WGHSINSTRUMENTALMUSICCOURSEDESCRIPTIONS

MarchingandConcertBandGrades9-12Prerequisite:SuccessfulcompletionofanauditionorstrongrecommendationwithDirectorssignature.(WindInstruments)Thiscoursefocusesontheperformancepracticesofqualityconcertbandandmarchingbandliterature.Avarietyofliteraturewillbestudied,withemphasisondevelopingproperplayingtechniques,thestudyofmusictheoryandhistory,andbuildingindividualandensembleplayingandleadershipskills.Individualpracticeisrequiredaspartofthiscourse.Thisisaperformanceclass,withrequiredconcerts,rehearsals,andtravelpossibleoutsideofthescheduledclasstime.Studentsareresponsibleforsupplyinghis/herowninstrumentormakingarrangementswiththedirectortouseschoolequipment,ifavailable.

WindEnsembleGrade9-12Prerequisite:AuditionorBandDirectorApprovalWindInstrumentsOnly(Flute,Clarinet,Saxophone,Trumpet,Horn,Trombone,Euphonium,Tuba,Oboe,Bassoon)TheWGHSWindEnsembleisthepremierconcertband.Thiscoursewillfocusonhigherlevelpieces,challengingthestudentsasmusicianstoexpandtheirmusicalknowledgeandability.Avarietyofliteraturewillbestudied,withemphasisonlargeandsmallensembleplayingandleadershipskills.Individualpracticeisrequiredaspartofthiscourse.Thisisaperformanceclass,withrequiredconcerts,rehearsals,andtravelpossibleoutsideofthescheduledclasstime.Studentsareresponsibleforsupplyinghis/herowninstrumentormakingarrangementswiththedirectortouseschoolequipment,ifavailable.

AsaparticipantoftheWGHSInstrumentalMusicProgram,eachstudentisexpectedtoworktogethertohelpcreateandupholdaPositive,Challenging,Constructive,andInclusivelearningenvironment.Inordertoensurethatthistakesplacestudentswill:

Withintheseguidelines,allstudentsareexpectedtobepreparedforallclasses,rehearsals,andeventsby:

HavingfunTheoverallatmospherewithinthemusicrehearsalroomisalwaysexpectedtobepositive.Bullying,name-calling,derogatoryterms,horsingaround,trashingtheroom,andotherbehaviorsthattakeawayfromapositiveatmosphereWILLNOTbetolerated.Anystudentorstudentspartakinginthesebehaviorswillbeaskedtoleaveimmediatelyandfacenecessarydisciplinaryaction.Studentsnotadheringtothepoliciesdescribedinthishandbookwillfacethefollowingconsequences:

ByadheringtoallofthepoliciesinthishandbookandatWGHS,studentscanensureapositiveenvironmentforalltolearn,resultinginabetterexperienceandstrongeroutcome(performance,testingresults,etc.).Studentsseengoingaboveandbeyondallrequirementswillbeacknowledgedthroughphonecallshome,recognitionsawards,andotheracknowledgementsthroughouttheyear.

LateWorkPolicy

Forallassignments,studentsarerequiredtomeetthesetdeadlines.Lateassignmentswillbeacceptedforfullcreditonlyintheeventofanexcusedabsence.Allotherlateassignmentsmaybeturnedinuptotwodaysafterthedeadlineforpartialcredit(50%onthefollowingday,25%forthesecondday).Aftertwodays,assignmentswillstillbeaccepted,butnotforcredit.

ExtraCredit

Allstudentsareencouragedtocompleteextracreditassignments.Extracreditassignmentsinclude,butarenotlimitedtothefollowing:

MusicEventsattendapre-approvedmusicevent,andsubmitaprogram/ticketstubandaonepagewriteupwithinoneweekoftheeventArticleReviewfindacurrent,pre-approvednewsarticlerelatingtomusicandwriteaonepagecritiqueofthearticlewithinoneweekofthearticlebeingpublishedRecordReviewlistentoafullpre-approvedalbum,andsubmitawriteupdescribingandcritiquingeachtrack(minimumonepage)

Pleasenotethatinordertoreceiveextracreditpoints,studentsmustcompleteallnecessaryassignments.ExtracreditassignmentsmustbesubmittedbythesecondtolastFridayofeachquarter.

AcademicEligibilityandM.Y.P.

Forperformancesoutsideofeachendofquarterconcert,studentsmustmaintainacademiceligibilitybymaintainingatleastaC(70%)inALLclasses.IfastudenthasagradebelowaC,theywillnotbeeligibletoperform,butwillstillberequiredtoattendtheperformanceunlesstheperformancetakesplaceduringtheregularscheduledschoolday.Mr.Carlewillmonitorstudentsgradesonaweeklybasis.Ifastudentisnotacademicallyeligibletwoweeksinarow,thestudentmayberequiredtoattendafterschooltutoring,meetwiththeteachertocreateaplanofaction,orholdaparent-teacherconference.PleaseseetheAcademicEligibilitycontractformoreinformation.NewthisschoolyearistheMaximizeYourPotential(MYP)period.Thisisatimeforstudentstomakeupassignments,getextratutoring,andgetaheadinclasses.AttendanceisrequiredforallstudentswithanForasassignedbyateacher.Inadditiontoutilizingthistimeforclasses,wewillalsousethistimeforrequiredsectionals.Thespecificdayandtimeofthiswillbedeterminedduringthefirstweeksofschoolandwillvarybysection.TheofficialMYPsectionforMr.CarleisSession1.
