as well as
360-degree views of unforgettable scenery.
The highlight of your cruise will be the narrow, twisting
passageway through the Yangtze’s bewitching Three
Gorges. Renowned for their mystical beauty, the gorges
boast towering limestone walls, strange rock formations,
cloud-covered mountain peaks, and pristine water tinted
the essence of jade, its surface laced with delicate tendrils
of mist.
Qutang Gorge, the shortest and most dramatic, is deep
and narrow with near-vertical cliffs and stunning vistas
around every bend of the river. Here too are curious
cultural artefacts, such as the “suspended coffins” and
ancient relics hidden within the cliffs, left by the ethnic
minorities who dwelled along the river thousands of
years ago.
Wu Gorge cleaves through the breathtaking Twelve
Peaks, tall mountains with evocative names from Chinese
mythology, such as Climbing Dragon, Flying Phoenix, and
Gathering Cranes. Revered for the tranquil beauty of its
pine-covered slopes, the Wu Gorge also features surreal
rock formations that have inspired countless folk tales.
Xiling Gorge is the longest gorge, twisting and turning
through deep canyons, its sheer-sided walls soaring
heavenward like the nave of a vast natural cathedral.
Once feared for its dangerous reefs and turbulent rapids,
the treacherous nature of the Xiling Gorge has been
significantly tamed by the Three Gorges Dam.
The Three Gorges Dam—located midway through the
Xiling Gorge—is the world’s largest hydroelectric dam,
a marvel of engineering that was 12 years in the making.
While the six-hundred-foot-high dam provides clean
power and protection from devastating seasonal
flooding, it also displaced more than a million local
residents, whose villages are now completely submerged
under water.

A SPELLBINDING ODYSSEY THROUGH FIVE THOUSAND YEARS OF CHINESE CULTURE AND HISTORY
Your journey begins in Beijing at the huge Tiananmen Square,
a nearly hundred-acre site that has witnessed a staggering
number of major historic events. Explore the Forbidden
City, once off-limits to all but the Emperor’s inner circle, an
enormous complex that was China’s seat of power for nearly
five hundred years. Enjoy a rickshaw ride through the city’s
hutongs—old neighbourhoods with labyrinthine lanes—and
dine at the home of a local family.
Take an exhilarating walk along the two-thousand-year-
old Great Wall, its ancient stones worn smooth over many
centuries. Return to the city and visit the Temple of Heaven—
an ornately decorated and ingeniously designed wooden
pagoda—and take an excursion to the Beijing Zoo, home
to delightful giant pandas. Fly to the ancient capital of
Xi’an to see the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, an eight-
thousand-strong stone army keeping vigil over the grave
of China’s first emperor. You will also visit the Big Wild
Goose Pagoda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one
of the country’s holiest Buddhist temples.
China’s natural wonders are just as amazing as its man-made
marvels. Revel in the stunning scenery along the Yangtze
River and its Three Gorges, famous for their dramatic cliffs,
mist-shrouded peaks, and jade green water. Go ashore for an
up-close look at the Shibao Pagoda and its elaborately carved
wooden entrance. Take a small riverboat along the Shennong
Stream—a Yangtze tributary—for a more intimate perspective
of this unspoiled region. Your trip concludes in Shanghai, a
place known for its skyscrapers and acrobats, museums and
teahouses, and many lingering echoes of its colonial past.

DAY 2 u b BB L WD
Beijing
FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, hutongs tour with home-hosted lunch, and Peking Duck Welcome Dinner with complimentary wine
Your first full day in Beijing takes you to Tiananmen Square, which is the centre of modern civic life in Beijing. The square is surrounded by monuments to Chairman Mao and the Communist revolution that transformed China following WWII. You’ll stroll though the square and enter the UNESCO-designated Forbidden City, the nearly two-hundred-acre precinct of China’s historic emperors. Begun in the 15th century, the complex grew to encompass palaces and gardens, quarters for the imperial family, and offices for bureaucrats. This vast compound houses many treasures of the Qing and Ming dynasties.
Your next stop takes you to the traditional residential neighbourhoods of Beijing, the hutongs, which you’ll tour in the most traditional way—via rickshaw. You’ll also be invited to share lunch with a local family. Later, enjoy a Welcome Dinner of succulent Peking duck, a signature dish of the city, served with wine.
DAY 3 u b BB L D
Beijing
FEATURED EXCURSIONS: The Great Wall and kung fu show at Beijing’s Red Theatre
Walk along a section of the legendary Great Wall, a UNESCO-designated site that has been one of the man-made wonders of the world since its construction began in the sixth century to keep out invaders from the north. Back in Beijing, spend
the evening enjoying a spectacular show that combines kung fu prowess with acrobatics and dance; it’s the best performance in town.
DAY 4 u b d BB L D
Beijing, fly to Xi’an
FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Temple of Heaven and Beijing Zoo with giant panda visit
Start the day touring the Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO-designated site completed in the 15th century. A masterpiece of architectural and landscape design, it influenced architecture throughout China for centuries. Next, you’ll visit the giant pandas at the Beijing Zoo.
After lunch, you’ll fly to the ancient city of Xi’an, where you’ll settle into the tranquil Hilton Xi’an hotel.
DAY 5 u b BB L D Xi’an
FEATURED EXCURSIONS: Museum of the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, City Wall, and Tang Dynasty dinner show
Twenty-two centuries ago, China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was entombed with a vast army of warriors and horses made of clay. The large UNESCO-designated tomb complex lay undisturbed until the 20th century, when it became one of the most astonishing archaeological finds ever recorded. Only about eight thousand of the life-sized Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses have been excavated; no one knows for sure how many more figures remain concealed. You’ll visit the museum where some of these figures are exhibited and learn how they were created. Then you’ll see the massive defensive wall built around Xi’an by the first Ming emperor in the 15th century. In the evening, indulge in a lovely traditional dinner—complete with chou-jiu, a milky rice wine served warm—and a cultural performance that re-creates the music, folk dances, and traditional costumes of the Tang Dynasty.

heart. Visit the 13-hundred-year-old Jokhang Temple, the
epicentre of Tibetan Buddhism, its flagstones polished by
centuries of prostrating religious pilgrims. Venture within

architectural masterpiece containing one thousand rooms.

TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS LINKED BY ONE
LIFE-GIVING RIVER—THE MIGHTY MEKONG.
◀ Flower vendors, Vietnam ▶ Fishing boats on the Mekong River, Vietnam
The Mekong River has been a vital link between the
cities, towns, and villages clustered along its shores for
thousands of years, and millions of people continue to
depend on it for their livelihoods. Flowing through five
countries from the mountains of Tibet to the South China
Sea, the Mekong’s historical and cultural significance
simply cannot be overstated. An economic lifeline and
stoic witness to the region’s complex and troubled
past, the Mekong is without question one of the world’s
greatest rivers.
AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN LIFE
Cruising along the Mekong transports you back in time to
another era, where the rhythms of the countryside move
at a slower pace and allow for fascinating glimpses into a
traditional way of life. Relax onboard the authentic River
Orchid as you take in the lush tropical scenery unfolding
along the nearby riverbanks. You will see women in
graceful ao dai dresses and conical hats. Groves of
bamboo swaying gently in the breeze. Water buffalo
wallowing in the river. Fishermen repairing traps and
children shyly peering out from thatched roof houses
on bamboo stilts.
GET CLOSER WITH SMALL GROUP EXCURSIONS
Going ashore in a small group of no more than 20 people,
you’ll enjoy authentic, immersive experiences that will
give you a deeper understanding of the local culture and
way of life. Explore ancient temples, the flagstone floors
smooth and cool under your feet, fragrant smoke spiralling
upwards from smouldering joss sticks. Experience the
lively hustle and bustle of open-air and floating markets, a
riot of colour and exotic produce.
Throughout your voyage along the Mekong, you’ll enjoy
many personal interactions with local experts and sightsee
via local transportation—sampans, remorks, and rickshaws.
You may even be invited into the home of a local
family to see how they make cloth using time-honoured
methods. You'll also have an opportunity to watch
skilled artisans at small workshops devoted to making
handcrafted candy and rice paper products.
GETTING TO KNOW THE VIETNAMESE
AND CAMBODIAN PEOPLE
You may travel to Southeast Asia for the history, the food,
and the scenery, but the things you will cherish most will
be the friendly people. With their genuine warmth and
cheerful hospitality, gentle smiles and resilient natures,
the Vietnamese and Cambodian people are as much
national treasures as any designated UNESCO site.
For more information on the ship, see pages 80–81.

TREAT YOUR TASTE BUDS TO SOUTHEAST
ASIA'S FRESH AND FLAVOURFUL CUISINE.
The incredible flavours of Southeast Asia
◀ Vietnamese spring roll with prawn ▶ Lunch buffet onboard the River Orchid
Vietnamese and Cambodian food may very well be
Southeast Asia’s best-kept culinary secret. Small in size
but big on flavour, both countries have multifaceted
and sophisticated cuisines with a staggering number
of regional variations. Thanks to a year-round growing
season, street markets in Vietnam and Cambodia are
an extravaganza of fragrant herbs and spices, freshly
caught fish, every imaginable kind of noodle, and mounds
and mounds of rice—the bedrock of all Southeast Asian
cuisine—ranging from white to red to deep glossy black.
Perhaps what will delight you most of all is the region’s
wonderful produce—abundant, vividly coloured, and
oftentimes completely unfamiliar—exotic and edible
jewels that are fresh off the vine and bursting with flavour.
As many Uniworld guests are thrilled to discover, you’ve
never truly tasted a ripe mango until you’ve tasted one
in this part of the world.
DINING ONSHORE
Throughout your voyage, you’ll go ashore to dine in
authentic settings in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Siem
Reap, opportunities to savour each region’s culture and
cuisine in a memorable and delicious way. In Cambodia,
for example, you’ll be treated to a traditional dinner while
you enjoy an Apsara dance show, a charming Khmer art
form best described as a “dance-drama” that tells a story.
DINING ONBOARD
Although Southeast Asia’s regional cuisine is diverse
and delicious, your dining options are not limited to
Vietnamese and Cambodian food. Abundant breakfast
buffets offer an array of dishes, with something to entice
almost everyone. House wine, local beers, and soft drinks
are served with our compliments at every dinner onboard.

EXPERIENCE THE RESILIENCE AND ROMANCE OF VIETNAM & CAMBODIA
Two of the most beautiful, historic, and friendly places in all of
Asia, dynamic Vietnam and pastoral Cambodia are intriguing
studies in contrast. Each possesses its own unique charm and
social traditions, its own tragic history and complex past. In
many ways, a visit here is less about the sights you see and
more about the experiences you have and the people you
meet along the way. It all makes for a fascinating, rewarding,
and multi-layered travel experience.
Your journey starts in Ho Chi Minh City—once known as Saigon
and the “Paris of the Orient”—now a bustling economic boom-
town that offers a heady mixture of old and new. Delve into
the Vietnam War’s infamous Cu Chi tunnels before boarding
your comfortable ship. Visit artisan workshops and a lively
floating market via a traditional wooden sampan, as well as a
tribal village and local fish farm. After crossing the border into
Cambodia, enjoy an exhilarating cyclo tour of the capital city,
Phnom Penh, and stop at the city’s Genocide Museum to learn
more about the dark events of the 20th century. Take a scenic
cruise to see a “floating village” on the Tonle Sap River, and
visit a hilltop monastery where local monks will bestow a
special Buddhist blessing upon you.
One of the many highlights of your Uniworld journey will be
two full days at Cambodia’s spectacular UNESCO-designated
Angkor Wat temple complex, one of the world’s largest and
most important archaeological sites and the former epicentre
of the Khmer empire. Explore Ta Prohm, with its massive
stones smothered under the roots of giant banyan trees, and
Bayon Temple, famous for its immense and enigmatic stone
faces. Your journey concludes in historic Hanoi, the capital
of Vietnam, where your city tour features the former prison
known as the “Hanoi Hilton” by American POWs, a cyclo tour
of the colonial district, and a traditional water puppet show.
Who will enjoy this cruise/journey

OUR COMMITMENT TO RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
At Uniworld and parent company The Travel Corporation,
we understand that travel matters; it allows us to explore
the world and gain a deeper understanding of each
destination, its history and culture, through enriching
experiences. We also recognise that it is our responsibility
to help protect the places we visit and take care of the
world around us.
TREADRIGHT FOUNDATION
Created as a joint initiative between The Travel Corpora-
tion's family of brands, The TreadRight Foundation is a
not-for-profit that works to help ensure the environments
and communities we visit remain vibrant and preserved
for generations to come. To date, TreadRight has donated
more than $2.5 million to sustainable tourism projects
worldwide. Uniworld is proud to be an active founder and
supporter of TreadRight's projects and work.
TreadRight's guiding principle is to encourage sustainable
tourism development through conservation, leadership,
and support for communities. We encourage each of our
partners to use this principle to guide all of their actions,
whether at our regional offices or when taking guests
around the world. By providing grants to organisations
that encourage sustainability in different destinations, we
hope to maintain the natural attractions across the world
that define each region. Foundation priorities are set by
the Steering Committee, which includes sustainability
leaders such as Celine Cousteau and Costas Christ.

TreadRight, please visit us at treadright.org
WHOLE WORLD WATER
Nearly one billion people today do not have access to
clean, safe drinking water. WHOLE WORLD Water is a
campaign designed to unite the hospitality and tourism
industry with the goal of raising $1 billion to eradicate
this problem. More than a fundraising initiative, this is
a revolutionary way of doing business. By partnering
with WHOLE WORLD Water, Uniworld has committed to
removing all disposable water bottles from all company-
owned ships. We provide our guests with their own
personal water bottle to take on excursions and keep as a
souvenir, so no plastic water bottles are used. Additionally,
Uniworld will donate $1 per guest on company-owned
ships to WHOLE WORLD Water—100 percent of which
will be used to provide safe drinking water to communities
around the world.
SUSTAINABLE RIVER CRUISING PROJECT
For the past three years, Uniworld has worked
closely with TreadRight and The Travel Foundation,
a United Kingdom-based charity that shares our socio-
environmental values. Together we have developed the
first-of-its-kind Environmental Sustainability for River
Cruising Guide, offering best practices to river cruise
operators worldwide on how to operate with as little
environmental impact as possible. The guide is designed
to support the river cruise tourism industry around
the world in working towards a sustainable future by
identifying strategies that reduce water and energy use
and waste generation on river cruise ships.

REFUNDS AND PENALTIESIllness or Absenteeism: In the event of your withdrawal from a cruise/journey after commencement for reasons of illness, you must obtain a medical certificate in support of any insurance claim. We regret that no refunds can be made for absences from a cruise, including but not limited to missed meals or sightseeing. Uniworld make no representation or guarantees concerning reimbursements of funds paid by you under any insurance claim.
GENERAL INFORMATION AND CONDITIONSPassport/Visa: A valid passport is required to travel on all Uniworld programs. Passports must be valid for at least six (6) months after the scheduled return date of the trip. You should check with your travel agent or the Australian Consulate Service for information regarding necessary documentation. Non-Australian citizens must contact the appropriate consular office for entry requirements pertaining to your trip.
A single entry visa is required for entry to India.
For entry to China, a single-entry visa is required for all passport holders.
For entry to Tibet, a visa is not necessary, but an entry permit is required for all passport holders. Uniworld will provide a Tibet Entry Permit while on the tour for all guests. In order for us to properly arrange for your Tibet Entry Permit in advance, please email a copy of the photo page of your passport as well as a copy of your China visa to [email protected] no later than forty-five (45) days prior to departure. Please include your name and Uniworld booking number in your email.
A multiple entry visa is required for entry to Vietnam.
For entry to Cambodia, our Tour Manager will take care of obtaining Cambodian visas for each Guest while on the tour. Each Guest will need to provide the Tour Manager with their passport and $50 USD cash per person while on the tour for this purpose. The Tour Manager will then submit all passports to the Cambodian Immigration Authorities and obtain the visas. For southbound Mekong cruises, this will be done at the Siem Reap Airport. For northbound Mekong cruises, this will be done onboard the River Orchid prior to entering Cambodia.
A single entry visa is required for entry to Laos.
Any visa(s) or other documentation required for a particular itinerary is the sole responsibility of the guest. Obtaining and carrying these documents is your sole responsibility. Uniworld will not be responsible for advising and/or obtaining required travel documentation for any passenger, or for any delays, damages and/or losses, including missed portions of your trip, related to improper travel documentation.
Due to government imposed security/immigration measures, passport information and emergency contact information are required for all passengers prior to release documentation.
Advanced, Cancelled, or Delayed Sailing: Uniworld reserves the right to cancel, advance or postpone any scheduled sailing date and may, but is not obligated to, substitute hotels or vessels. Uniworld shall not be liable for any loss to you by reason of any such cancellation, advancement or postponement. In the event of cancellation by Uniworld, your sole right of recourse shall be to obtain a refund of monies paid to Uniworld in connection with such cruise/journey.
Cruise Prices: Prices are based on costs, charges, tariffs, rates, prices, taxes, levies and exchange rates as at 21 October 2014.
Should the total cruise/journey price increase by more than 10%, passengers will have the right to cancel their trip within seven (7) days notification of the surcharge without penalty.
No surcharges in respect of cost or currency fluctuations will be made once payment for the deposit of your cruise/journey is received. This does not apply to fuel surcharges and any taxes, charges or levies imposed by any Government or their agencies.
Cruise Participation: Uniworld trips are exciting, relatively active holidays. While there will be plenty of time to relax, there will also be much to see and do. Your included excursions may require an extensive amount of walking over cobblestone streets, uneven pavement and sometimes steps; please bring any issues regarding your health or mobility to the attention of Uniworld when making your booking as this could greatly impact your holiday experience. In addition, you should know that while river cruise ships are spacious and elegant they may not have elevators. If you are disabled, a companion who will be responsible for providing any required assistance must accompany you, as Uniworld is unable to provide any individual assistance. Uniworld has sole discretion to decline the booking of any passenger whose condition may affect their own health, safety and enjoyment or that of other passengers. Additionally, Uniworld reserves its right to require a current passenger to end their trip for the aforesaid reasons. Uniworld does not recommend their trips for children under 8 years of age.
Itinerary Changes: You can count on the value of Uniworld’s experience and regional knowledge to make sure you enjoy your cruise/journey even when conditions beyond our control occur. The very nature of a river, its sources, and networks of bridges and locks, means that there will be times when weather or other conditions in a region require Uniworld to make adjustments and/or modifications to an itinerary. Although every effort will be made to keep itineraries, vessels, and hotels as they are shown in the brochure, Uniworld reserves the right to substitute itineraries, hotels or vessels. In such cases, we will do everything we can to make sure the locations visited, the excursions taken and the hotels or vessels offered are similar to the ones originally planned. Any changes to itineraries will not result in eligibility for a refund. Itineraries are subject to change without notice and may need to be altered specifically because of water levels, wind factors, or other conditions.
Extensions/Land Tours: Uniworld reserves the right to reschedule and/or cancel land extensions or land tours if the minimum number of participants (20 people) is not met or for safety reasons. If you, as the Passenger, choose to cancel your pre- or post-cruise extension eighty-nine (89) days or less before departure, then please refer to the Cancellation Policy section for the applicable cancellation policy and penalties that will be applied.
Medical Issues: Uniworld does not employ staff doctors or nurses. Should you need medical attention, it will be at local facilities, at your expense. Uniworld is not responsible for any costs incurred as a result of medical services, or for the quality of medical care or medical services you receive.
Your Asia Cruise: We are confident your river cruise/journey in Asia will be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Indeed, a cruise on the Mekong, Yangtze, or Ganges rivers is the most comfortable way to experience these fascinating countries. You will be travelling through a region that is continually changing. Many things are different from those at home, and what you might take for granted in Western countries may not be available during your cruise/journey. To make the most of your cruise/journey holiday in Asia, please take along your spirit of adventure and willingness to be flexible and tolerant. You will be richly rewarded, because this river cruise/journey is more than just a vacation; it’s a unique cultural experience you will remember and talk about for the rest of your life.
Young Travellers: Guests who are less than 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is 21 years of age or older. While we will accept children 4 years of age and older as Guests, it is our long-term experience that most children do not enjoy or appreciate the river cruise experience. There are no special arrangements, activities, medical facilities, or accommodations (unless noted) for children on Uniworld cruise/journey programs. Adults accompanying children are responsible for their behaviour onboard and ashore.
Smoking Policy: For the comfort of all our Guests, smoking is only permitted on the sun decks of our ships. Smoking is not permitted on motorcoaches. This policy applies to all forms of smoking materials, including vapour e-cigarettes.
Diets: Please advise the Uniworld reservation agent of specific dietary considerations and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Please also indicate your needs when you complete the Passenger Information Form at uniworldcruises.com.au.
Pets: Pets are not permitted on Uniworld trips.
YOUR CRUISE TICKET CONTRACTTransportation aboard the ship is provided solely by the ship owners and charterers pursuant to the terms and conditions of the cruise ticket contract that you will receive prior to embarkation. A copy of the form of the cruise ticket contract terms and conditions will be provided upon request. Please note that the cruise ticket contract includes a clause specifying the courts of Basel Switzerland as the exclusive forum for resolving disputes.
