SAWTELL REUNION 2018

SATURDAY 2nd June to Tuesday 5th June, 2018 The Sawtell Reunion, 2018 will be held from Saturday 2nd June through to, and including Tuesday 5th June. For the most part, activities will centre around the Sawtell RSL Club, located right in the heart of the Sawtell village in First Avenue. You can't miss the big multi storey club building. The Pacific ocean surf is a mere 100 metres from it.

Saturday will see the Meet, Greet and Registration take place in the Club in the downstairs area of the Norm Rowland Lounge. Full Club facilities will be available to all attendees.

The Club Bistro operates 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. The coffee Shop is open from the time of opening of the Club until late at night, and light snacks, drinks, desserts etc can be also obtained from there at any time of the Club opening hours. Most accommodation is just a short walk to the Club and the shopping area in First Ave. Besides the Club, there are numerous coffee shops, restaurants, fast food outlets and bars, with the Sawtell Hotel opposite the Club premises. The Sawtell Bowling Club is approx. 200 metres from the Club, and visitors are always made welcome. Sawtell Golf Club is also close by for those who wish to play a round of golf. The energetic can easily walk there, about 700 metres distant to the Club.

Sunday commences at 11am with a march up the main street, First Ave., and around the Club to the Lyle Rose RSL Memorial Park for a Service of Commemoration. This is followed by a luncheon in the upstairs dining and covered verandah area of the Club.

Monday an optional trip by coach is offered , travelling into the Coffs Coast hinterland, visiting Bellingen, and then climbing up onto the plateau to Dorrigo through the ancient Dorrigo Gondwana National Heritage park, passing two waterfalls and visiting the National Parks and Wildlife sky walk, Dangar Falls, Griffins lookout and lunching at the Dorrigo RSL Golf Club. Morning tea will also be provided during the trip.

Tuesday, a General Meeting of the Association will be held in the Norm Rowland lounge area of the Club, commencing at 10.15am.

In the evening, in the upstairs Princess Room auditorium, the famous Seafood/Carvery Smorgasbord of the Club will be on. This Smorgasbord is the only one on the Mid North Coast where you can eat all the fresh prawns, oysters (natural, kilpatrick), fish pieces, bites etc that you can manage, along with traditional roasts, veges, salads and a huge dessert bar to choose from, as well as tea/coffee etc. This smorgasbord is a signature dish of the North Coast, and great value. ANNUAL SERVICE OF COMMEMORATION AND REFLECTION UPON PASSED MEMBERS, TONGALA ON TUESDAY 24th OCTOBER.

Our 7th Annual Service of Commemoration of the Fallen, and the Reflection on the lives of members Passed this last twelve months, was held in sunny mild conditions at Tongala on Tuesday 24th October.

This year marked the 100th anniversary of the Charge at Beersheba, and it also marked a turning point in the Service as well; the children of the two Tongala Primary schools conducting the entire ceremony. To say the least, they were magnificent, and the Service was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The Schools have committed to carrying out the Service in the coming years ahead, with only minimal input from myself or other members. A slightly larger number of veterans and wives attended this year, and I have noticed that the numbers slowly increase each year. This year we had 65 catered for the light luncheon at the Tongala RSL hall, up from about 50 last year. It was a good time to gather together, have a chat, renew acquaintances and meet our guests.

Our Patron, Bob HAGERTY took ill just before the Service, and was unable to attend. We wish him well, and look forward to a speedy recovery for him in these coming months. Apologies were also received from Mr Damian DRUM, MP, Federal Member, and Mr John GEARY, Deputy Commissioner for DVA (Victoria). Our distinguished guests this year were: Councillor Neil PANKHURST, representing the Mayor of the Campaspe Shire, Major Greg HOOPER, SO2 to the HOC, Armour, (and also representing the OC of the 3rd/4th Cavalry Regiment), Major Perri HOBBS, representing the HOC of the Corps of RAEME, Captain Lachlan POPPINS, 2 i/c

of A Squadron, 4th/19th POWLH Regiment, Mr Peter WALSH, MP, Member for Murray Plains, Mr John BENTLEY, Tongala RSL President, and the Reverend John TINKLER. Reverend John is also a Vietnam veteran and operates out of nearby Moama.

During the Reflection, the following passed members were remembered and the names read out, followed by a minute’s silence, and the sounding of the Last Post:

Eric John (Blue) COLLINS,(73), Clive Montague BICKNELL, (68) , William Clarence (Bill) WALDECK, (78) , Christopher David (Chris) DONOVAN, (78), Alan Boyce (Casper) MUIR, (67) , John Frederick CROSSMAN, (74) and Peter Francis James LAIDLAW (72).

Gerard O'Neill, Ron Ronan enjoy lunch

Les Dunstan listens attentively

Wreaths were laid by each of our Guests, followed by the bugler who sounded the Last Post and Reveille.

During this past 12 months, a few more "items" have been added to the inventory of the APC on site, namely water bottle and smoke grenades, to enhance the authenticity of the vehicle as it would have been whilst deployed. A set of antennae are being made locally to permanently display on the Carrier throughout the year, which can be quickly detached and replaced by the originals at any time of choosing. It is only on the day of the Service, that the Carrier is displayed with all its accoutrements, as they would be quickly "removed"

by others if left there permanently .At the least, we could have antennae attached to enhance the Carrier all the time.

I also had the Echuca/Moama camera Club members attend the Memorial site whilst I was down there, in order that they could take some more professional type photos of the Memorial, now linked with the Light Horse Memorial, and additionally the

Carrier adjacent to our Memorial.

When these become available, I will let everyone know, and you will be able to gain a free copy of any one of them. More on that later.

RESOLUTE SHIELD HANDOVER

At the completion of the Commemoration Service, I was also able to hand over the perpetual "Resolute Shield" to each of the school's teachers. These shields will form part of their schools Annual Prize giving night/afternoon, and will be awarded for "Good

Citizenship". The winner will have their name engraved on the shield,(each shield has room for 40 years) and be awarded a small silver cup with black base with their name engraved on it to take home. The funding behind this project was obtained by Nick Weir from anonymous donors, as was the location of the appropriate company to supply the Shields carried out by Nick as well. I sincerely thank Nick for all his hard work on this idea, which has been a big hit with the schools themselves. I also wish to thank those anonymous donors as well, as the schools throw a lot of effort into our projects and Service down there each year, and this has been a solid donation that cements a permanent relationship, not only with our Memorial, but also our Association.

L TO R: St.Patricks teacher Brady, along with Tongala State Primary teacher, Rod, proudly display the Resolute Shields at the completion of our Service. These are the teachers who put so much

effort into the children for them to participate and conduct our Service.

The evening was then spent in the Tongala Hotel/Motel bistro by all attendees before dispersing the following day. I look forward to next years Service again, with the children now running the event, and at such a high standard of which we should be proud...Editor.

BEERSHEBA STATUE UNVEILED AT MUSWELLBROOK 31st OCTOBER, 2017

A number of Cavalry members assembled at Muswellbrook in the upper Hunter Valley, on Beersheba Day to witness the unveiling of a statue dedicated to the Charge of Beersheba one hundred years ago. The men of the 4th and the 12th Light Horse were men drawn from

the Hunter and New England areas of NSW, as were many of the horses supplied to the Light Horse for World War One service. Many of the local people are direct descendants of those who took place in the Charge, so it had rather a poignant air about it all. The statue depicts that fatal moment when the Light Horse stormed into the trenches and parapets of the Turks holding Beersheba. Interestingly, the sculptor, Brett Garling from Wongarbon, near Dubbo, sculptured the horse over the skeletal remains of a horse that had died many years previous on his property. Observance was also

given to the horses who were sent off to war, and who, through quarantine regulations existing at that time, never returned. The upper Hunter area of NSW is the leading Thoroughbred breeding district in Australia, and a strong connection with horses is very abundant in this area, with many large Horse Breeding Studs close by. The commissioning of the sculptor, responsibility of organising the placement, erection and items of authenticity etc of the project had been handed to John Flood by the Council to handle on their behalf. The statues figure of the horse has been dedicated to "Midnight", the horse of the Commanding Officer. Midnight was bred on the Haydon's property in nearby Murrurundi/Blandford area, and the bloodline still exists in that family's horses today. Midnight died in the Charge that day, so long ago.

Following the Opening, a Ecumenical Service remembering the Wounded and Fallen was held in the St Albans Anglican Church, where the names of the Fallen were read one by one, and a candle lit in his memory. A small Lance Guard contingent from the 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers attended the Services.

BOER WAR MEMORIAL, CANBERRA

In an earlier issue of the newsletter, I reported the opening of the Boer War memorial in Canberra last May. On my return trip from Tongala this year, I made a detour to Canberra to have a personal look at the Memorial.

To say anything less than “it’s magnificent”, would be an injustice to it. Photos of the Memorial taken just from the front of the memorial itself do not convey the theme and grandeur of the Memorial, and I spent quite a bit of time there looking at it from different angles. I will pass the opinion that I believe it to be perhaps , the most striking of all the Memorials along that Avenue, and thoroughly recommend a viewing if down that

way. In fact, the veterans of Coral/Balmoral will be in Canberra during May of next year, and I commend this to you all to have a look. The authenticity and finite detail on the horses, horsemen and equipment is really very good, and is a credit to the sculptor. Attached herein are several photos I took. Regards, Dallas (Burrage)

1st ARMOURED REGIMENT DEPARTS DARWIN

After 22 years in Darwin, the 1st Armoured Regiment is moving to Adelaide to take advantage of the southern-state’s year-round-training weather.*CAPTION*: /Soldiers from 1st Armoured Regiment on their final parade in Darwin before the unit moves to Adelaide. Soldiers of the 1st Armoured Regiment conducted a final parade at Robertson Barracks, near Darwin, on Wednesday 25 October 2017 to mark their departure. The parade was also a chance to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Beersheba. Also during the Parade, 1st Armoured Regiment’s Chauvel Lines were officially renamed Matilda Lines and handed over to the Marine Rotational Force – Darwin. The regiment will now take up residence in the RAAF Base Edinburgh Precinct in South Australia. The move is one of the final Plan Beersheba pieces to fall into place. Following the 1st Armoured Regiment’s proud 22-year history in the Northern Territory, the Regiment’s soldiers and equipment will arrive in Adelaide ready to take advantage of the year-round training conditions available in South Australia, mainly at Cultana.

Subject: Greetings and Request Hi Dallas Mate have a request. There is a small "cottage" business here in Canberra that makes modelling parts and decals for Australian armoured vehicles. I have had a number of discussions with John the owner and have provided a number of photos that have been used in various books he's published (Military Briefs Series). He was interested when he saw some of my photos of 2 Troop vehicles from Vietnam. What caught his eye was the vehicle names (Peanut Characters). He wants to do a decal sheet of the vehicle names and ARN (Rego Numbers). He has the Regos for each callsign. What is needed is the individual names. Dave Lester and I have put our heads together and come up with a few - Troop HQ sect and 23B (Pigpen). Have also been in contact with Tony Fryer - he can only remember Pigpen. Would be interesting to get the whole list together. One of those things that at the time was unimportant. Was wondering if you could put a short request in an issue of SITREP asking ex members of the troop if they could send me the names and callsigns as they remember them (or from photos). You can use my email address as the point of contact ([email protected]). regards Charlie (aka Spot).
