I guess I’m a little selfish. Research shows that expressing gratitude can lower

blood pressure, reduce stress, and improve mood. In other words, saying “thank

you” really benefits the person who says it. So indulge my selfishness for a

moment while I lavish gratitude on you, the loyal supporters of the Cincinnati

Zoo & Botanical Garden.

Thank you!

Our Zoo has the most dedicated, generous, and enthusiastic community of

any zoo I know. You stand by us through sunshine and storms.

In May 2016 we experienced a terrible loss with Harambe and the criticism

that accompanies difficult decisions. You, our donors, members, and neighbors

empathized and stuck by us. Not only did you continue to visit, you did so more

than ever before.

Months later, in January 2017, you heard about our premature baby hippo.

Even knowing that we might have to face another painful loss, we–our Zoo team

and the community–joined together to overcome the odds. Fiona’s care team,

buoyed by public support, fully dedicated themselves to bringing her through the

critical stage. We concluded the fiscal year by announcing that Fiona had reached

200 pounds, with her health vastly improved.

So, thank you.

Running a zoo means more than feeding animals, planting plants, selling tick-

ets, and keeping records. Our staff doesn’t just use their brains. They bring their

hearts to work, too. When you wish them the best in good times and bad, you

affect them.

I feel my mood improving. Yes, it’s true, saying thank you feels great. And you

deserve it. We simply could not do what we do without you.

Sincerely,

Thane Maynard

Zoo Director

Managing a world class zoo and botanical garden takes tenacity. The demand-

ing, daily work is on view for the world, whether things are sailing along

smoothly or the going gets tough. The staff, board, and volunteers at our Zoo can

vouch for that. It’s why we’re so grateful for the most ardent community support

any Zoo could ask for.

For more than 140 years, Hamilton County and Greater Cincinnati have had

our backs. You show your support every day with your attendance, kind words,

precious time, and financial resources. We are proud to share with you this report

on another year, our fiscal year ending March 30, 2017.

It was a good, if at times challenging, year. The recently completed Africa area

fulfills a long-sought goal, and the Gorilla World expansion is going strong. Thanks

to community generosity and the good work of our staff, we have been able to

make continued investments to maintain and modernize our buildings and

exhibits – while keeping our gate prices low and accessible

to all.

Oh, and a baby hippo named Fiona was born,

survived, and is flourishing.

Thank you to our incredible staff, devoted volun-

teers, enthusiastic Ambassador Council, dedicated

Foundation board, our members and visitors, and our

fellow Trustees.

A Look BackFiscal Year 2017 (April 2016-March 2017)

A lot can happen in 365 days.

One Tragic Good-Bye As the summer season began, the Zoo faced tragedy.

We lost Harambe, a 17-year-old western lowland

gorilla, in saving the life of a little boy. Support from the

local community poured in, reminding us how much

an individual animal can touch people’s lives, and how

lucky we are to live in Cincinnati.

400,000 Gallons + 8,000 pounds Your generosity helped us complete Africa, the largest

exhibit in our 140+ year history, by opening Hippo

Cove. This state-of-the-art, sustainable habitat inspires

1.6 million annual visitors with above-ground and

underwater viewing areas. It’s one of a handful of

structures like it nationwide, and it’s now home to

three river hippos. Read more on pages 16-18.

2 Six-Foot Babies

Two of our giraffes gave birth last summer, about six

weeks apart. We welcomed Corazon, daughter to

Cece, on July 27. Zoey, daughter to Jambo, arrived on

September 13. Kimba is proud papa to both. Each baby

was born healthy, standing more than six feet tall and

weighing around 100 pounds!

september NOVEMber January14 Dedicated IndividualsThe Zoo welcomed 14 AmeriCorps members onboard

for one year of service, or a combined total of 18,000

hours. The Zoo’s partnership with AmeriCorps aims to

provide quality STEM education to economically dis-

advantaged students and to promote environmentally

conscious behavior. AmeriCorps held its annual pledge

ceremony on Zoo grounds, where 140 members from

8 Cincinnati organizations kicked off their year of

service. Read more on page 9.

3 Zoos, 3 Polar BearsWe gratefully partnered with two other AZA-accred-

ited zoos in a three-way “swap” of polar bears to help

facilitate breeding of this imperiled animal. Our female,

Berit, moved to Henry Vilas Zoo in Wisconsin. Their

male, Sakari, moved to the Buffalo Zoo, which brought

Anana to us. Since Berit seems unable to produce cubs,

she will be cared for along with a female “roommate.”

Anana has been recommended for breeding with our

male, Little One. Read more on page 15.

29 Pounds = 1 Little HeroWe hoped Henry and Bibi would produce a baby –

we just didn’t know we would get one so soon! We

confirmed Bibi’s pregnancy in early January, with the

baby due in March. A 29-pound bundle of joy surprised

us on January 24. Six weeks premature, and half the

weight of a normal newborn, the baby quickly took the

world by storm. Read more on page 17.

Zoo BabiesDuring fiscal year 2017, a huge variety of animals was born at our Zoo. We also celebrated a “gotcha day” for a baby cheetah from another institution and the birth of a Sumatran rhino in Indonesia, whose parentage traces back to us!

April 5 Donni the CHEETAH. Donni was actually born in March at Wildlife Safari

in Winston, Oregon. But, since his mother was unable to care for him, he came

to live with us as a foster sibling to our other three cubs.

May 12 Delilah the SUMATRAN RHINO. The second offspring of our Sumatran

rhino, Andalas, was born at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Indonesia. Andalas

was sent to the sanctuary in 2007 to help save this critically

endangered species, so the birth of a female was

terrific news.

juneCalar the ANDEAN CONDOR. The first Andean condor chick to hatch in

Cincinnati in 30 years arrived to parents

Gryph and Laurel.

The U.S. Green Building Council awarded our Africa exhibit Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Status.

Our Marketing team received the AZA’s Marketing Excellence Award for increasing online membership sales by 47%. The team achieved this growth using social media and other forms of digital communication.

In November, Easter Seals presented us with their Outstanding Community Partner award. We have partnered with them for more than a decade, employ-ing area residents to deconstruct old homes that the zoo buys, disposing of the used materials responsibly. Together, we have diverted 110 tons of materials from Hamilton County landfills and worked toward a more inclusive community.

The Green Parking Council (GPC) designated the Cincinnati Zoo’s Vine Street parking lot the first GPC Demonstrator Site

for surface parking lots.

We were awarded a prestigious federal grant to establish an

AmeriCorps service program at the Zoo. As a partner, we now

have 14 AmeriCorps service members as part of our team.

Members from across the region took their pledge of

service on Zoo grounds in September.

The Cincinnati chapter of the Public Relations Society of America

honored Zoo director Thane Maynard with their 2016 President’s

Award. They said, “He is one of the most respected zoo leaders in

the country, but the past year truly let his ambassadorial light shine.”

Cathryn Hilker, Founder of our Cat Ambassador Program, won the

2017 Cheetah Conservation Award. Dr. Laurie Marker, Founder

and Executive Director of Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF),

presented her with the award, which recognized Cathryn’s

decades-long commitment to sustaining the cheetah

and pioneering cat ambassador programs.

We are grateful and proud to have received a number of honors between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017.

Did you know that some area teens go to high school right here on Zoo

grounds? It’s true! And in June of 2016, the 40th class of Zoo Academy

graduates accepted their diplomas.

You may have seen Zoo Academy students working around the Zoo. During

their eleventh and twelfth grade years, they cycle through each department,

learning how to do a little bit of everything. Zoo professionals mentor the

students, giving them hands-on experience.

Zoo Academy began as a vocational program within Cincinnati Public Schools

in the 1975-76 school year. In 1995, it became a four-year college preparatory

program. Students spend their first two years at Hughes High School before

transitioning to on-site classes.

Over 40 years, 750 students have received their Zoo Academy diploma.

Graduates have gone on to jobs within our Zoo, at other wildlife institutions,

and a wide range of other fields. Wherever they take their talents, they enter

the world prepared with versatile life skills and amazing memories.

It’s easy to assume that every child in Cincinnati visits the Zoo at some point.

However, this is not always the case. Transportation, financial resources, and

even lack of awareness limit some children’s chances to get close to amazing wild-

life. That is why, with generous community support, we bring the Zoo to them.

One Cincinnati family that believes deeply in providing educational experi-

ences for all children is the Maier family, descendents of Dave Frisch, founder of

Frisch’s Big Boy Drive-In restaurants. When Jack Maier became CEO of Frisch's in

1970, he took the company to new heights. Soon after, the Zoo’s Cat Ambassador

program founder, Cathryn Hilker, asked him to help start an education program

at the Zoo. Since that day and over the past 40 years, Frisch’s has sponsored our

“Zoo on the Move” program through the involvement of two of Jack’s eight chil-

dren, Craig Maier and Karen Maier.

Our Zoo on the Move program sends Zoo educators, together with live ani-

mals, into classrooms throughout the Tristate. Teachers from Pre-K to 12th grade

can choose from among a variety of interactive, standards-based programs in

subjects such as creative writing, science, art, or reading.

Zoo on the Move has grown by leaps and bounds over its four decades, and

positive feedback pours in from teachers, parents, and kids alike. Just since 2000,

we have reached 650,000 kids with this unforgettable learning opportunity.

Today, the Maier family continues their tradition of Zoo support. Craig and

Anne Maier’s sons Taylor and Alexander have worked with the Zoo’s horticulture

team, and daughter Avery helped lead a fundraiser this year that raised almost

$50,000 for Fiona’s care. Another daughter of Jack’s, Linda Maier, generously

supports the Zoo’s education department.

Thank you to the entire Maier family, to our educators, and to all who make

Zoo on the Move possible!

On the Move for 40 Years

Checking in with an Old FriendDr. Curry and some of her CREW colleagues travelled to Henry Vilas Zoo in Wisconsin in the spring to see how Berit was doing. Berit had moved there a few months earlier, as part of the three-way polar bear swap. The team reports that she is healthy and happy and has adjusted well to life with her new (female) roommate.

A Little Bear at the Hub of a Big ProjectA Little Bear at the Hub of a Big Project

One of the first things people notice about Anana is how small she seems… for a polar bear, that is. Size

aside, Anana represents an elite group. She’s one of a handful of female polar bears in AZA institutions

capable of producing cubs.

Anana came to reside at CZBG in November 2016 as part of a three-way swap among zoos. The AZA

(Association of Zoos and Aquariums) engineered the swap to better arrange polar bears for successful

breeding. “Anana is very special,” says Dr. Erin Curry. “We were very lucky to get her.”

Dr. Curry leads the polar bear research project at CREW. “CREW is the hub for reproductive research

with polar bears. I get inquiries from all around the world,” she continues. Other AZA zoos, along with interna-

tional institutions and even field researchers contact her with inquiries.

The AZA aims to create a self-sustaining population of polar bears in human care within the U.S. About 60

bears live in AZA institutions, with perhaps two new cubs born each year. “We don’t know why so few females

are actually producing cubs,” says Dr. Curry. “Our research is to figure out what the underlying issues are.”

First, CREW is seeking to find a novel biomarker—such as a hormone or other element in a fecal sample—

that signals pregnancy. Meanwhile, they rely on ultrasounds to find out whether a bear is pregnant. Berit’s

care team trained her to let them conduct an ultrasound on her and they hope to train Anana as well.

Says Dr. Curry. “When I started working here, I didn’t think it would be possible to train an 800-pound

carnivore to participate in a voluntary medical procedure. I was blown away.”

CREW also collects and preserves polar bear semen samples. Dr. Curry and her team have developed

a method to quickly and easily collect a sample while a male bear anywhere in the country is to go under

anesthesia for any reason.

In addition, CREW is midway through a study that could change the way AZA makes breeding recommen-

dations. Usually bears are paired for breeding at age 6 to 7. “We now know that bears in the wild may breed as

young as 3 or 4, so we think we may be missing a few valuable breeding years,” reports Dr. Curry.

So when can we hope to see a fuzzy little cub at CZBG? Polar bears’ breeding activity is confined to a

highly specific period during spring. When the 2017 season came along, Little One and Anana were still

getting to know each other, so no cub is expected in 2017.

The team is hopeful for spring of 2018. Once breeding is observed, the team will train Anana for an

ultrasound and keep their fingers crossed.

“They’re an amazing species,” says Dr. Curry. “There’s something about working with an animal that big

that sort of puts things in perspective. And there are so many questions to be answered about what makes

them tick.”

The CREW team, led by Dr. Curry (center), performs an AI procedure on Berit. Berit now resides at Henry Vila Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

Thank you! After 20 years, Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden visitors once again get to see hippos in

our Zoo. And not just any hippos… perhaps the most famous one in the world. And it’s all thanks to your

support.

Your generosity helped us complete Africa, the largest exhibit in our 140+ year history, by opening Hippo

Cove. This state-of-the-art, sustainable habitat inspires visitors with above-ground and underwater viewing

areas. It’s one of only a handful of structures like it nationwide.

After intensive planning and fundraising, the Zoo prepared to welcome two new residents to the

70,000-gallon pool. With a breeding recommendation from the AZA, we arranged to bring Henry, a 34-year-

old male river hippo from Dickerson Park Zoo, and Bibi, a 17-year-old female from St. Louis Zoo. They spent

about a month getting to know each other behind-the-scenes.

Hippo Cove opened on July 21, 2016 and quickly became the Zoo’s most popular spot.

For the first four days, the Zoo opened at 8 a.m. to give members the first peek at the new residents. But

crowds kept moving through all day, every day. Keepers and visitors noticed right away that Henry and Bibi

were doing lots of – ahem – flirting. We felt positive that a baby would join them before long.

By January, we were able to report that they were, in fact, expecting. We made history with the first river

hippo ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis. Keepers believed they had about two months to prepare for the baby’s

arrival… surprise!

The baby arrived six weeks premature on January 24.

In their makeshift intensive care unit, the hippo care team sprang into action. They named the tiny calf

Fiona and the community rallied behind them to save her life. The team struggled at first just to keep Fiona

at the right body temperature, prevent her skin from drying out, and ensure that she ate the right balance of

nutrients.

Special thanks to the following for their support during Fiona’s early months.

No other institution had successfully raised

a premature hippo before. This was uncharted

territory. A team of 22 people cared for her

around the clock. At times, she ceased to gain

weight. For a while she required a feeding tube

and then supplemental oxygen. But with skilled

care and lots of love, she put on weight and grew

into a little hero. Being the first to undertake

many of the tasks required of them, the Cincin-

nati Zoo staff now has a wealth of knowledge to

share.

Fiona appeared in newspapers, blogs, and

television news stories around the world. But no

one cheered louder than you, our members and

visitors here in Cincinnati.

The story of Hippo Cove continues to unfold

as guests pour in to meet our superstar family

of three. We’re so grateful to everyone who has

played a part in this story.

With so many people celebrating special events

at our Zoo, and our Education programs grow-

ing, we opened a new event venue in 2017. Twiga

(TWEE-ga), meaning “giraffe” in Swahili, provides

the best ever view of our giraffe yard. It’s one more

unique flourish to our ambitious Africa exhibit.

Guests can party on the patio or stay overnight

in Twiga’s luxury tents for a high-end adventure in

what feels like an authentic African campsite. During

the day, Twiga provides a great home base for spring

Craig and Marybeth Young have always included their children in family philanthropy decisions. Their

generous family goes to show that fostering empathy in young children leads to great things. Conver-

sations about how to best use their Family Foundation, established in 1995, eventually led their middle son

Michael, on a life changing journey.

Craig, who began running his software business from Cincinnati part-time in 1984, moved here with

Marybeth in 1991. They found the Zoo aligned with their values of protecting the environment. He says, “we

looked for organizations doing good work and sought a balance between local and global. The Cincinnati Zoo,

and the work of CREW, were a natural fit.”

Craig recalls, “Even though conservation was one of our primary areas of focus, all three of our children

consistently pushed for that to be a greater portion of our contributions.” Michael has always held a special

interest in bears, so when Craig was serving on the Zoo’s Conservation Committee, he jumped at the chance

to bring Michael to a presentation by Polar Bears International (PBI). Michael was concerned to the point he

said “Dad, we have to do something.” He wanted to do more than make a financial contribution.

In 2010, with the Zoo’s support, Michael applied and was accepted as a PBI Arctic Ambassador. With an

international group of students he traveled to Churchill, Canada to see polar bears in the wild and learn more

about polar bear research.

Inspired, Michael developed a project to reduce CO2 emissions, which affect the habitat of polar bears. He

asked two friends to help and they dubbed themselves the Care Bears. With Craig as their adult advisor, they

decided to use the rapidly expanding presence of smartphones to engage people in CO2 reduction.

The Care Bears developed a mobile app and the boys got more than 500 people to use it and share 5,000

CO2-reducing actions. Users reduced CO2 emissions by an estimated 300,000 lbs! Their project earned them

a trip to San Diego to learn even more about polar bears and that work evolved into an app used by many mid-

west zoos to encourage CO2-reducing actions.

Craig appreciates how the Zoo connects visitors to the wonders of wildlife so as to encourage them to

take action for future generations. We, likewise, appreciate his commitment to inspiring future generations

to get involved.

“I am most grateful for having the opportunity to use my resources, talents and passions to work to-

ward making our world a better place for all living things,” says Craig. “...and for the opportunity to work with

like-minded people including the good folks at the Cincinnati Zoo.”

Thank you, Young family, for all you do!
