prAna, a yoga and climbing apparel designer/manufacturer with a deep sense of responsibility to nature, the Earth and sustainability, took a risk on redefining the tradeshow exhibit experience. Gensler led prAna down a path that straddles a fine line between the organic and the sophisticated. Using prAna’s tagline, “Born from the Experience,” as inspiration Gensler created an environment that understands the company’s mission and uses recycled and natural materials to display the products inspired from world travels and curiosity.
Gensler used readily available knotted hemp rope as walls to surround the booth and provide a semi-permeable glimpse into the space while providing a sense of calm and quiet inside. The designers went so far as to block out the sodium vapor lighting hanging above the booth to soften interior light. The booth entrance sidewall is actually a 40-foot shipping container split in half. It serves as a background for a display platform and as a perch for the company’s cause partners to present their programs.
prAna’s point of view is embedded in unexpected places, for example, paper maché mannequins are covered in prAna messages, while plywood planes are covered in takeaway collateral organized like bee swarms. Pinwheel clusters provide stages for the clothing collections, and allow them to present to 300 exhibit attendees at one time. The materials palette emphasizes protection of natural resources over recycled content;the palette minimizes the amount of additive materials and focuses on raw materials for the finishes. This straightforward approach to materials compliments prAna’s commitment to the environment.
With a presentation design three times the size of their previous booth, prAna’s presence at this summer’s Outdoor Retail tradeshow catapulted them to the forefront amongst the industry’s most established brands. Gensler’s bold design embodied prAna’s philosophy while enabling their entire apparel line to be displayed in a true expression of the brand.

prAna, a leading active lifestyle apparel manufacturer opened its first retail stores in Boulder, CO and Santa Clara, CA in 2007. Now, their customers -- performance, outdoor and active lifestyle consumers -- will be able to experience the full breadth of the prAna brand in a dynamic and collaborative retail environment.
Gensler and prAna developed a store concept prototype that shares the brand story, engages consumers and demonstrates the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Well-known for its natural beauty, outdoor recreation, diverse businesses and commitment to sustainable living, Boulder, Colorado is the ideal location for prAna’s first flagship store. Located on Pearl Street, a pedestrian-friendly and vibrant retail area in the historic district of Boulder, the store features approximately 3,200 square feet of selling space and a 2,800 square foot showroom.

The new Gensler-designed prototype store for Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), is designed to serve as a working laboratory to analyze the performance of green building features and new retail concepts. The store’s design also incorporates an elevated community center that is the focal point of the store. The 42,000-square-foot store, a renovation and expansion of the store’s existing Boulder location, is designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Gold standards. Additionally, the store is part of REI’s involvement in the LEED for Retail pilot program.
The overall design scheme is meant to be reminiscent of nature, and is reflected in the exterior architecture and interior design elements. The store’s façade incorporates visual cues of earthen strata, thick forest canopies, and a towering pinnacle.
REI’s commitment to reduce its environmental footprint is translated through the store design in the use of green materials and building techniques including an aggressive daylight harvesting system that will reduce the store’s energy consumption and allow for more natural daylight in to the store. By utilizing Solatubes, throughout the store, and a centrally located glass atrium skylight the building will save approximately 20% in its energy costs, the annual equivalent of powering up to three houses. Additionally, the building captures the sun’s energy to power the store through technology called building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV)., a first of its kind in a retail environment. Other sustainable highlights include floors, perimeter walls, fixtures, displays, benches, and tabletops made of green materials such as bamboo, recycled rubber, and cork.
Emphasizing an enhanced shopping experience, Gensler researched REI customers and strived to create a welcoming experience for the range of store customers – from REI co-op members to first-time visitors. New fixtures, custom-designed by Gensler, efficiently display and store the vast array of merchandise that REI carries. In addition, new signage and way-finding systems ease navigation throughout the store.

nau, launched online in January 2007, is a green activewear company whose design philosophy promotes beauty, performance and sustainability. nau is a company dedicated to positive change by adhering to the highest performance standards in everything they do: product creation, production, labor practices, environmental stewardship and philanthropy. Nau feels that companies should have broader goals than simply generating profit, and that belief is reflected by their aspiration to be not “just another outdoor retailer.” Drawing from their philosophy on positive change, nau plans to reinvent the shopping experience through the launch of “Webfronts,” where customers can place orders at in-store kiosks and have them shipped to their home from a centralized warehouse. Webfronts reduce each store’s size and operating costs by minimizing the amount of in-store product line and back-of-house storage, and conserves energy.
Gensler worked as architect of record with nau and the design firm SkyLab to roll-out a prototype design that reflects nau’s mission and achieves their goal of creating a sustainable retail concept using a prefabricated kit-of-parts with reusable fixtures. The solution was a prefabricated, component-based environment with fully reusable fixtures that are built off-site, shipped in a flat pack, and assembled on-site in the existing store shell. Natural shapes and modern materials inspired the design and finishes palette. nau’s commitment to sustainable practices is evident though the use of energy-efficient lighting, reclaimed timber and recycled leather in combination with the modular construction technique. nau opted for a simple and minimalist boutique aesthetic to emphasize their product offering.

Gensler created a flagship retail space for Deegie’s Carma in Kansas City as a place for young shoppers to find inspiration and fashion enlightenment. Combining the best elements of a designer boutique and a department store, the 12,000 sf retail space is conceived as a gathering place, where customers can have an experience that goes far beyond shopping. “Exclusivity for All,” the brand’s cheeky motto, expresses the Deegie’s Carma inclusive attitude and contrasts with the haute exclusivity typical of the fashion world. Sales staff function as “stylists” to help shoppers discover and achieve their own personal, polished look that is on trend without being trendy.
Gensler worked with the client to develop the brand concept, including the name and identity, as well as the design concept for the prototype store, which is geared toward shoppers ages 18-28 with a sophisticated fashion sensibility.
“We are revolutionizing the retail shopping experience,” explains John Wilson, president and CEO, Three Wildcats, LLC.

After years of thinking “we can’t” about sustainable design, corporations, retailers, universities, government entities and many others are now saying “we can’t not” develop sustainable, high performance buildings and interior facilities that demand less from our natural environment.
As the designers of the first large-scale U.S. office building to use an under-floor air supply system, Gensler is a long-time proponent of sustainable design. After 20+ years, we know that a sustainable approach to design doesn’t just preserve our natural resources, but produces the business results that matter for our clients: reduced energy and operating costs, improved image and marketing advantages, and enhanced workplace performance and quality of life. With more than 900 LEED-accredited professionals firmwide–more than any other U.S. design firm–we’ve got the people and the know-how to employ effective, client-specific sustainable strategies. In recognition of our commitment to sustainable design and green building principles, Gensler received a Leadership Award in Organizational Excellence from the USGBC in 2006. How do we help you get there? Gensler’s “Four Tiers” sustainable design tools are performance-based design and process approaches that we created to help guide clients toward higher-performance projects with long lasting economic value and minimized environmental impact.
Tier 1. Basic Practice Smart, cost-neutral choices that Gensler implements on every project.
Tier 2. Good Practice (potentially LEED Certified) These practices are a step beyond basic practice and require slightly more client investment.
Tier 3. Best Practice (potentially LEED Silver or Gold) For the client expressing a strong commitment to sustainability, these strategies may result in higher first costs related to improved lifecycle operation costs. Our process involves cost-benefit analysis to assist in this decision making.
Tier 4. Transformational Practice (potentially LEED Platinum) These strategies may change the rules of the game in both the built environment and business ecosystems. The higher first cost of this approach yields significant gains in reduced lifecycle costs, energy use, and brand/PR advantages. These strategies represent a high level of partnership between Gensler and clients, and will result in the client forging new ground towards sustainability.
Every project Is unique and so the use of the Four Tiers differs for each client. Understanding the goals of the project early in the process is essential to strategy selection. Strategies with higher first costs may result in a higher ROI for our clients, while others may have value in the form of brand equity or public relations attention.

A sustainably designed building produces immediate and lasting benefits that are economic, behavioral, and environmental. For example, a building with displacement (underfloor) ventilation has a lower operating cost, improves the health of the occupants, and demands less energy from the grid than a conventional design. An interior designed with low-VOC and low emitting materials, access to natural light and views can improve occupant productivity, health, and sense of well-being and does not typically add cost to the project. Recyclable materials can cost less to install, improve the quality of indoor air, and reduce the amount of pollutants released into the earth’s atmosphere. Many sustainable design strategies can have significant collateral benefits:
• Siteplanningthatprotectsexistingassetsandreduces automobile use can also create useful outdoor spaces.• Buildingsystemsthatoptimizeenergyusecanprovide individuals with greater personal control of temperature and daylight indoors. • Renewableenergysourcesthatreduceoperatingcostscan significantly enhance energy flexibility, and increase the real value of built assets.• Constructionmaterialsthatconserveresourcescanalso create higher indoor air quality, resulting in healthier and more productive occupants, and reduced liability for owners.
Costs of Sustainable DesignEvery building design must balance the costs to build, operate, maintain, and replace or dispose, over the life of the institution. Some (but not all) sustainable design strategies increase the construction cost, and all of them typically reduce operating costs. Over the life cycle, the balance can lead to dramatic results, especially when the cost of salaries is included. Each project must find its own balance, and our experience has helped many of our clients to choose cost-effective sustainable strategies that yield real financial rewards.
A Sustainable Design ApproachFor us, the creation of a sustainable design begins with programming, and is part of the decision process at each phase of design and construction. The environmental goals defined in programming are restated, measured, and refined as new consultants, contractors, building maintenance personnel and users enter the process. By taking an integrated, whole-systems approach to the design process, the team can maximize the potential benefits and minimize any added costs. This attention to environmental issues is carried through to the building commissioning process and final occupancy, to ensure that the building operates in a way to realize the original design.
