I.Introduction
WelcometotheRealWorldDesignChallenge.ThishandbookisdesignedtoprovideinformationthatyouwillneedtosuccessfullyworkthroughtheChallenge.
TheRealWorldDesignChallengeisaScience,Technology,Engineering,andMath(STEM)competitionforteamsofthreetosevenhighschoolstudents.Thereasinglechallengethisyearpertainingtoprecisionagricultureandunmannedaviation.Highschoolscanenterasmanyteamsasdesired.TheChallengeandadditionalsupportingmaterialswillbeissuedonlineby1September2016andmadeavailablethroughtheRealWorldDesignChallengewebsite(http://www.realworlddesignchallenge.org).Youwilluseprofessionalsoftwaretoolsandhaveanopportunitytocollaboratewithmentorsfromindustry,government,andacademia.
ForthischallengeyourteamwilldesignanUnmannedAircraftSystem(UAS)anddevelopabusinessplaninsupportofaspecificcommercialapplication(seeRWDCchallengestatement).Thecompetitionwilltakeplaceintworounds.Firstisthestateorprovincelevel.Ifyourstateorprovinceisnotofficiallyparticipatingthisyear,youcanstilldotheChallenge,butyouwillbecompetingagainstalltheotherteamswhosestatesarenotofficiallyparticipatinginanindependentstate,territoryorcountrycategory.
Thechampionteamsfromeachparticipatingstate,provinceandorindependentstatesand/orterritorycategorymoveontotheNationalChallenge.YouwillgetanadditionalproblemthatbuildsonthestatechallengetocompeteintheNationalchallenge.Thetopthreeteamswillberecognizedwithtrophies,andothertopteamsrecognizedwithmeritawards.

FY17RWDCStateUnmannedAerialSystemChallenge:Farmer’sCompanion
Background
By2050,therewillbeanestimatedadditionaltwobillionpeopleonEarth,whichwillsignificantlyimpacttheavailabilityoffood.Ithasbeenestimatedthattherewillbeaneedtoproduce70%morefoodtoaddresssuchapopulationgrowth.Throughouthistory,advancesintechnologyhaveallowedfarmerstoproducemorefood.Onepieceofcurrenttechnologythathasthepotentialtogreatlyhelpthemodernfarmeristheunmannedaircraftsystem.Theseaircraftsystemsarecapableofperformingmultiplerolesonafarmsuchasquickdeliveriestoafield,cropmonitoring,animalobservation,andpestdetection.Byusinganunmannedaircraftsystem,thefarmercansavetime,savemoney,andincreaseyield.
Thechallengeforthisyearwillbetodesignanunmannedaerialvehicle(UAV)andassociatedunmannedaircraftsystem(UAS)thatisamultipurposetoolforthefarmer.Unmannedsystems,includingUAS,unmannedgroundvehicles(UGVs),andotherroboticsystems,representremotelycontrolledassetsusedtoperformtasksrequiringprecisionandrepetitivefunction,operationsinenvironmentscarryingahighdegreeofrisk,ortasksbeyondthecapabilityofmannedplatforms(i.e.,dull,dirty,anddangerous).Therearemultipleprivatecompanies,researchers,andgovernmentsdevelopingunmannedsystemstoperformavarietyoftasks,includingprecisionagriculture,conservation,wildlifemonitoring,damage

assessment,infrastructureinspection,andresearch.Onecommonfocusofsuchdevelopmentistheintegrationofadiversemixofcomponentsandcapabilitiesintoasingle,unifiedframework.Whiletheuses,designs,andoperationsofthesystemsvary,theyallrelyonacommonorganizationalcompositionbasedonpayload(e.g.,sensors,manipulationcomponent,andtransportedmaterial),remotevehicle,command,control,andcommunication(C3),supportequipment,andcrew.
TheFY17RWDCStatechallengewillcontinuethefocusonunmannedsystemsandprecisionagriculturethroughthedesignandimplementationofaUAStosupportprecisionagricultureintheproductionoffood(regionaltoyourarea).TheteamswilluseconceptsfromEngineeringTechnology(i.e.,applicationofscienceandengineeringtosupportproductimprovement,industrialprocesses,andoperationalfunctions)toidentify,compare,analyze,demonstrate,anddefendthemostappropriatecomponentcombinations,system/subsystemdesign,operationalmethods,andbusinesscasetosupportthechallengescenario.Throughuseofaninquiry-basedlearningapproachwithmentoringandcoaching,thestudentswillhaveanopportunitytolearntheskillsandgeneralprinciplesassociatedwiththechallengeinahighlyinteractiveandexperientialsetting.Forexample,thestudentswillneedtoconsiderandunderstandthevariousunmannedsystemelemental(subsystem)interactions,dependencies,andlimitations(e.g.,poweravailable,duration,rangeofcommunications,functionalachievement)astheyrelatetotheoperation,maintenance,anddevelopmenttobestsupporttheirproposedbusinesscase.
Asyouprogressthroughthechallenge,yourteamwillincrementallybepresentedwithbackgroundrelatingtothecompositionandoperationofunmannedsystemdesigns,engineeringdesignprinciples,unmannedsystemapplicationtoprecisionagriculture,businessmanagement,anddevelopmenttools.Youwillneedtoworktogetherasateamwithcoachesandmentorstoidentifywhatyouneedtolearnwhilepursuingthecompletionofthischallenge.Byconnectingyourownexperienceandinterest,youwillhaveanopportunitytogainfurtherinsightintotheapplicationofdesignconcepts,betterunderstandapplicationofunmannedsystemtechnology,andworkcollaborativelytowardscompletionofacommongoal.
Challenge
Thisyear’schallengeistodesignaUAS,createatheoryofoperation,anddevelopabusinessplanforthecommercialoperationsofthesystembasedonthefollowingscenario.
Scenario:Designanunmannedaircraftsystem(includingataminimumanappropriatepayload,airvehicleelement,andgroundcontrolstation)capableofbeingamultipurposetoolforafarmer.Threeminimum-requirementmissionsareprovidedthattheaircraftmustbeabletoperform,butsystemsthatcanperformbeyondtheminimumswillmostlikelybemoreattractivetopotentialbuyers.Thesystemmustbeeasytooperateaftersometraininganduseminimalgroundsupportwhileoperating.Theideaistohaveasystemthatcanbeeasilyusedbyafarmerinafield.Thespecifictypeoffarmanditslocationwillbeleftuptotheindividualteamssoafoodofregionalimportancecanbeselectedandtheknowledgeandexperienceoflocalagriculturementorsandexpertscanbeused.Farmsofeitherfoodproducingcrops(corn,wheat,fruit,vegetables,etc.)oranimals(cows,pigs,poultry,etc.)canbeused.Teamsneedtoidentifytheuniquedesignofthetotalsystem(includingallmajorsubsystemelementsandcosts),atheoryofoperation,flightpatterns,andabusinesscasesupportingeconomicviability.Acompetitivesolutionwillrequireanalyzing,documenting,andaddressingchallengesassociatedwithdesignedmissions,productivity,costs,andbusinessprofitability.Forthischallenge,werequirethatall

teams(eveninternational)followtheFAASmallUnmannedAircraftRegulations(Part107).Afewoftheconstraintsfromtheregulationsarethattheaircraftmustweighlessthan55lb,staywithinlineofsight,haveamaximumaltitudeof500ftabovegroundlevel,andhaveamaximumspeedof87knots.AlinktotheregulationsisprovidedintheGettingStartedsectionoftheRWDCwebsite(http://www.realworlddesignchallenge.org).
Minimum-requirementmission1(Logisticsmission):Theaircraftmustbeabletotransportapayloadof8lbtoalocation1mileaway.Withoutrechargingbatteriesorrefueling,theaircraftmustthenbeabletoreturnwithapayloadof8lb.Thepurposeofthismissionistohelpthefarmerwithlogistics.QuicktransportationofsuppliestoapersonoutinafieldmightbebetterhandledbyasmallUAVratherthanbyanotherpersondrivingatruck.TheUAVcouldalsobeusedtoreturnsamplesforanalysisortotakeaquickpictureofaparticularareaofafield.Teamswillneedtoidentifythepurposeofthismissionandtheexpectedpayload.
Minimum-requirementmission2(Surveymission):Theaircraftmustbeablestayaloftfor30minandsurveyanareaof0.25squaremiles.TheaircraftmustbeabletocarryacamerathatcantakeHDvideo(atleast1080p60)fortheentiretimealoft.Anaerialsurveyofafieldcouldbeextremelyusefulforafarmer.Withcommerciallyavailablesensors,andaircraftcouldsearchforpests,measuremoisturecontent,ormonitorlivestock.Teamswillneedtoidentifythepurposeofthesurveyinganddeterminetherequiredpayloadforthemission.
Minimum-requirementmission3(Dashmission):Theaircraft,withapayloadof2lb,mustbeabletotraveladistanceof1.5milesandreturntoitsstartinglocationasfastaspossible.RememberthatthetopallowablespeedundertheFAAregulationsin87knots.Missionsofthistypecouldbeusedforasmallpayloaddroporaquicksensorreading.Teamswillneedtoidentifythepurposeofthedashmissionandtheexpectedpayload.
Additionalmissions:Sincetheaircraftsystemistobeamultipurposetoolforthefarmer,teamsshoulddesignadditionalmissionsfortheiraircraft.Analysisofthesemissionsmustinclude,ataminimum,adescriptionofthegoal,payloadrequired,timeinflight,andflightpattern.
Businesscase:Thebusinessplanforyourteamwillbeintwoparts.Thefirstpartwillbethedesignandsaleoftheunmannedaircraftsystem.Itwilluptoyourteamonhowthesesystemswillbemarketedtofarmers.Willyouhaveabasepackagethatonlyincludesthemostpopularsensor?Willyouhaveanadvancedpackagethatincludesallofthesensorsyouraircraftcanaccommodate?Orwillyouallowfarmerstheopportunitytorentsensorsthattheymightnotuseoften?Thesecondpartofyourbusinessplanwillbeinsupport.Willyourcompanyprovideservicessuchastheanalysisofsensordata?
ObjectiveFunction
Eachteamistooperatefromtheperspectiveofasmallcompanyseekingfundingforthedemonstrationofaprototypesystem.ThechallengeproposalshouldutilizethePACEmodelofproductdevelopment(asadvocatedbytheProductDevelopmentManagementAssociation;www.pdma.org)suchthattheengineeringdevelopmentcostsareminimizedbutalsoincludeinformationabouttheacquisitioncostandoperationsandsupportcostofthesystemtoshowthattheproductcanbecompetitiveinthemarketplace.Thefollowingstepsarerecommendedinpursuitofaresponsetothechallengescenario:

1. Considerallaspectsandrequirementsofthechallenge.2. Performbackgroundresearchonthetopic,availabletools,andexistingdesigns.
3. Selectinitialfarmtype(crops,livestock,etc.)andregion.Researchthetypesofmissionsthatwouldbemostbeneficialtothefarmer.
4. Developatheoryofoperationthatcanbeadaptedasyoulearnmoreaboutthechallengetopics
andprecisionagriculturemethods.5. Createaninitialdesign(conceptualdesign).6. Analyzethedesignanddetermineeffectiveness(i.e.,identifyprocess[es]tovalidateandverify
preliminarydesignandoperation;ensureaircraftiscapableofperformingtheminimum-requirementmissions;ensureaircraftiscapableofperforminganyadditionalmissions;calculateobjectivefunction;evaluatedesign;andredesignandreviseasnecessary).
7. Continueresearchanddesign(documentdetaileddesign,designdecisions,lessonslearned,andrecalculatevariables;redesignandreanalyzeasnecessary).
Thesuccessfulproposalshouldincludeanestimateofthetimelinetorecovertheinitialinvestmentandanypotentialfutureyearprofitsforafive-yearperiod(e.g.,five-yearbreakevenanalysis),whilestrivingtodemonstrateandillustratethesolutionefficientlycompletesalldesignedmissions.

VII.SolvingtheChallenge
Inquiry-basedlearningapproach:Throughuseofaninquirybasedlearningapproachwithmentoringandcoaching,thestudentswillhaveanopportunitytolearntheskillsandgeneralprinciplesassociatedwiththechallengeinahighlyinteractiveandexperientialsetting.Forexample,thestudentswillneedtoconsiderandunderstandthevariousUASsubsysteminteractions,dependencies,andlimitations(e.g.,poweravailable,duration,rangeofcommunications,maintenanceofvisualcontact)astheyrelatetotheoperation,maintenance,anddevelopmenttobestsupporttheirproposedbusinesscase.Tosupporttheinquirybasedlearningapproach,youwillbeprovidedwithabasicframeworkassociatedwiththefollowingfocusareas:

TheDesignCoordinatorrolearisesyourteamiscomposedofmembersthataregeographicallydispersed.Therolewillnotapplyifyourteamiswithinasingleclass.TheDesignCoordinatoractsastheliaisonbetweenthedesignpartnerandotherinternalengineeringteams.TheDesignCoordinatorisoftenresponsibleforintegratingnewormodifieddesigndataintotheoverallproductdesign.TheDesignCoordinatoristheprimaryinterfacewiththethird-partypartner.TheDesignCoordinatorcoordinatespartnerengineeringresourcesandiseitherlocatedlocallyinanotherclassattheteam'sschool,orremotelyinanotherschool.
Systems&TestEngineer
TheSystemsEngineerdefinestheproductarchitecture,itsmodules,andinterfaces.Heorshehasultimateresponsibilityforensuringthevariouspartsoftheproductwillworktogetherasawholewhenfinallyassembled.Theyprovidedirectiontothedesignteam,manageinterfaces,andparticipateindesignreviews.TheroleofTestEngineerisresponsiblefortestingprototypesofdesignsandpre-productionproductscreatedbythedesignteam.TheTestEngineerreviewstestcasesgeneratedbythedesignteamandcollaborateswiththedesignteamduringthetestingphase.Thisroleistheliaisonwithanengineeringmentor,assistingtheteamwiththeincorporationofengineeringadvice.Thispersonmayalsobeaprojectsimulationengineerontheteam.
SimulationEngineer
TheSimulationEngineeristheexpertintheauthenticsimulationandmodelingtools,suchas3DCADandWindchill.TheSimulationEngineermanagesWindchill'sDigitalProjectSpaceandisresponsibleforsimulationandmodelingapplicationinteroperability,filecompatibilities,andfiletransfer.
ProjectScientist
TheProjectScientistshouldhaveabackgroundinphysicsorarelatedfield.Thisrolewillberesponsibleforthescientificintegrityoftheapproachandfortranslatingthescientificprinciplesintotheteam’sengineeringdesign.Thisroleistheliaisonwithasciencementor,assistingtheteamwiththeincorporationofscientificadvice.
ProjectMathematician
TheProjectMathematicianshouldhaveabackgroundinmathematics,withaminimumofalgebraandtrigonometry.Thisrolewillberesponsibleforthemathematicalintegrityoftheapproachandfortranslatingthemathematicalprinciplesandapplicationsintotheteam’sengineeringdesign.
ProjectCommunicator(orCommunicationsSpecialist)
TheProjectCommunicatorintegratesideas,approaches,andapplicationsfromthedesignteamintowrittendocuments,videos,andpresentations.Thisroleisresponsiblefortheteam'sbrand.Thispersonrepresentstheteamtothemediaandwillworkwiththeteacher/coachtocoordinateeventactivities.

UtilizetheDesignProcess
Engineersuseaspecificprocesstosolveproblems.Thedesignprocessprovidesaneffectivewaytolearnhowtodevelopinnovativesolutionsinasystematicway.Theprocessismuchliketheinquiryprocessinscience.Toeffectivelylearnityouneedtouseit.Allteammembersshouldlearnandparticipateinthedesignprocess.Althoughtheprocesshasbeendescribedinanumberofdifferentways,thebasicconceptsincludethefollowing:
1. Definetheproblemandneed.WewillprovidetheChallengetoyouandthatwillframetheproblem.Youwillneedtodefinehowyouwillsolvetheproblem.Thiswillprovidethefoundationfororganizingyourteamanddevelopingaworkplan.
2. Researchandgatherimportantinformationabouttheproblem.Wewillprovidereferencematerial,butweencourageyoutoidentifyadditionalmaterialthatwillhelpyouunderstandwhatothershavedonetoaddressthistypeofproblem.Thisinformationwillhelpyoudevelopanapproachtothesolution.
3. Whenyoustartout,youshouldbrainstormmultiplepossiblesolutionstotheproblem.Throughyourresearchyouwillbeabletonarrowandrefineyourpotentialsolutions.Whenyouidentifythefewyoulikebest,designandtestthem.
4. Test,analyze,andgatherdataonthesolutions.Testingthesolutionswillprovidedataonhowwelltheyworkedinaddressingtheproblem.Basedonthesedatayouwillbeabletomodifyyourdesignsandchoosetheonethatisthemostpromising.
5. Identifythesolutionthatseemsthemostpromising.Useyourtestdatatomodifythedesignandimproveit.
6. Reviseorredesignthebestsolutionbasedontestingandanalysis.Thisstepmaybedonemultipletimesuntilyouaresatisfiedwiththeresults.
7. Developaplantocommunicatetheresultsofyourworktoothers.Keepinmindthatyourreviewerswillbelookingforajustificationofyourapproachbasedontestdataandyouranalyses.Alsomakesurethatyouincludeinformationabouthowyouworkedtogetherasateam.Eachmemberoftheteamshouldhavemadeacontributiontothesolution.

Thenarrativesectionsofyourreportneedtoincludeinformationallowingjudgestoverifyyouranalysisanddesignviability.Itwillcommunicateanunderstandingofthemathematicssupportingtheresultsoftheproposeddesign.Thedataincludedinthereportwillexplainhowtheimagesinyourproposedsolutionrelatetothetestingresultsobtainedfromthemathematicalformulaeusedforanalysis,andhowyouhavemodifiedyourdesignsbasedontesting.Thenarrativeandgraphicrepresentationsofyourdesignshouldclearlycommunicateananalysisofhowtheproposeddesignworksandwhyitworks.
IntheDesignNotebook,youcapturethehistoryofyourwork,howyouunderstandthedesignprocess,anddevelopandtestyourdesignconcepts.Itisaworkingdocumentcontainingideastested,approachesandideasthatworkedandthatdidnotwork.Thenotebookshouldincludeandrepresentthecollaborationofyourteam,howteammembersunderstoodthedesign,howmentorscontributedtothesolution,aswellashowthedesignsolutionwastested.TheDesignNotebookwilldescribethestrategyusedtodevelopyoursolution,includingthestructure,roles,andresponsibilitiesofyourteammembers,yourworkplan,thementorswhoguidedyourprocess,andanyrules/proceduresthatyouemployedtoguidethework.Thisdocumentwillchroniclethedecisionsandtestingofsolutionsthatledtothefinaldesigncapturingthevariousiterationsofthedesignevolution.Itwillincludeconceptsexploredandformulaetestedthatcontributedtotheevolutionofthefinaldesignsubmitted,includingsketches,drawings,andschematicsofdesignstestedandmodificationsmade.

NationalChallengewillpresenttoaBlue-Ribbonpanelofexecutivesintheaviationindustrywiththefinalrankingofthetopthreeteamsbasedsolelyontheirpresentation.
Judgeswillbebriefedbeforescoringtoimprovetheconsistencyintheirevaluations.Theconsensusofmanyjudgesistrustedandmoreaccuratethanthescoresofafewjudges.Numerousteamsubmissionsrequirealargenumberofjudgestoprovideadequatecoverageinaconstrainedtimeframe.BecauseofthelargenumberofteamsintheNationalRWDCcompetition,judgesdonotallhavethebenefitofbaseliningtheirscoresagainstotherteams.
ThedistributionofteamsintochallengeroomsfortheirNationalChallengepresentationwillbebasedonteamsoverallpre-rankingfromEngineeringDesignNotebookandTechnicalMeritscores.Teamsofsimilarstrengthbasedonthesescoreswillbeplacedtogetherinthesamechallengeroomratherthanspreadacrossallchallengerooms.Judgeswillbeinabetterpositiontocompareandcontrastteamsofsimilarstrength.Therewillbefourteamspresentingineachchallengeroom.HalfofthejudgesineachChallengeroomwillrotatetoanadjacentroomtoallowforthebeststatisticalevaluationofoverallteamperformance.
BothChallengeJudges(scoringthepresentations),andTechnicalJudges(scoringtheEngineeringDesignNotebooks)willweighintoselectMeritAwards.MeritAwardswillgototopteams,withanyoneteamonlyeligibleforoneaward.
Theentirejudgingprocessismonitoredbyanindependentexpertresourcetoensurefairnessandequity.ThedecisionsbyjudgesattheStateandNationalCompetitionsarefinal!
JudgingfeedbacktoteamswillbecollectedfromChallengeandTechnicalJudgesandsharedwitheachteam.Teamrankingbeyondthetopthreewillnotbeshared.
XI.Rules
ThefollowingaretherulesandeligibilityrequirementsforRWDCparticipants.InordertoqualifytoparticipateintheNationalChampionship,eachparticipantandteammustmeetallcriteriaandfollowallstatedrules.
A.StudentEligibilityRequirements
1. ParticipationislimitedtostudentslivinginORenrolledinschoolslocatedinastate,territoryorcountrythatishostingastateorprovincecompetition.Schoolsaredefinedtoincludepublic,private,orhomeschools.
2. Tobeeligibletocompeteasastudentteammember,astudentmustbecurrentlyenrolledingradesnine,ten,eleven,ortwelve.Studentsenrolledinschoolenvironmentswithalternativegradeorleveldesignationsmustbeengagedinaprogramofstudyequivalenttothecorrespondinghighschoolgradelevel.
3. Studentteammembersmusthaveattainedtheageof14asof1October,oftheChallengeyear2016.

RealWorldDesignChallengeSummary
TheRealWorldDesignChallenge(RWDC)isanannualcompetitionthatprovideshighschoolstudentswiththeopportunitytoapplythelessonsoftheclassroomtothetechnicalproblemscurrentlyfacedintheengineeringfield.Eachyearstudentsarechallengedtooptimizethedesignofaplaneorengineeringsystem.ThegoaloftheRWDCistomotivateandpreparestudentsforScience,Technology,EngineeringandMathematics(STEM)fields.TheRWDCisgoingintoitsseventhyearofoperation.
Studentsingrades9-12competeinteamsof3-7members.Teamsmaycomefrompublic,private,charter,homeschoolsorafterschoolorganizationssuchasBoyorGirlScouts,scienceorengineeringclubs,etc.Allstudentteammembersmustbeenrolledinhighschool.Eachstudentteammusthaveateacher/coach.Ateacher/coachmayhavemultipleteams.ThereisnocostforcompetingintheStateChallenge.
Eachteacher/coachthatregistersteamsfortheStateChallengegets$1millioninprofessionalengineeringsoftwaretosupporttheRWDCChallengesorothereducationalactivities.Thesoftwaremaybeloadedonbothschoolandhomecomputers.TeamsthatwintheStateChampionshipareinvitedtocompeteintheNationalChampionship.EachstudentontheUnitedStatesNationalWinningTeamwillreceivea$50,000scholarshiptoEmbryRiddleAeronauticalUniversity.
FundraisingProcess
EachteamcompetingintheNationalChampionshipmustbeaStateChallengeWinner.EachTeamcompetingintheNationalChampionshipneedstoraisearegistrationfeeof$5,000forthefirst3teammembersandcoachand$1,000foreachteammemberafterthat.Eachteammustberepresentedbyaminimumofthreestudentsandacoach.
