OnePurpose School is a free public charter school serving children living in San Francisco’s highest-poverty neighborhoods. Today, we have 170 students in transitional kindergarten to grade 3 and will grow one grade level a year to grade 12.

Our mission is to disrupt the cycle of poverty in San Francisco’s highest-poverty communities by preparing students to go to and graduate from college.

OnePurpose School 2016–2017 Annual Report

In August, we began our third school year, welcoming to school 170 beautiful, energetic, and eager students.

It is hard to believe that just two years ago we launched OnePurpose School. Our vision was a school that, starting with very young children, would nurture and educate students from transitional kindergarten to 12th grade to prepare them for college graduation.

Our early results are promising and our students are thriving. And, we have learned that to realize our vision, we are building more than a school, we are building a community — a community of students, teachers, parents, funders, donors, board members, supporters, and other key partners.

We dedicate this, our first Annual Report, to the entire OnePurpose School community. We thank all of you who have entrusted your students to us, invested your money with us, provided us with guidance and strategic direction, and chosen to be part of our team as faculty, staff, board members, or volunteers. You have made a big difference in our school’s development and the success of our students.

So how are we doing? Like most start-up enterprises, getting up and running characterized our first year. Our second year, which ended in June, was characterized by growth and beginning to demonstrate that our pioneering approach to educating low-income children of color works.

Dear Friends, Families, Colleagues, and Supporters,

70% of our students read at or above grade level, well above the norm for students living in poverty.

OnePurpose School 2016–2017 Annual Report

Our third school year is well underway. Per our plan to grow one grade each year, we added third grade and have 170 students enrolled. And, thanks to the generosity of so many in our community, we now have a much-needed, full-time therapist (up from just two days a week last year), double the number of teacher aides, and a full-time instructional coach.

We are confident we can meet the central challenges that we face: addressing the trauma that many of our students experience, recruiting and retaining excellent teachers, and ensuring that we have the facilities to meet the needs of our growing student body.

We are deeply grateful to all of you for sharing our commitment to providing a quality education to children in the underserved communities in Southeast San Francisco.

Here are more facts about our school’s performance last year:

• We grew from 75 to 125 students.

• Attendance was a strong 92%.

• 93% of our students re-enrolled (excluding students who moved out of the area).

• We did not expel or counsel out a single student. This, too, is counter to the norm in schools where 93% of students live in poverty.

• Our budget increased from $1.7M to $2.2M.

• We raised $1.1M in private philanthropy, with gifts of $10 to more than $100K from individuals, families, foundations, and corporations.

“We are working to take luck out of the equation. Our students’ zip codes should not determine their ability to get a good education.”

Our Pioneering ApproachOnePurpose School has developed a new model for educating low-income students of color. We provide a highly individualized education that focuses on academic, behavioral, and socio-emotional support. Since our inception, we have not expelled or counseled out a single student.

The four pillars of OnePurpose School:• Focus on literacy• Address student trauma head-on• Project-based learning• Strong parent involvement

The teachers really support me getting to a higher level. Each day, I learn to be nice to people because they will be nice back and it will make the world better.”

Thank you donors! We are very grateful to the individuals, foundations, and corporations for their donations to OnePurpose School during the fiscal year ended June 30, 2017.

I’m an enthusiastic supporter of OnePurpose School for two key reasons. The life-course changing improvement in student outcomes is measurable. And the school’s model for educating children from lower income families is innovative and replicable.”
