PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Greetings to all tennis aficionados in Kentucky! 2016 was a shinning year for tennis in our state and we are
looking forward to an even brighter 2017. Tennis is being promoted and played in all areas of the Common-
wealth and the possibilities look endless. I am so proud of the USTA Kentucky staff, the Community Tennis
Associations, the Local League Coordinators, and ALL of the “grass roots volunteers” who have made these
successes possible. You are the backbone upon which promoting and expanding the sport we love is built.
Thank you all so very much.
In order to look forward to the future, one must understand the past. Therefore, I am sharing with you some
of the key accomplishments for USTA Kentucky and the tennis community in 2016.
• Kentucky led the Southern Section in first year free 10 and under memberships with 1477 or an approximate increase of 23.88%.
second in the country, behind only California
• Kentucky was approved for six “Play It Forward” grants from Southern and eight Diversity and Inclusion grants
• Junior matches increased by 16%
• Junior Team Tennis registrations increased by 21%
• Adult League registrations were up 3%
• Inaugural 60/70 and over invitational team event held with over 200 participants
• University of Louisville’s men’s Tennis Coach Rex Ecarma coached the Southern 14s zonal team, including three Kentucky Players,
to a victory in Cary, NC
• Partnered with local CTA’s and Metro Parks to resurface Seneca Park’s 10 court facility
• Owensboro Tennis Center was awarded a National Facility of the Year award at the USTA semi-annual meeting in New York.
• Continued partnership with KHSAA by sponsoring all state and regional Sportsmanship Awards, technical assistance to their staff
and promoting USTA programs and initiatives
• Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS) won the Special Event of the Year award from USTA Southern
• Reached 207% of our Kids Tennis Club goal and 125% of our PE program goal
As you can see from the list above, we have built a solid foundation upon which to expand and build an even more incredible 2017.
I have so many goals and dreams for tennis in the state of Kentucky: building courts where none exist, collaborating with Parks and
Recreation departments and other sports organizations across the state to bring more programming to every corner of Kentucky,
targeting areas of the Commonwealth where no tennis programming is available, restructuring our non-profit foundation “Raise A
Racquet” to bring even more grant assistance monies to players and organizations in Kentucky and finally the ultimate dream of
putting a racquet in the hand of every Kentuckian. As perhaps the greatest female tennis player of all time Serena Williams said, “It
doesn’t matter what your background is or where you come from, if you have dreams and goals, that’s all that matters.” The dreams
and goals of every tennis lover in Kentucky have led us to the possibility of this very bright and exciting future. I salute you all on
behalf of USTA Kentucky and thank you from the bottom of my heart.
