    WGHSINSTRUMENTALMUSICCOURSEDESCRIPTIONS

    MarchingandConcertBandGrades9-12Prerequisite:SuccessfulcompletionofanauditionorstrongrecommendationwithDirectorssignature.(WindInstruments)Thiscoursefocusesontheperformancepracticesofqualityconcertbandandmarchingbandliterature.Avarietyofliteraturewillbestudied,withemphasisondevelopingproperplayingtechniques,thestudyofmusictheoryandhistory,andbuildingindividualandensembleplayingandleadershipskills.Individualpracticeisrequiredaspartofthiscourse.Thisisaperformanceclass,withrequiredconcerts,rehearsals,andtravelpossibleoutsideofthescheduledclasstime.Studentsareresponsibleforsupplyinghis/herowninstrumentormakingarrangementswiththedirectortouseschoolequipment,ifavailable.

    WindEnsembleGrade9-12Prerequisite:AuditionorBandDirectorApprovalWindInstrumentsOnly(Flute,Clarinet,Saxophone,Trumpet,Horn,Trombone,Euphonium,Tuba,Oboe,Bassoon)TheWGHSWindEnsembleisthepremierconcertband.Thiscoursewillfocusonhigherlevelpieces,challengingthestudentsasmusicianstoexpandtheirmusicalknowledgeandability.Avarietyofliteraturewillbestudied,withemphasisonlargeandsmallensembleplayingandleadershipskills.Individualpracticeisrequiredaspartofthiscourse.Thisisaperformanceclass,withrequiredconcerts,rehearsals,andtravelpossibleoutsideofthescheduledclasstime.Studentsareresponsibleforsupplyinghis/herowninstrumentormakingarrangementswiththedirectortouseschoolequipment,ifavailable.

    PercussionGrades9-12Prerequisite:SuccessfulcompletionofanauditionorstrongrecommendationwithDirectorssignature.(PercussionInstruments)Thiscoursefocusesonstudyingpercussionensembleliterature,whilealsoactingasandrehearsingthepercussionliteraturestudiedinMarchingandConcertBand.Avarietyofliteraturewillbestudied,withemphasisondevelopingproperplayingtechniquesonallpercussioninstruments,buildingindividualandensembleplayingskills,andthroughthestudyofmusichistoryandtheory.Individualpracticeisrequiredaspartofthiscourse.Thisisaperformanceclass,withrequiredconcerts,rehearsals,andtravelpossibleoutsideofthescheduledclasstime.Studentsareresponsibleforsupplyingmallets,sticks,astickbag,andothermaterialstosupplementtheinstrumentsprovidedbyWaldenGroveHighSchool.CourseFee:$60.00PleasenotethattheCourseFeeforeachclasscoversthecostofthemusicperformedthroughouttheentireschoolyear,alongwithcompetitionfees,transportationcosts,andotherexpensesincurredbytheentireensemble.Studentsmayberequiredtopurchasesuppliesforhis/herinstrument,uniformpieces,orothersuppliesnecessaryfortheclassinadditiontothecoursefee.Ifatanytimethereisanissueincoveringthecostofanyofthesematerials,pleasecontactMr.Carleatrcarle@sahuarita.net.

    WGHSINSTRUMENTALMUSICPROGRAMPOLICIES Expectations

    AsaparticipantoftheWGHSInstrumentalMusicProgram,eachstudentisexpectedtoworktogethertohelpcreateandupholdaPositive,Challenging,Constructive,andInclusivelearningenvironment.Inordertoensurethatthistakesplacestudentswill:

    RespectAllRespectallparticipantsoftheWGHSInstrumentalMusicProgramandWGHS,thematerialsintheclassroom,allinstruments,etc.

    TryHisorHerBestGoaboveandbeyondwhatisaskedofyouworktosurpassonesownpotential

    BeonTimeRememberTobeearlyistobeontime,tobeontimeistobelate,andtobelateisunacceptable.

    Withintheseguidelines,allstudentsareexpectedtobepreparedforallclasses,rehearsals,andeventsby:

    Havingallnecessarymaterials(workinginstrument,music,pencil,etc.) Followingalldirectionsgivenbyleadersofthegroup FollowingallrulesandpoliciessetbytheWGHSInstrumentalMusicDepartment,

    WaldenGroveHighSchool,theWGHSStudentHandbook,WGHSAdministration,SUSD,andtheperformanceandtravelvenues.

    Settingpositiveexamplesforallmembersofthegroup,andthoseobservingthegroup,astorepresentWGHSandSUSDextremelywell

    HavingfunTheoverallatmospherewithinthemusicrehearsalroomisalwaysexpectedtobepositive.Bullying,name-calling,derogatoryterms,horsingaround,trashingtheroom,andotherbehaviorsthattakeawayfromapositiveatmosphereWILLNOTbetolerated.Anystudentorstudentspartakinginthesebehaviorswillbeaskedtoleaveimmediatelyandfacenecessarydisciplinaryaction.Studentsnotadheringtothepoliciesdescribedinthishandbookwillfacethefollowingconsequences:

    Anyadditionalinappropriatebehaviorsorextremeinappropriatebehaviorsandactionswillresultinpossibleoff-campussuspensionorotherdisciplinaryactions.Ifastudentmisseslunchdetention,theywillthenreceiveanofficereferral.

    ByadheringtoallofthepoliciesinthishandbookandatWGHS,studentscanensureapositiveenvironmentforalltolearn,resultinginabetterexperienceandstrongeroutcome(performance,testingresults,etc.).Studentsseengoingaboveandbeyondallrequirementswillbeacknowledgedthroughphonecallshome,recognitionsawards,andotheracknowledgementsthroughouttheyear.

    AssignmentsandGrading

    LateWorkPolicy

    Forallassignments,studentsarerequiredtomeetthesetdeadlines.Lateassignmentswillbeacceptedforfullcreditonlyintheeventofanexcusedabsence.Allotherlateassignmentsmaybeturnedinuptotwodaysafterthedeadlineforpartialcredit(50%onthefollowingday,25%forthesecondday).Aftertwodays,assignmentswillstillbeaccepted,butnotforcredit.

    ExtraCredit

    Allstudentsareencouragedtocompleteextracreditassignments.Extracreditassignmentsinclude,butarenotlimitedtothefollowing:

    MusicEventsattendapre-approvedmusicevent,andsubmitaprogram/ticketstubandaonepagewriteupwithinoneweekoftheeventArticleReviewfindacurrent,pre-approvednewsarticlerelatingtomusicandwriteaonepagecritiqueofthearticlewithinoneweekofthearticlebeingpublishedRecordReviewlistentoafullpre-approvedalbum,andsubmitawriteupdescribingandcritiquingeachtrack(minimumonepage)

    Pleasenotethatinordertoreceiveextracreditpoints,studentsmustcompleteallnecessaryassignments.ExtracreditassignmentsmustbesubmittedbythesecondtolastFridayofeachquarter.

    AcademicEligibilityandM.Y.P.

    Forperformancesoutsideofeachendofquarterconcert,studentsmustmaintainacademiceligibilitybymaintainingatleastaC(70%)inALLclasses.IfastudenthasagradebelowaC,theywillnotbeeligibletoperform,butwillstillberequiredtoattendtheperformanceunlesstheperformancetakesplaceduringtheregularscheduledschoolday.Mr.Carlewillmonitorstudentsgradesonaweeklybasis.Ifastudentisnotacademicallyeligibletwoweeksinarow,thestudentmayberequiredtoattendafterschooltutoring,meetwiththeteachertocreateaplanofaction,orholdaparent-teacherconference.PleaseseetheAcademicEligibilitycontractformoreinformation.NewthisschoolyearistheMaximizeYourPotential(MYP)period.Thisisatimeforstudentstomakeupassignments,getextratutoring,andgetaheadinclasses.AttendanceisrequiredforallstudentswithanForasassignedbyateacher.Inadditiontoutilizingthistimeforclasses,wewillalsousethistimeforrequiredsectionals.Thespecificdayandtimeofthiswillbedeterminedduringthefirstweeksofschoolandwillvarybysection.TheofficialMYPsectionforMr.CarleisSession1.
