What an exciting time to be living in Ottawa as 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Canada. There are many celebrations and activities planned for this year. We hope that our members will want to participate in the historical moments and 150 fitness activities. Each of you has so many memories to share… it will be exciting to see our members and clients celebrate Canada’s 150th. Please see page 17 for more details. We want to welcome the Ottawa Public Library to our neighbourhood. Our neighbourhood is expanding and we look forward to partnering with everyone. We are happy to welcome Emma Revell to our staff team as Day Program Assistant. Emma joined us on December 19th but it feels like she has been part of The Good Companions family for much longer! We are thrilled to announce that the Honorable Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, will join us at the Centre and will be our speaker for our International Women’s Day luncheon on Tuesday, March 7th. Huge thanks to our generous sponsors, Alterna Savings. Save the date for Tuesday, March 21st when we host our annual Vintage and Vibrant luncheon. We are delighted to announce that Marc Serré will join us as our guest speaker. Marc Serré is currently the Chair of the Northern Ontario Liberal Caucus with an extensive background in politics. Thank you to our friends at Scotiabank for returning as our title sponsor! We are looking forward to our annual volunteer recognition event on Friday, April 21st.

The staff team are looking forward to honoring the most dedicated group of volunteers in the city. Beware.. we may sing again!! Stephanie Keats, Board President, and I will be hosting our bi-annual members meeting on Tuesday, May 9th at 1 pm. We hope that you will join us. We greatly value your feedback and input. Please come and share what we do well, how we can enhance our services and how we can increase our profile in the community. We have such a great story to tell. We will be hosting a Good Companions Team again this year for the Ottawa Race Weekend, May 27th and 28th. Our participation in the race allows us to raise funds for the Centre. Come and join the team… you can walk, you can run and you can cheer us on! Join us on May 17th for a kick off luncheon for the Race Weekend. Please see page 31 for more details. We will also be hosting a kick-off event on Saturday, May 6th from 12pm - 4pm at St. Louis Bar and Grill on Clyde Ave. There will be a large silent auction at this event! This fall and winter we worked closely with the

United Way Centraide Ottawa to create videos

that share personal stories of lives that have

been touched by The Good Companions. I want

to thank Addie, Ceceline, Dorothy, Eleanor, Joy

and Cathy, for sharing their lives and their

perspectives. Each of these women captured

the true essence of The Good Companions.

Spring Program Registration April 4th, 5th and 6th

New Program Descriptions

55+ Alive Mature Driving Course — David Jones You should update your driving skills even if you haven’t been involved in a collision in 40 years. With aging, changes occur in hearing, vision, flexibility and reaction time. You can learn to adjust your skills to compensate for those changes. This course will take place in a classroom setting over 2 half-day sessions. You must attend both sessions to obtain the certificate. The instructor is trained by the Canada Safety Council.

Beaded Jewellery Sets Explore the tools and techniques used to create designs for necklaces, earrings and bracelets. We will be creating matching sets. Learn how to use memory wire for a quick bracelet and have fun with matching colors.

Container Gardening — Dr. Lynn Koroniak Gardening is great exercise and it’s good fun to see the plants growing! Never gardened before? No problem, come and learn! Are you an experienced gardener...you’ll love helping new gardeners discover this calming and yet invigorating activity.

Do We Love Ourselves Enough? A 4-week workshop for you to dive deeper into ways of recognizing the gestures of love each individual can relate to and ways to gain more into making the quality of life more meaningful to you.

Floral Crafts Celebrate spring’s arrival with floral-inspired crafts. We will make origami flowers to decorate cards and gift bags. For a special occasion we will create corsages. If you like to paint we will be embellishing the flowers as well. Learn the basic arrangement forms in floral design to create a beautiful spring bouquet.

Mindfulness & Meditation We will learn different breaths and meditation techniques to quiet the mind and body. There will be teachings and practices on mindfulness that will bring you joyfully into the present moment of life.

Mixed Media Cards Come and explore the fun art of making mixed media greeting cards, no experience necessary! We will use a variety of mediums to make all kinds of cards. Your design is your choice, try different techniques; your imagination is the limit. We have a variety of materials, handmade monoprinting and paper paste papers, recycled cards for collage etc. You can get beautiful results in a relatively short period of time using our Cricut Create machine to cut intricate designs.

9

Restorative Yoga Come with cozy socks (and a comfy blanket and a pillow or two from your sofa if you want). We will hold and rest in postures with support from props that will help restore peace to your day and comfort in your body. This is for all bodies and all levels. We do most postures on the floor, but if you need help getting down or back up fear not, assistance will be there. We will approach this class with a sense of loving humour and joy.

Companions Walking Group This low impact fitness activity combines the benefits of a physical activity with socialization. It is perfect for those of you who want an outdoor activity during spring and summer time, but do not want the solitary experience of walking alone. Regular walking strengthens your heart, helps you lose weight, tones up legs, bums and tums and even prevents dementia. It boosts circulation and increases oxygen supply and like other exercises it boosts your mood!

Weights and Stretch Starting with a warm up, this group class combines the benefits of strength and endurance as well as extra stretching for muscle relaxation and recovery. All stretches are standing up or in a chair.

5 Surprising Benefits Of Volunteering

If you have ever volunteered, then you know how wonderful you feel at the end of your shift. The right volunteer role can help you to reduce stress, make new friends and allow you to reach out to your community and help those in need. Volunteering can be beneficial in combatting depression, keeping you mentally stimulated and providing you with a sense of purpose. The following benefits of volunteering have been adapted from an article that was written by Mark Horoszowski, that appeared on MovingWorlds.org: 1. Volunteering time makes you feel like you have more time. Wharton Professor Cassie Magilner’s said “The research results show that giving your time to others can make you feel more ‘time affluent’ and less time-constrained than wasting your time, spending it on yourself, or even getting a windfall of free time.”

2. Volunteering your skills helps you develop new skills. Skills-based volunteering is an excellent opportunity to develop talents to help you get ahead in your career

3. Volunteering your body helps you have a healthier body. “Research demonstrates that volunteering leads to better health… those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer.”

4. Volunteering your experience helps build your experience. Volunteering in a new industry will give you knowledge. “According to the survey of 202 human- resource executives, skilled volunteer work — such as helping a non-profit with its finances — makes job applicants look more appealing to a hiring manager.”

5. Volunteering your love makes you feel more love. Researchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and measures of happiness. They found that the more people volunteered, the happier they were. Volunteering builds empathy, strengthens social bonds and makes you smile — all factors that increase the feeling of love.

15

Each month, we will highlight a volunteer from Community Support Services and from the Day Centre. On the first of the month, two names are randomly selected by the Volunteer Services Coordinator to be featured for the following month.

If you are an active volunteer, you will automatically be entered in the draw.

Volunteer Name: Valerie Small Volunteer Since: 2004 About Valerie: Valerie is always cheerful, welcoming, courteous, helpful and respectful to all clients, customers and staff. She is adored by her fellow volunteers and has made a wonderful addition to the Centre. Valerie not only volunteers her time with our Food Services department as a cashier, but is also a valued Volunteer Program Leader for the Knitting & Crocheting class.

Volunteer Name: Jacques Patenaude Volunteer Since: 2016 About Jacques: Jacques is a Handy Helper volunteer who is always willing to help our seniors with small tasks such as putting up pictures, changing light bulbs and many other minor repairs. In the past year he has had a big impact on the program and the clients he has helped. Jacques is very friendly and caring and while he is assisting the client, he does his best to inform them of our services and resources. Jacques also recently volunteered at our Bazaar!

Volunteer Name: Amit Sanyal Volunteer Since: 2016 About Amit: Amit is a telephone reassurance and client connect caller, as well as a finance volunteer. Every morning he can be seen with a smiling face and positive attitude, ready to make the many security check calls to our clients to see how they are doing. Weekly, he dedicates his time to calling more isolated clients and has longer friendly chats with them. Amit’s volunteering has a huge impact on all the clients he talks to; many of them wait for his call every morning and all of them look forward to hearing his voice. These programs are so important in helping support seniors to stay socially active and connected, and Amit does an incredible job at helping them achieve this goal.

Volunteer Name: Rena Miriguay Volunteer Since: 2008 About Rena: Rena has been a dedicated TGC volunteer for many years. Lending her help in administration, crafts, at special events and with our annual tax program, Rena has been a valuable addition to team TGC. She is adored by her fellow volunteers as well as by staff and the various members and clients she interacts with on a regular basis. Rena brings her friendly demeanor and caring nature to each of her roles, and we hope she continues to volunteer for years to come!

Q. Tell us how you first got involved with The Good Companions and how long you have been coming to the Centre.

A. I first became involved with The Good Companions in 2004. Quite a few of my neighbours were members at the time and had recommended it to me as an outlet to overcome the grieving process, as I had lost my daughter, Cindy, that year. Q. Tell me about some of the people you've met… A. I have met some wonderful people at The Good Companions Centre. People who are on their own journey, who will take the time to engage in conversation, to share a few laughs and just simply make your day! There are so many warm and caring people here. I feel blessed to be a member. Q. What might (someone) be surprised to know about you? A. I believe people would be surprised to know that I love bowling and I am quite good at it!

Q. What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering or becoming a member? A. I was fortunate to have friends recommend The Good Companions to me. I would tell them it has been a positive and rewarding experience in becoming a member and volunteer with such a wonderful organization. Q. What has being involved with The Good Companions meant to you? A. As a volunteer, I have been involved with drama, tours, Repeat Performance, Bazaars and the dining room. Currently, I am a volunteer on the phones and I sing in the choir. I must say, I love everything I participate in at the Centre. I find it so uplifting to be involved with such a great group of people! Q. If you had to describe The Good Companions in one word, what would it be? A. If I was to describe The Good Companions in one word, that word would be, AMAZING!

“The time spent here has saved my life”

When Cathy was diagnosed with early stage mixed dementia in 2014, she learned she could no longer live alone in her home. But at many of the programs and care facilities available to her, fellow clients experienced much more advanced levels of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. “I had no one to talk to all day long,” she recalls. “I taught for 28 years, so I know what it’s like to stimulate children. Adults have to be stimulated the same way.” After several failed attempts at finding a long-term care centre that fit her needs, Cathy moved into her daughter’s home. “You get to feel like you’re a burden – and I don’t want to feel that way,” she says. “I have many good years left and I want to use them in the best way I can.” Cathy says she wants to continue to be a valued and needed member of her community. Cathy has found a place to go during the days where she can maintain her independence, meet new friends and enjoy new, engaging activities. “The time spent here has saved my life, and I’m sure the lives of many people,” she says. “When I get up in the morning I don’t care if it’s dark or cloudy or raining – I just think, ‘it’s Good Companions day today, I’ll be with all my favorite staff and friends,’ “she says. “We just have so much fun. We socialize while we’re talking, and then some people like to do word puzzles. I knit, but I can knit and talk. I can do anything and talk, they call me Chatty Cathy.” “Even at fitness, you know, somebody will just all of a sudden start to giggle and everybody laughs, you know? To see the change in somebody … today I sat down and one of the ladies talked away. All she needed was somebody to help her to enter into a conversation. Maybe she is happy when she’s here, but she knows she has to go home and be alone. But she has the good hours here at The Good Companions.” The Adult Day Program is not only changing Cathy’s life, but the lives of many others.

Did you know that you don’t have to be an athlete to be active? The Canadian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines outline the amount and type of physical activity you need at every age and stage of life.

Following these guidelines will help reduce the risk of chronic disease, lead to a more focused mind, a stronger, and all in all, a more enjoyable life.

Ana Valença Day Centre Coordinator 613-236-0428 Ext 2150

Adults 18-64 Adults aged 18-64 years are encouraged to participate in a variety of physical activities that are enjoyable and safe to get their bodies moving and hearts pumping. Keep things fresh by mixing different activities until you find the ones you enjoy enough to do regularly.

Adults 65+ Adults aged 65 and older are encouraged to participate in a variety of physical activities that are enjoyable and safe to get their bodies moving and hearts pumping. Regular movement can help older adults age well and maintain independence.

Let’s Talk About Moving Muscles and Building Bones! Muscle-strengthening activities are those that increase skeletal muscle strength, power, endurance and mass, such as strength training, resistance training and heavy gardening involving digging or shoveling. Bone-strengthening activities produce an impact or tension force on the bones that promotes bone growth and strength. Jogging and lifting weights are examples of bone-strengthening activities.

What About Balance? Static and dynamic balance exercises are designed to improve older adults’ ability to maintain their balance while walking on their own or in a crowd, in bad weather, while climbing up and down steps or opening heavy doors. Activities that improve balance include walking on uneven ground (e.g., unpaved areas, forest trails) and yoga.

What are the Proven Benefits?

Being active for at least 150 minutes per week can help older adults to:

Maintain functional independence, mobility, bone health, mental health, and feel better. Improve fitness and Improve or maintain body weight. Reduce the risk of chronic disease such as heart disease and high blood pressure.

7 Ways to Prevent the Flu and Other Health Complications For Seniors

Older adults are at greater risk of serious complications from the flu than younger people because their immune systems become weaker with age. Seasonal influenza - the flu - infects millions of Canadians every year, resulting in over 12,000 hospitalizations and about 3,500 deaths annually. More than 91 per cent of flu-related deaths, over 80 per cent of hospitalizations and about 75 per cent of ICU admissions occur in Canadians 65 and older, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. Flu-related complications can also result in reduced independence and mobility for seniors, according to Archives of Internal Medicine.

How can you best protect against the flu? 1. Get a flu shot. The safest and most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones against the influenza virus is to be vaccinated. Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends annual influenza vaccination for people 65 and over, and for people under 65 with chronic conditions such as stroke, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Flu shots reduce the risk of death among seniors by about 85 per cent, hospitalization by 70 per cent and pneumonia by 60 per cent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They recommend getting vaccinated in November or early December so you are protected throughout the entire flu season. In addition to getting the flu shot, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from infection during flu season in the following ways:

2. Avoid contact with anyone who has the flu or flu-like symptoms.

3. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

4. Keep your hands away from your face.

5. Cough and sneeze into a tissue or your shirt sleeve rather than your hands. Promptly dispose of used tissues in the waste basket or garbage.

6. Keep common surface areas clean and disinfected, such as doorknobs, light switches, telephones and keyboards.

7. Eat healthy foods and be physically active to keep your immune system strong.

In 2013, Frank R. Lin, MD, Ph.D observed 1,984 adults over the course of six years, tracking the progression of hearing loss in relation to cognitive function. He found that hearing loss is a factor in loss of mental acuity in older adults.

those with more severe hearing loss had a greater likelihood of developing a cognitive disorder, and an increased decline in mental function.

even those with mild hearing loss were more likely to experience cognitive difficulties like memory changes, dementia and increased falls.

The exact link between hearing loss and cognitive decline is not yet fully understood; the most accepted cause is an increased “cognitive load” caused by the brain being overwhelmed by demands on its limited resources.

When close concentration is needed to follow a conversation, there are less cognitive resources for other things like memory and maintaining balance. It is similar to a computer that runs slower when there are programs running in the background.

“Declines in hearing abilities may also accelerate gray matter atrophy and increase the listening effort necessary to comprehend speech… Hearing aids may not only improve hearing but preserve the brain,” said Dr. Frank Lin, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Geriatric Medicine, Mental Health, and Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins.

There is overwhelming evidence that hearing loss is a contributing factor in the development of memory loss and dementia, ignoring hearing loss may have profound consequences. On average, people wait ten years before they seek treatment for hearing loss.

Evidence suggests that early diagnosis and medical intervention of hearing loss slows the progression of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and it is important for individuals to get

their hearing loss treated sooner rather than later. More current treatments include sound stimulation (offered at Advanced Hearing Aid Clinic) show promise in restoring some

memory function.
