years ago, Pete Lawonn and I held the

first show in Nashville. Pete, my business

partner and friend, recognized the need tobring this industry together. Through that vision,

Pumper was born. The Liquid Waste Haulers Show

followed shortly after, and eventually became the

    WWETT Show.

It’s been a ton of fun, with so many great memories.

I’ve made lifelong friends and have enjoyed

every minute watching this industry grow and

evolve. But it’s time — time to thank the industry,

exhibitors and attendees. You have built this show

into what it is today. You are the reason for

    our success.

So many of you have contributed your time and

effort to the show, each adding personality andputting your stamp on what has truly been a group

effort. I can’t possibly thank all of you enough.

It’s time to thank the COLE Publishing staff. You

work long hours, always with the goal of making

each show — each person’s experience — the best it

can be. Your loyalty and dedication is appreciated.

    Thank you, all.

While it’s hard for me to let go, it’s time to turn the reins over to a company with the resources to take the show

    — and in many ways the industry — to new heights. Informa PLC has purchased the WWETT Show and will lead

it into the future. COLE Publishing will continue to work with them moving forward, ensuring the WWETT Show

remains a vital piece of this industry — the event that brings all of us together.

Thank you, everyone, for everything you have contributed.

    It’s time …

Pick Your Spot Careful restroom placement is vital for

    streamlined service and customer convenience

    By Pete Litterski

    Whether it’s a contract with a high-plains farmer provid-

ing facilities for his field hands or a bid for a big-city

builder erecting a high-rise office building, operators

say that the bottom line when it comes to placing portable restrooms

and accessories is the old adage: “The customer is always right.”

That’s why experienced operators say it’s important for a

vendor to make sure the customer has all the information to make

    the “right” decision.

    All-access pass

“The best way to have the unit serviced is to keep it within

25 feet of where we pull on the property,” says Brian McNamara,

president and CEO of NSC Restrooms based in Northborough,

Massachusetts. McNamara’s company serves markets in four

northeastern states as well as in the Tampa, Florida, area.

“We tell our drivers the same thing we tell our customers,” he

says. “Keeping the portable restroom close to the access allows

the driver to service the account without disrupting the work

or the event.” McNamara says that customers who listen to the

drivers will understand the importance of putting the equipment

in places where the customer won’t have to move equipment or

supplies when units are being serviced.

Norman Bond, the owner of Clean Can Portable Toilets in Lub-bock, Texas, agrees that it is important to try to keep units located

as close to a paved surface as possible, to keep heavy trucks off of

open ground that can become swampy in wet weather or on fin-

ished lawns that could be damaged. “You might have a 30-foot hose,

but you still need to get within 20 feet to service a unit,” he says.

    Cool and collected

McNamara says that for special events the attendance and the

size will help guide the decision of how to locate portable rest-

rooms. “We put them in places where they don’t interfere with

traffic flow, but we put them near key intersections where they

will be convenient for the most people.”

He adds that NSC drivers will also seek out shady locations

for the comfort of the people attending an event or working on a

    job site.

On the high plains surrounding Lubbock, Bond says many

of his customers are commercial farmers who have large crews

working in fields, often harvesting vegetables. He says that many

of those customers actually have workers leave the portable toilets

and hand-wash stations on trailers that can be moved to keep

within easy walking distance of the field workers.

Keeping restrooms clean and hand-wash stations serviced is

important for farmers whose workers are often handling freshvegetables headed to market for human consumption.

    Stay together

Both Bond and McNamara say that keeping their equipment

in groups on work sites and event sites makes it easier to service

them, but McNamara adds that doing so also helps ensure that a

customer can make optimal use of all the facilities.

“If they are not bunched together, you often find one set of

units can get slammed and the others might not be used at all,”

McNamara says. That’s because most workers or event visitors

will instinctively go to the restrooms that are closest at hand.

NSC drivers are trained to explain such factors to customers

when making deliveries, but McNamara adds, “We never argue

with a customer, but when they realize it’s for the benefit of the

event or job site, they’ll usually work with you.”

And if the customer doesn’t see it that way? “We’ll try to

accommodate them if at all possible.”

Choosing a restroom location within 25 feet of where you access the customer’sproperty makes it easier to service without disrupting the work or the event.

    8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

    Wisconsin pumper starts

    with a few restrooms and

    continues adding services

    By Dee Goerge

Bryce Harding had his first portable restroom con-

tract two weeks before he graduated from Peshtigo

High School in northern Wisconsin. Though

some classmates teased him about his career choice, he

    knew what he was doing.

Harding learned hard work early on. He had several

years of experience at a neighbor’s farm milking every

morning and evening and helping with fieldwork during

the summer. His great-grandfather, Lee Bruso, ran an

excavating business and taught Harding the basics of

welding. Between the two operations, he had plenty of

opportunities to drive, troubleshoot and fix a variety of

    equipment.

He also helped his father, Gerry, with his one-man

septic service business. So in the spring of Harding’s

senior year of high school when his dad received a letter

requesting bids for portable restroom services, he recog-

nized an opportunity and bought a truck and his

    first eight restrooms.

It took several years before he could quit a full-timepipefitting job but he managed to grow Harding Septic

& Portables to the point where he could begin building a

staff. With the recent purchase of a competitor’s business,

Harding, now 30, has grown the business even more. And

    he’s not done yet.

Portable sanitation generates about 25 percent of

Harding’s revenue. He owns 280 regular restroom units,

15 handicap restroom units, 22 sinks and a luxury rest-room trailer used for weddings and other events.

Harding Septic & Portables owner Bryce Harding went into businessbefore he finished high school. Keeping an eye to the future and adding new

services has continued to provide opportunity for the business.

Why I’m Here“I come to the show to connect with other people, other pumpers here.

I also like to see what is new as far as equipment and trucks. We also

go for the education part of it — that is invaluable.”

Bryce HardingOwner, Harding Septic & Portables

Early on, he realized he needed to add services. Septic pump-

ing now accounts for about half of all business. Other services,

including cleaning and inspection, have expanded the company’s

    footprint.

“I got into sewer cleaning about six years in,” he says. “I could

see that a lot of work was going out the window.” He got tired of

scheduling conflicts while arranging for others to do the work, so

he invested in his own equipment.

“I go to the WWETT Show every year and it helps with

(choosing) new equipment,” he says. “I’ve been around the

plumbing industry a long time and when I see an opportunity,

    I’m ready to try it.”

After purchasing a hot-water jetter and an inspection camera

at the show, Harding immediately put the new equipment to work

cleaning 12,000 feet of floor drains for a local shipyard.

Then he used it at a piston manufacturing plant. Salt from the

metal went into floor drains and hardened and plugged 150 feet

of line. Using an auger hadn’t worked and factory owners thought

they’d have to spend up to $200,000 tearing up the floor and

replacing the line. They were happy when Harding’s jetter dis-

solved the salt and solved the problem, and he was able to set up

a maintenance plan to regularly clean the pipe to prevent future

    problems.

Until a few years ago, he ran the business alone with the help

of his mother, Elizabeth, who answered his phone, and a couple of

part-time employees. As the workload grew, he knew he

    needed help.

In addition to drivers, Harding hired a secretary in early 2014.

Laurie Simpson answers the phone, handles billing and account-

ing and will eventually dispatch trucks. Harding adds that he is

grateful for his mom who continues to run errands for him. He

also trades calls with his dad to better accommodate customers.

Finally, his wife, Heidi, answers the phone on weekends and

has been invaluable at making business decisions. For example,

she recognized customers with lake homes often called for service

on weekends. Harding figured his costs (including overtime pay),

realized he was losing money and started charging a flat rate of$300. Customers now plan ahead, and the Hardings have more

time to spend with their two young children.

The business has also expanded through acquisition. Two

years ago, Harding bought out his biggest competitor, Jim’s Septic

Pumping in Crivitz, Wisconsin, which had a strong customer

list in a tourist town and lake area. Just a couple months ago,

he closed on the purchase of Geiter Septic Pumping of Wabeno,

    Wisconsin.

Always looking for a new challenge, Harding sees new equip-

ment designed for the wastewater industry and envisions many

ways to utilize it. He thinks hydroexcavation will be part of his

future, and he knows a broad menu of services will keep his busi-

    ness growing.

“There are a lot of options in this business. So many things

you can do, endless routes for you to expand.”

Septic pumping accounts for about half of Harding Septic & Portables’ business.Newer services like cleaning and inspection have helped the company expand its

    footprint.

Keep the Cash Flowing Develop workable strategies to help your income stay ahead of your outgo

    By Erik Gunn

Here’s a one-question quiz: When it comes to money, what

do you need to ensure business success? Sales? That’s

where it all starts. Profits? Without something left after

you’ve paid for what you’re selling, you won’t be able to go the

    distance.

But don’t forget one other component of the sales-and-profits

    relationship: cash flow.

Your business will fail quickly without sales. It will fail in the

long run if you can’t someday turn a profit. But without good cash

flow, you will get choked off from sales and profits.

    Track it

So how do you improve cash flow?

First, you have to know what’s really going on.

Tiffany C. Wright operates The Resourceful CEO, based in

Atlanta. The company helps small and medium-sized businesses

and their owners realize their profit, cash flow and financing

objectives. She recommends a spreadsheet that projects your cash

    flow three months out.

Each week track the cash coming in (paid accounts receivable,

cash and credit card sales) and going out (payments against yourown accounts payable, utilities, rent, maintenance costs, and in-

stallment payments, such as your quarterly income tax payments).

And each week, update the information and total each side of

the ledger: money in, money out.

“Below the weekly sum, I run a cumulative, running total of all

the weeks,” Wright says. “If the running total is negative, that’s a

huge problem that needs to be addressed.”

    Buy time

To address an immediate crunch, look at your own bills. “Com-

panies can push out payables in weeks where cash flow is tight,”

Wright says. Do you pay a bill as soon as it arrives, even though it

has a net-30-day term? “Wait until the 27th day to put the check

    in the mail.”

Assuming your own credit card bills are under control, look

at paying a bill with your credit card, she adds. “That provides

another 30 days to generate the cash to cover the charge.”

Both are valuable tips, but these are emergency strategies to be

deployed sparingly. Poor cash flow is one of those problems that

will be made worse if you use stopgap solutions carelessly.

    Get paid

For the other side of the balance sheet — income — your solu-

tions will demand foresight and require you to “train” your cus-tomers. Put time limits on the bills you send, and enforce them.

Consider a discount for especially prompt payment.

For longer running projects, you might require a deposit or

partial prepayment. You could set those as general rules for all

customers or implement them only for chronically late payers.

Enabling customers to pay by credit card puts cash in your

hands a lot faster than waiting for the customer to send you a

check. Wright points out that you can offer your business custom-

ers that option, not just residential consumers.

    Plan ahead

Cash flow that shifts with the season can be at least somewhat

predictable. Use that knowledge to help yourself.

“A contractor needs to generate enough profits during ‘good

months’ to carry the operation annually,” says Jim Herst, CEO of

Perceptive Selling Initiative, Inc. in Highland Park, Illinois. And

    don’t stop there.

If you can, Herst says, schedule your work over time so you

can invoice more consistently. Develop alternative services —

even a second business — for the slow months to keep money

coming in. If your business allows for it, make sales calls duringdowntime and get contracts for future work with a prepayment

discount. “It can be a godsend,” says Herst.

    Negotiate

Another approach to cash flow troubles is negotiation. That

doesn’t mean just calling up your creditors and begging them to

    spread out your payment.

“Ahead of the quiet season, you can negotiate payment terms

with vendors and include them in your contracts,” says Devon

Smiley, a negotiation consultant in Montreal, Canada. “This al-

lows both you and them stability and confidence throughout the

year.” If you know certain months will be good cash-flow months,

perhaps you can get a specific payment deadline date that matches

your own cash flow instead of just accepting 15- or 30-day terms.

Client terms are another opportunity to plan ahead. Create

discounts for early payments to boost slow-season revenue. Devise

    installment plans.

“A great example of this is signing a contract at the end of one

season to complete work at the beginning of the next season, and

accepting installment payments during the months in between,”

    Smiley says.

Negotiation is a skill at which some of us excel more readily

than others. If you’re not so good at it, a coach may be able to

teach you more effective approaches to ask for what you need.

“Saving on the time, energy and frustration of negotiation

helps the small business owner focus on what they do best —

    helping their customers,” Smiley says.

If you manage the cash-flow conundrum, think how much

more you’ll be able to do for your clients — and improve your

    cash flow in the process.

Build a Deep Bench A job-rotation program can help you stay in the game when employees retire or move on

    By Ken Wysocky

In sports, successful teams benefit from developing a deep

bench — a core group of well-qualified backups who can keep

a squad competitive in the event of unexpected events, such as

player injuries or trades. Ideally, corporations and organizations

    shouldn’t be any different.

So how can your organization make like a first-rate sports

team? The answer is both simple and cost-effective: develop a job

rotation program, also known as cross-training.

It makes a lot of sense,

    especially when you con-

sider that your company is a

lot like a sports team. Your

employees are effectivelyfree agents, free to leave at

any time — and in today’s

    business environment, they

    often do, especially if they’re

    younger millennials who

are apt to change jobs more

    frequently. And just like

athletes, your employees could miss time from work because of

“injuries” such as prolonged illness. Or an employee may be takenout of the starting rotation, so to speak, due to maternity or

    family leave.

“Because employee mobility is so much higher these days, you

need to have people who can fill in if someone resigns unexpect-

edly or is out sick or on family leave,” says Dr. B. Lynn Ware, the

president and chief executive officer of Integral Talent Systems

Inc., a talent-management consulting firm based in Mountain

View, California. “You need bench strength — other people who

can step in and do the job, providing customers with continuity

    of service.”

Cross-training used to be considered more of a leadership

development tool that could give high-potential managers experi-

ence in all areas of a company or organization. But Ware says that

over the last several years, she’s seen more and more companies

interested in implementing cross-training programs for all levels

    of employees.

“There’s so much change going on in organizations these days,

with all the technological advancements and (socio-economic)

disruptions, that it makes sense to have employees who can do

many things, as opposed to specializing in just one area,” she says.

As further proof of their burgeoning popularity, Ware notes

that of the nearly two dozen different topics she covers in webi-

nars, cross-training is one of the two most popular sessions. Andwhen you stop and consider all the benefits, it’s easy to see why.

First of all, cross-training can reduce employee turnover by

increasing job satisfaction. Cross-functionally trained employees

typically aren’t bored silly because their routine and responsi-

bilities can vary. As such, cross-trained employees are also more

    engaged and productive, Ware says.

“There’s a very strong correlation between employees whofeel they’re getting professional development, and higher rates of

engagement and lower turnover rates,” she explains. “And that, in

turn, leads to better customer satisfaction and higher productivity,

and all those factors drop to the bottom line. We all know what it

takes to do enough to keep our jobs. But motivated employees are

more willing to work more hours — go the extra mile.”

Cross-training is also gaining traction because more and more

employers are hiring greater numbers of millennials, a large

generational cohort of 20-somethings that will become a large

part of the workforce in the years ahead — particularly in mature

    industries, Ware points out.

We all know what it takes to

do enough to keep our jobs.

    But motivated employees are

    more willing to work more

hours — go the extra mile.”

    Saturday - February 20, 2016 Pg. 23

“Millennials are attracted to organizations that focus on skill

and employee development, which are top motivators for them,”she says. “In fact, those factors are often more important than pay

to millennials. They like to take a ‘tour’ of a company and examine

different roles and careers. So companies with job-rotation pro-

grams will stand out from the competition and help attract quality

    employees.”

Cross-training is also effective for companies that utilize ex-

tremely proprietary processes that require specialized skill sets that

most people don’t possess. “If you can’t find a lot of people off thestreet who have the skills you need, then job rotations are a great

    strategy,” she adds.

Such programs also give employees a better understanding

of how different functions and departments work — how all the

pieces that make up organizations fit together. After employees

work in other departments and see what those jobs entail, they

often have more empathy and appreciation for colleagues in those

areas. As a result, they may be less frustrated than before when

things go wrong, because they realize all the things that go into

making things happen in other corners of the company.

“The broader an employee’s perspective, the better corporate

citizen they’re going to be,” Ware notes. “They may even be able

to provide new insights and solutions to problems in other depart-

ments because they come in with a fresh perspective. Overall, job

rotations give organizations lots more internal capabilities.”

There are many details to consider when starting a cross-

training program from scratch. But in broad brushstrokes, here are

some points that require primary consideration:

      1. Back to Basics. Ware suggests that companies begin by

following the 80-20 rule, which states that roughly 80 percent of

effects stem from 20 percent of the causes. In other words, about

20 percent of an employee’s duties are mission critical, while theremaining 80 percent are miscellaneous in nature. As such, cross–

training should cover only the most important and most frequently

    performed core tasks.

      2. Coherent Communication. Make sure the reasons why

you’re implementing a program are well known and properly com-

municated internally. If not, you run the risk of employees coming

up with reasons on their own, which typically don’t mesh well with

    the organization’s goals or strategies.

      3. Fill the Gaps. Figure out ahead of time how you will com-

pensate for the absence of employees who go off for training. Some

companies swap two employees from each department; one person

from marketing gets cross-training in sales and vice-versa, for

    example.

      4. Walk Before You Run. Before implementing a full-scale,

    all-encompassing program, develop a short-term prototype pro-

gram and see how it goes, then adjust things accordingly before

rolling out a larger-scale version, Ware suggests.

It’s also important to measure whether or not the program is

successful. One way is to measure organizational outcomes, such

as lost customers or sales figures; if customer loyalty increases orif sales rise after a cross-training program has been around for a

while, those metrics indicate the program is working, Ware says.

“You can also measure things like employee-retention rates,”

she adds. “Or do an employee survey and see if people who partici-

pate in cross-training programs score higher in engagement and

job satisfaction. Use whatever metrics you usually use to measure

    organizational outcomes and success.”

Here are a few features that set the Cat Pumps 3570 apart from

    lower-quality competitive products:

    • Ceramic plungers feature thick-wall design to better dissipate

heat, reducing the potential for thermal cracking often

    experienced with thin-wall competitive designs.

      • Oversized crankshaft bearings with greater loading capacity

maintain structural integrity, resulting in a highly durable

    pump-drive design.

      • V-packings and low-pressure seals are completely lubricated

and cooled, greatly reducing seal wear.

    • Concentric, high-density polished solid ceramic plungersprovide a true wear surface for long life.

    • Two-piece manifold design is easier to service than a one- piece

design; chrome-plated brass discharge manifold is serviced

without entering crankcase, reducing field service time.

      • With an industry-proven crankcase design, there is no need

for integral heat-dissipating pockets like some competitive

designs that are prone to excessive heat buildup – a nonissue

for Cat Pumps. Every design detail is optimized to produce

    the longest-life/lowest cost-of-ownership product.
